B-MOVIE is a documentary about music, art and chaos in the Wild West Berlin of the 1980s: the walled-in
city which became the creative melting pot for a special kind of sub and pop culture, attracting ingenious
dilettantes and world famous celebrities alike. Before the iron curtain would fall, artists and communards,
squatters and hedonists of all kinds would be drawn to Berlin to play with its fire. It was not about long-term
commercial success, but about living for the moment – the kick – the here and now. With mostly unreleased TV
and film footage, photos and original interviews, B-MOVIE tells the story of life in the divided city, a cultural
interzone in which everything and anything seemed ­possible in a place unlike anywhere else in Europe. It’s
a fast-paced collage of stories from a frenzied but creative decade, starting with punk and ending with the
Love Parade. All in a city where the days are short and the nights are endless. This is a time when Berlin
was like a B-MOVIE: colourfully cheap and trashy, threatened and thrown ­together, anxious and ambitious,
clubbed and caned, stoned and strung out, drunk, drugged and – just very special.
CONTENT
In 1979, Mark Reeder – a musician from Manchester, England – is 21 when he leaves Joy Division‘s
legendary music scene to come to West Berlin. Initially, he is fascinated by German electronic music, but
as he delves into the urban jungle of the divided city he discovers that the vibrant tension in this town is the
perfect breeding ground for the artistic avant-garde, mixing underground and pop culture. Soon Reeder is
right in the middle of it all; he works as a record label representative, a roadie, a bouncer, musician, manager,
sound engineer and even as an actor in short and feature films. The exciting Berlin scene is always in motion,
in this entanglement of talent there are new bands to be devoured all in constantly changing constellations.
Reeder meets them all – the hero for a day of which David Bowie once sang. Amongst those who made ​​it,
we can find the most prominent directors, musicians, writers and photographers. Then, in the mid-80’s, as
everything starts to degenerate into the mainstream and as Reeder’s own band dissolves, he takes over a bar
and to make ends meet, synchronizes porn movies and unknowingly produces the first and last indie-rock
album of the GDR. But the next big bang is imminent: acid house and techno, the final musical innovation
of the last century is ready and waiting. Reeder becomes one of the 100-odd participants of the first Love
Parade, a positive demonstration with music on the city’s main road, the Kurfürsten­damm. Months later,
West Berlin is history.

Annette Humpe, die mit Ideal zur Speerspitze der Neuen Deutschen Welle wurde; die 20jährige Gudrun
Gut, die mit ihren avantgardistischen Bands (Mania D., Malaria!) ein neues androgynes Frauenbild und
Selbstbewusstsein in der Musikszene prägte; Nena, die mit einem Friedenslied einen Welthit landet und
das deutsche Fräuleinwunder der 80er wird; Blixa Bargeld, der mit seinen Einstürzenden Neubauten der
Popmusik neue Impulse gab; dem Australier Nick Cave, der in Berlin kreative Inspiration suchte und auch
fand; oder Westbam, der mit Techno das letzte große Genre der Popmusik erfand. Es gibt ein Wiedersehen
mit Tom Kummer und Kain Karawahn, die die Mauer in Brand setzen, mit Tilda Swinton, die die Mauer
umradelt, mit Martin Kippenberger, der das S.O.36 betrieb und mit Jim Rakete, David Bowie, Christiane
F., Dr. Motte, Keith Haring, Kiddy Citny, Ben Becker und vielen anderen.
Der großartige Soundtrack dieser Zeit ist von Westbam, Joy Division, Sex Pistols, Ideal, Die Ärzte, Die Toten
Hosen, Einstürzende Neubauten, Nena, Malaria!, Der Wahre Heino, Notorische Reflexe, Shark Vegas, Die
Unbekannten, Anne Clark u.v.a., der Score ist von Mark Reeder höchstpersönlich (im 5.1 Remix).

JÖRG A. HOPPE
Jörg A. Hoppe kommt aus Hagen. Hier war er seit
den 70ern Manager von Extrabreit, Konzert- und
Festivalveranstalter, Labelbetreiber, Zeitungs­macher
und Programm-Kinobetreiber. 1983 zieht Hoppe nach
Westberlin, so wie vor ihm schon viele andere aus
der heimischen Musikszene, u.a. Annette und Inga
Humpe und Nena. In West-Berlin betreibt Hoppe
mit Gudrun Gut u.a. ein Independent MC- u. VHSKassetten-Label; 1984 veröffentlicht und verlegt er

