March 2012 - Kehilath Israel Synagogue
KEHILATH ISRAEL’S Vol. 48, Issue 3 March 2012 I am writing this column with very mixed emotions. The Board of Directors of Kehilath Israel Synagogue as well as the congregation at large has just officially elected Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz of Los Angeles as my successor and our future senior rabbi. I cannot tell you how thrilled and excited I am that he will be my successor. The only reason I speak of mixed feelings is that after 35 years as your spiritual leader, you all have been a second family to me and even though we will remain in Kansas City at least initially after my retirement, it is still a very big change to be writing a column about someone who will be sitting in my chair and doing my job. Having said all of that, even after serving an additional year, which the Administration and Board of Directors asked me to do so during a gap of rabbinic leadership, it is time to move on. Barbara and I are looking forward to semi-retirement. I will continue teaching university classes here in Kansas City, but we will be doing more travelling to visit our kids both in Houston and in the New York area. I have also been invited by the Pope to do research at the Vatican in Rome in the famous Papal library and also to be part of a somewhat elite group known as the Oxford Round Table of Scholars in England. So much for me and my family, as this column needs to be really about Rabbi Yanklowitz. Rabbi Yanklowitz is a modern Orthodox rabbi having recently graduated from the most cutting-edge rabbinical school in New York. He has served as one of the directors of Hillel of UCLA in Los Angeles. For a young man of 30 he has attained international acclaim as a social action activist and has been in the forefront of many situations around the world, including the earthquake in Haiti and the kosher meat crisis in Iowa. He and Shoshana will be moving to Kansas City on August 13, 2012 which will be the actual official date where the powers of senior rabbi will shift from me to Rabbi Yanklowitz. He and I have spoken several times a day for weeks. I have committed and will continue to do everything I can to make this transition smooth and easy. I have shared with him whatever advice and history I can and at his request will be available at all times to guide him and provide advice when SOUGHT BY HIM. Remaining in the community, I will continue to be of whatever help to any of you that I can in a strictly advisory role. A congregation can only have one senior rabbi continued on page 8 Adar - Nisan 5772 After a recommendation by the congregation at the annual meeting on February 4, 2012, the Board of Directors voted on February 11, 2012, to engage his services and is pleased to announce that Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz, of Los Angeles, CA has agreed to enter into a sacred partnership with us as our new senior rabbi of Kehilath Israel Synagogue. The initial term is for three years starting August 13, 2012. As a person of national celebrity, Rabbi Yanklowitz enthusiastically decided to transition from rabbinic communal work to congregational work. His decision was influenced in no small part by the atmosphere of spirit and welcoming that he and Shoshana received during their activity-filled interview weekend. Additionally he recognized the historic values and traditions of our K.I. community and the sacred relationship that we have fostered over the years with our rabbis. During his visit to K.I. he felt the warmth and dedication of our members, and it became evident to him that this was a community he wanted to serve as our senior rabbi and to make Kansas City/Overland Park his new home. One of the best secrets in the country is the wonderful lifestyle we enjoy in Kansas City. That became apparent to the rabbi and his wife. They recognized our city as a great place to raise a family which is what attracts and keeps many who visit our city. In accordance with the procedure established in our constitution, authority to engage a new senior rabbi is vested in the Board of Directors with congregational recommendation. As stated above, this recommendation was enthusiastically given, and the Board authorized a Letter of Intent (LOI) be offered. The negotiation of all financial and operational terms was assigned to a committee of experienced and dedicated members consisting of Arnold Caviar, Geoffrey Friedman, Sam Devinki, Felicia Weiner and me. This group represents years of experience and a continued on page 8 WHAT’S INSIDE Shabbat Schedule.............................................................................2 Cantor Shron’s Message...................................................................2 Anniversaries, Birthdays.................................................................4 Memorial Tablets............................................................................10 Donations.......................................................................................11 Calendar.........................................................................................13 SHABBAT SERVICES FRIDAY, MARCH 2 Candlelighting* ...........................5:55 P.M. Four score and thousands of years ago, there was a king named Achashveirosh and he was up for re-election. As part of his campaign trail, the good king threw a party inviting everyone from the United 