Zermatt – a little Swiss town – is packed all year round even
though it only consists of hostels, guesthouses, restaurants and
taverns. And 8 lifts. Whichever way you leave the town – the signs
direct you to the nearest lift. The glacier is so high above the sea
level that the 25km of slopes can stay open 12 months a year. It is
great fun and most of the area is suitable for beginners and intermediates but of course, it’s big enough to offer something for
everyone. If you like a rush of adrenaline – there are a few steeper
places where you can zip down at racing speed. Just remember

The Kecksburg UFO incident

Shortly after 6:30 p.m. on December 9, 1965, a woman named
Frances Kalp called John Murphy of radio station in Greensburg,
Pennsylvania to report that a flaming object had crashed into the
woods near her home. She said that she and her children had
walked to within half a mile of the site and had seen something
that looked like a ”four-pointed star”.
After talking to her, Murphy called the Pennsylvania State Police, who then called the woman and asked her to meet them in
nearby Kecksburg and lead them to the spot. Murphy decided
to drive out to the location and see for himself. At the scene, Mur-

Macy Benz car to pass him and hold the lead until Evanstone.
Here Frank took the lead again, made the turn and started on the
way back home. Soon, he had to stop again for another repair.
Frank thought the Macy Benz had passed him again but learned
later that Macy didn’t even get that far.
A little over 10 hours after the race started, Frank Duryea was
the first to cross the finish line having survived a journey interrupted by two repairs, a stop for gasoline and a ten-minute wait
for a passing train at a railroad crossing. His average speed was
7.3 miles per hour and he took home a prize of $2,000 ($49,500 in
today’s money). After receiving congratulations from a small group still remaining at the finish line, Frank Duryea turned the car
and drove back home. The Mueller Benz, the only other machine to finish, was driven across the line by the driver’s assistant because the driver, Mr. Mueller had been so tired he had collapsed.

checked out the crash site. He later said that when State Police
officials returned from the woods, they were unwilling to answer questions about what they had found.
Murphy then drove back to Greenburg to the State Police office, where an official announcement was made to the press that police had searched the woods and did not find anything unusual.
When Murphy heard a few hours later that one of the police officers and the military people were going back out to the
woods to investigate, he wanted to go with them and they agreed. But when they arrived at Kecksburg, they did not let Murphy enter the woods with them. By now, with the news on radio and television, the area was packed with cars and onlookers. But the military blocked the area and civilians were no
longer allowed to enter the site.
A few civilians, however, were able to get close enough to
see the object. These witnesses later reported they’d seen a strange dark object nine to twelve feet long with a gold band around
the bottom. No one saw much before the soldiers asked them
to leave.
By the next day, there was little evidence that anything had
occurred in the area. The Air Force issued the official explanation that a meteorite was the cause of the reports of a glowing
object in the skies the evening before, and the media accepted
this explanation.
And today, nearly fifty years later, there are still people who claim that it was a UFO that crashed in the woods of Pennsylvania.

The third most common pet in North America today, after
dogs and cats, is the ferret. Ms. Jasmine Mightley from the small
town of Harton, Pennsylvania, is a huge fan of ferrets and is now
a proud owner of seven such furry friends. Brutus, the oldest
one, is her favourite. The ferrets live outdoors in their nesting
boxes, but come into the house to play every night. But one day
after the usual evening play, the whole ferret family went missing.
The six other ferrets were quickly brought home, but there was
no sign of Brutus. Ms. Mightley was desperate. She quickly enlisted
the help of her neighbours, posting a notice at the local shopping
centre. The notice said: “Lost ferret, Brutus, very friendly, will
not bite, loves fresh chicken breast.”
Everyone knew Ms. Mightley and her ferrets so the whole
community was very concerned. Two days later – when Ms.
Mightley thought all hope was lost – a woman living five houses
down the road was coming home about 9.30pm. In the bushes
surrounding her home she spied something furry. She got into
the house and returned with a piece of chicken breast. Within
seconds Brutus came running and licking his lips – it was clear
that he was very hungry. She let him have his supper and took
him home to his owner.
Ms. Mightley, who was delighted to have her pet safely back
home, rewarded Brutus’ saviour with a big homemade cake.

