Prinz William und die bürgerliche Kate Middleton haben Einzelheiten zu ihrer Trauung

Trauung in der Westminster Abbey im Herzen Londons am 29. April sollen die
Frischvermählten in einer Kutsche durch das Londoner Regierungsviertel und über die
Prachtstraße "The Mall" zum Buckingham Palast fahren. So lauten die am Mittwoch vom
britischen Königshaus veröffentlichten Pläne für das Großereignis. Damit können die
Zehntausende erwarteten Besucher vor Ort ihr Traumpaar aus der Nähe sehen und ihm
zujubeln. Nach der Fahrt in der Kutsche, die nach Berichten des Senders BBC verglast sein
soll, wird im Buckingham Palast gefeiert. Außerdem wurde ein Konzert im Hyde Park
angekündigt.
Am Morgen ihres Hochzeitstages muss Kate denselben Weg vom Buckingham Palast durch
die Stadt zur Kirche allerdings noch allein antreten. Sie soll den offiziellen Angaben zufolge
mit dem Auto gefahren werden - ein echter Traditionsbruch, denn bei früheren Hochzeiten
wurde die Braut häufig in einer Glaskutsche gefahren. Royal-Experten meinen, mit dem
Schritt wolle das Königshaus erreichen, dass die Hochzeit in wirtschaftlich schwierigen
Zeiten nicht allzu ausschweifend wirkt.
Die Nachricht von den Hochzeitsplänen des Zweiten der britischen Thronfolge hatte im
November weltweit Begeisterung ausgelöst.

B. Physik des guten Wetters
Michael Beard ist Nobelpreisträger für Physik und eine ziemlich fiese Ratte. Aussehen tut er
allerdings wie ein Mops. Dem Leser gefällt so etwas. Ein Nobelpreisträger, vor dem man
keine Hochachtung haben muss, das liest man gern.
Michael Beard hat, als wir ihn das erste Mal in Ian McEwans neuem Roman „Solar“ treffen,
das Schönste wohl hinter sich. Da ist er 53, und das 20. Jahrhundert neigt sich dem Ende zu.
Die Menschheit geht mit schlechten Aussichten ins neue Jahrtausend; ihr wird zu warm der
schädlichen Abgase wegen. Von allem ist zu viel vorhanden, das Wachstum wächst sich
nachteilig aus. Auch Michael Beard wächst, er hat mindestens 15 Kilo Wabbelspeck zu viel.
Und es kommt immer mehr dazu. […]

schließlich unser Überleben ab. […]
Es braucht keine guten Menschen, um die Welt zu retten. Im Gegenteil. Der Klimakatastrophe
entrinnen wir nur, wenn mit Klimaschutz Geld und Ruhm zu machen ist und weiterhin
Bequemlichkeit garantiert werden kann.

A. Kate und William plan/planning magnificent coach ride
Prince William and the commoner/non-aristocratic Kate Middleton
have released details of their wedding. They want to share their
happiness with as many people as possible. After the ceremony in
Westminster Abbey in the heart of London on 29 April, the
newlyweds are to ride in a coach through Whitehall/ through the
London government district and down the grand boulevard of The
Mall to Buckingham Palace. These plans for the big event were
announced by the Royal Family on Wednesday. They mean that the
tens of thousands of expected visitors can see their dream couple close
up/at close quarters and cheer them. After the ride in the coach, which
according to the BBC is to be made of glass, there will be a
party/celebration in Buckingham Palace. A concert in Hyde Park was
also announced.
On the morning of her wedding day, however/though, Kate has to
travel the same route from Buckingham Palace through the city to the
church on her own. According to the official announcement, she is to
be driven in a car – a real break with tradition, because in earlier
weddings the bride often used to be driven in a glass carriage.
Royalty/Royal experts think/believe this move indicates that the Royal
Family does/do not want the wedding to seem too extravagant/lavish
in economically difficult times.
The news of the wedding plans of the second in line to the British
throne in November was met with enthusiasm all over the world.
A. Physics of good weather
Michael Beard is a Nobel L/laureate for physics and quite a nasty
piece of work / a pretty mean rat. Mind you, he looks like a pug/ a fat
little dog. Readers like this kind of thing. A Nobel Laureate we don’t
need to/have to respect, that makes for enjoyable reading/ that’s
something we like to read about.
When we meet him for the first time in Ian McEwan’s new novel
Solar, Michael Beard’s best days are probably behind him. He is 53
and
the
20th
century
is
coming
to
an
end/a
close.
Humanity/Humankind is entering the new millennium with poor
prospects, feeling too warm because of the toxic emissions. There is
too much of everything, growth is growing disadvantageous. Michael
Beard is growing, too; he has at least 15 kilos of wobbly fat too much.
And it keeps increasing. […]
In this respect, the book is an academic novel. These books always
thrive on the discrepancy between the status of their characters and
their inability to master life. But McEwan is concerned with more than
that. After all, our survival depends on the kind of research Beard is
doing.
Good people are not what is needed to save the world. On the
contrary. We can only escape the climate catastrophe if climate
protection can be a source of money and fame, and if our comfort can
still be guaranteed.
