Once you’ve thought about it and decided that yes, you are an excellent
candidate for dog ownership, you’ll need to figure out how to find the dog
of your dreams. But before you embark on your search, there’s another
decision you’ll need to make, and it directly affects where you’ll begin
looking for your dog.
breed, look for a few champions among nearer
relatives, such as the parents and grandparents.
In addition, an AKC championship is no
guarantee of the health or character of the dog
who earns it. I have known dogs with epilepsy,
hip dysplasia, and personality defects who
earn enough points to get their championships.
Unfortunately, some breeders care more
about ribbons on a wall and bragging about
their “gorgeous” dogs than about health and
personality. Don’t fall for it. “AKC-registered”
means nothing in terms of quality, health, or
temperament of the dog; it simply means that the
breeders have submitted the proper paperwork
to the American Kennel Club. Don’t make the
mistake of thinking that every AKC dog is ready for
Westminster. Even casual breeders who have good
intentions often simply don’t know enough about
the perils of genetics and breeding to produce
good puppies, especially these days when so
many inherited diseases abound. They often fail
to perform the proper genetic screening for the
parents, thus exacerbating the problems.
Some people are fooled into thinking that “Both
parents on premises” is a sign of good breeding.
Actually it just means that the breeder had two
dogs of opposite sexes. Many good breeders go
Understand the

across the country or have their females artificially
inseminated; however, you should at least be able
to see a picture of the sire.
Some unscrupulous breeders bill their
maladjusted, oversized, inappropriately aggressive
dogs as “extra”: more Rottweiler; more Pit Bull;
more Chow Chow; more German Shepherd.
Most people have all they can handle with the
regular specimens of these breeds, let alone
anything “extra.” Terms like “Needs adult home”
or “Protective” often means the dog is aggressive
with kids. It is a bad idea to bring home a dog
with behavior problems that you may not be able
to handle.
Here’s my personal favorite: “Rare color.” If a
puppy were “rare” in a desirable way, it wouldn’t
be advertised in the paper. There are no rare
colors or patterns in the sense that it makes the
dog more valuable. There are, however, some
“rare” colors that disqualify a dog from the show
ring. Parti-colored Poodles, “blue Bassets,” and
other anomalies are not desirable, and in some
breeds, have genetic problems associated with
them. For example, in many breeds, white can
signify hearing or eye problems. Check the list of
accepted colors for your breed and don’t be led
astray. The same is true for eye color. With the
exception of the Siberian Husky and a very few
others, eyes should be brown. Always check the
breed standard before you go looking to find out
what is and what is not acceptable.
Friends and Neighbors
Some people get their pets from a friend, relative,
or neighbor. And while this is a good source for
an older dog (you probably know everything about
the animal already), it may be a poorer place from
which to get a puppy, unless that friend, relative,
or neighbor is a person who is truly an expert on
the breed and proves it by entering competitions
like dog shows, field trials, or tracking events. That
makes your friend fall into the “breeder class,”
which we are going to discuss next.

you’re looking for a
“pet-quality” puppy. Pet
quality doesn’t mean
there will be anything
wrong with the puppy. It merely means that in
the breeder’s opinion, the dog will not achieve a
championship in the show ring. Eyes that are too
light, wrong color nose, or ears hung too high
or low are just a few unimportant factors that
may limit a dog’s “show-worthiness” but have no
impact on how good a pet the puppy will be. Even
stranger, from an outsider’s point of view, is that
many breeders want their line to have a certain,
instantly recognizable “look.” That look may involve
a particular type of head, coat color, movement,
or, in performance dogs, certain special abilities.
If the puppy does not measure up to the breeder’s
particular expectations, he automatically becomes
a pet-quality dog and your golden opportunity.
Puppies bred by a

may not meet the
breed standard.

Boston Terrier
By Patricia F. Lehman
The Boston Terrier, ranked #20 in dog registrations by the
American Kennel Club (AKC), is a versatile dog who thrives as
both a family lapdog and active competitor in several canine sports.
Loving and loyal, small and compact, the Boston is the perfect size
to snuggle under the covers and also accompany his family on their
daily excursions. All newly authored text explains how the Boston
can be trained to do almost anything, from performing cute tricks
to excelling in obedience training and performance sports.

Although neutering is major surgery, it’s considered safe—especially for puppies
who have smaller reproductive organs. (Neutered dogs can’t compete in the show
ring but may participate in all obedience and performance events.)
BREED-SPECIFIC PROBLEMS
The Boston Terrier is a hardy and vigorous dog who remains energetic and playful
throughout his lifetime. In fact, a life span of 10 to 14 years isn’t uncommon.
However, breeders, owners, and veterinarians have identified several problems
that are significant to anyone considering adding a Boston to their household.
Some are hereditary (passed from one generation to another through the genes)
or congenital (present at birth). Others occur as a result of infections, exposure
to environmental toxins, injuries, or advancing age. The Boston Terrier Club of
America (BTCA) has conducted studies that have uncovered the presence of
the conditions listed below. The Boston Terrier Health Survey is available online
at the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals’ (OFA) website (www.offa.org). The
Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF) (www.vmdb.org) and the OFA maintain
registries for diseases that affect Bostons. To help reduce the occurrence