Maybe Henry Ford was responsible for the development of
the car in the US but, contrary to popular belief, he did not produce the first American automobile. This distinction goes to
the Duryea brothers – Charles and Frank – who created their
first gasoline-powered ”horseless-carriage” in 1893. The Duryea brothers were bicycle mechanics with a passion for innovation. They built their first car in a workshop located in a building in downtown Springfield, Massachusetts. Their new invention was rolled onto the streets of the city center for testing
in September 1893. It had a one-cylinder, gasoline engine and
a three-speed transmission fixed to a used horse carriage. It could reach a speed of 7.5 miles per hour.
The following year, Frank developed a second car with a more powerful two-cylinder engine. It was this car that he drove
in America’s first automobile race on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1895. The race was sponsored by the Chicago TimesHerald and ran a 54-mile course from downtown Chicago to
Evanston, Illinois, and back. Initially, the date was set for November 2, but only Duryea and one other car were ready to
start, so the race was put off until Thanksgiving Day, four weeks later. It was snowing all night before the race, and of nearly one hundred drivers who had declared their interest, only
six cars lined up for the start on the day of the race. In addition
to Duryea, there were five other participants.
The race started in the early morning in snowy conditions.
The command ‘go’ was given at 8:55 and the Duryea was the
first car away. Initially, the machine went really well over the
soft snow, but when they came to the busier part of the city, ice
and holes in the street made it difficult to control the car. But
they were still leading the race until the left front wheel hit something and the steering wheel broke off. Frank lost some preR

People lie for various reasons: to show off, to pretend they’re
better or cleverer, or to avoid responsibility. If you do something
wrong, lying may seem the easiest way out. But then you have to
lie again to cover up the first lie, and so one lie leads to another.
And when you eventually get caught, how easy is it for others to
trust you again?

I think there are only certain times when it’s ok to lie. For instance, if you are trying to protect someone or to spare someone’s feelings. Some doctors and psychologists believe it’s sometimes better to lie to a patient about how serious their illness is.
I’m not sure I agree, but I can see the reason. It’s called a white
lie, isn’t it?

The entire family was ecstatic with the announcement of Erica’s engagement to her long-term boyfriend Nick. It was even
more exciting as Erica’s grandma had just moved back to the family home, which meant she could attend the wedding. Nick’s
family was equally overjoyed and supportive. His mother gave
him an old family diamond ring for the engagement.
Erica became so busy with wedding preparations that her younger sister Sheila offered to do a few things for her. Erica couldn’t be more grateful. She asked Sheila to take the engagement
ring to the jewellers to have it cleaned. Sheila wasn’t sure she
wanted to be responsible for something so expensive, but seeing

how stressed poor Erica was, she said OK. Carefully, she wrapped the ring in a tissue, placed it in her handbag and went to
the jeweller. But when she opened her bag – the ring was gone.
She frantically searched the bag, even emptying it all over the
counter – all in vain!
Sheila ran out of the shop in a hysterical panic, reached her
car, collapsed into the seat and burst into tears. She was completely devastated. All the way home, she thought about how
to break the news to Erica.
When she arrived, Sheila found Grandmother sitting at the
kitchen table. Grandma’s memory had been getting worse lately and she’d got into a habit of misplacing things like putting
her purse in the fridge or her phone in a shower.
In a split second Sheila made up her mind. She went to Erica’s room and told her how she’d been showing the ring to Grandma and while her back was turned, Grandma took the ring
and hid it somewhere. Both girls spent the next two hours searching the house from top to bottom.
Erica was completely shattered, but Nick proved very understanding. He even arranged an exact copy to be made to replace the missing ring, in part for Erica but mostly so that he
wouldn’t have to tell his mother what happened.
The wedding went smoothly, and Erica and Nick turned out
a well-matched couple.
Sheila lived with a guilty conscience and it took her years to
gather enough courage to reveal the truth.

