Following exhibitions centred on wide-ranging art and
cultural history observations relating to the themes of the
Forest (2011/12), the Concept of Man (2012/13) and the
Animal (2013/14), the equally broad significance of the
flowing, resp. fleeting elements now shifts to the focus of a
collection exhibition at Kunsthalle Würth.

Water, clouds and wind in their myriad manifestations
determine the climate of our planet earth and form part of
our everyday lives. They have fascinated man and also been
reflected in his art since time immemorial.
Water is a key element in the history of mankind. Thanks
to it multifarious forms (spring water, stream, river, ocean,
but also as swamp, sea spray or a still lake) water has found
rich expressive forms in the formation of symbols: in
mythology, religion, philosophy, art and psychology. It is
closely linked with concepts of creation and destruction, life
and death, fertility and transience, as well as with the
unconscious.
The works in the Würth Collection contain a great diversity
of references to this natural phenomenon, impressively
expressed across all epochs and in different materials. We
can therefore present a particularly varied exhibition of art
from the Middle Ages to the present day, complemented by
several works on loan. The arc ranges from the depiction of
the primal element water – be it as the origin of all life in
the painting Die Quelle (The Source) by Dieter Hacker, or
pointing to amniotic fluid in the installation Chromosome by
Antony Gormley – to the reproduction of coastal and river
landscape since the 19th century, to the invention of submarine worlds such as are to be found in Peter Pongratz or in
the current works of Jürgen Schmidt. Moreover, its different
aggregate states, from solid to fluid to gas form, are reflected

in the countless artistic engagements with it by artists from
Philipp Bauknecht to Johannes Gervé.
Both the wind, possibly manifest as a whirlwind or an
uncanny doldrums, and the clouds, with their constantly
changing forms and their fleetingness, interact with water.
These phenomena, which are pleasant yet also ominous,
inspire the myths, literary texts and artworks of all regions
and epochs. They range from the ancient idea of God
appearing in a cloud, to the omniscient internet and its
particular clouds that see everything and forget nothing.
The Salvator Mundi of a Bavarian Master active around
1500, who rules the world from the clouds, and very topical
positons by young artists will be joined by masters of
Classical Modernism such as Max Liebermann, Edvard
Munch, Emil Nolde and others. Also represented in the
exhibition are Karl Horst Hödicke, Alex Katz, Anselm
Kiefer, Bernd Koberling, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Longo,
Gerhard Richter, and many more. Through more than 200
works, therefore, the exhibition WWW – Wasser, Wolken,
Wind follows the impressive strategies developed by artists
over the centuries so as to render the world of the flowing
resp. fleeting elements visible, while at the same time taking
the viewer on an exciting journey of discovery.

Im Anfang schuf Gott Himmel und Erde;
die Erde aber war wüst und wirr,
Finsternis lag über der Urflut und Gottes Geist
schwebte über dem Wasser. (Gen 1, 1–2).
Nach breit angelegten kunst- und kulturhistorischen
Betrachtungen zu den Themen Wald (2011/12), Menschenbild (2012/13) und Tier (2013/14) rückt nun das nicht
minder große Bedeutungsspektrum der fließenden beziehungsweise flüchtigen Elemente ins Zentrum einer Sammlungsausstellung in der Kunsthalle Würth.

Sie bestimmen das Klima unseres Planeten Erde und
gehören zu unserem Alltag: Wasser, Wolken und Wind in
all ihren Ausprägungen. Seit Urzeiten faszinieren sie den
Menschen und finden auch Niederschlag in der Kunst.
Wasser ist ein Schlüsselelement der Menschheitsgeschichte.
Dank seiner vielfältigen Erscheinungsformen (als Quellwasser, Fluss, Strom, Ozean, aber auch im Sumpf, als Gischt
oder stiller See) fand das Wasser in der Symbolbildung
einen reichen Ausdruck: in Mythologie, Religion, Philosophie, Kunst und Psychologie. Es ist eng mit Begriffen wie
Schöpfung und Vernichtung, Leben und Tod, Fruchtbarkeit
und Vergänglichkeit sowie mit dem Unterbewussten
verbunden.
In den Werken der Sammlung Würth findet sich eine
Vielzahl an Bezügen auf dieses Naturphänomen, quer
durch alle Epochen und in verschiedenen Materialien
eindrucksvoll umgesetzt. So können wir eine beeindruckend vielfältige, durch einige Leihgaben ergänzte Ausstellung mit Kunst vom Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart
präsentieren. Dabei spannt sich der Bogen von der Darstellung des Urelements Wasser – sei es als Ursprung allen
Lebens im Gemälde Die Quelle von Dieter Hacker, sei es in
der Installation Chromosome von Antony Gormley, die auf
das Fruchtwasser verweist – über die Wiedergabe von
Küsten- und Flusslandschaften seit dem 19. Jahrhundert bis
hin zur Schaffung von submarinen Welten, wie wir sie bei
Peter Pongratz oder in aktuellen Arbeiten von Jürgen
Schmidt finden. Auch die unterschiedlichen Aggregatzustände von fest, flüssig und gasförmig spiegeln sich in den
zahlreichen künstlerischen Auseinandersetzungen von
Philipp Bauknecht bis Johannes Gervé.
In Wechselwirkung mit dem Wasser stehen der Wind in
seinen Erscheinungsformen, die sich als Wirbelwind wie in
der unheimlichen Windstille äußern können, und auch die
Wolken mit ihrem ständigen Gestaltwechsel und ihrer
Flüchtigkeit. Wohltuend und doch auch unheilbringend,
inspirieren diese Phänomene die Mythen, literarischen
Texte und Kunstwerke jeder Region und jeder Epoche.
Diese reichen von der antiken Vorstellung der Erscheinungsweise Gottes in einer Wolke bis hin zum allwissenden
Internet und seinen Clouds, welche alles sehen und nichts
vergessen.
Zu dem Salvator mundi eines um 1500 tätigen bayerischen
Meisters, der die Welt aus den Wolken heraus regiert, und
ganz aktuellen Positionen junger Künstler treten jene von
Meistern der klassischen Moderne wie Max Liebermann,
Edvard Munch, Emil Nolde und zahlreichen weiteren.
Vertreten sind darüber hinaus unter anderem Karl Horst
Hödicke, Alex Katz, Anselm Kiefer, Bernd Koberling, Roy
Lichtenstein, Robert Longo und Gerhard Richter. So folgt
die Ausstellung WWW – Wasser, Wolken, Wind in über
200 Werken den beeindruckenden Strategien, die Künstler
im Laufe der Jahrhunderte entwickelten, um die Welt der
fließenden beziehungsweise flüchtigen Elemente sichtbar zu
machen, und nimmt den Betrachter mit auf eine spannende
Entdeckungstour.
Zur Ausstellung erscheint ein Katalog im Swiridoff Verlag.