The most important step you can take to ensure your Boston’s health—next to
obtaining regular vaccinations—is to neuter your puppy before he or she reaches
sexual maturity. The surgical procedure in which the sex organs are removed is
called castrating in males and spaying in females. Neutering not only prevents
the possibility that dogs will sire an unwanted litter or become accidentally
pregnant, but it also offers numerous benefits to their physical and emotional
well-being. For example, males are less likely to show undesirable traits, such as
roaming and marking their territories, following castration. It also lowers the odds
of getting testicular cancer, prostate disease, and perianal adenoma—a growth
around the anus. Spaying before six months of age nearly eliminates the chances

HEALTH OF YOUR BOSTON TERRIER
Other worms that affect dogs include
hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms, and whipworms. Worms enter the body
as a result of consuming raw meat or fish or from contact with contaminated
feces or soil. Fleas are the typical intermediate hosts of tapeworms, whereas the
larval stage of hookworms can penetrate the skin. Because puppies may be born
with worms or contract them while nursing from an infected dam, they should be
wormed at two to three weeks of age and again at five to six weeks. Remember
to bring a fresh stool sample to the first veterinary visit. To prescribe the best
medication, if needed, your veterinarian must examine the specimen under a
microscope to identify the kind of worm involved. She can then choose the safest
and most effective wormer to use. When your pet is rid of worms, guard against
reinfestation by keeping your yard free of feces. Also, avoid places where strange
dogs gather. Worms are less of a problem for adult dogs, who seem to acquire a
natural immunity that helps them fight off internal parasites.

henever a symbol is needed to represent fearlessness, strength, and
boundless persistence, the Bulldog makes the perfect stand-in. Sports
teams from the University of Georgia to Australia’s National Rugby League
have embraced him as a mascot, hoping their players will emulate his virtues.
Advertisers use his determined mug and brawny build to represent the rugged
durability of their products. The Bulldog is the official mascot of the United
States Marine Corps and so linked to England, his country of origin, that his image
is often used to sum up the Brits’ indomitable spirit.
Yet under this tough exterior lies the proverbial heart of gold. Ask any breeders
why they’re so devoted to this breed and they’ll admit that they’re attracted
to his unique physique. But what really seals the deal for them is the Bulldog’s
personality. “They’re the most loving, endearing, affectionate breed,” says Brenda
Newcomb of Newcomb Bulldogs, who’s shared her life with Bulldogs for 50
years. “They read your emotions. All they want is to be with you. Bulldogs are the
ultimate companion and fabulous for families with children.”
Let’s take a closer look at how the Bulldog has earned such respect from his
devoted fans, starting with the breeder’s bible—the official American Kennel Club
(AKC) standard.
You may not be familiar with the Anatolian Shepherd Dog, an Entlebucher
Mountain Dog, or the Norwegian Lundehund—just three of AKC’s 170 official
breeds—but everyone knows the Bulldog. There’s no mistaking his massive head or
his low-slung body, or the barrel chest and broad shoulders that any bodybuilder
would envy. And who can help smiling when looking at his funny face, with its
signature wrinkles, jowls, and snub-nosed snout? Topping it off is his unusual
rolling gait, which the Bulldog standard itself describes as “peculiar.” (More
frequently, it’s compared to a staggering drunken sailor or a ship navigating rough
waves at sea.) Everything about this medium-sized tank of a dog should suggest
“great stability, vigor, and strength,” states the standard. Throw in an expansive grin
and the result is one of the most recognizable breeds on the planet.
Claire Johnson, the other half of Newcomb Bulldogs, emphasizes that the
Bulldog is as far from the archetypal wolf-type dog breeds as you can get. “The
Bulldog is a breed of extremes,” says Johnson. “There’s nothing moderate about
him. For breeders, it’s a constant struggle to maintain his special characteristics
because nature wants to revert to a generic dog. It’s our responsibility to preserve
the distinctive features of this breed, which are based on form following function
during his bull-baiting past.”

Puppy Care
By Tammy Gagne
Becoming a dog owner can be one of the most rewarding
decisions you will ever make. Whether you have never owned a pet
or you already have one or two dogs at home, the idea of getting
a new puppy may be appealing. After all, dogs make life more
fun, and there is something truly exceptional about the bond you
can form with these wonderful creatures. It is essential, though,
that when you decide to add a puppy to your life and routine, you
are truly ready for everything it entails. As adorable as they are,
puppies need lots of guidance and attention in order to become
well-behaved, happy members of the family. Dogs 101 Puppy Care
explains everything you need to know about choosing, raising, and
caring for a puppy, including information about supplies, nutrition,
grooming, training, health care, and more.

