David Farragut was a naval officer for decades but his crowning achievements took place during the Civil War. Farragut was assigned to command the West Gulf Blockading Squadron, and seize New Orleans and the Mississippi from the Confederacy. Farragut gained control of the Mississippi, providing a crucial foothold for the battle of Vicksburg and also led the attack on Mobile Bay. After the battle of New Orleans, Farragut was promoted to admiral, a position he maintained for the rest of his life. Two pins say G.A. R. A delegate’s badge to the 25th annual convention Ladies of the G.A.R. in Ithaca, New York, June 25,26,27 1918. A pin from the national encampment G.A.R. in San Francisco. A button from the G.A.R. Memorial Day, Auburn, New York. A brass medallion dated 1898 from the 32nd encampment at Cincinnati Sept. 5-10. Founded in 1866 in Decatur, Illinois, the G.A.R. became one of the first advocacy groups in American politics, supporting voting rights for black veterans, helping to make Memorial Day a national holiday, lobbying Congress to establish veterans’ pensions. It was dissolved in 1956 when its last member Albert Woolson (1847-1956) died. Camp Clark was established in 1908 and was used as an assembly point for troops serving in Central America, in the Mexican border war, and in World War I. In 1942, the camp was reopened as a prisoner-of-war camp to house Italian and German prisoners. Camp Clark has played a role in every major US conflict from the Mexican border insurrection in 1916 to the present War on Terrorism in Iraq. “In 1916, Camp Clark served as the mobilization point for six thousand of the troops sent to the Mexican border insurrection and to hunt for Pancho Villa in the southwestern United States and Mexico. In 1918, nearly ten thousand men arrived at Camp Clark before being shipped out to Europe to join in the final fighting of World War I (WWI). Folmer Graflex was the company that made and oversaw production of all US WW II cameras. Four of the posters are technical, either describing Graflex equipment or the overall collection. The other 50 are action 13” x 9.75” photographs of combat in both the European and Pacific theaters. Examples of the posters include Dual to Death, Soldier of the Emperor, Landing In New Britain Surf, Salvo Sinks Jap Patrol Ship, North Atlantic Sentinels, Night Shelling Mt. Bust of Millard Fillmore, 13th President of the United States from 1850-1853, who as vice-president succeeded Zachary Taylor after his assassination. The obverse of the token reads “For The Whole Country.” The reverse mimics a US gold piece, with the Eagle and arrows and olive branch model. Piece is well worn from age.
