August 8, 2006.
Over 300,000 guests from all over the world
have visited the museum since its opening
in 2005. In addition to the permanent exhibit, four special exhibitions focused on
new and particular aspects of current and

mit Stolz blickt das Deutsche Auswandererhaus auf die
ersten 14 Monate seit der Eröffnung zurück. Mehr als
300.000 Besucher aus der ganzen Welt hat das Museum
begrüßt. Vier Ausstellungen und ein großes Veranstaltungsprogramm haben das lebendige und internationale
Haus bereichert. Mein herzlichster Dank gilt allen Besuchern, Unterstützern und den vielen engagierten Mitarbeitern. Ich freue mich auf das kommende Jahr!

Schon bei der Eröffnung 2005 war „Fettes Brot“ in Bremerhaven dabei. /
The highlight of the evening was a concert featuring Fettes Brot.
The rock band from Hamburg, which held a concert in honor of the

Am 27. Januar 2006 wurde die erste große Sonderausstellung „Pacific Palisades – Wege deutschsprachiger Schriftsteller ins kalifornische Exil 1932–1941“
des Deutschen Auswandererhauses von Kulturstaatsminister Bernd Neumann eröffnet.
Die Ausstellung folgt den Spuren von zehn
Autoren auf ihren Wegen von Europa in die
USA. Thomas Mann, Vicki Baum, Bertolt
Brecht, Theodor W. Adorno und andere
stehen stellvertretend für Schriftsteller, die
während des Nazi-Regimes aus Deutschland aufgrund ihrer politischen Anschauungen oder ihrer jüdischen Herkunft fl iehen mussten, um ihr Leben zu retten oder
ihre Freiheit zu bewahren. In Erwartung
einer baldigen Rückkehr ließ sich der Großteil der Autoren zunächst in europäischen
Nachbarländern nieder. Südfrankreich
wurde für viele deutschsprachige Literaten
zur zweiten „Heimat“. Kaum einer von ihnen hatte bei der Ausreise an einen längeren Aufenthalt außerhalb Deutschlands
gedacht, aber viele kehrten nie wieder zurück. Der Vormarsch deutscher Truppen in
Europa zwang die Literaten zur erneuten
Flucht, die für viele in „Pacific Palisades“,

Briefen und Werken spiegeln sich Entscheidungs- und Ablösungsprozesse, Lebensund Arbeitsbedingungen der Schriftsteller
sowie ihre Auseinandersetzung mit der politischen und gesellschaftlichen Entwicklung in Deutschland wider.

In der Publikationsreihe „edition DAH“ ist der Katalog „Pacific
Palisades – Wege deutschsprachiger Schriftsteller ins kalifornische Exil
1932–1941“ begleitend zur gleichnamigen Sonderausstellung
erschienen. Das Buch enthält Informationen zu Auswanderung und
Flucht aus Deutschland in den Jahren 1933–1945, Hintergründe zur
Flucht und kalifornischem Exil der Autoren und eine Zusammenstellung von Auszügen aus ihren Werken.

contains text information on emigration from Germany from 19331945, background articles on the writers who escaped Nazi Germany,