I have found semi-moist food to be an excellent training tool for puppies. If
you take your new pet to puppy kindergarten, the instructor may ask you to
bring your dog’s dinner with you to class. Pups tend to be most motivated to
learn when they have empty stomachs. Many dog trainers also recommend
using so-called high-value training treats—food that is especially aromatic and
tasty instead of mere kibble—along with his regular fare. Semi-moist food is
a much healthier option than some of the most common choices, foods like
sliced hot dogs and cubed cheese, and puppy owners find that it motivates
their pets just as well.

topic indicates that restricting protein in these animals may actually do more
harm than good.
The biggest disadvantage to feeding your puppy wet food is the negative
effect it will have on his teeth if you don’t brush them daily. Puppies can learn to
tolerate brushing impressively well when they are exposed to the task early and
often, but some owners find it difficult to stick to a daily schedule. An owner
feeding kibble may be able to get away with putting the task off for a while, but
those who feed wet food have no such leeway. If you suspect that you won’t be
diligent about tooth brushing, kibble may be a better choice for your pup.

Semi-moist food offers puppies a healthy compromise between kibble and cans.
If your pup doesn’t like dry food and you don’t want to feed him wet food, you
both may find semi-moist food to be an appealing option. Semi-moist food has
come a long way over the years. Instead of buying the artificially colored and
flavored faux hamburger patties that once cornered the semi-moist market, dog
owners can now choose between several high-quality brands from this evolving
medium. Some of the best semi-moist foods are packaged in rolls that look a bit
like salamis.
Beware of brands that contain high amounts of salt and sugar. These ingredients
tend to be more prevalent in semi-moist foods. Sodium is a necessary part
of a healthy canine diet, but your pup should be able to fulfill this nominal
requirement through the salt content of the other ingredients in his food—such
as meat and vegetables. In addition to being unhealthy for your pet, sugary food
is bad for your pet’s teeth. Just as you would when choosing a dry or wet dog
food formula, read labels when selecting a semi-moist brand. Ideally, salt and

Reading food labels and choosing a food with nutritious ingredients are excellent
ways to help ensure that your puppy is eating healthy. Still, many owners question
whether any prepackaged food can truly fulfill all a pup’s dietary needs. These
owners think the best way to make sure their pets are getting everything they
need—and no harmful additives—is by cooking their puppies’ meals personally.
Homecooked diets
Homecooked diets are becoming more and more popular among pet owners
are becoming

from foods that are rich in these nutrients. To compensate
for nutrients that are lost in the manufacturing process,
dog food companies often add supplemental forms of
these vitamins and minerals back into the food. Although
manufacturers insist that these additives are meant to fortify
food, nutritionists assert that many synthetic or imported
supplements actually detract from the nutritional qualities of
prepackaged food.
Although it may seem a bit inconvenient, cooking for
a puppy really doesn’t require a lot of extra effort on an
owner’s behalf. Your pup needs a higher percentage of
protein and fat in his diet than you do in yours, but he
can get these nutrients from many of the same foods that
you and the rest of your family eat—meat, chicken, fish,
vegetables, and whole grains. The greater effort involved
in homecooking is the research that must go into your
plan. Before you decide to feed your puppy homecooked

Miniature Schnauzer
By Tammy Gange
The Miniature Schnauzer, ranked #12 by the American Kennel
Club (AKC), has been one of the most popular dog breeds for
numerous years. He not only looks like a distinguished gentleman
but takes his role as his owner’s companion and protector very
seriously. Intelligent, loving, and playful, this charming breed is
everything that his larger cousins are but in a more economical

unprecedented affection and want nothing more than to spend
their days engaged in active pursuits together.

If you plan to use a grooming table for your pet, you can get him used to
standing on it by picking him up and placing him on it several times a day. If you
plan to show your pet in conformation, repeating this maneuver can also serve as
excellent practice for hand-stacking your pet, the technical term for placing him
in the stance he must assume when being judged up close.
Of all the commands owners teach their new puppies, stand is probably the
most overlooked. It can be difficult to teach some dogs this command, but if
you get your Miniature Schnauzer puppy used to standing for grooming now,
he will have an easier time integrating this command into his training down the
road. Never forget to lavish your puppy with praise and treats for his compliance.
Whether you are teaching formal commands or grooming tolerance, positive
reinforcement will encourage him to repeat the desired behavior.
Also look for foods containing lean meats.
You can find healthy formulas made from
everything from chicken to venison. On
dog food labels, ingredients must be listed
in descending order by weight, so the first
ingredient is the most prevalent. Many owners
insist that grain-free is the way to go; others
feel that providing some carbohydrates benefits
growing puppies. What matters most is that
the food you select contains more meats than
grains, or more protein than carbs.
Puppies have higher protein needs than
adult dogs. For this important reason, you
should provide your pet with a food made
specifically for puppies until he is fully grown.
Some Miniature Schnauzer pups reach their
adult height and weight by the age of six
months; others may take up to a year to fill
out completely. If you are in doubt as to
whether your dog is done growing, ask your
veterinarian.
Types of Foods
The number of high-quality dog food brands
available today is significantly higher than it was