die ersten Westbam Schallplatten. Mit dem Start des
Kabelpilotprojekts/ Offener Kanal 1985 entdeckt er
seine Leidenschaft und Liebe für Fernsehen und Film; Moderator seiner ersten TV-Sendung: Der wahre
Heino. 1988 produziert er für das Goethe Institut den Film Gefühl und Härte – Zur Geschichte der Deutschen
Rockmusik (Moderation Nina Hagen), der integraler Bestandteil einer von Jim Rakete und Conny Konzack
kuratierten internationalen Wanderausstellung ist. 1989 geht er zum Münchener Musik-TV-Sender Musikbox
(später Tele 5) und wird dort Redaktionsleiter. 1991 gründet Hoppe mit Christoph Post die MME Film- u.
TV-Produktions- GmbH. Das Unternehmen konzentriert sich anfänglich nur auf Musik im TV; unzählige
Musikshows laufen über Jahre. Hoppe ist später auch Initiator, Namensgeber und Gründungsgesellschafter
von VIVA; MME betreibt schließlich für Viacom die Musiksender VH-1 und MTV2pop. Im Jahr 2000
erhält Hoppe den Adolf Grimme Preis für POP2000 (ARD), eine 12-teilige und 9-stündige Dokureihe
„zur Geschichte der Popmusik und Jugendkultur in Deutschland“, für die er über 120 deutsche Musiker
interviewen ließ. Die aufwendige CD Box (Spiegel Edition / 2001), veröffentlicht auf GRÖNLAND/EMI,
wird ein Bestseller, Sampler und diverse Singles werden Top 5 Hits. Neben vielen anderen Auszeichnungen
(u.a. Golden Apple Award für Straight to You, die erste autorisierte Nick Cave Doku) erhält Hoppe 2002
den ECHO (Medienmann des Jahres) und 2004 den Deutschen Fernsehpreis.
Seit 2011 ist Hoppe Gesellschafter und Geschäftsführer der DEF Media GmbH; seit 2013 auch in einem
Gemeinschaftsunternehmen mit Jan-Josef Liefers, der RADIO DORIA FILM GmbH.

KLAUS MAECK
1979 eröffnete Maeck den ersten Punk-Plattenladen
in Hamburg (Rip Off), der schon bald für kurze
Zeit die neue deutsche Musik weltweit vertrieb.
Auch Maeck’s Begeisterung für Film fing in
den frühen 80ern an: in Hamburg und Berlin
produzierte er Super 8-Kurzfilme und einen
Spielfilm (Decoder, mit FM Einheit und Christiane
F.), bevor er für einige Jahre ganz nach Berlin
zog. 1988 gründete er zusammen mit Mark Chung
(Einstürzende Neubauten) den unabhängigen
Musikverlag Freibank. Nach weiteren Filmen (die
Dokumentationen W.S.Burroughs: Commissioner of Sewers, 1991 und Einstürzende Neubauten: Liebeslieder,
1993) gründete er schließlich 2003 zusammen mit Fatih Akin die Filmproduktion corazón international, mit
der er neben Akins Filmen auch Newcomer wie Özgür Yildirim und Xiaolu Guo sowie Ko-Produktionen
realisierte. Seine letzte corazón-Produktion beschäftigte sich, wenn auch fiktiv, ebenfalls mit den 80er Jahren:
die Mockumentary Fraktus - Das letzte Kapitel der Musikgeschichte von Studio Braun und Lars Jessen.
2013 gründete er seine eigene Filmproduktion Interzone Pictures.

HEIKO LANGE
HEIKO LANGE, geboren 1976, ist ein deutscher
Dokumentarfimer. Nach dem Abschluss des Studiums
der Sportwissenschaften im Jahr 2000 (DiplomSportwissenschaftler / DSHS) fing der Wahl-Berliner
an als Regisseur, Autor und Producer für TV-Shows,
TV-Dokumentationen und Musik-Videos zu arbeiten.
2011 gründete Heiko Lange und sein Geschäftspartner
Alexander von Sturmfeder (Produzent und Editor) die
scenes from Film-Produktionsfirma, die ihren Fokus
auf internationale Dokumentarfilme legt. Gleich mit
seinem ersten eigenproduzierten Dokumentarfilm
„The Noise of Cairo“ (2011) gelang Heiko Lange ein internationaler Festivalerfolg. Neben dem „Audience
Award“ für den besten Dokumentarfilm beim Moscars Film Festival inCairo wurde der Film bei den United
Nation Film Festivals 2013 in San Francisco mit dem Preis „EDIT AWARD“ ausgezeichnet.
Der auf der diesjährigen Berlinale seine Weltpremiere feiernde Dokumentarfilm „B-Movie - Lust & Sound
in West-Berlin“ ist die zweite Kinodokumentation des jungen Regisseurs, bei der scenes from auch als KoProduzent auftritt.

The British musician, producer, actor and author Mark Reeder is our main protagonist. His personal story
is the binding thread running throughout this collage. B-Movie consists mostly of authentic contemporary
documents from numerous archives – a large extent taken from previously unseen or unreleased video
material and Super 8 films made by witnesses, artists and filmmakers.

Selected musicians accompany the various chapters of the
film with their audio commentary, such as Gudrun Gut,
who presented a highly respected new androgynous woman
image with her avant-garde bands Mania D or Malaria!, or
Blixa Bargeld, who gave a whole new impetus to pop music
with his unconventional band Einstürzende Neubauten,
the Australian singer Nick Cave, who sought and found
creative inspiration and more in Berlin or Westbam who
should be credited with inventing the last great genre of
pop music with Techno.
The impressive soundtrack includes music from Joy
Division, Westbam, Einstürzende Neubauten, Die Ärzte,
Die Toten Hosen, Nena, Malaria!, Der Wahre Heino,
Notorische Reflexe, Tödliche Doris and Mark Reeder’s

„It begins with a journey through the night, through the West Berlin subculture that is written
about so much these days, especially after David Bowie’s recent reminisces about the frontier city
of Berlin in his latest comeback single. Westbam fast forwards a few years in his latest video for
‚You Need The Drugs‘. We find ourselves in the early eighties, it‘s basically the same subculture,
only now it appears more exalted and depraved. It is a pleasure to discover people who were then
unknown, but who are very well known today, only thirty years younger, mostly ignoring or turning
away from the camera (amazingly different from today, where we embrace the image and are
trained to play to the camera for Instagram and Facebook).“
