Over 30 percent of the route is already on traffic-free greenways, creating safe, accessible routes for people of all ages and abilities. The ECG fosters healthy lifestyles, empowers sustainable transportation, and promotes tourism. Connecticut’s section of the East Coast Greenway is nearly 200 miles from Sterling to Greenwich, and includes over 20 local trails. In the Greater Hartford & Connecticut River Valley region, the Greenway connects the Hop River Trail in Willimantic, and travels west through the Charter Oak Greenway, the Riverfront Recapture Greenway in East Hartford and Hartford, through Downtown Hartford, to the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail that includes the northern towns of Simsbury, Avon, Farmington, and Southington. The East Coast Greenway Alliance (ECGA) is the non-profit organization that spearheads the project’s development. Based in Durham, N.C., the ECGA employs field staff in each of its four regions. Discover how Greater Hartford, New Haven and Connecticut’s River Valley have played an important part in African-American history. Our region, the site of the historic Amistad trial and the home for its Mende tribesmen, had several stops on the Underground Railroad. The following are just a few of the 130 Freedom Trail sites in Connecticut: The Amistad Center for Art & Culture at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art (600 Main St., Hartford) Vital collection of nearly 7,000 items of art, artifacts and popular culture that document the experience, expressions and history of people of African descent in America. Open Wed. thru Fri. from 11am–5pm, Sat. and Sun. from 10am– 5 pm, and the first Thursday of every month from 11am–8pm. 860-838-4133 www.AmistadArtandCulture.org Amistad Memorial (165 Church St., in front of New Haven City Hall) Sculpted by Ed Hamilton in 1992, this 14-foot bronze relief sculpture of Senghe Pieh (known as Joseph Cinque), the leader of the Mende Africans, stands on the site of the former New Haven Jail, where the kidnapped tribesmen were imprisoned in 1839 while awaiting trial. Benjamin Douglas House (11 South Main St., Middletown) This Freedom Trail site was part of the Underground Railroad. Across the street on the Town Green, a Civil War monument lists AfricanAmerican soldier James Powers. Privately owned. Not open to the public. Connecticut Freedom Trail Website notes locations that embody the struggle toward freedom and human dignity, celebrate the accomplishments of the state’s African-American community, and promote heritage tourism. There are more than 130 sites in more than 50 towns, and the Trail continues to grow. From 1840 on, it was a major stop on the Underground Railroad. “Passengers” were helped along by “conductors” who hid them in their own homes, “stations” on the “railroad.” No one knows how many “passengers” came through Farmington, but there were enough for it to be dubbed “Connecticut’s Grand Central Station.” Survivors of the Amistad rebellion lived here for eight months in 1841. They studied, farmed and raised funds for their passage home. One tribesman, Foon, died here and is buried in Riverside Cemetery. Most of the Farmington sites still are private homes. For more information, contact the Farmington Historical Society at 860-678-1645. www.farmingtonhistoricalsociety-ct.org The Freedom Schooner Amistad (Long Wharf, New Haven) The Amistad, Connecticut’s Flagship and Tall Ship Ambassador, teaches the important lessons of history inherent in the 1839 Amistad incident.
