TEMPLE BETH EL MESSENGER
RABBI MATT FUTTERMAN
Shalom Haverim
We are still in the middle of celebrating
Pesah and counting the days of the Omer
which ultimately leads to Shavuot and celebrating our receiving the Torah at Sinai thousands of years ago. But if none of us were alive
at that time why refer to the moment of Revelation as “our receiving the Torah”? Because
all of Judaism centers around the relationship
we build with God through our involvement
with Torah.
In anticipation of our Shavuot observances
I am reminded of one of my favorite midrashim about how each of us – when we stood
at Sinai – heard and understood God’s voice
differently. The 70-year-olds heard what was
appropriate for 70-year-olds and the 5-yearolds heard something entirely different but
appropriate for 5-year-olds. The midrash
depicts God as the ultimate teacher and pedagogue able to communicate with each audience if not each individual at his or her own
level of understanding.
At Beth El we have been offering various
portals through which each member can develop a personal and individualized connec-

tion to Torah as well: Torah discussions at
services, our weekly Monday lunch and learn
sessions, other adult education classes, and
Shabbat afternoon study before Havdalah are
already part of our routine schedules. In May
we will have two additional opportunities for
connecting with Torah.
First, on the Shabbat of May 15-16 we will
host a guest scholar in residence, Professor
Robert Harris, chair of the Department of
Biblical Studies at the Jewish Theological
Seminary. Rabbi Harris will offer three sessions for exploring the topic of “How Jews
Read the Bible”. We have all absorbed a lot
about the Bible from living in the greater
American culture where the Bible has influenced everything from art to politics. But
what is the role and message of the Bible
within the Jewish community and how may
we access that? These and other issues will be
raised by Rabbi Harris.
Rabbi Harris is not only an academic
scholar but has earned a special reputation
as a stand up comedian and play director as
well as leading the rock and roll band “SR2”
(formerly known as “Shake, Rabbi & Roll”).
I am sure you will find him both enlightening
and entertaining.
The following week we will conclude our
counting of the days of the Omer and usher
in Shavuot on Saturday night May 23 when
we participate together in “A Conversation
About God”. Our goal will be to clarify some
of our own beliefs as well as concerns about
“believing”. We will also examine what traditional teachings suggest or “require” when it
comes to matters of belief. I am sure that all
who participate will benefit from the sharing
of ideas and insights since none of us has a
monopoly on the truth.
Come join us and let’s carve out a niche for
Jewish learning together that works for you.
In the meantime I wish you a hag sameah
and look forward to studying Torah together
with you and learning from each and every
member of our community.

TEMPLE BETH EL MESSENGER
CLAIRE & EMANUEL G. ROSENBLATT RELIGIOUS SCHOOL
Celebrating a Year of Learning
With Shavuot approaching in just a few
weeks, we wrap up another year of study in
our Religious School. Since Pesach, it has
been a frantic dash with something special to
mark or observe practically every week: Yom
HaShoah, Yom HaAtzma’ut, Lag B’Omer and
Yom Yerushalayim. Each occasion gave us an
opportunity to teach our students a piece of
our history and heritage, from the ancient
teachings of Rabbi Akiva to the modern
miracle of the State of Israel.
This year we have begun to share and
exchange activities with our neighboring
congregations. We enjoyed a wonderful Chanukah play and Purim Carnival at Congregation Sons of Israel and we rolled up our
sleeves and made matza at Temple Hillel. We
at Beth El hosted everyone for a meaningful
Tu B’Shevat Seder in February. We are continuing to explore ways in which our schools
can share and work together. We have done
everything possible to make learning creative
and enjoyable. Our students have been a joy
and, like sponges, soaked up all that was presented in their classes. It has taken a real team
effort to create such a positive learning environment.
Thank you to our wonderful teachers,
Morah Denise Harris, Morah Elana Buczyner,
Edward Edelstein,
Educational Director
Morah Roberta Bauer and Morah Janet Goldman for your warmth and caring.
Thank you to all of our parents for your
dedication in bringing your children and
attending so many of our activities.
Thank you to our students for being so
sweet and eager to learn.
Thank you to Lauren Balberg, our Vice
President of Education and to our synagogue
officers and board of trustees for being so supportive of our Religious School program.
Thank you Rabbi Futterman for your
on-going involvement in the school program.
We look forward to continued growth and
positive experiences in the years ahead.
Simchat Talmud Torah
Our students will celebrate the culmination of another year of learning with a Simchat Talmud Torah on Saturday morning, May
9 at Shabbat services in the Main Sanctuary.
The students will gather under a giant talit
and will be called to the Torah. The students
will help to conduct part of the service and
will be presented with an age appropriate
book marking the completion of another year
of Torah study. They will also perform a medley of songs recalling all the holidays of the
year. A festive Kiddush will follow the service.
Temple Beth El Religious School is now accepting
registration for the 2015–16 school year as follows:
Kindergarten / First / Second Grade – meeting once a week
Third – Seventh Grade – meeting twice a week
Please seek out your neighbors and friends
and have them contact us for more information.
Join our growing family!

BOOK DISCUSSION
“The Saturday Wife” by Naomi Ragen
Monday, May 4 at 7:30 pm
Beautiful, blonde, materialistc Delilah Levy steps
into a life she could have
never imagined when in a
moment of panic she decides to marry a sincere
Rabbinical student. But
the reality of becoming a
paragon of virtue for a demanding and hypocritical
congregation leads sexy
Delilah into a vortex of shocking choices which
spiral out of control into a catastrophe which is as
sadly believable as it is wildly amusing.
Discussion will be led by Marcia Hain-Engle
