Students have stated that they chose St. Thomas because of its focus
on educating the whole person. In the spirit of greatness we continue our
commitment to lay a foundation that will nurture the intellectual,
physical and moral growth of generations to come.
We started the academic year last fall with great anticipation and
excitement. We welcomed the Center for Faith and Culture to our main
campus, where it offers courses on the dynamic relationship between our
Catholic faith and American culture. His Eminence Donald Cardinal Wuerl inaugurated the first class with a
moving lecture in the Chapel of St. Basil. We were also fortunate to receive a major federal grant of
$3.25 million to assist us in our initiative to reopen the School of Nursing. We are committed to make a
major contribution to the Houston community by providing nurses formed by the tradition of Catholic
nursing and a liberal arts education. We invite your support of this program that will provide the quality of nurses
we all desire for ourselves and our families.
As we develop our plans for a nursing program, our intent is to enhance all science and health-related
programs. We have achieved great success in preparing our students to compete in these areas of study. Over
the past five years, 82% of our pre-med students have been granted at least one medical school interview, and
67% are ultimately accepted, compared to a 42.7% acceptance rate nationwide. We believe these numbers
indicate not only the success of the Pre-Medical Program but also the high quality of teaching at St. Thomas.
We pass on that high quality of teaching to those who choose teaching as a career path. Innovative programming
and development have led to increased enrollment and exciting offerings in our School of Education.
A $2.8 million Title V Grant from the U.S. Department of Education funds the Promoting Postbaccalaureate
Opportunities for Hispanic Americans Program to achieve parity among Hispanic graduate students and
other underrepresented groups in retention and graduation rates. The Education Graduate Student Success
Center opened last spring, and online graduate education courses began in fall 2010.
We hope that you will take the opportunity to learn more about our students and the academic programs on
campus. The University of St Thomas is constantly increasing its effort to reach out to all parts of our
community as we find new ways to strengthen the proud legacy of the founding Basilian Fathers. Thank you
very much for your confidence in our mission and your continued support and encouragement.
With best wishes for a peaceful and joyful year,
Dr. Robert Ivany
PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY

† Deceased
Because gifts are made to many programs and in so many different ways, it is possible that we have omitted or incorrectly listed the name of a donor or the class year of an
alumnus or alumna. Any omission is unintentional. The Office of Institutional Advancement (713-525-3100) would appreciate notification regarding errors or omissions.
Thank you.

We are the University of St. Thomas, the Catholic university in the heart of Houston.
We are committed to the Catholic intellectual tradition and the dialogue between faith
and reason. By pursuing excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service, we embody
and instill in our students the core values of our founders, the Basilian Fathers:
goodness, discipline, and knowledge.
We foster engagement in a diverse, collaborative community. As a comprehensive
university grounded in the liberal arts, we educate students to think critically,
communicate effectively, succeed professionally, and lead ethically.