The first major special exhibition at the German Emigration Center featured Pacific Palisades—German-Language Writers on the Road to Exile in California 1932-1941
and was opened by the Minister of State for Cultural
Affairs, Bernd Neumann, on January 27, 2006.
This special exhibition focuses on 10 German-language writers who fled Europe to
make their new home in the U.S.A. Due
either to their political convictions or their
Jewish roots, Thomas Mann, Vicki Baum,
Bertolt Brecht and Theodor W. Adorno are
representative of those forced to leave Germany once the Nazi regime came into power
in order to preserve their personal freedom
or even to save their lives. Believing that they
would soon be able to return to their native
country, the majority of these writers first
settled in neighboring European countries.
The South of France became a second “home“
for many. Whereas hardly any of these German-language writers seriously considered
the harsh reality of living in exile for an extended period of time, the sad truth is that
many were never able to return. German
troops were fast advancing throughout Europe forcing those in exile to flee yet again.
Pacific Palisades, in the hills north of Los
Angeles, soon became home to many exiled
German-language writers.
Personal diaries and journals, documents,
letters and literary works reflect these crucial years, revealing decisions and the painful process of separation, unusual living and
working conditions in exile, experiences with
and related to the English language, and of
course, their own intensive grapple with the
events and incidents occurring in Germany.
The contents of this exhibition were carefully compiled and prepared in cooperation
with the Buddenbrookhaus in Lübeck.
Die zweite Sonderausstellung
„Augustus F. Sherman: Ellis
Island Portraits 1905–1920“,
vom 10. März bis zum 14. Mai
2006 im Deutschen Auswandererhaus zu sehen, zeigte
Portrait- und Gruppenfotos
von Einwanderern kurz nach
ihrer Ankunft auf Ellis Island.
Auf Ellis Island, auch
„Insel der Tränen“ genannt, befand sich seit
1892 die größte Einwandererstation der USA. Ärzte
und Beamte überprüften die Immigranten
amtlich und gesundheitlich, bevor diese einreisen durften.
Einigen Einwanderern wurde aufgrund
von Krankheiten oder finanziellen Schwierigkeiten die Einreise in die USA verweigert und sie wurden zurück nach Europa
geschickt. Die bange Frage, die sich alle
Einwanderer stellten: Werde ich einreisen
können?
Augustus F. Sherman, Einwanderungsbeamter auf Ellis Island, hat mehr als 200 Familien, Gruppen und Individuen in ihren
landesüblichen Trachten und Berufsbekleidungen fotografiert. 75 Aufnahmen des
Hobbyfotografen waren in der Ausstellung
zu sehen. Sie zeigten die Vielfalt und Fülle
der kulturellen Herkunft der Emigranten,
in deren Gesichtern sich die Strapazen der
langen Reise, Ungewissheit, aber auch die
Hoffnung auf ein besseres Leben widerspiegeln.
Nach der Präsentation der Ausstellung im Ellis Island Immigration Museum, New York,
folgte als erste Station in Europa das Deutsche Auswandererhaus in Bremerhaven.
Zur Finissage am 14. Mai wurden bei einer
Sonderführung Interviews mit Zeitzeugen,
die über Ellis Island angewandert sind oder
dort arbeiteten, vorgelesen.
In diesem und im kommenden Jahr wird die
Ausstellung an vier weiteren Stationen in
Europa (u.a. Paris, Frankreich) zu sehen
sein, bevor sie wieder zurück nach Amerika geht.

Island Portraits
1905–1920, featured portraits
and group photographs of immigrants shortly after
their arrival at Ellis
Island and ran from March 10 through May 14, 2006.
As of 1892, Ellis Island, also known as the
“island of tears,“ was the largest receiving station for immigrants in the U.S.A.
where doctors and immigration inspectors
checked incoming immigrants prior to approving, or rejecting, their entry into the
United States.
Some passengers who disembarked at Ellis Island were rejected if they showed
any sign of contagious diseases or lacked
fi nancial means, and were deported back
to Europe. Every immigrant lived in fear
of being rejected until all official steps had
been completed.
Augustus F. Sherman was not a photographer
but an immigration inspector who worked at

Ellis Island. His oeuvre comprises over 200
photographs of families, groups and individuals in native dress or traditional trade
outfits; 75 of these photographs were exhibited at the German Emigration Center. They
reflect the variety and abundance of cultural
backgrounds characterizing the immigrants.
Their faces mirror the hardships of the long
journey they have untertaken, yet their eyes
are aglow with the hope of a better life in the
New World.
After its premiere at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum in New York, the exhibition
travelled to its fi rst destination in Europe,
the German Emigration Center in Bremerhaven. During a special tour on the last day
of its showing—May 14—interviews with
contemporary witnesses who either immigrated via Ellis Island or worked there, were
read aloud.
The exhibition travels to four other cities
in Europe (among them Paris, France) in
2006 / 2007 before returning to the U.S.