127 States of Persia. Queen Vashti, out promoting her new book, could not attend her husband's banquet and citing irreconcilable differences, the king had her killed. A new first lady needed to be found, so Achashveirosh held a beauty pageant. After months of tireless desperation, the king, being the shallow and superficial man that he was, finally fell in love with a beautiful young lady named Esther, who was not all unpleasant to look at. After their lawyers drew up a pre-nuptial agreement, Achashveirosh held a large banquet on his yacht to celebrate his new-found queen. Meanwhile, two furloughed federal employees were planning an assassination attempt. A good Samaritan by the name of Mordy Chai overheard their plans and made public their plot. This attempted political coup, known in the Persian Press as Palacegate, gained Mordy Chai favor in the eyes of the king. After years of legal deliberation, the two assassins were found guilty, and since the jury was not hung, the assassins were instead. Back at the palace, one of the king's top aides, known simply as Haman, had a few ideas of his own. Since Haman was raised in a poor neighborhood, lacking sufficient resources and was left to purge on government subsidies, he was brought up in the arms of discrimination and was educationally-challenged. Haman wanted to annihilate part of the population, calculating that this would be an easy way to get rid of the citizens who were not going to vote for Achashveirosh, and that this ethnic cleansing would boost Achashveirosh in the polls. In order to pick a day for the mass killings, Haman set up Lotto Shushan, another wonderful government institution. The citizens who were going to be killed tied ribbons of amnesty around home-made torches and held an all-night vigil in front of the king's palace while singing songs of peace and solidarity. Although they did not attract the king's attention, the press corp fed on the situation, smacking cover stories on all the media outlets including daytime talk shows, practically turning the city of Shushan into a three-ring media circus. Mordy Chai went to the first lady and implored her to take action, reminding her that they shared an intimate relationship unbeknownst to the king. Distressed by the situation and unable to fit into her new gown, Queen Esther fasted for three days. Much to the dismay of Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig, the queen had a diet plan of her own. Esther was terrified to go before the king who was engrossed in very important matters of state - the remaining five minutes of the Army-Navy football game. After pulling away the remote from her dear husband, Esther invited him and his buddies to a gala banquet to be held the next evening. All three major networks bid to broadcast the party, but in the end the Persian Broadcasting System (PBS) got to show it. The next evening, guests began arriving hours before the event in sleek magic carpets and the all new aerodynamic bucket-seated two-humped camel. Haman, elated to be invited, came all decked out in his new Armani and flanked by an entourage of people bowing down to him -- sans Mordy Chai. Meanwhile, inside the palace Queen Esther was mingling with the many socialites, ambassadors, and other faceless royalty. Achashveirosh, curious to know the point of all this and wondering how to spell his name, went over to Esther and asked her the reason for this party. She informed him that someone was trying to terminate part of the population. Achashveirosh, who had no idea what was transpiring in his country, was clueless as to who could have conceived of such a clever plan. He immediately emailed a question to Esther: "Who would do such a thing?" Queen Esther had the answer to the question sealed in a larger than necessary envelope and guarded by the accounting firm of Hagai and Charvona. After a commercial break and brief drumroll, the envelope was ripped open. "It is Haman!" shouted out the celebrity ancontinued on page 3 www.kisyn.org March 2012/Adar - Nisan 5772 SIMCHA TREE LEAF DEDICATIONS Yasher Koach to our Torah & Haftarah Volunteers HAPPY ANNIVERSARY KAREN & STEVE PACK 1-29-2012 FROM YOUR LOVING FAMILY, IDA & CRAIG SAM & MARY FAST OF ESTHER On Wednesday, March 7 Jews around the world will be commemorating the Fast of Esther. This is one of our minor fast days, meaning it is observed from break of day until evening and not a twenty-four hour fast like Yom Kippur. In the Megillah of Esther, the Jewish people are commanded to fast in memory of the events of the Purim festival and the Jews being saved in the land of Iran. The fast begins at 5:23 a.m. and will conclude at 6:50 p.m. Kehilath Israel Synagogue is blessed with a plethora of people who participate regularly in our services throughout the year and whose efforts and contributions are greatly appreciated. A hearty yasher koach to the following participants in the last year: Joe Adamous, Paul Blackman, Steve Cline, Dr. Donald Cohen, the Honorable Art Federman, Geoff Friedman, Sherrill Friedman, Bob Gast, Jeff Goldenberg, Elliott Goldstein, Marty Gorin, Cory Gutovitz, Jeremy Gutovitz, Joel Gutovitz, Michael Heiligman, Dan Kass, Dr. Harold Koch, Seymour Krinsky, Norbert Lipschuetz, Seth Mandl, Jonathan Margolies, Dr. Bill Nowack, Steve Osman, Adam Rich, Shmuel Shron, Jacob Schulzinger, Dr. Peter Shapiro, Khatzkel Shvartsblat, Ben Siegel, Dr. Michael