just a decade ago. Although this fact may make
the decision of what to feed your pet more
complicated, the variety of foods dog owners
have to choose from is hardly a bad thing. If
the food your breeder was feeding your puppy
fits the criteria for a healthy food—and your
Miniature Schnauzer pup is thriving on it—it
may be best to stick with it. “If it ain’t broke,
don’t fix it,” as they say. If, on the other hand,
you think another food may be better, you have
plenty of healthy choices available to you.
Another decision you must make when
selecting a food for your new puppy is whether
to feed him kibble or canned food. Kibble is
by far the more popular choice among dog
owners, largely because of its convenience. It
is easy to feed, easy to store, and doesn’t put
your pet’s teeth on the fast track to developing
plaque and tartar. Canned food can be more
appealing to a finicky eater, however. Just be
sure that you make daily dental care a top
priority if going this wet food route. Semimoist food is a third choice, but you must
choose carefully. Many semi-moist foods are
loaded with sugar and preservatives to tempt a

picky eater, but they will do little for his wellbeing. Healthier versions of semi-moist puppy
foods are available, however; they come in rolls
that are packaged similar to salamis. The one
you purchase should be a puppy food formula.
Feeding Schedule for a Puppy
When you brought your Miniature Schnauzer
puppy home, you probably placed him on
a feeding schedule—and for good reason.
Puppies who eat at the same times each day
are easier to housetrain than pets that are freefed. Owners of pups who are fed on a schedule
are more in tune with their pets’ health. They
know when their pups have a loss of appetite,
a common sign of a health problem. They
also know exactly how much their pets are
eating because they typically measure servings
hen he was born, your Miniature
Schnauzer puppy depended on his
mother to feed him and groom
him. During this time his breeder made sure
that both mother and pups were healthy and
had everything else they needed. Now these
important tasks fall to you. Eating nutritious
food will help your puppy grow into a healthy
adult. Staying clean will make him feel good.
Brushing him and bathing him regularly
will help him get used to being groomed.
Grooming your pup will also help you identify
certain health problems before they become
more serious issues. Your veterinarian will be
on the lookout for threats to your new pet’s
health too, so taking him to the vet for routine
care is essential.
instead of topping off a dish each day. Free-fed
puppies, meaning pups who are allowed to
eat as much as they want whenever they want,
are more likely to overeat. This habit leads to
obesity over time. Continuing to schedule-feed
your puppy even after he has settled into your
home is a smart idea for everyone involved for
these reasons.
An eight-week-old Miniature Schnauzer
puppy needs to eat at least three times a day.
Most owners opt to align these feedings with
their own mealtimes for the sake of simplicity.
If your puppy develops a habit of begging at
the table, though, start feeding him slightly
before the rest of the family eats to discourage
this unpleasant behavior.

What to feed Your Miniature
Schnauzer puppy
Selecting a quality food brand for your new
puppy may seem like an overwhelming task.
Just a quick stroll through your local pet supply
store will yield numerous possibilities. Which
brand is best? Should you buy him kibble or
canned food? What about grain-free formulas?
It would be a lot easier if there were one
universal answer for each of these questions,
but the truth is that which food is the best
one for your dog may be completely different
from what’s best for another puppy or even for
another Miniature Schnauzer pup.
Food Ingredients
Begin by ruling out any food that contains
by-products or chemical preservatives. Byproducts are the parts of an animal deemed
unfit for human consumption. Many pet food
manufacturers, surprisingly even some of the
ones with better reputations, use these cheap
ingredients to keep their protein levels high
and their costs low. Chemical preservatives like
BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin give food a longer
shelf life, but all three have been shown to
cause health problems in dogs. Tocopherols are
vitamin-based preservatives that pose no such
risks for your puppy’s well-being.

By Elaine Waldorf Gewirtz
Ranked #28 by the American Kennel Club (AKC), the heavyboned, powerful Mastiff is a vision of dignity and grandeur. This
breed is a gentle giant who has been bred not only for size but
for courage and docility. Aristocratic, intelligent, and emotional,
his loyalty to his family is undeniable. He loves attention from his
owners and definitely has a way about him that lets everyone know

that says, “I’ve got it covered,” all in the
same day. A well-trained and stable Mastiff
serves as an excellent ambassador of the
breed. Extremely intelligent and intensely
emotional, they often cajole their families
into doing whatever it is they want.
With a soft interior, they often push the
limits during training and will remember
harsh interactions. Like many breeds,
they don’t do well with harsh corrections.
With an inexperienced dog owner, the
Mastiff will often take advantage of most
situations.
Companionability
Friendly and outgoing, Mastiffs crave
attention from their owners. Once they do
something that amuses the family, they’ll
repeat it. Count on a Mastiff to demand
petting. Breeder Pat Flanagan Borracci
says, “I have a male who, whenever I sit
on the couch, he stands in front of me,
climbs up on one foreleg on each side of
my body, and pins me down. He proceeds
to lick my whole face and nibbles on my
chin. If I laugh, this encourages him to
keep on going.”
The Drool Factor
Do you think you can live with drool?
This breed’s large mouth and lower lip
produce saliva—lots of saliva. While all
dogs drool and pant when they’re about
to eat or become excited, Mastiffs are
droolers extraordinaire.
Adding to the moisture quotient is the
way they drink water. Some Mastiffs put
their faces in the water dish while they
drink, then walk away and dribble water as
they go. When they shake their heads, they
fling drool onto walls and ceiling. Here’s
where keeping drool rags and paper towels
in every room come in handy
If a breeder promises you that her puppies
do not drool as much as other Mastiffs,
don’t believe her. It’s simply not true.
Oh, and expect lots of “zzz” sounds from
this breed—Mastiffs snore, too!
Environment
A Mastiff doesn’t need a country manor
with acres of land to maintain his cheerful
outlook on life. Then again, what dog
wouldn’t love to spend his days exploring
the great outdoors alongside you and
sharing your bed come nighttime?
A home with a fenced yard is ideal,
although he can manage with less room.