Als Public-Private-Partnership-Projekt
wurde am 17. Januar 2006 die Stiftung
Deutsches Auswandererhaus von dem Initiativkreis Erlebniswelt Auswanderung e.V.,
Vertretern der Bremerhavener Wirtschaft,
der Stadt Bremerhaven und von paysage
house 1, der Betreibergesellschaft des Deutschen Auswandererhauses gegründet. Darüber hinaus konnten mit Michael Ballhaus
und Prof. Dr. Barbara Vinken zwei international renommierte Persönlichkeiten für
den Stiftungsrat gewonnen werden. Dr. Elisabeth v. Hagenow (Hamburg) und
Hans-Peter Schlicher (Bremerhaven) wurden von den Stiftern zum
Vorstand berufen.
SOCCER AND MIGRATION:
NATIONAL TEAMS AT THE WORLD CUP 2006
On June 9, opening day of the World Cup
in Germany this past summer, a special
exhibition combining soccer and migration opened at the German Emigration Center, focusing on the 32 participating teams
and their players as well as on facts and
figures about each country, fascinating,
exciting and sometimes peculiar stories as
well. For example: Who would‘ve thought
that soccer came to Brazil via German and
English emigrants? In a nation shaped by
immigration, how many nationalities play
on the U.S. soccer team? Why is the English
third-league player Chris Birchall the fi rst
white person to play for the smallest team
participating in the World Cup, Trinidad &
Tobago? What countries participated in the
World Cup 2006 for the fi rst time and what
political backgrounds shape them? What
meaning do sports and athletics have in
poorer countries?
This exhibition inside the museum‘s permanent exhibition ran until August 6, 2006.

The foundation‘s tasks include acquiring
exhibits and collections related to emigration, expanding and updating research
data in the database and the archives, and
endorsing conferences and exhibitions dedicated to the scientific study of migration during the
19th and 20th centuries as well
as current migratory movements.
Furthermore, the foundation sees
it as its task to promote student
exchange among the countries
of Europe and overseas and
to award research grants as a
means of strenghtening and
reinforcing the museum´s research work.

On the occasion of the donation of Felix
Schlesinger‘s oil painting The Passport and
Police Dispatch Prior to Emigration by the
Initiativkreis Erlebniswelt Auswanderung
e.V., the German Emigration Center opened
the exhibition “The History of a Painting“
on October 1, 2006.
Felix Schlesinger‘s painting from 1833 is
in the tradition of genre painting, a style
which developed in Germany during the
Biedermeier period and was popular with
the bourgeoisie, or middle class, as it depicted scenes of everyday life among ordinary people. In addition to the Schlesinger
painting the exhibition features other objects from the German Emigration Center‘s
collection covering a period from 1852–1980.
These include rare passports and immigration/emigration documents from various
periods. The exhibition runs until January
28, 2007. In addition, on the first Wednesday
of each month there is a guided tour of the
exhibition and an introduction to carrying
out family research.

Anlässlich der Donation des Gemäldes „In
der Paß- und Polizeistube vor der Emigration” von Felix Schlesinger aus dem Jahr
1859 durch den Initiativkreis Erlebniswelt
Auswanderung e.V. eröffnete das Deutsche
Auswandererhaus am 1. Oktober 2006 die
Ausstellung „Geschichte eines Bildes“.
Das Werk des 1833 geborenen Felix Schlesingers entstand in der Tradition der Düsseldorfer Genremalerei, die sich mit dem
Alltag der breiten Bevölkerung auseinandersetzte. Neben dem Gemälde werden erstmals besondere Exponate aus der Sam mlung des Deutschen Auswandererhauses

FUSSBALL UND MIGRATION:
DIE NATIONALMANNSCHAFTEN DER WM 2006
Pünktlich zum Start der Weltmeisterschaft
in Deutschland wurde am 9. Juni eine Sonderausstellung zum Thema Fußball und
Migration eröffnet. Im Fokus standen die
32 teilnehmenden Mannschaften und deren
Spieler sowie die unterschiedlichsten Geschichten der Teilnehmerstaaten. Mit spannenden, ernsten und skurrilen Geschichten
konnte der Besucher seinen Wissensschatz
erweitern: Wer hätte gedacht, dass der brasilianische Fußball von deutschen und englischen Einwanderern eingeführt wurde?
Wie spiegelt sich in der US-amerikanischen
Nationalmannschaft die Geschichte des
Landes als klassisches Einwanderungsland
wider? Wie kam es dazu, dass der englische
Drittliga-Spieler Chris Birchall als erster Weißer für das kleinste teilnehmende
Land Trinidad and Tobago startete? Welche Länder nehmen 2006 zum ersten Mal
an der Weltmeisterschaft teil und welche
politischen Hintergründe stehen dahinter?
Welche Bedeutung hat der Sport gerade in
den ärmeren Ländern?
Die Ausstellung war bis zum 6. August 2006
in der Dauerausstellung des Deutschen
Auswandererhauses zu sehen.