Es sind einfach Momente, solche Augenblicke, wo ich mich
plötzlich fühle, als ob ich im siebten Himmel wäre. Ich könnte
dann schreien, vor Freude springen, alle in der Nähe umarmen.
Es dauert aber ganz kurz, die Euphorie geht vorbei und alles
bleibt bei altem. Ich bin mir aber sicher, dass ich während dieser
kurzen Momente glücklich bin. Es ist so eine starke innere Kraft
und Sicherheit, dass ich das große Los gezogen habe. Letztens
fühlte ich mich so nach der bestandenen Fahrprüfung. Alle haben
mich gewarnt, dass es nie beim ersten Mal gelingt und dann hörte
ich ein paar magische Worte „ Ich gratuliere Ihnen zu der
einwandfrei bestandenen Fahrprüfung.“ Ich war wirklich
überglücklich und so stolz auf mich selbst.

frei und kräftig. Nach jedem Training bin ich wie ein Neugeborener, glaube die Berge versetzen zu können, bin so energievoll.
Die Voraussetzung für das Glück ist ein gesunder gepflegter
Körper und viel Bewegung. Da ich mich täglich intensiv bewege, bin ich ein ziemlich glücklicher Mensch, nicht wahr?

Ich bin glücklich, wenn ich eine gute Note bekomme, wenn
meine Großeltern zu Besuch kommen und mir immer etwas
schenken, wenn meine Eltern Zeit für mich finden und wenn wir
abends zusammen „ Mensch ärgere dich nicht“ oder Monopoly
spielen. Und ich gewinne natürlich. Ich bin überglücklich, wenn
ich auf Partys gehe oder mit Freundinnen die Eisdiele um die

ausgehe, kann ich mich nicht so richtig freuen, weil ich die ganze
Zeit an meine Ehegattin und Töchterlein denke und sie so sehr
vermisse. Ich hänge sehr an den beiden und nur mit ihnen
empfinde ich das absolute Glück.
Ich bin eine sehr anspruchsvolle Person, die nie zufrieden ist
und immer nach neuen Herausforderungen sucht. Um ehrlich
zu sein, muss ich erklären, dass für mich Glück nichts Positives
bedeutet. Glück als solches ist unproduktiv, bringt die Menschen

Das passiert mir selten und hängt vor allem mit meinem
Privatleben zusammen. Ich bin nur glücklich, wenn ich zusammen
mit meiner Familie sein kann. Und da ich jetzt im Ausland arbeiten
muss, sehe ich meine Frau und meine dreijährige Tochter selten.
Höchstens dreimal im Jahr. Ohne die beiden kann ich mein Leben

erfüllen und immer die tollsten Klamotten und Spielsachen
kaufen. Die Sommerferien verbrachten wir eher im eigenen
Garten oder …..5.2……… als im Ausland und natürlich musste
ich mein Zimmer mit meinen zwei Brüdern teilen. Je größer wir
wurden, desto häufiger gab es Streit. Ich träumte von einem
Eckchen nur für mich, wo ich richtig abschalten konnte, aber es
blieb nur beim Träumen. Wir konnten uns keine größere Wohnung
leisten. Ich bewundere meine Eltern wirklich. Sie haben sich

es manchmal vorne und ….5.3……., bekam ich von ihnen Liebe,
Geborgenheit und Zuneigung. Niemand von uns wurde
bevorzugt, alle Kinder hatten ihre Hauspf lichten und alle
mussten das Abitur ablegen. Meine Eltern hielten die Ausbildung
für das Allerwichtigste. Vielleicht resultierte es daraus, dass
sie selbst ….5.4……. Wir, ihre Nachkommen,sollten ihre Träume
in Erfüllung bringen, um es einmal besser im Leben zu haben
als sie. ……..5.5……….. Wir haben alle fünf studiert, meine älteste
Schwester ist eine berühmte Schriftstellerin, mein jüngster
Bruder unterrichtet an einem Gymnasium und ich arbeite für
ein Forschungsinstitut in Paris und suche nach neuen Planeten.
Das Leben in einer kinderreichen Familie ist viel schwieriger
als in einer mit zwei Kindern, aber es bedeutet nicht, dass man
deswegen kleinere Chancen hat. Ich bin das beste Beispiel dafür,
dass man viel erreichen kann. In meinem Haus gab es vielleicht
nicht immer Geld, aber an familiärer Wärme ……5.6.………. und
das ist der wichtigste Schlüssel zum Erfolg. Darauf können

