Whether you are visiting for business or pleasure, you will discover our region of extraordinary natural beauty, rich history, cultural arts, and numerous surprises. We offer countless ways for you to enjoy yourself – no matter what your interests. Take a walk into our nation’s past through historic houses and renowned museums. Delight in an ever-changing arts and entertainment scene that enthralls and educates. Choose from an array of restaurants serving tantalizing cuisines from all corners of the earth. Stay busy from morning to night in a variety of outdoor recreational activities. Or, if you simply want to shop or relax under a leafy oak tree…. that’s just fine, too. It’s your business trip, your vacation....and we can make it special in any season. Enjoy your stay in Connecticut and please come back soon. M. Jodi Rell Governor of Connecticut Imagine a region with big city sophistication, along with the charm and splendor of the countryside, sparkling rivers and shoreline, centuries of history and culture, and a seemingly endless array of interesting sights to enjoy. We are located along the Connecticut River, which winds its way up from the Long Island Sound over hills and rolling valleys, through Hartford and to the Massachusetts border. In any season, this is a picturesque and exciting location. It’s easy to get here. Hartford, our Capital City, is just a 2-hour drive from New York or Boston. Bradley International Airport – gateway to Southern New England – is only minutes from the Downtown area, as is Brainard Airport, a favorite of small aircraft pilots. Our region is part of the AMTRAK system and home to a number of major bus lines. Seeking the perfect spot for a day-trip, overnight visit, or longer vacation stay? Ask our hospitality professionals at Connecticut’s River Valley how to make your visit memorable. The Greater Hartford Convention & Visitors Bureau is ready to help bring your convention, meeting or trade show to Hartford and the surrounding region. Our commitment is to find the location with services that best meets your needs. Especially exciting is our dynamic 540,000 square-foot Connecticut Convention Center at Adriaen’s Landing in Downtown Hartford. In Spring 2009, the spectacular new Connecticut Science Center will open in Downtown Hartford. It’s just one more reason to plan a trip here. We look forward to seeing you and hope you enjoy your visit. H. Farmington Freedom Trail sites: Approximately 10 miles from Hartford, the picturesquetown of Farmington played an important part in the struggle against slavery. From 1840 on, it was a major stop on the Underground Railroad. “Passengers” were helped along by “conductors” who hid them in their own homes – “stations” on the “railroad.” No one knows how many “passengers” came through Farmington, but there were enough for it to be dubbed “Connecticut’s Grand Central Station.” Survivors of the Amistad rebellion lived here for eight months in 1841. Here, they studied, farmed, and raised funds for their passage home. One tribesman, Foon, died here and is buried in Riverside Cemetery. Most of the Farmington sites still are private homes. Experience his place. Just minutes from downtown Hartford is The Mark Twain House, a unique home where America's favorite humorist lived with his family, wrote timeless novels about Tom, Huck and Becky, and entertained luminaries of the Gilded Age. Around a mahogany table in a dining room decorated by Tiffany, guests dined on opulent meals while their host regaled them with the tales that would become classics for succeeding generations. Tour Mark Twain’s restored Victorian mansion and see his famed billiard table, the bed carved with angels where he slept, and the library where he invented bedtime stories for his three daughters. Adjacent to this incomparable home is the Museum Center, featuring our latest exhibition, Twain, Tiffany and Other Treasures: Highlights from the Collection of The Mark Twain House & Museum.