Why Dogs Do What They Do
Chapter 1
Our Relationship With Dogs
Throughout history, humans and
dogs have had a
complex relation ship. Scientif ically,
a relation ship
that benefits both species is called
mutualism. In the
case of dogs and people, we feed
them and love them,
and in return they provide us with
emotional support ,
hunting and herding assistance,
and more. But it’s
always been more complic ated than
that. At various
times in our history, dogs have been
our rivals, our
enemie s, our victims, our propert
y, and our best
friends. They capture criminals,
locate lost people, and
sniff out bombs, tumors, bedbug
s, and drugs. They
befriend folks in nursing homes,
allow blind people to
become more independent, and help
kids learn to read.
There are hundred s of instanc es
every year in which a
selfless hero dog saves a human
life, often at the cost
of his own.
12
My Dog is Driving Me Crazy
his Bulldog Killys jumped in and knocked it into gear. The truck started moving and ran over
his owner, fortunately without producing life-threatening injuries. In 2008, a 70-pound (32-kg)
pit bull in Oklahoma managed to drive his owner’s car away from a car wash while the man
was diligently scrubbing the hood. In 2007, a black Labrador Retriever named Charlie drove his
owner’s car into a river. It’s not just in the United States, either. A New Zealand dog drove the
family car through a cafe window. Nor do dogs confine their deadly efforts to autos. In September
2010, a Florida man named James Land was pitched out of his boat. While he clung patiently to a
buoy waiting for help, his enterprising fellow passenger, a Jack Russell Terrier named Lucy, drove
off with the boat to Pompano Beach and made a safe landing. Land was forced to swim a mile
(1.5 km) back to shore. He claimed to be delighted to be reunited with the dog who heartlessly
abandoned him to the waves.
More disturbingly, according to the National Fire Protection Association, dogs accidentally
start about 1,000 house fires every year—knocking over candles and the like. In 2009, a dog
named Alfie turned on the griddle attachment to the stove and toasted the entire kitchen. Alfie
was sorry afterward.
Humans and their dogs enjoy a
relationship called “mutualism,”
one that benefits both species.
N
ot that it always works out that way, of course. In reality, you’re more likely to be bitten by
a dog than rescued by one. In the United States, every day, about 1,000 people are treated in
emergency rooms for dog bites. Most of the victims are children, half of whom are bitten in
the face. Dog bite losses exceed $1 billion per year, with over $300 million paid by homeowners’
insurance. And in 2010, there were 34 fatal dog attacks. But people seem to be more afraid of
sharks and falling meteors. Resourceful as they are, killer dogs have gone far beyond the oldfashioned bite in their efforts to get rid of us. Dogs take advantage of modern technology. In 2008,
a three-year-old yellow Labrador Retriever in Oregon shot his owner in the leg with a shotgun
while they were out duck hunting. He also put a few holes in the boat. A Great Dane in Memphis
shot his owner in the back by knocking a pistol off a coffee table and causing it to discharge. Dogs
were also blamed on two different occasions (one in Florida and one in California) by husbands
who declared that the household pet somehow managed to acquire a handgun and kill their wives.
Nor do dogs stop at firearms violations. Vehicular attempted homicide is becoming a favored
modus operandi. Every once in a while, for example, dogs get behind the wheel of a car and
somehow manage to shift from neutral into drive (presumably by accident, but you never know)
and terrorize the neighborhood. In 2010, a Florida man was checking under the hood of his
5,000-pound (2,268-kg) Ford F-150 truck, which was parked in neutral with the engine on, when

useful skill.” In addition, dogs
who are actively worked—that is,
given jobs to do and problems to solve—grow new connections in their brains and systematically
become even more intelligent.
Dogs are not simply intellectually smart, however. They are also emotional, which requires a
separate but equally important kind of intelligence. Scientists now acknowledge what dog lovers
have always known: Dogs experience a wide range of “human” feelings: love, jealousy, pride,
pique, boredom, and worry.
Even their outlook on life seems as variable as their owners’. Michael Mendl, head of the Animal
Welfare and Behavior research group at Bristol University’s School of Clinical Veterinary Science,
headed a 2010 project in which 24 male and female dogs of different ages were tested for, of all
things, optimism. In the first test, each dog was taken to a room where a researcher interacted
positively with him for 20 minutes. The next day, the researcher did the same thing but left
after only five minutes. Some dogs happily awaited the person’s return, while others barked and

