In 2008, sociologists from the University of Massachusetts
researched thousands of articles and letters published in 300
American and British parenting magazines between 1920 and
2006. The research found that the vast majority of modern-day
children are only asked to take on the most trivial household

On May 17, 1902 a sponge diver was exploring a shipwreck off
the coast of Antikythera, an island between the Greek mainland
and Crete. The wreck was first discovered in 1900, but its most
famous artifact was not brought to the surface until two years
later. On that day, the lucky Greek diver brought up a heavily
encrusted mechanism that turned out to be the world’s first
known scientific instrument.
A dictionary-size assemblage of 37 interlocking dials crafted
with the precision and complexity of a 19th-century Swiss clock,
the machine has been dated to approximately 150 B.C. It originated,
perhaps, from the island of Rhodes, renowned in classical times
for its automata and mechanical follies. It seems that its maker
used information about astronomical theories, and made a machine
that could predict the positions of celestial bodies 19 years into
the future.
The device captured the world’s imagination. Such
craftsmanship wouldn’t be seen for a thousand years after the
Greeks – but its purpose was a mystery to 20th-century

archaeologists. Many different researchers took turns
investigating the machine and its possible uses. Scientists
painstakingly reverse-engineered the mechanism, deciphered
the script etched on its housing – the world’s first instruction
manual – and pieced the fragments together into a physical and
digital models. They even created a working replica.
Scientists determined that the mechanism predicted future
positions of the moon and sun, and perhaps other planets. But
that’s not all: the researchers found a tiny dial labeled with the
locations of forthcoming Olympic competitions. The feature
was probably not integral to its function, but a stylish
demonstration of the machine’s power. A bit like a watch that
displays stock prices or an iPhone-enabled speedometer. The
Olympics were of great importance to ancient Greeks, who
labeled years in relation to ongoing Olympiads and suspended
wars for the games’ duration. Perhaps the mechanism was used
to foretell the celestial auspices of competitions though no one
knows for certain.
Of course, the mechanism itself was much more significant
than a watch. It’s the ancestor of all scientific instrumentation.
Yet though its functions are understood, its application remains
unknown. Without any insights into the mind of the designer,
we can only look at the result – and the result is dazzling.

Animal Welfare and agree that animals should be treated humanely,
but the idea that animals should have the same rights as people
is ridiculous. I do admit that a wild animal may behave in
unpredictable ways and turn against its master, but if properly

air passengers have long complained about.
As we all know only too well, there are things in life you can’t
choose, like your relatives, for example. Until recently, this also
applied to your seatmate on an airplane. Unless you could afford
a first-class ticket, you had little say about who would be sitting
next to you during the f light. Now, a new Web business,
appropriately named AirTroductions, is attempting to resolve
the problem of undesirable seat-neighbours.
The website is the brainstorm of frequent flier and New York
public relations expert Peter Shankman, who is trying to transfer
the online dating format to the aircraft seating system. Having taken
over 500 flights in the past four years, he says he can count on one
hand the number of times that he’s been seated next to someone
he actually wanted to talk to. So he came up with the idea to connect
like-minded passengers who are traveling on the same flights.
Here’s how it works: People go to the website, log in for free
and create personal or business profiles. They can post a photo,
just like in all types of computer dating services. Then, before
taking a flight, they enter the details of the trip and are notified
of other members booked on the same flight. They’re given the
option of sending anonymous e-mail through the site, at which
point a five-dollar fee is charged. The potential neighbours then
determine whether they want to meet at the airport, and, if
mutually acceptable, get reassigned to adjoining seats.
Peter Shankman says he took inspiration for
AirTroductions.com from one particularly memorable flight
which he spent sitting next to Miss Texas. He swears it was the
conversation rather than the pretty face that caused the flight
to be the shortest one in his life. Shankman admits that switching
seats at the gate could mean that one ends up in the uncomfortable
middle seat, but he believes it’s worth it if you have a chance to
spend the flight in good company.

some tips that may prove useful. First of all, it would be wise to find
amentor –someone experienced and willing to teach you afew things
a gondolier must know. Although technically optional, this step can
turn out to be the key to success. Alternatively, you may find aschool
in which they’ll teach you about how to perfectly manoeuvre the
gondola. Perhaps the most famous place to attend for this sort of thing
is the critically acclaimed Academy of Gondoliering in Venice. The
most important thing, however, is to dedicate your life to reaching
your goal. This means practice, practice and practice! Get a good
workout to build your upper body muscles, as steering the gondola
takes more than a little strength; it is quite demanding physically. In
order to navigate a gondola with absolute expertise, practice could
take anywhere between a couple of months to a few years.
Finally, you take an exam. You are to navigate a gondola full of
judges from the Gondolier Association. You must navigate down
the canals of Venice without bumping into walls, showing you know
how to back it up or get it off a sandbar. If you make a slightest
mistake, you fail. But once you have passed, you can go ahead and
get yourself one of those few licenses issued in Venice.

