International attractiveness
The internationally focused University of Cologne looks back on a long tradition; its attractiveness for students remains
unbroken. The University is regularly set at the top of German applicants‘ wish lists for a university place. About ten percent
of its students come from abroad, positioning it in the peak bracket of all German universities. The steadily growing numbers

Advantages as a research location
The success of an academic establishment is also influenced by surrounding institutions. Ideally, Cologne is home to three
major research centres (Forschungszentrum Jülich, the German Aerospace Center in Porz, and the Society for Mathematics
and Data Processing in St. Augustin) as well as three Max Planck Institutes (for Plant Breeding Research, for Neurological
Research, and for the Study of Societies), all of which engage in close exchanges with the University‘s researchers.

Enger Austausch mit der Wirtschaft
Zahlreiche Drittmittelprojekte, von der Versicherungsforschung bis hin zu molekularen Grundlagenforschung, geben Impulse
in die regionale und überregionale Wirtschaft. Die Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaftliche Fakultät ist Mitglied des CEMS

Numerous third-party funded projects, ranging from the study of insurance to molecular basic research, give fresh impetus
to the regional and supra-regional economy. The Management, Economics and Social Sciences Faculty is a member of the
Community of European Management Schools (CEMS) and thus ranks among Europe‘s most prominent economics faculties.

The Cologne Master Program in Political Science consists of four subareas: European Studies, Comparative Politics, Political
Theory and History of Political Ideas and finally International Relations. Each student may choose courses from these areas, thus
setting individual priorities for deepening the individual academic learning process. As a regular element, in each semester a
substantial number of English-speaking courses as well as innovative forms of teaching in simulation games and journeys to

As of the academic year 2011/2012, the WiSo-Faculty will offer a double degree in European Studies together with the Faculty
of Arts and Sciences of Maastricht University. This double degree agreement will make it possible for students to obtain two
separate master’s degrees in European Studies from each of the two universities.
Additionally, Research Projects are also organized in each of the thematic subareas; a Master Colloquium will accompany and
support students in their final examination phase.

The Department of Political Science offers a number of innovative forms of teaching and learning. The E-Learning platform ILIAS
has been developed at this institute and is now used by almost all German universities. Additionally, simulation seminars are
held on negotiations and proceedings in the EU system in cooperation with law students (PROTEUS), while the seminar ‘Europe
at Work’ brings students into contact with political and administrative decision-makers in Brussels and Berlin. In the framework
of the Theseus Programme, guest professors from the leading French university institution ‘Sciences Po’ at Paris offer courses in
English language to the Cologne students.

Aus jedem Teilgebiet gibt es weiterhin ein Modul Forschungsprojekt; ein Modul Master Kolloquium begleitet und unterstützt
die Studierenden während der Erstellung ihrer Abschlussarbeit. Die Kölner Politikwissenschaft bietet in ihren Veranstaltungen eine Reihe innovativer Formen der Lehre. Neben der Nutzung
der am Institut entwickelten E-Learning Plattforme ILIAS werden regelmäßig Simulationsseminare zu Recht und Politik des
EU-Systems (PROTEUS) gemeinsam mit Studierenden der Rechtswissenschaften angeboten. In der Veranstaltung „Europe at
Work“ kommen Studierende in unmittelbaren Kontakt mit politischen und administrativen Entscheidungsträgern in Brüssel
und Berlin. Im Rahmen der Theseus-Gastprofessur bieten Professoren der französischen Spitzenuniversität Science Po seit
mehreren Jahren englischsprachige Lehrveranstaltungen an.
Der nahezu frei wählbare Minor dient einer weiteren punktuellen Profilierung des Studiums – entweder vertiefend und spezialisierend oder mehr diversifizierend. Derzeit werden über 30 Minor aus allen Disziplinen der WiSo-Fakultät angeboten. Hierzu
gehören u.a. Accounting, Corporate Development, Finance, Marketing, Advanced Economics, Bank Management, Controlling,
Energiewirtschaftslehre, Gesundheitsökonomie, Soziologie und empirische Sozialforschung, Statistik, Medienmanagement,
Verkehr und Logistik, Wirtschafts- und Sozialpsychologie, Wirtschaftspolitik und öffentliche Finanzen.
Students are free to combine their major with nearly every minor offered in order to sharpen their profile by either further specializing or by diversifying their study focus. The WiSo-Faculty offers more than 30 minors from all disciplines, e.g.: Accounting,

The Master in Political Science opens doors into different directions. Cologne students find jobs in the media business, in
political institutions, in parties or civil society organizations. Jobs are available particularly at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
the European institutions or Broadcasting corporations. But students may also choose academic research in or outside the University system. Cologne hosts a unique mixture and combination of postgraduate and PhD studies, such as Graduate Schools,
Research Schools and Networks of Excellence.
