Last fall, NSJC applied to be part of an exciting project,
sponsored by the Jewish Education Project and Keshet,
to create LGBTQ inclusion in synagogues and Jewish
organizations on Long Island, NYC and Westchester.
NSJC is proud to announce that we were one of nine
synagogues/organizations accepted into this program
G (only two other synagogues on Long Island were
r selected!) We are in very good company - METNY/
o USY, the American Jewish Society for Service and
u Young Judea were also selected to participate.
p
We are making a very important commitment, not
only as a synagogue, but as individuals, families and as
S
c part of the larger Jewish community.
Our members will be working closely with Keshet and
o
the
Jewish Education Project throughout the coming
o
p year to create awareness and to educate ourselves, to
ensure that we make NSJC an open, safe, and inclusive
place for all.
Rabbi Benson, Amy Gironda, Louva Roberts and myself will
lead this project, but four people, no matter how committed,
cannot truly change a culture. There is a lot of exciting work to
be done and we invite everyone (youth, parents, entire families!)
to take a more active and hands-on role in this process. Keshet
envisions a Jewish world in which LGBTQ Jews are not merely
tolerated or accepted; Keshet envisions communities where the
ethos of justice, caring, and inclusion that encapsulates the best
of Jewish tradition is seen and felt by all Jews.
We held a kick-off program in April, viewed the documentary
“Hineini: Coming Out In a Jewish High School” followed by a
thoughtful and interactive discussion.
If you have any questions, would like to discuss any part
of our project with me or are interested in how you can take a
more active role in this process, please just let me know.
Join us in making this vision a reality.

to strengthen Jewish life in Suffolk County.
Comprised of over 20 local Jewish groups from synagogues
to Touro Law School to JWOW and the YJCC, ELIJA seeks
to publicize the events of Jewish interest taking place in the
area, offer community-wide programing and build meaningful
connections and opportunities for partnership between the
constituent organizations.

“Praise the LORD, Praise the LORD, O my soul. I will praise the
LORD as long as I live; I will sing to my God as long as I exist.”
Psalm 146
These words, one of my favorite lines from the Psalms, are
cause for reflection as we come toward the end of our Team
Melachim year. They remind me that helping others is among
the most important ways that I “praise the Lord” and “sing to
my God.” I have been very moved and touched during the year
upon hearing about the different ways individuals or groups
within the synagogue took this idea I presented on the High
Holy Days and made it their own. On behalf of Sisterhood,
Lauren Schoenfeld coordinated a Team Melachim Toy Drive
in December, with collected gifts going to support a
local CHI (Community Housing Innovations) project and
NSJC families. On December 18 th, Lois Levine and her
Marilyn Reichler Nursery School pre-K students used
their tzedakah money to purchase toys and clothing for
children. Congregants have posted details of their efforts
on a signboard outside the coatroom - check out their range
of mitzvot! In what ways have you been inspired by this
community project? Did you participate? Was it easy or
hard to find an extra good deed to perform on the 18th of
every month? Is this something you can continue to do?
Going forward next year, I hope we will find other ways
to “do good” as a community. I have some thoughts but I
would love to hear more about your experiences and your
ideas for the future.
In the meantime, just because things at NSJC may quiet
down a little over the summer, it doesn’t mean Team
Malachim retires. Keep up the good work!

President’s Welcome
Andy Polan, NSJC President
It is hard to believe that almost a year has passed since I
became president of our congregation. Last July, I could not
have predicted just how rewarding an experience it would
be to serve as the leader of a congregation that has a deeply
caring neshama, soul.
The support I’ve received and continue to receive, from
my family at home and my home away from home, my NSJC
family, is an unending source of strength as I do my level best
to deal with the issues at hand on a day to day basis and at
the same time look towards the future of our congregation,
insuring it’s place God willing for many many years to come.
What have I learned in 11 months? I have learned not to be
shy; if I need something I ask, and the NSJC magic does the
rest. Our auxiliaries are always the first to offer leadership
assistance, to help organize and execute the many activities
that occur throughout the year inside and sometimes outside
these walls. Here’s just a taste of the things we enjoyed and/
or accomplished together: Comedy Night, Art Auction and for
balance a road trip to West Meadow Beach to say tashlich
together, as well as our annual visit to Pilgrim State Hospital
Cemetery to say Kaddish.
A special thank you goes to our professional and office
staff for dealing with me on a daily basis, answering endless
questions and offering guidance, and in general just having
my back. To say I couldn’t do it without all of you is truly an
understatement.
Most of all, I wish a hearty todah rabah to all of our volunteers
who bring our plans to reality. You are the true foundation of
our community.

Marcie Platkin Receives FSA Certification
NSJC’s Executive Director Marcie Platkin has received certification as a Fellow in
Synagogue Administration (FSA).
In recognition of the critical role that executive directors play in the life of a
congregation, the NAASE (North American Association of Synagogue Executives)
has developed the FSA certification program, a standard of knowledge and experience
that attests to the high level of commitment, competence and professional performance
of its recipients.
Marcie wears many hats as she fulfills her role that involves: administration, human
resources, budget and finance, membership, facility management and knowledge of
ritual observance. She is also part of a leadership team that includes the Rabbi, Cantor
and synagogue President.
The attainment of the FSA certification recognizes “longevity in the field,
participation and leadership in the NAASE, and an advanced understanding of the
knowledge required to be a successful synagogue executive.” This credential is recognized by peers at NAASE and by
the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.
While Marcie tends to be modest about her achievement, she does feel “a sense of accomplishment and pride” in
earning this valuable certification.

I wish to use this opportunity to thank the people who
were instrumental in making the April 10th Cantor’s Concert
go so well.

Ari and Alizah, and to Lori Schneider. Thank you to my
father, David Kramer, for accompanying us throughout the
concert and to the Frank Hansen Trio for helping out during
second set. Thank you also to Marty Kupferberg, as well as

Bagel Patch (Patchogue) Kosher bagels can be ordered in
advance and picked-up.
In many ways, it is not difficult to keep kosher east of Nassau
County. Living on the eastern coast of the United States, we have
access to many products labeled with a hechsher (a rabbinical
product certification that something is kosher.) Stop & Shop,
Fairway and ShopRite carry numerous items, as do BJ’s and Costco.
Trader Joe’s has increased its number of items with a hechsher.
The bigger issue in our area is easy access to a variety of kosher
meats, glatt kosher meats, and kosher cheeses. This is a brief,
selected listing of kosher foods available on the north shore of

In celebration of Purim, Religious School talmidim had a
chance to literally turn things upside down!
In honor of Queen Esther and Mordechai, and their brave
and heroic actions in fourth century Persia, Torah Yoga instructor
Morah Melissa Kurtz helped students celebrate being Jewish
today by looking at things in a different way.
God was hidden in the story of Purim, and we can hide behind
a mask or a costume ourselves during Purim. As we search in
different ways for our strengths, our courage, our connections to
God, we get a different perception on life!
The talmidim in Kitah Dalet got to test their strength
and courage in a pre-Purim Torah yoga class with headstands,
handstand prep and arm balances. They made new connections
to body and soul, and to classmates by supporting each other. We
felt closer to our Purim heroes as we flipped our lives over too!

the Balkans. The result of their work is a unique archive and
website that captures their voices, pictures and stories, and