Darüber hinaus wird die Stiftung Projekte, Tagungen und Sonderveranstaltungen fördern, die sich mit der Thematik des Hauses – die Auswanderung des
19. und 20. Jahrhunderts und aktuelle
Migrationsbewegungen – befassen. Der Austausch von Studenten aus den europäischen
Nachbarländern und Übersee und die Vergabe von Forschungsstipendien sind weitere
Aufgaben der Stiftung, um die Inhalte des
Deutschen Auswandererhauses auch wissenschaftlich zu verankern.
Auf Anregung des Deutschen Auswandererhauses wird die Stiftung u.a. aus der berühmten Gothaer Sammlung ein Konvolut
von Auswandererbriefen restaurieren lassen, deren Absender über Bremerhaven in
die USA emigriert sind. Die Briefe werden
im Anschluss in einer Kabinettausstellung
im Deutschen Auswandererhaus gezeigt.

For most Americans, a journey along the
paths of the emigrants in Bremerhaven is
like a journey back into one´s own personal
history, no matter what nationality you are.
The history of the city of Bremerhaven
is symbolic for the history of emigration.
Within a time span of 140 years some 7 million people came to Bremerhaven to leave
the continent for the United States. Those
emigrants who boarded in Bremerhaven
not only came from Germany, but from all
parts of Europe.
Especially between 1890 and 1922 some 3
million people from the multi-ethnic states
of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and
czarist Russia, emigrated through Bremerhaven.
Tailored for U.S. residents with ethnic
groups abroad, Lufthansa has launched a
new website: “We fly home.” It accommodates specific ethnic groups with its simplicity, foreign language choices and special offers. Among these ethnic groups are
Russians, Polish, Hungarians and Czechs
all who once left their “home” and used
Bremerhaven as their gateway to The New
World.
What made these people travel, sometimes
for weeks, to emigrate through Bremerhaven? As all shipping companies the North
German Lloyd had an extensive agent network, which extended far into Russia and
included countries such as Galicia and
Bosnia. These agents naturally promoted
their shipping company for the emigrant
crossing. Biographies are the main focus
of the German Emigration Center and are
the lynchpin of the exhibition. The visitors
take part in the emigrants’ life stories, understand why they left their homes and can
conceive what they went through during
their crossing.
This unique museum not only relates German history, it also tells European history
and is an enriching experience for young
and old of any nationality. To accommodate

Germany will take you from Hamburg to Bremerhaven in approximately 1 ½ hours and from Bremen in only ½ hour. From Bremen you also have
the option of travelling to Bremerhaven by boat

Diesen Reim schrieb eine Freundin 1927 in
Hilde Schockens Poesiealbum. Knapp zehn
Jahre später verlieh die Realität der freundlichen Erinnerung einen schalen Beigeschmack. Am 26. November 1938 legte das
Schiff „Portland“ in Bremen ab. An Bord
befanden sich die Geschwister Hilde und
Heinz Schocken. Die Emigration rettete
ihnen das Leben. Sie verließen das nationalsozialistische Deutschland und sollten
ihre Mutter Jeanette und Schwester Edith
niemals wieder sehen. Während Hilde und
Heinz am 4. Januar 1939 San Francisco
erreichten, wurden ihre Mutter und ihre
Schwester im November 1941 nach Minsk
deportiert. Der genaue Ort, an dem sie
schließlich ermordet wurden, ist bis heute
unbekannt geblieben.

Die Geschichte der Familie Schocken steht
exemplarisch für die Erfahrungen des
Leids und Terrors, die jüdische Familien im
Dritten Reich ertragen mussten. Jeanette
Schocken, geborene Pinthus, kam 1903
nach Bremerhaven, wo ihr Mann Joseph
mehrere Kaufhäuser besaß. Mit seinen drei
Kindern lebte das Ehepaar bis 1933 in der
Deichstraße 24, bevor die Familie 1933 in
die „Villa Schocken“ in die Wurster Straße
106 zog. Aus den glücklichen Kindertagen
stammt auch das Poesiealbum Hilde Schockens, das sich heute in der Sammlung des
Deutschen Auswandererhauses befindet.
Die Situation änderte sich mit dem Machtantritt der Nationalsozialisten. Juden wurden auch in Bremerhaven zunehmend terrorisiert. Vater Joseph starb im November
1934, und Jeanette übernahm mit ihrem
Schwiegersohn die Geschäftsleitung der
Kaufhäuser. In der Nacht vom 9. auf den
10. November 1938 brannten in Deutschland die Synagogen. Bremerhaven bildete
keine Ausnahme. Die Synagoge wurde
zerstört, Geschäfte und Häuser jüdischer
Mitbürger geplündert. Aus der alltäglichen
Schikanierung wurde eine systematische