All my family are big fans of the Big Star Circus. It’s been
coming to our town since 1974, and people return to see the show
year after year. Every edition is unique, there are no repeats. You
won’t have animal tricks there, I wouldn’t go for that. It’s just
humans performing feasts beyond imagination. There’s a band
playing music, and the clowns are amazing. The upcoming show
is going to have unicyclists, jugglers, and trick ropers. We’ll be

Wherever we go, we are surrounded by advertising – the colors
and pictures get blurred and we don’t even notice it anymore.
But, unfortunately, it is there, attacking our senses and affecting
our brains. I believe there are many reasons why advertising in
the street should be banned.
First of all, it is unaesthetic. Many of the pictures that we see
on billboards are far from tasteful, yet they often cover historical
buildings and, as a result, the cities are much less pleasant to the
eye. Secondly, advertising makes the streets literally dirty. On
every street corner, we are accosted by a person handing out
fliers which are usually immediately dropped on the ground.
That causes the streets to be littered and the city to spend money
on cleaning them.
It could be argued that everyone can advertise their products
as long as they are doing so legally. However, there are also

I have a vague memory of being taken to the circus by my dad
as a surprise one day after school. I just couldn’t believe my good
luck. The smell of popcorn, the excitement, and the wonder of it
all. I certainly couldn’t see the animals in the show were being

in a show that was dangerous to their health as well as their mental
well-being. I’m absolutely sure people should vote with their feet
against the circuses that continue this cruel and outdated practice.

are by no means pleasant.
Summing up, it should be illegal to advertise anything in
public places such as streets. It makes our cities ugly, dirty
and louder than necessary. There are plenty of other ways
to advertise that leave us with a choice of whether we want
to be part of it or not. In the streets we, unfortunately, have
no choice.

Last Saturday a friend came over and brought a movie he
wanted to watch with me. It was a 2009 science-fiction blockbuster
entitled “Surrogates” starring Bruce Willis.
The movie is, obviously, set in the future. And the future is
frightening. Nobody leaves their home or bed anymore – every
morning they hook their brains up to their personal robots
– surrogates – and the robots live for them. Then one day a cop
(Willis) is forced to actually investigate something personally.
We follow him through the worlds of surrogates and rebels and
watch him struggle with his body. As the plot unfolds, we watch
with horror how people, dependent on their surrogates, are
not only incapable of living for themselves but worse than that
– are strangers to their loved ones whom they meet only through
the surrogates.
As is the case with most science-fiction movies, this one is
also full of special effects and they are stunning. It is also packed
with breathtaking stunts because the robots are supposed to
be much more agile than humans and capable of amazing feats.
For the most part the movie is like many others – macho guys
chasing one another and shooting at everything that moves.
But, it is the insightful vision of what can happen to us that is
the most important.
I highly recommend this movie not only to science-fiction
fans but also to all those who think virtual reality and robots doing
everything for us will make our future happy. Watch it and beware.

tighten.
Just a few months before he was a happy man, planning to
marry his girlfriend and expand his business. But then his life
turned upside down. His girlfriend left him with a friend, and an
unwise investment decision brought his business to the brink of

ruin. If he was to survive, he would have to sell the only precious
thing he possessed – a beautifully decorated wooden desk that
had been in the family for over 200 years. Sean knew it was worth
a lot but it was the sentimental value that made it priceless to him.

the door and got speechless – Chris Harrison was female, around
thirty, and stunningly beautiful.
Ignoring his obvious astonishment, Miss Harrison set to work.
While examining the desk, she asked Sean if he realised it had
a hidden compartment. Still astounded, Sean looked as she
pressed one of the ornaments, and a tiny secret drawer came out.
It contained twenty gold coins and a ring.
A year later, Chris and Sean were sitting at his antique desk.

Die im Mai letzten Jahres durchgeführten Untersuchungen
haben ….1.1….…., dass es immer mehr Jugendliche (über ein
Viertel der Befragten) gibt, die mit ihrem Leben nicht zufrieden sind, die sich einsam und nicht verstanden fühlen, die viele Fragen stellen, auf die weder die Kirche noch die Nächsten
eine Antwort kennen. Solche Personen ….1.2….…. oft zu Opfer
einer Sekte, die ihre Leichtgläubigkeit und Isoliertheit ausnutzt
und Erleuchtung und Selbstfindung verspricht.
Neue Sektenmitglieder werden auf den Straßen, in den Verkehrsmitteln, Einkaufszentren und in der letzten Zeit auch via

In der Sekte werden sie oft einer Gehirnwäsche unterzogen.

