Have you ever had your heart ripped out? It's not a nice feeling, is it?
That's why KARO does it very gently and tries to put it back into your
chest carefully at the end of her songs. This girl, who has never found
a band and then one day just stopped searching, who plays the guitar
like a ninth grader at a camp fire, somehow manages to take you to
another planet with her self-taught magic and her beautiful voice. KARO always did everything by
herself. She learnt how to speak English without everyone noticing she was German. She learnt how
to play the guitar with a beginner's book and her ears and fingers. She taped herself listening to her
voice over and over again. She listened to Jeff Buckley, Ella Fitzgerald, Carpenters, Low,
Portishead, Cat Power, Feist and – yes, you're not misreading – Céline Dion, whose music is crap,
yes, yes and yes, but whose voice is pretty amazing when she goes in for the kill...
All of this started over 12 years ago, constantly developing in baby steps, bit by bit – but there had
always been one major problem: KARO was so nervous on stage, she couldn't stand up straight. Not
having a band didn't make it any easier, so it took her until 2006 to find the courage to take part in an
open mic night (it might have helped that a hopelessly drunk Cat Power had sung a song with her
feet on KARO's shoulders at a show in Frankfurt) – but the result was overwhelming: Everyone was
quiet, no one even dared to order a drink. After she had played „The Sailor“, the audience didn't let
her leave the stage. Someone at the show told her about a website called „myspace“, and only a
month after KARO had uploaded some shitty demos, she was booked for her first show – in France.
In the following two years she played over 60 shows which she booked all by herself. After finding a
label in Luxembourg she wasn't satisfied with their work and decided to change to Normoton, a much
more competent partner. Each of KARO's songs is a unique piece of work, heart and mind. „You
don't Know“ and „Wine and Water“ are the closest KARO gets to folk music, „Not in Love Song“ is
pure pop despite its lack of drums, „The Hunger“ and „My Heart is Bent“ are downright indie-disco,
and no category has been invented yet for the breathtaking finale „Sing out, Heart!“ - yet all of those
different songs blend together perfectly to captivate a lifetime of heartache in 40 minutes that seem
like 40 seconds and make you wanna put the CD on repeat forever. repeat forever... at least...

Wenn jemand ein Demo aufnimmt mit einem Richtmikro, das die Großeltern in
den 70ern dazu nutzten, Blockflötenvorträge an Weihnachten aufzunehmen,
und mit einem kaputten Notebook, das das eingebaute Mikro nicht
ausschaltet, so dass die Festplatte die ganze Zeit im Hintergrund puckert,
dann erwartet dieser Mensch nicht, dass besagtes Demo auf Bayern2 und
Bayern3 gespielt wird. Er erwartet auch nicht, dass er mit diesem Demo einen
Auftritt im Münchner Funkhaus gewinnt und innerhalb von 2 Jahren 100.000
Leute auf seine Myspace-Seite klicken. Und er 60 Konzerte spielt, weil ihn die Leute ihn fragen, ob er spielen
will. Genau das ist Karo aber passiert mit „The Sailor“.
Bis Ende 2006 war Karo ein völlig unbeschriebenes Blatt. Mit 26 war sie noch nie öffentlich aufgetreten, hatte
noch nie vor ihren Freunden gesungen. Nach dem Kinderchor und einer Schulband hatte sie nie das
Selbstvertrauen, irgendjemandem ihre eigenen Lieder zu vorzusingen. Gitarre spielt sie wie ein Neuntklässler
am Lagerfeuer. Beats programmiert sie mit Fruity Loops, nicht einmal mit der neusten Version. Und doch ist da
so etwas Unbeschreibliches, was ihre Freunde, nachdem sie sie zum ersten Mal gehört hatten, dazu brachte,
sie zu einer Open Stage in Würzburg zu schleppen. Da ist diese unglaubliche Stimme, die durch Mark und Bein
fährt, und diese Lieder, die von vorne bis hinten stimmen und wahr sind, so gut ein Mensch seine eigene
Wahrheit zeigen kann.
Über Myspace kam dann auch ihr erstes Konzert in Frankreich zustande, bei dem jemand ihr Demo kaufte und
es an ein Label in Luxemburg weiterreichte, das sofort begeistert war. Karo unterschrieb und nahm ihr erstes
Album „Sing out, Heart!“ selbst bei sich zuhause auf. Aber das Label, selbst in der Gründungsphase, konnte sie
nicht richtig unterstützen, weshalb sie zu Normoton wechselte, wo man sie mit offenen Armen empfing und nun
das Album noch einmal mit professionellerer Unterstützung veröffentlicht.
Stilistisch ist das Album schwer einzuordnen. Am besten nähert man sich über die Musik, die Karo selbst gerne
hört – Jeff Buckley, Feist, Cat Power (die einmal „Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground“ von den White Stripes mit
ihren Füssen auf Karos Schultern sang), Broken Social Scene, Low, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Carpenters,
Portishead, Songs: Ohia, um nur die Wchtigsten zu nennen.
So fehlen den meisten auch die Worte, wenn sie Karos Musik beschreiben wollen. Das hat man alles schon mal
irgendwie gehört, aber es war noch nie so da.

Würzburger Songwriterin Karo, die einen Seelenstriptease hingelegt hat, der seinesgleichen sucht. Ihre zerbrechlichen LoFi-Songs brauchen nur ihre Stimme, eine leicht angezerrte Stratocaster und punktuell ein Schlagzeug vom Band um das
ganze Studio-3 inklusive der komplett angetanzten Band TV ON THE RADIO gefangen zu nehmen.
LAURY REICHART (ON3-RADIO): Interessant ist: Alle, die Karos Musik mal gehört haben, sind ungefähr gleich hilflos,
wenn sie erklären wollen, was so bewegend daran ist. Ist es die Stimme? Das Songwriting? Die Texte? Unmöglich, das
genau zu bestimmen, denn wahrscheinlich ist es einfach alles zusammen.