Das Deutsche Auswandererhaus bietet Lehrern und Schülern aller Altersstufen das
Museum als außerschulischen Lernort an.
Ob durch eine Führung oder eine Rallye –
das Museum macht Geschichte erlebbar.
Für Grundschüler steht die sinnliche Wahrnehmung und das Veranschaulichen von
einzelnen Aspekten der historischen Auswanderung im 19. Jahrhundert per Schiff im
Vordergrund: Was hatten die Auswanderer
im Gepäck? Wie sahen die Überfahrtsbedingungen aus?
Der biographische Zugang zum Thema Auswanderung wird besonders für die Schüler
der Mittelstufe hervorgehoben. Jeder Schüler erhält mit der Eintrittskarte Zugang zu
den Daten über eine reale Person, die über
Bremerhaven ausgewandert ist, und begibt
sich auf deren Spuren. Auf diese Weise wird
den Schülern die Auswanderung anhand
eines Einzelfalls erfahrbar vermittelt.

können Lehrer vorab Vor- und Nachbereitungsmaterial bestellen. Dies ist auf die
unterschiedlichen Altersgruppen und Rahmenrichtlinien abgestimmt. Zusätzlich können ein Seminarraum für Gruppenarbeiten
und die technischen Medien für Recherchen
genutzt werden.
Schulklassen aus ganz Deutschland besuchten bisher die Ausstellung – aber
einen Streckenrekord stellten die Austauschschüler aus Französisch-Guyana
auf, die im Zuge eines Austausches mit einer Bremer Schule, zu Gast im Deutschen
Auswandererhaus waren.

For junior high school students the focus
is on the biographical aspect of emigration. The admission ticket provides access
to biographical data on a person who lived
and emigrated via Bremerhaven, thus tracing the path that person took from the Old
to the New World and rendering emigration
tangible.
High school students follow in the footsteps
of an emigrant, too, but at the end of the tour
they are asked questions aimed at illustrating various aspects of historic migration by
way of Bremerhaven in the 19th century up
through today such as what interest countries might have in accepting immigrants.
As a means of preparing students for a visit
to the museum teachers may order material
based on age group and interest focus in advance. In addition, conference rooms may be
booked for group work and electronic media
used for research work.
Up until now, school groups from all over
Germany have visited the exhibition and
been guests of the German Emigration Center, but in terms of distance the students from
French Guyana on an exchange program
with a school in Bremen, set the record.

Im Café und Restaurant „Speisesaal“ des
Deutschen Auswandererhauses wird das
Konzept des Museums verfolgt: Der Gast
begibt sich kulinarisch auf die Spur der
Auswanderer – von der norddeutschen Küche über ausgesuchte Auswanderergerichte
bis zu amerikanischen Köstlich keiten – gespeist wird in einer angenehmen Atmosphäre direkt am Neuen Hafen.
Für die Ausrichtung verschiedenster Veranstaltungen stehen Räumlichkeiten mit
Blick aufs Wasser zu Verfügung. Ob Tagung,
Seminar, Weihnachtsfeier, Firmenjubiläum
oder Familienfest – das Team des Deutschen
Auswandererhauses steht seinen Gästen bei
der Organisation und Durchführung stets
zur Seite.
Jens Skutnick ist der Küchenchef im „Speisesaal“. Auf Rügen aufgewachsen, sammelte
er u. a. bei der Deilmann Reederei auf dem
ehemaligen ZDF-Traumschiff MS Berlin und als Küchenleiter des Restaurants
Salomon´s in Bremen Erfahrung.
Das Café / Restaurant ist unabhängig
vom Ausstellungsbesuch täglich von 10
Uhr bis open-end geöffnet, warme Küche gibt es bis 23 Uhr. Sonntags gibt es

