New York’s schools serve as educational nests for our children, fostering their minds as well as their hearts, and the mission of P.S. 87 proudly continues this tradition. The students of P.S. 87 learn in an environment that celebrates both scholarship and teamwork, a background that will serve them well as they become the future leaders of our City. Congratulations to all on another year of learning and opportunity for our students, and best wishes for a successful evening tonight! Sincerely, Scott M. Stringer Manhattan Borough President CHAIR GALE A. BREWER TECHNOLOGY IN GOVERNMENT COMMITTEES COUNCIL MEMBER, DISTRICT 6 MANHATTAN DISTRICT OFFICE 563 COLUMBUS AVENUE AT 87TH STREET NEW YORK, NY 10024 (212) 873-0282 FAX (212) 873-0279 CITY HALL OFFICE 250 BROADWAY, SUITE 1744 NEW YORK, NY 10007 (212) 788-6975 FAX (212) 513-7717 AGING THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK [email protected] www.council.nyc.gov FINANCE GENERAL WELFARE HIGHER EDUCATION MENTAL HEALTH, MENTAL RETARDATION, ALCOHOLISM, DRUG ABUSE & DISABILITY SERVICES OVERSIGHT & INVESTIGATIONS WATERFRONTS March 28, 2009 P.S. 87 Community 160 West 78th Street New York, NY 10024 Dear Friends: I am pleased and honored to join in welcoming all who have come together this evening to support P.S. 87 at its annual auction. Thanks to your dedication, generosity, and vision, tonight’s event will raise funds to help sustain and enhance a remarkable school. The administrators, teachers, and parents of the P.S. 87 community strive every day to be a “community of learners.” Your success has not gone unnoticed: P.S. 87’s population has doubled from 450 to 900 students in the last 17 years, and in 2007 you received a Blackboard Award for Outstanding Public Elementary School. Yours is a community that takes pride in academic achievement, in offering enrichment programs, in the ethnic and economic diversity of its student body, and in embracing a multicultural education experience. You epitomize what is best about New York City public schools, and those parents, educators, and students who strive every day to make them better. Let me add a special note of appreciation to all those in your community who contribute to the Dual Language Program, which offers an immersion setting for Spanish-speaking students who need to develop their English language skills, and for English-speaking students who want to learn Spanish as a second language. As your representative in the New York City Council since 2002, it has been my pleasure and honor to work closely with P.S. 87 in pursuit of its goals. In the challenging times ahead, I look forward to continuing that work and to assisting in every way I can to further your outstanding achievements in administration, teaching, learning, and parental support. On this important evening, at the mid point of another successful year, please accept my congratulations to everyone involved with P.S. 87. Sincerely, Gale A. Brewer 5 Starry, Starry Night Dear Families, Welcome to the 2009 PS 87 Auction! I hope you enjoy this evening where you can have fun while supporting our wonderful school. This auction raises money that pays for Kindergarten Teaching Assistants, Professional Development for all of our teachers, books for our children, furniture for our classrooms, Science supplies, trips, assemblies, and so much more. As the lucky principal of PS 87, I do not know how our school could function at its energetic pace without the ENORMOUS help of the PA fundraising activities. When I think back to my first PS 87 Auction in 2007, I still remember my amazement at the energy, spirit, laughter, size, and intensity of the whole event! I was thrilled, and I had a wonderful time! While the night seemed professionally organized, it was clearly grown from the community and very heartfelt. That is the magic of our school - no matter how large, we never lose track of our hearts. Tonight is yet another opportunity to support PS 87 in as many ways as possible. From the smallest to the largest bid, all are important to the life of our school. Your presence at the auction, bringing along others to share the fun, and participating in this celebratory night is so appreciated. With Respect, Jacqui A Night Under the Stars Each Spring brings two large events that help capture the community and the spirit of PS87 – the annual auction and the annual spring fair. We feel grateful to all the families, children, teachers, staff, and other friends of PS87 who keep the positive spirit of PS87 going, day-in and day-out. The energy and good will is spectacular, whether it’s during a major event like the auction, or every day as families drop off and pick up their children Thanks to all for making this a great year so far, and thanks for whatever contribution you’ve been able to make to the school. Once again, many dedicated people have pulled off the wonderful auction. We are extremely grateful to the wise Maureen Van Bloem, who has masterminded this event for many years and who’s family is “graduating” from PS87 this year. Many thanks to all the other parents and friends who have directly contributed to this event. It should be noted that this is the first year that PS87 is participating at the volunteer swap with other schools such as PS9 and Hunter and Anderson. We help with their events, they help with ours – this helps free up parents to enjoy the moment at their own schools. You’ll see some of volunteers from neighboring schools at the auction. Our final thanks go to you, for being a part of this event, and helping close our school year on a joyous note. With respect, Beth Servetar and Michael Kraft 2 Here’s to the Night Regardless of the weather, tonight all the PS87 stars are out. And are they ever shining bright. Your energy, enthusiasm, commitment – from parents, students, teachers, staff and businesses from the PS87 Community are all on display here tonight. Each of you light the way by setting such stellar examples for our students. You can see the PS87 generosity is in full force - everyone has contributed something. We have a constellation of class projects, items and services tonight. And a special thank you to our tireless PS87 Volunteers. Their weeks of meetings, countless chats at drop off, hundreds of emails, countless phone calls and tons of text messages have helped create tonight’s auction where the sky’s the limit. Thank you to everyone who has selflessly given their time, energy and ideas, for doing more than your share to make the 2009 PS87 Auction our most successful ever. PS87 truly is a living, breathing community of stars. Maureen Van Bloem, Jessica Pratt and Linda Hahn PS – Thank you for eight years of thoughtful, kind and loving PS87 Auction memories. As I move on, I know that I will miss the excitement and magic of this very special evening. – Maureen 3 Space Rangers This is a special thank you to everyone who gave so generously of his or her time, goods, energy and emotion into making our PS 87 night under the stars so special!