became anxious. Anxious dogs were labeled pessimists. Next, the researchers trained the dogs to
understand that a bowl on one side of a room was full of delicious food, while a bowl on the other
side was empty. The researchers then placed bowls at ambiguous places and observed how quickly
the dogs would go to the bowls. “Dogs who ran fast to these ambiguous locations, as if expecting
the positive food reward, were classed as making relatively optimistic decisions,” announced
Mendl. “Interestingly, these dogs tended to be the ones who also showed the least anxiety-like
behavior when left alone for a short time.” I leave it to the reader to determine the scientific value
of these studies.
Our emotional Connection
Despite our occasional difficulties with the canine species (which, after all, are molehills compared
to the mountains of grief our fellow human beings cause us), dogs remain our best friends,
playmates, therapists, and buffers against loneliness and sorrow. They are more important to our
lives than ever, no longer as employees or servants but as friends and family. And the farther we
humans get from nature and the farther dogs get from wolves, the closer we get to each other.
A 2010 survey conducted by Kelton Research, a marketing research company, found that
74 percent of the 1,001 dog owners polled believe that their dog’s body language or facial
expressions let them know how their pet is feeling. Seventy percent said that they have “shared
a look” with their dog on at least one occasion. Nearly half reported that they know what their

Training Basics
This chapter will be the basis for all training in this
book. Understanding the basic concepts of operant
conditioning is important to having consistent
success training and to relationship building with
your parrot. You do not have to understand these
terms well enough to have a degree in psychology,
but if you comprehend them well enough to apply
them they will quickly make more sense to you.
Like any skill, some people seem to have a natural
rhythm for understanding how to cue, mark and
event, reward and shape behavior. Others of us do
not, but all of us can practice and get better. So start
practicing with positive reinforcement!

into the crate, the towel disappears. The parrot will go in
to avoid this stimulus, but you’ve probably eroded your
relationship. It is also easy to overdo negative reinforcement
and cause big problems. Aggression, escape behaviors, a
lack of engagement and fear behaviors can be created with
the use of negative reinforcement.
There are instances when negative reinforcement works
and has little repercussion. All the same, an animal will only
do the bare minimum necessary to make whatever is being
presented that she dislikes go away. In comparison, if you
train with positive reinforcement instead, the bird will go in
the crate just because she has a history of being rewarded
for doing so. And if there is no treat, she may be puzzled,
but then offer another behavior, perhaps walk further in
or come back out and go back in again trying to elicit the
treat. The potential for a reward creates enthusiasm and
encourages creativity.
Positive reinforcement is the presentation of a stimulus following a behavior that
serves to maintain or increase the frequency of the behavior. It is training through
rewards. Giving the reward increases the likelihood the subject will perform the
desired behavior. Positive reinforcers are usually something the learner finds
enjoyable and pleasant; in parrots, a small piece of food is the usual reinforcer.
When using positive reinforcement in training the learner tends to exceed the
effort necessary to obtain the award. The best way to train a parrot is through
positive reinforcement. Certainly, all means of training even punishment can work.
They just don’t work as well and are not as fun.
Karen Pryor in her landmark book, Don’t Shoot the Dog notes that an
interesting thing happened when trainers across continents and training different
species began to use positive reinforcement as a sole means of shaping behavior.
Everything from bears to horses to fish has demonstrated intelligence, enthusiasm
and curiosity in their training sessions when positive reinforcement was used.
It turned out dolphins, which had been trained with positive reinforcement for
decades weren’t the only playful intelligent animals. All animals exhibit more
creativity and interest when they have the opportunity to puzzle out what they are
being asked to do and anticipating something good at the finish line.
Punishment
Negative Reinforcement
Punishment is the presentation of an aversive stimulus or removal of a positive
reinforcer that serves to reduce the frequency of a behavior. Punishment can be
things like flicking a bird’s beak, shaking its cage, dropping it to the floor, or even
blowing in its face. It is something that is done to the bird that the bird dislikes
and will seek to avoid through other behaviors. Punishment can sometimes stop
undesirable behaviors, but often at the cost of a good relationship.
Punishment is tricky because in order for it to be understood, it has to happen
at the exact moment the undesirable behavior is occurring. Let’s say your parrot is
screaming and you walk into the room to go shake her cage. You enter to room so
she stops screaming. Now shaking the cage is the result of her sitting quietly. Your
bird will be confused and may become distrustful. The other thing that is tricky
is that because dogs and people understand when we yell “no” or give them a
dirty look, we think that this will work with our birds. However, you have actually
taught your dog that “no” means a swat is coming and that a dirty look may mean

she is about to be put outside. Without pairing this with punishment and timing it
correctly it is not going to work.
So perhaps the biggest danger of punishment is that if you do not use it
precisely, you create fear, aggression and avoidance behavior in your parrot. Why
risk it? If you make a mistake using positive reinforcement, your parrot may get a
bit frustrated but she is not going to distrust you and fear you. You can’t lose using
positive reinforcement.
Time Out
The only punishment that is important to have in your training arsenal is the
removal of positive reinforcement. This is a “time out”, but it isn’t quite the same
as the time out we use with our kids. You don’t have to put your parrot back in
her cage for 20 minutes. All you have to do is turn your back, walk away or stop
scratching her head for a few seconds. When I am training a parrot and it lunges at
me, I put my treat hand down and look away. When the bird is no longer exhibiting
aggressive behavior, I make eye contact and bring my hand back up. If your time
out happens in conjunction with the lunge, it is a clear communication that this
behavior removes the opportunity to get a treat. If the parrot wants a treat, over
time (sometimes in just one training session) it will stop presenting the unwanted
behavior.
With the exception of time outs, positive reinforcement can always be used
more effectively with a parrot than punishment or negative reinforcement.