ohne Lügen und Gleichgültigkeit erwartet, dass die neuen Brüder
und Schwester wichtiger als die eigene Familie seien. Der Vater der
Sekte,der Guru, fordert absolute Gehorsamkeit und ….1.5……. als
Autorität. Man darf ihm nicht widersprechen und muss ihm blind
gehorchen, sonst kann man bestraft werden. In vielen Sekten zwingt
man die Anhänger sogar zu einer schweren körperlichen Arbeit,
zum Heiraten eines vom Guru gewählten Partners oder zur Bettelei ums Geld. Die Jünger werden erniedrigt und ....1.6……. Es wurden auch Todesopfer notiert. Falls sie die Sekte verlassen wollen,
stoßen sie auf viele unerwartete Probleme. Es fällt wirklich schwer
sich aus den Fängen einer Sekte zu befreien, aber es ist möglich.

die Senioren mitbringen, die Textverarbeitung lernen oder im

Wichtig bei den Sitzungen am PC: Es soll entspannt zugehen.
Der unbarmherzige Druck aus dem Arbeitsleben soll sich nicht
breitmachen. Manche der „Anschluss“-Suchenden waren in
ihren letzten Arbeitsjahren Opfer der Computerisierung. Sie
haben den PC als persönliche Folter erlebt oder gar als Hebel,
um sie vorzeitig aus dem Beruf zu kicken.
Im Internetcafé beweisen sie sich jetzt, dass sie es doch können.
Sie erfahren, dass Computer auch Spaß machen. Dass sie nützlich
sind und beherrschbar. Mit zarten Bewegungen der Maus (und
einem Klick ab und zu) bummeln sie durch Frankfurt: 16. April,
16.00 bis 18.00 Uhr Mit der Maus durch Frankfurt: von den Römern
bis zu den Bankern – durch Messen, Museen und den
Palmengarten, mit Besuchen bei Goethe und Käpt’n Blaubart.
Oder machen gar eine Weltreise: 23. April, 16.00 bis 18.00 Uhr
Mit der Maus aus Frankfurt raus: ins Weiße Haus, in den Louvre,
in die Südsee, mit der NASA auf den Jupiter.
Andere „Anschluss“-Besucher haben in der Zeitung gelesen,
dass man demnächst den Haushalt über den Computer steuern
kann. Das wäre was fürs „richtige“ Alter, denken sie.
Wie es in ein paar Jahren in Frankfurt aussehen könnte,
darüber denkt die Anschluss-Crew nach: „Wir möchten ein
Kommunikationsnetz für ältere Menschen auf bauen, mit
Zugangspunkten in Altersheimen, in Wohnblöcken, ein
Senioren-Netzwerk im Internet.“

Zadanie 5.
Die Deutschen sind immer im Stress, die Türken wissen zu
leben. Wie hilfreich ist es angesichts solcher Vorurteile doch,
dass für die Schwaben alle Rheinländer Luftikusse sind, diese
die Schwaben grob und verschlossen nennen, die Ostfriesen für
alle übrigen Deutschen für jeden dummen Witz gut sind. Istanbuler
rümpfen über die Landbevölkerung die Nase, für türkische
Bauern sind Istanbuler schon vom Westen verdorben.
An türkischen Badestränden weht die Flagge mit dem Halbmond,
Was die hier zu suchen hat, ist mir unklar. Aber ich werde den
Teufel tun und fragen. Genauso wenig wie ich einen Witz darüber
reißen werde, dass der Republikgründer Atatürk überall mit seinen
hehren Sprüchen und einem Denkmal gegenwärtig ist.
Die Türken sind seit dem Zusammenbruch des Osmanischen
Reiches immer noch auf der Suche nach einem
Nationalbewusstsein, ich als Nachkriegsdeutsche habe meine
Probleme damit. Aber wie soll ich das meinen türkischen Freunden
erklären? Deutsche wie Türken haben Grund genug, vor ihrer
eigenen Haustür zu kehren, aber ich möchte trotzdem sagen
dürfen, dass die türkische Regierung den Kurden Schulunterricht
und Zeitungen in kurdischer Sprache ermöglichen sollte.
Natürlich sind mir Atatürk und seine Anhänger weitaus lieber
als die islamischen Fundamentalisten, derer sie sich wehren
wollen. Da schleiche ich durch das tiefreligiöse Konya und möchte
am liebsten eine Tarnkappe aufsetzen, weil ich mir mit meinem
bloßen Kopf obszön vorkomme. Ich möchte vor den bärtigen
Männern davonlaufen, die mir vor lauter Frömmigkeit nicht in
die Augen schauen, wenn sie mir eine Postkarte verkaufen. Ich
möchte den jungen Mädchen in ihren zugeknöpften Mänteln
und ihrem großen Kopftuch klar machen, dass sie sich dem Manne
nicht zu unterwerfen haben – und nur dieses bedeutet ihre
Aufmachung. Aber wie soll ich ihnen das erklären?
Natürlich kann ich das Kopftuch tolerieren, bayerische
Bäuerinnen tragen es, Brigitte Bardot und Audrey Hepburn
haben es in den fünfziger Jahren getragen. Das Kopftuch ist ein

