“The little woodland gnomes” is what the two sets of seven dwarves call themselves. The Bamberg forest kindergarten offers life that takes place almost exclusively in the forest. The hut and the caravan are only for snacks, drawing and painting, or for when it’s raining. The rest is all forest. AT H O M E I N T H E O U T D O O R S : O P E N TO E V E RYO N E As we all know, Bavaria is a little different. The Free State has its own constitution – and, with Article 141, even includes its own “Mushroom Clause”: Everyone should have the right “to enjoy the beauty of nature” and “acquire wild fruits of the forest”. We have a social duty to shape the forest in such a way that hikers, cyclists or mushroom hunters can also use it actively. It is a pleasure for us to do so. “The little woodland gnomes” is what the two sets of seven dwarves call themselves. Today, the tree stands proudly on the slope – and is an amazing piece of history. Completely new sounds were to be heard in the forest near Kelheim on lots of small stages in the middle of the forest at the first music festival held by the Bavarian State Forest Enterprise. The programme was organised by the Bavarian jazz institute in Regensburg, and more than 1500 people came to listen – despite the bad weather. Today’s reservoir is almost 11 hectares large, lies in a nature reserve in the Fichtelgebirge and is used as a natural outdoor pool for swimming, boating and walking. THE OCEAN OF UPPER FRANCONIA SCHÖNRAIN RUINS The centuries whistle through all the cracks in this thousand-year old monastery in Spessart. Monks, pillages, lootings, a knight who took his “shield and helmet with him to the grave”: Here you can meet the ghosts of the past. Or you can search for the passageways which have still not been found – and which supposedly exist. One of them is even said to lead all the way down to the river Main.