behavior to repeat, you have to reward it. If you never act excited or pleased when
your husband brings you flowers, he will stop bringing you flowers. Certainly he
bought them imagining your smile and how happy you would be with him. He was
hoping for positive reinforcement. If he never gets it, he will quit trying with this
behavior. The same is true of parrot behavior. If your parrot never gets anyone’s
attention or any kind of reaction when he calls out “hello” he will stop saying it
eventually. What’s the point, if no one in your flock is going to play along? If you
want your parrot to do something you have to make sure there is a reward for it.
It is important however, to understand that reinforcing a behavior is much more
precise than simply rewarding. In order for reinforcement to work it has to be
connected to the behavior. Your parrot steps up on your hand, she immediately
gets a treat. In the bird’s mind, stepping up equals a reward. The only way you
can make an animal understand what it is being rewarded for is to have the
reinforcement simultaneously with the behavior. You can also mark the event and

By Rebecca K. O’Connor
A properly trained parrot is a wonderful pet—and a poorly
trained parrot can be a feathered monster. This book gives parrot
parents the tools to help ensure that their birds become social,
tame, and fun companions. Advocating only positive, humane
methods, the author guides the reader through the basics of
training—including terminology and various techniques—and
progresses to more advanced tasks, such as trick training, training
a flighted parrot, and training a parrot to talk. Using the methods
in this book, readers can prevent the development of most
problem behaviors before they start and solve those that do. The
author addresses many more topics bird parents will find useful,
including behavioral enrichment and training a parrot to tolerate—
or even participate in—nail trimming, wing clipping, wearing a
harness, and riding in a carrier. The Perfectly Trained Parrot is a
comprehensive resource for forging a strong and loving bond with a
well-behaved parrot.

An Introduction to
Aquariums
You’ve seen beautiful aquariums in people’s
homes, pet stores, office lobbies, or restaurants
and now you want to have one of your own.
The aquarium hobby will provide you and your
family with hours of fascination and relaxation.
Before you start, you may need to go “back to

14
Why Aquariums as a Hobby?
Keeping fish in aquariums has proven
to be incredibly popular with people
for over 150 years. Goldfish were even
kept in bowls long before that time in
Asia. People keep living fish in their
homes for a variety of reasons: as
“living decoration,” for their children’s
education, for their own amusement,
to collect rare specimens, or to raise
fish to sell to others. One study at
Purdue University showed that elderly
people in a nursing home with an
aquarium had lower stress and were
generally happier than they would
otherwise have been. Many dentist
and doctor’s offices have aquariums
in their waiting rooms. These tanks
have been shown to distract and
sooth people who might otherwise be
stressed about their visit.
A Fascination for Fish
I don’t really remember my first aquarium. I was told by my parents that a
neighbor gave me two goldfish in a bowl when I was three years old. At the time,
I was much more interested in dinosaurs than fish. When I later learned what
extinct meant, and that I would never, ever see a live dinosaur, I became focused
on aquariums instead. My first real aquarium was a 10-gallon metal framed
freshwater aquarium that sat on our kitchen counter. My job was to feed the fish
and change the water when needed. My father would take me to pet stores on the
weekends so that I could pick out new fish for the tank. I received a 15-gallon
marine (saltwater) aquarium as a birthday gift when I was in the third grade. I
recall that my first animal for that tank was a small brown starfish. From that
point on, I was truly hooked and have worked with aquariums all of my life.
Aquariums can be a life-long career, a passing fad, or anything in between.
Hopefully you’ll find the information in this book helpful in reaching your goal in
the fascinating hobby of home aquariums.
The aquarium hobby is an
entertaining and relaxing pastime
for the entire family. Aquariums are
fun to watch, just like television. The
fish are beautiful, and aquariums can
resemble artwork. Tanks can also
be interactive; like video games. But
aquariums are really different because
they contain living animals that are
unpredictable. Aquariums teach
people the responsibility of caring
for a pet. The animals in an aquarium
can show you things about their
habits that you would otherwise not
be able to see unless you went scuba
diving underwater. Aquariums are
also challenging; you’ll have to design
a life support system, your fish may
develop a disease, or you may need to
figure out how to best feed a particular
animal.
There are three important virtues
found in all successful aquarium
hobbyists. The first is patience.
Rushing into the purchase of a new
fish, or adding fish to an aquarium
too soon is a sure road to disaster.
Common sense is also important. For
instance, if something about a fish
doesn’t look right to you, don’t ignore
it. Stop and think what could be
wrong and how serious the problem
might be. Chances are, if there is a
serious problem, it can be corrected
by prompt action on your part. Finally,
perseverance is also essential. Every
aquarium hobbyist loses a fish from
time to time. You must learn from
your mistakes, and with time, your
losses will become minimal. The
aquarium hobby will then become a
more pleasant experience that you can
devote as
much, or as
little time to
as you decide.
Home aquariums come
in all different shapes and
sizes; from tiny ½-gallon (2
Liter) bowls to 300-gallon
(1135 L) monsters.
25
Aquariums – Past, Present and
Future (Oh No, A History Lesson?)
Remember, “Those who ignore the
past are doomed to repeat it.” You
don’t want to re-learn the solutions
to aquarium problems that people
before you have already figured out
years before. With that in mind, you
should take a few minutes to study this
history of aquariums and to see where
the future may lie.
The Past
People actually began keeping fish
in captivity as a way to keep their
food fresh. Long before the days of
refrigerators, food would often spoil.
Keeping fish alive in ponds and tanks
allowed ancient people to have fresh
fish to eat throughout the year. It is
thought that over 1000 years ago in
China, some of these fish that were
kept for food had brighter colors than
the rest of the fish. The people noticed

