Künftig müssen 9 Milliarden Menschen für eine nachhaltige Zukunft neue Wege gehen. Globaler Klima- und
Landnutzungswandel, dramatischer Artenrückgang und Verteilungsungerechtigkeiten erfordern eine gesellschaftliche
Transformation weltweit, deren konkrete Umsetzung noch
weitgehend unklar ist. Ein besseres Verständnis dieser Phänomene aus natur-, sozial- und geisteswissenschaftlicher Sicht
sowie die Einbettung dieser Erkenntnisse in die Diskurse um
die Zukunftsfähigkeit des Lebens auf der Erde sind Kernziele
des IRI THESys.
In the future, 9 billion people will need to find new paths
toward a sustainable global future. A comprehensive transformation is required to address impacts of global climate and
land-use change, a dramatic loss in biodiversity, and increasing
inequality of distribution; how we will achieve this transformation is not yet clear. The core aims of IRI THESys are therefore
a better understanding of these phenomena from a multi-disciplinary perspective uniting the natural sciences, social sciences
and humanities, and the embedding of interdisciplinary findings in discourses about the future viability of life on Earth.
Das IRI THESys verbindet qualitative und quantitative
Forschung sowie empirische und normative Ansätze für ein
besseres Verständnis von Mensch-Umwelt-Systemen. Es vernetzt Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler aus verschiedenen Disziplinen und Standorten der Humboldt-Universität
mit regionalen, nationalen und internationalen Partnereinrichtungen. Gemeinsam gehen die Forscherinnen und Forscher Fragen zu nachhaltiger Land- und Ressourcennutzung,
Prozessen der Urbanisierung im 21. Jahrhundert, Auswirkungen des Klimawandels sowie intra- und intergenerationeller
Umweltgerechtigkeit nach.
The IRI THESys combines quantitative and qualitative research methods and empirical and normative research approaches to better understand complex human-environment systems. It provides a platform for cooperation between scientists
from various disciplines and departments of the HumboldtUniversität and regional, national and international partner
institutions, who collaborate to solve interdisciplinary research
questions related to land- and resource-use, urbanization in the
21st century, climate change impacts and intra- and intergenerational environmental justice.
Forschung am IRI THESys widmet sich den drei
Schwerpunkten „Leben innerhalb planetarer Grenzen:
Transformation von Natur und Kultur“, „Wissenschaft
für und mit Gesellschaft: Auseinandersetzungen um
Globalen Wandel“ und „Räumliche Strukturen des Anthropozäns: Muster und Veränderung“.
Research at IRI THESys follows three themes „Respecting planetary boundaries: Transformation of nature
and culture”, „Science for and with society: Contesting
global change” and „Spatial structures of the anthropocene: Patterns of change”.
Das IRI THESys fördert mit interdisziplinären Nachwuchsgruppen, einem fakultätsübergreifenden Graduiertenprogramm und öffentlichkeitswirksamen Aktivitäten wie Vorträgen, Sommeruniversitäten und Ausstellungen eine neue
Generation wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses und den Dialog
mit zivilgesellschaftlichen Perspektiven. Auf diese Weise wird
Nachhaltigkeit nicht nur erforscht, sondern auch angestoßen.
The IRI THESys actively promotes the advancement of
young scientists through its interdisciplinary junior research
groups and a cross-faculty graduate program and supports the
dialogue between science and civil society through public activities such as lecture series, summer universities and exhibitions.
In this way, the institute supports sustainability not only in research, but also in innovation and exchange.