Emigration Center‘s concept in that guests
may trace the culinary path of emigrants,
choosing anything from North German spe-

cialties to favorite American dishes, in the
maritime atmosphere of the Neuer Hafen.
Separate rooms with waterfront views
are available for private parties or special events. The museum staff is happy to
help plan, organize and carry out meetings,
conventions, Christmas parties, company
events or family affairs.
Jens Skutnick, chef de cuisine at the
Speisesaal, grew up on the Baltic Sea island
of Rügen and has gathered professional
experience with the Deilmann Shipping
Company on board the legendary MS Berlin
and as chef de cuisine at the Bremen restaurant Salomon´s.
The café-restaurant works on a schedule
independent of museum hours and is open
daily from 10 A.M., serving hot meals until 11 P.M. The Speisesaal serves Sunday
brunch from 9 A.M. – 12 noon. As of 6 P.M.
the evening menu offers varying dishes.

“JUST FABULOUS!”
Während seines dreitägigen Antrittsbesuchs im Land Bremen besuchte der
amerikanische Botschafter William R.
Timken zusammen mit seiner Ehefrau
Sue und dem amerikanischen Generalkonsul aus Hamburg Duane C. Butcher
am 6. Juli 2006 das Deutsche Auswandererhaus.
Der Besuch war nicht nur offizieller Natur: Urgroßvater Henry Timken war 1838
mit seinem Vater und seinen sechs Geschwistern von Tarmstedt bei Bremen
nach New Orleans ausgewandert. William R. Timken konnte nun im Forum
Migration die Passagierlisten der Bark
Sophie einsehen, auf der seine Vorfahren nach Übersee fuhren. Der Botschafter war begeistert: „Just fabulous. Meine
hohen Erwartungen wurden noch übertroffen“, resümierte er am Ende seines
Besuchs. „Zu sehen, was mein Urgroßvater auf dieser Reise durchgemacht hat, ist
eine sehr emotionale Erfahrung.“

Jr. and his wife Sue visited the German
Emigration Center together with the U.S.
Consul General from Hamburg Duane C.
Butcher.
This was not a strictly official visit. Ambassador Timken‘s great-grandfather
Henry Timken emigrated as a boy together with his father and six siblings
from Tarmstedt near Bremen to New
Orleans in 1838. At Forum Migration,
William R. Timken was able to look at
the passenger manifest of the Sophie,
the barque his ancestors had made the
transatlantic crossing on. Needless to
say, the ambassador was thrilled and
commented at the end of his visit: “Just
fabulous. It exceeds all the high expectations I had. To see what my great-grandfather went through on this journey is a
very moving experience.“
Die Geschichte, die das Deutsche Auswandererhaus erzählt, wird immer mehr zum Anziehungspunkt für ausländische Besucher.
Speziell für das „Salad-Bowl“-Land Amerika,
wo viele Bürger europäische Wurzeln haben,
bedeutet der Besuch im Museum eine Spurensuche der besonderen Art. Hier können
sie die Auswanderung ihrer Ahnen vom
ersten Moment an nacherleben und nachempfinden, unter welchen Bedingungen die
Reise stattgefunden hat. Die Ausstellungstexte sowie die Hörstationen werden für die
ausländischen Gäste in englisch angeboten –
weitere Sprachen sollen folgen.

tells is becoming an increasingly strong attraction for foreign visitors, particularly for
those from the salad-bowl nation America,
where millions of people are interested in
tracing their European roots. At the German Emigration Center they experience
emigration from the very fi rst minute and
are able to understand the conditions and
circumstances of the arduous journeys their
ancestors took upon themselves. All exhibition texts and audio stations are presently in
German and English with other languages
soon to follow.
Am 18. Mai 2006 begrüßte das Deutsche
Auswandererhaus die ersten Reiseagenten
aus den USA: Jean Power und ihren Mann
Richard von Gemini Travel aus Hollywood,
Florida, und Chris Weike von NonStop Travel aus Torrance, Californien. Alle drei waren so begeistert von der Ausstellung und
von Bremerhaven, dass sie dieses Urlaubsziel in ihr Programm aufnehmen und ihren
Kunden weiterempfehlen wollen.
On May 18, 2006 the German Emigration
Center welcomed the first travel agents from
the U.S.A., Jean Power and her husband
Richard from Gemini Travel in Hollywood,
Florida, and Chris Weike from NonStop
Travel in Torrance, California. All three of
them were greatly impressed by the exhibition and confirmed that Bremerhaven and
the German Emigration Center would not
only be added to their range of travel destinations but also highly recommended to
their clients.
Am 24. Mai hatte sich eine amerikanische
Reisegruppe mit 15 Personen, die so genannte „James-Younger-Gang“, zu einem
Besuch im Auswandererhaus angemeldet.
Die Gruppe tourte mit ihrem Schauspiel des
legendären Bankräuber Jesse James und seiner Banditen durch Norddeutschland. Bei
dieser Gelegenheit forschten sie im Forum
Migration nach ihren Ahnen und fanden
tatsächlich Aufzeichnungen von Vorfahren,
die im Jahr 1855 über Bremerhaven ausgewandert waren. Die Reise wurde von dem
Reiseveranstalter Ed-Ventures aus Rochester, Minnesota organisiert.