Laut der letzten Umfrage greifen immer jüngere Kinder zum
Alkohol. Über die Hälfte der Fünfzehnjährigen hat es schon
einmal probiert. Die Ursachen sind banal. Die Befragten nennen
vor allem Neugier oder Gruppendruck. Es ist auch normal,
dass Alkohol wie Bier auf den Feten erscheint. Oft bringen ihn
ältere Bekannten mit und die Jüngeren wollen sich doch von
der Gesellschaft nicht unterscheiden und nehmen einen Schluck.
Drei Viertel dieser Jugendlichen hören dann mit dem Trinken
auf oder trinken gelegentlich, wenn es Geburtstag oder
Silvesterfeier gibt. Für einige enden solche Versuche mit einer
Entzugstherapie. Es gibt Alkoholiker schon unter den
Minderjährigen. Über die Folgen vom Alkoholkonsum sind die
Jugendlichen ganz gut aufgeklärt. Alle wissen über die
gesundheitlichen Probleme, wie Magenkrebs, Leberzirrhose
oder Kreislaufstörungen. Sie sind sich auch im Klaren, dass
Alkohol die Gehirnzellen zerstört und die Fruchtbarkeit
beeinträchtigt. Die Mädchen sind sich dessen bewusst, dass
der Alkohol während der Schwangerschaft nicht erlaubt sein
darf und das Leben des Ungeborenen gefährdet. Leider scheint
diese Tatsache nicht alle zukünftigen Teen-Mutter abzuschrecken.
Die Mediziner schlagen Alarm. Je früher man mit Alkohol
beginnt, desto größere Schäden treten auf. Die Eltern müssten

Es ist die Erntezeit für die Bauern. Wenn es große Hitzewellen
gibt, sehnen sich alle nach Schatten und sind durstig, weil der
Körper schwitzt. Man muss auch besonders darauf achten, den
Kopf vor Hitze zu schützen, sonst kann es leicht zu einem
Sonnenstich kommen.

sonnen, baden oder die Küste entlangspazieren. Manche sammeln

Auf den Campingplätzen ist es voll. Das Zelten gehört jetzt zu
den Hauptattraktionen.
Zadanie 2.
Neulich habe ich einen interessanten Film gesehen, sein Titel
lautet: „Gegen die Wand“. Der deutsch-türkische Regisseur Fatih
Akin setzt sich in diesem Film mit der Frage nach Identität und
Zugehörigkeitsgefühl der Deutschtürken auseinander. Die
Haupthelden, beide nach einem misslungenen Suizidversuch,
schließen eine Scheinehe. Für Sibel, ein Mädchen aus einer
traditionellen türkischen Familie, ist die Ehe die letzte Rettung,
um endlich frei und ungebunden leben zu können. Für Cahit,
einen 40-jährigen Alkoholiker, bedeutet sie einen Hauch von
Normalität, warmes Essen auf dem Tisch, jemanden zum Reden.
Im Laufe der Zeit entdeckt man als Zuschauer immer tiefere
Aspekte der Geschichte. Die Geschichte fesselt, bringt zum
Weinen, empört, hinterlässt einen nicht gleichgültig. Mich hat
auch die wunderbare Musik – teilweise Depeche Mode, teilweise
Volksmusik aus der Türkei – bezaubert. Diese Verbindung passt
genial zu der Thematik des Filmes, wo das Moderne mit der
Tradition einerseits gegeneinander kämpfen, andererseits
ohneeinander zugrunde gehen müssen.
Es wundert mich überhaupt nicht, dass der Film ein absoluter
Hit war und schon während der ersten Wochenenden in den
Kinos fast eine halbe Million Euro eingespielt hat. Er hat es auch
verdient, den Goldenen Bären bei der Berlinale 2004 zu gewinnen.
Natürlich folgten dieser Auszeichnung andere Preise in ganz
Europa. Dank diesem Film glaube ich, die Situation der türkischen
Minderheit in Deutschland besser verstehen zu können. Ich
empfehle ihn allen Kinofans.

Schummeln die Schüler immer noch? Lohnt es sich?
Schummeln sollte strengstens bestraft werden so wie z. B. in
den USA. Und es sollte für alle klar sein, dass Schummeln
schlecht ist und nichts bringt – außer beim Ertapptwerden
