„DYSPHAGIA IN NEUROMUSCULAR DISEASES“

This workshop provides attendees with a neuro-anatomical framework and taxonomy
appropriate to the study of neuromuscular disease (NMD). Examples of NMDs will be
systematically presented and covered: disease specific data (e.g., prevalence, incidence,
etiological factors, and course), affect on swallowing, and evidence-based interventions.
OBJECTIVES:
By the end of this course:
• Participants will be able to identify the various levels of the nervous system that are
potentially affected by NMDs and provide examples of specific diseases that develop at
each level.
•
Participants will recognize signs and symptoms from clinical assessments that will help
them to define the level of NMD and provide clues regarding general directions for
dysphagia treatment.
•
Participants will be able to describe the most critical disease specific data for various
NMDs that affect swallowing.
•
Participants will be able to discuss options for dysphagia intervention based on principles
of treatment and available evidence.
Robert Miller, PhD
Robert Miller is a senior lecturer emeritus in the Department of Speech and Hearing
Sciences at the University of Washington. Prior to joining the faculty he was a speechlanguage pathologist for VA Puget Sound Health Care System where he was Chief of
Audiology and Speech Pathology. After 30-years of service he was awarded the
Distinguished Career Award from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Dr. Miller also has held
clinical appointments in the Departments of Rehabilitation Medicine and
Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Washington. He is a Fellow of
the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and holds board certification from the

Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences. He received an Outstanding Clinical Achievement Award from the Washington Speech and Hearing Association.
Dr. Miller's clinical focus is in the area of adult neurogenic communication disorders and most
of his publications focus on dysphagia. He has co-authored three books, numerous chapters
and peer-reviewed journal articles. He currently teaches graduate courses in Dysphagia and
Neural Basis for Speech, Language and Hearing
His most recent publication with Plural Publishing titled Dysphagia in Neuromuscular