An American tour group of 15, the so-called
James Younger Gang, signed up for a visit
to the museum on May 24, 2006. The theater group was touring North Germany with
its stage production of the legendary Jesse
James gang bank robbery. They took time
to research their ancestors at Forum Migration and did in fact discover records of family
members who emigrated via Bremerhaven
in 1855. This group‘s trip was organized
by the tour operator Ed-Ventures, based in
Rochester, Minnesota.

In den ersten Tagen des 20. Jahrhunderts
fi ndet Danny Boodmann, Heizer auf dem
Passagierdampfer „Virginian“, ein schreiendes Baby in einer Zitronenkiste.
Der Einfachheit halber tauft er den Jungen auf den Namen Neunzehnhundert. Die
ersten Jahre seines Lebens wird der Junge in dem Maschinenraum des Schiffes,
das zwischen Europa und Amerika pendelt, versteckt gehalten. Im Alter von fünf
oder sechs Jahren gelangt er erstmals zu
den obersten Decks – in den Ballsaal. Als
er sich dort an das Klavier setzt, ist es wie
ein Wunder: Neunzehnhundert spielt das
Instrument virtuos und entlockt der Klaviatur wunderschöne Melodien. Um die Welt
mit seinem Können zu erobern, müsste er
jedoch das Schiff verlassen. Erst als er ein
blondes Mädchen, das sich auf seiner Auswandererreise nach Amerika befindet, trifft,
entschließt er sich zu diesem Schritt – kehrt
jedoch auf der Gangway wieder um.
Eines Tages kommt der selbsternannte „König des Jazz“ Jelly Roll Morton an Bord und
fordert Neunzehnhundert zu einem „Klavierduell“ heraus.
Meisterregisseur Giuseppe Tornatore (der
für „Cinema Paradiso“ den Oscar und den
Golden Globe erhielt) versteht es, die tobenden musikalischen Kompositionen Ennio Morricones mit der einfühlsamen Geschichte zu vereinen und eine fesselnde
Atmosphäre zu schaffen.
During the very first days of the 20th century
Danny Boodmann, stoker on the passenger
steamship Virginian, discovers a crying baby
in a crate of lemons.
For lack of a better name, he christens the
baby boy 1900. The boy spends the first years
of his life in hiding in the engine room of the
ship which sails back and forth between Europe and America. He ventures to the upper
decks for the first time at the age of five or
six, and ends up in the ballroom where he
sits down at the piano, an instrument he has
never before laid eyes on, only to play with
amazing virtuosity. The only way he can acquaint the world with his incredible talent
is to leave the ship. On board, he meets a
young blonde girl who is emigrating to the
U.S. and decides to do likewise, yet turns
back on the gangway.
One day, the self-proclaimed King of Jazz
Jelly Roll Morton is on board the ship and
challenges 1900 to a piano duel.
Top director Giuseppe Tornatore (who received an Oscar and the Golden Globe for his
filming of Cinema Paradiso) is masterful in
weaving Ennio Morricone‘s surging musical
compositions carefully with this sensitive
story, thereby creating a captivating story.

Bruce Chatwin had always dreamt of travelling to Patagonia, the unique and beautiful
land at the end of the world, which, politically, has been divided between Chile and Argentina since the beginning of the century.
In his mid-thirties he decides to make good
on his plans. His book In Patagonia is neither
a travel guide nor a travel report of the usual kind, but rather a travel journal penned by
an untiring wanderer and searcher, a man
whose curiosity and charisma wins him the
hearts of many and who draws anecdotes
and experiences from those he talks to.