Sokol, Gene Soloff, Dr. Arnold Tropp, Manny Winston, Ricardo Zepeda. Cantor's Corner cont'd from page 2.......... nouncer. The audience gasped in disbelief as Haman was escorted to center stage. "I don't deserve this," exclaimed a shocked Haman. "Seriously, I don't." Haman's 15 minutes of fame were short-lived as he was immediately escorted backstage. Using taxpayers money, he was then brought to a penitentiary in Texas, where he would remain on Death Row, forced to listen to an all Country music radio station until his eventual demise. Achashveirosh declared that everything Haman owned would become Mordy Chai's, including his palatial estate in the Bahamas, his Grateful Dead CD collection (and the signed Jerry Garcia t-shirt), his pentium laptop and 28.8 baud modem, his entire Saks Fifth Avenue collection of triangular hats, and a lifetime supply of Spam. And so it was with these riches that the Jewish people prospered and began the honored tradition of publishing humorous articles on Purim. Have a joyous Purim, Rav Hazzan Jeffrey A. BREAD AND PASTRY SHOULD NOT BE PURCHASED UNTIL SUNDAY, APRIL 15 ERUV TAVSHILIN This year, with the closing days of Passover taking place on Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14, the ritual of Eruv Tavshilin is to be recited on the eve of the seventh day, Thursday, April 12 before candlelighting. When Passover falls on a Friday, in order that it may be permissible to cook on that day for Saturday (one is permitted to cook on a holiday for that day alone), the head of the household must perform the ritual of “Eruv Tavshilin” before the festival. This consists of taking some matzah and some other food, such as fish or meat, putting them on a plate, raising it and then reciting the following prayers: Blessed art Thou, Eternal our G-d, Ruler of the Universe. Who made us holy with His commandments, and commanded us concerning the Eruv. With this Eruv it shall be permissible for us to bake, cook and to keep the food warm; to light the candles, and to prepare all necessary things on the festival for the Sabbath. This shall be permitted to us and to all Jews who live in this city. The food for this ceremony is to be eaten on Shabbat, April 14, the eight day of Passover, during the daytime hours. March 2012/Adar - Nisan 5772 www.kisyn.org Rabbi Mandl cont’d from page 1..... and that will be Rabbi Yanklowitz. I will continue to share with all of you in your happy times, and unfortunately when necessary sad times, but in a most definitely secondary or advisory kind of role. I am sure that for many of you this will be a wonderful transition, even as it may be somewhat difficult for me. I may be the “old pair of shoes” that you get used to and have worn for many years. New shoes, even though they are shiny and bright, often are a little tight or a little difficult to wear but in time become your “old shoes.” That is how any transition happens in the world of leadership, especially after a 35 year tenure. Those of you who are close to me know that when Barbara and I came here with our two little boys of 5 and 3, we doubted that we would stay more than five or six years. We saw K.I. and Kansas City as a “learning experience” before moving on to a mega-city and possibly mega-congregation. We fell in love with the community, both Jewishly and generally, as well as all of you. I only hope that Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz and his lovely wife, Shoshana, will have the same experience. It is unheard of, and I wonder if it even exists anywhere else in the United States, that a congregation has had only two rabbis in over 75 years! May that number exceed 100 years, and may Rabbi Yanklowitz be the third cog in the wheel that will make that happen. Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Herbert J. Mandl, PhD President cont’d from page 1........... complete dedication to the best interests of the synagogue as either a president or officer. After careful discussions with both the rabbi and K.I., this LOI was transferred to a formal contract. Many revisions were made and modifications made that create a base for future growth and pave the way to achieving the long term goals of the congregation. This is a testament to the wisdom of the committee in completing a contractual arrangement that is fair and equitable to both parties. As precedent dictates, financial arrangements for all clergy and senior staff remain confidential for obvious reasons. We are pleased that Rabbi and Shoshana Yanklowitz have chosen a home in the eruv by agreeing to live in the house currently owned by the congregation. I would like to believe that each person who met and talked with Rabbi and Shoshana Yanklowitz during their weekend here will look forward to more engaging programming and a continued interaction with both of them. The goal will be to create a more energetic environment, and I am excited that we are bringing such a dynamic individual to our congregation to help lead us in this direction. Mazal Tov to our new rabbi and his wife, for making such a good decision. Mazal Tov, also, to our congregation for being the kind of people that would attract a rabbi and his wife of this obvious merit. More information about the transition and potential visits will be made available to the congregation as they are formalized. We look forward to some exciting times for K.I. as it enters a new era.