Seit dem 1. Februar 1999 treffen sich Rentnerinnen und
Pensionäre, Web-Girls und Web-Witches, Omas und Opas,
Neugierige und Schon-Wissende, Anfänger und Fortgeschrittene.
Sie können hier Anschluss suchen – und finden. Im ersten
Internetcafé Deutschlands für Senioren: „Anschluss“ heißt es.
Eschersheimer Landstraße/Ecke Fichardstraße in Frankfurt.
Hier steht das Senioren-Rathaus.
Sechs Computerplätze gibt es bisher, einen Beamer für den
Unterricht, zwei Drucker, einen Scanner. Auch ein Lesephon ist
da, ein Computer, der Blinden Bücher vorlesen kann. Er hat eine
etwas blecherne Stimme. Und große Schwierigkeiten bei englischen
oder französischen Wörtern – die spricht er nämlich sehr deutsch
aus. In solchen Fällen kann man ihm aber befehlen, zu
buchstabieren.
In der Ecke hinter dem Computerraum ist das Café, mit
Bistro-Tisch, Kühlschrank und Spülmaschine, mit Kuchen, Kaffee,
Tee und Wasser. Vorn am Eingang sind Tische und Sessel,
dazwischen Palmen und Farne, auf einem Regal eine Vase mit
Frühlingsblumen. An der Tür hängen Einladungen – zum 1. Mai
unter Apfelbäumen, ganz ohne Netz und Computer. Oder zur
„Himmelfahrt mit den Web-Witches“ – einer Kulturreise im
Internet. Montags und dienstags gibt es Einführungen in
PC-Programme – Textverarbeitung zuallererst, aber auch
Grundlagen für die Arbeit am Computer. Mittwochs, donnerstags
und freitags kann man im Internet surfen.
Heiner, 67, ist Tutor. Er sieht sich nicht als Lehrer, Aufseher
oder Einpauker, wie gängige Wörterbücher den Tutor definieren.

Tag nur junge Leute. Manche in Anzug, Weste und mit Krawatte.
Andere in Jeans und T-Shirt. Die Veranstaltung „Jugend und

verbrannt. Aber ich will keine 622 Jahre mehr warten,
bis eine Weltreligion von der anderen lernt.

6.1.
Im Prinzip sollte das Arbeitsrecht helfen, Arbeitsplätze
zu schaffen. Doch zurzeit verursachen die Gesetze hohe
Kosten, zum Beispiel auch der Kündigungs-, Mutter-oder
Schwerbehindertenschutz. Viele kleine und mittlere
Arbeitgeber stellen deshalb keine Arbeitslosen mehr ein
und fahren lieber Überstunden oder rationalisieren.
6.2.
Ein neues Arbeitsrecht müsste Arbeitnehmer stärker
an ihrem Unternehmen beteiligen, am Gewinn, aber
auch am Verlust. Unternehmen müssten f lexibler
werden bei der Arbeitszeit und gerechter bei der
Bezahlung, die sich vor allem an der Leistung orientieren
sollte. Und wenn es einer Firma schlecht geht, muss
der Arbeitgeber schnell reagieren können. In
dringenden Fällen muss er ohne lange Prozesse und
erhebliche Kosten Arbeitsplätze abbauen oder
Mitarbeiter versetzen dürfen.

40 Jahre lang sorgte das Arbeitsrecht für soziale
Gerechtigkeit und für ein gutes Arbeitsklima. Um diese
Stabilität beneiden uns viele andere Länder, sie ist ein
großer Standortvorteil. Das Arbeitsrecht kann aber

może nadciągająca armia albo przejeżdżający wielki pojazd. Wszystko zależy od pomysłu autora. Wskazane jest
używanie zdań okolicznikowych czasu (als, wenn, nachdem, bevor, solange, seitdem, bis, während) oraz przysłówków (überraschenderweise, plötzlich, sofort, bald,
letztendlich).
W dobrym opowiadaniu należy budować napięcie,
które doprowadza do punktu kulminacyjnego. Pamiętaj
o zachowaniu spójności akcji.
3. W opisie wskazane jest używanie zdań przydawkowych typu: Es ist eine Schule, in der es keine Noten gibt,
rozszerzonej przydawki, np.: Die mit besten Geräten ausgerüstete Schule macht einen großen Eindruck.
Mile widziane byłoby użycie trybu przypuszczającego (Konkjunktiv II), ponieważ w tym temacie można popuścić wodze fantazji, np.: Es wäre super, wenn es keine
Hausaufgaben gäbe.
