Von allen europäischen Hauptstädten ist Athen die mit
Abstand älteste: Wie Ausgrabungen beweisen, existierte
schon vor etwa 3500 Jahren ein Herrscherpalast auf dem
von Mauern umgebenen Felsplateau der Akropolis. 1896
fanden hier die ersten Olympischen Spiele der Neuzeit
statt, 1906 eine Zwischenolympiade – und 2004 erneut
Sommerspiele.
Die Stadt zählt heute 664 000 Einwohner, doch im urbanen Ballungsraum im Nordwesten der Halbinsel Attika leben 3,7 Millionen Menschen. Er umfasst auch die Hafenstadt Piräus – aufgrund des intensiven Fährverkehrs
zu den griechischen Inseln der grösste Passagierhafen
Europas. Das Klima Athens ist wegen seiner Lage in einem nur nach Süden offenen Talkessel selbst für mediterrane Verhältnisse mild, auch im November liegen die
Temperaturen oft noch über 20 Grad. Die wichtigsten historischen Sehenswürdigkeiten liegen im Umkreis von
nur etwa einem Kilometer um die Akropolis. Das alte wie
das neue Athen erkundet man deshalb am besten zu Fuss.
Of all the capital cities in Europe, Athens is by far the oldest.
Excavations have shown that a ruler’s palace existed on the
rocky walled outcrop of the Acropolis some 3,500 years ago.
The first Olympic Games of modern times were held there
in 1896; these were followed by the intercalated games of
1906 and then by the Summer Olympics of 2004.
Today, the city has a population of 664,000, although the
urban agglomeration which spreads across the north-west
of the Attic peninsula is home to 3.7 million people. It also
includes the port of Piraeus, whose heavy ferry traffic to the
Greek islands makes it the largest passenger port in Europe.
Its location in a valley basin that opens to the south gives
Athens a climate which is mild even by Mediterranean
standards, with temperatures frequently exceeding 20 degrees as late as November. The most important historical
sites all lie within a radius of one kilometre or so of the
Acropolis, thus ensuring that both ancient and modern
­Athens are best explored on foot.

This tower-like minihotel in
the city centre is virtually
swamped with violet bougainvillea, giving it a romantic air that
is heightened further by the
vista of the cathedral and the
Acro­polis from the balconies of
its neat l­ ittle rooms. The lift
and staircase, however, are so
narrow that larger guests might
well feel a t­ rifle cramped.

­portions are as overwhelming
as is the good humour with
which the proprietor receives

One of the few surviving oldstyle confectionery stores in the
capital. It produces delicious

Platz zur Präsentation originaler Kunstschätze der Akropolis.
This glass and concrete masterpiece by Swiss architect
Bernard Tschumi was opened in
2007. On the one hand, it affords
intriguing views of the archaeological excavations underneath
it, while on the other it contains
a wealth of exhibition space
inside for displaying original art
treasures from the Acropolis
together with a second Parthenon
constructed to the same dimensions as the original.

With its instructive displays,
this outstanding private collection does more than just showcase a cross-section through
Greek and Cypriot art and everyday objects from antiquity. It is
particularly fascinating to see
how figures created by an early
Cycladic island culture 4,000 to
5,000 years ago could quite easily
pass for contemporary art.

ancient Villa Ilissia, this modern
museum is devoted primarily to
the Byzantine era, which saw the
third flowering of Greek culture,
after the classical and Roman
periods. The oldest treasures
from the early Christian epoch
date back to the third century.

on foot through the noisy narrow
streets are unavoidable. But an
oasis of peace awaits in the midst
of the city’s tumult: palm trees
and exotic plants ensure that this
park provides visitors with some
welcome southern tranquillity.