addition, all aquariums need some

animals alive, like a spaceship has for

Cockatoos
By Carol Frischmann
Cockatoos are big beautiful birds famous for being the
“snuggle-bunnies” of the parrot family—most love to be cuddled
by the members of their human flock. Like other parrots,
cockatoos are intelligent and social pets. They can be affectionate,
loyal companions, but when not properly trained and socialized,
they can develop a number of problem behaviors. Written by an
expert on bird care, this in-depth guide discusses 11 species of
cockatoos that are commonly available; it touches on some of the
other species as well. Essential topics like proper socialization,
solving problem behaviors, nutrition, cages and other equipment,
and health care receive detailed coverage. The author advocates
positive training and the formation of a deep parrot-human bond.

Just as your well-being,
happiness, and long life depend
on good nutrition, so does your
cockatoo’s. The quality of his
feathers, his ability to stay healthy,
and much about his temperament,
including his zest for life, come from
being properly nourished.
Selecting items to eat and
experiencing food’s texture and color
consume most of a wild bird’s day.
For your pet, please provide choice
and variety to add interest as well as
nutrition to your pet’s daily activities.
It is vital to assure your cockatoo’s
nutritional needs are met, as well as
your bird’s food-related behavior
needs. With more than 10 million
companion birds in the United States,
avian veterinarians and nutritionists
have worked hard to learn more about
avian diets and their links to physical
and mental health. As a result of these
studies, many professional keepers and
veterinarians suggest a dietary strategy
Husbandry tip:
Good breeders will have cockatoo
youngsters accustomed to eating
pellets. If you acquire an older bird that
is not accustomed to eating pellets,
the transition from a less appropriate
diet to one that includes pellets takes
patience and “stealth.” Guidelines for

relying on pelleted diets for at least
60% of a bird’s nutrition and fresh
foods for the remaining portion.
If this sounds at odds with what
your grandmother taught you about
feeding birds, that’s natural. In past
times, pet bird owners purchased a bag
of seed, a cuttlebone, and a mineral
block. In the last 20 years, researchers
have investigated the specific needs
of different companion bird species,
rather than limiting avian nutrition
research to chickens and ducks.
University researchers and pet supply
manufacturers combed the literature
and sponsored research to determine
what dietary components keep different
companion bird species healthy.
Because of this, our understanding of
ideal diets for each bird species diet is
improving.
As a result, we know that seed-based
diets limit companion birds to one-fifth
of their natural lifespan. Veterinarians
say that poor nutrition continues to
cause most companion bird health
problems. Companions often overfeed
their birds; but—face it—many birds
prefer eating seed to all other foods.
And, companions trying to please
their birds give it to them, resulting in
overweight and undernourished birds.
A diet of preferred foods does not work
well as a basis for a healthy body and
mind for birds any better than it does
for people.
Components of good nutrition
Cockatoos require a mixture of
proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins,

and minerals. The trick is to
provide the right variety of
healthy food that your bird
is eager to eat. Most experts
agree that the essential
nutrition for a companion
bird comes from clean,
fresh water; a basic diet of
high quality pellets; and
daily addition of fresh fruits,
vegetables, protein, and small
amounts of seed.
The role of water
A bird’s body is
approximately 80% water.
Water is the lubrication
for your cockatoo’s entire
system. Without it, he can’t
produce energy, move
nutrients around his body, or
regulate his temperature.
Although you may not see
your bird drinking, he does so
several times each day. Most
birds drink in the morning
and again at night before sleep. Clean,
fresh drinking water should be available
to your bird at all times.
A bird the size of a cockatiel drinks
4-15 ml water/day (up to 3 teaspoons).
Larger birds may drink 30 ml/day. (7
teaspoons) An increase in exercise or
room temperature will prompt your
cockatoo to drink more water.
If you use a water bottle, mark the
water level when you change the
water each morning. At night, you’ll
see how much your bird has drunk
during the day.

Pelleted diets
High-quality pellets ensure a proper
base of nutrition including all the
nutrients he needs, eliminating much
of the difficulty in providing a proper
diet. The pellet form also answers the
problem of your bird picking through
the food, selecting only those bits he
wants. If your cockatoo eats a good
quality pelleted diet each morning, you
