ceive the th ree pictures reproduced
with this article. These a re previously
unpublished pictures. We have a Nine
ty-Nine scoop. They cam e into m y pos
session a s a result of an announcem ent
in the Bell H elicopter Co. News. The
story m entioned th a t I had been elect
ed a s your C hairm an. A w orkm an in
the Bell factory, on reading the article,
called m e saying he had these pictures
of AMELIA. He had kept them all
these y e ars but now would like to give
them to someone who would appreciate
them . I told him th at I would be happy
to accept them on behalf of the Nine
ty - Nines. The pictures, he said, had
been taken by a buddy of his. They
w ere both on board a U.S. m ilitary
ship in the h arb o r a t Honolulu a t the
tim e AMELIA and F R E D NOONAN
crashed on take-off during th eir origi
n al E a s t to W est around the world
flight a ttem p t in 1937. T he only per
son he could identify w as AMELIA.
Through a long search I have found
the identity of those in the picture of
individuals. ALICE HAMMOND and
BETTY G ILLIES w ere able to come
to the rescue A LICE’S husband JOHN
identified them and BETTY as a
friend, MR. WALLY TIMM, who took
them to MRS. PAUL MANTZ. She
verified JO HN ’S report. She m arked
the p ictu re a s follows: “ M arch 1937
on the SS M atsonia going back to
L. A. ju st a fte r AMELIA cracked up
in Hawaii. Left to right: PAUL MANTZ,
T ER R Y MINOR (TERRY MANTZ.)
CHRIS HOLMES, MONA HOLMES,
AMELIA EARHART.” JOHN HAM
MOND fu rth e r identifies MR. and MRS.
HOLMES of S anta B a rb a ra as host
and hostess to AMELIA in th eir Hono
lulu hom e during h er stay there.
The other pictures show the ship im
m ediately following the crash with
AMELIA on the wing and then a fter
the crow d had disbanded. The penciled

“We a re now approaching 40,000
feet.” Sgt. Johnson’s voice sounded a s
suring as it cam e through our head
sets. Thoughts w ere on the m a te rial
we covered on hyperventilation and
hypoxia the previous day. B reathing
w as labored and sounded loud to m y
ears.
It w as the clim actic m om ent after
an intensive tw o - day session of the
Physiological T raining C ourse a t Offutt
AFB, N ebraska. The 99s p articip atin g
in the course w ere LEAH SNART,
MILDRED BARRETT,
MIMI
HA
WORTH, EVELYN SEDIVY, DONNA
BRUMMER,
VERA
BARTUNEK,
FLORENCE BORING, JE A N GIVEN,
MARY LOU PH EL PS, MARGARET
SOBECK and a prospective m em ber,
ROSEMARY HARVEY. With us w ere
two student pilots, PAT H EIDENREICH and VICKI PIC H LE R who
w ere sponsored by our N eb rask a chap
ter.
Captain B ill Pfoff, physiological
training officer, and his a ssistan ts did
an excellent job of presen tin g the m a
terial to us. Capt. Pfoff covered the
changing of the atm osphere at altitude
and som e of the b asic g as law s which
would p ertain to us when taking the
“ ride.”
Sgt. D avis then acquainted us with
respiration and circulation a t sea level
and at altitude. The resp iratio n portion
covered such item s as p ressu re b re a th
ing, functions of resp iratio n and gas
transfer, and circulation covered the
functions and m echanics, blood com
position and hyperventilation. H yper
ventilation is not caused by too m uch
oxygen in the system , bu t ra th e r by a
deficiency of carbon dioxide.
Oxygen deficiency, b e tte r known as
hypoxia, w as explained to us by Capt.
Pfoff. His lecture included such points
as saturation of the red blood cells;
types and causes of hypoxia; sym p
tom s and ch aracteristics; facto rs af
fecting hypoxia; tim e of useful con
sciousness (TUC);
prevention and
treatm ent. Capt. Pfoff stressed quite
clearly th at tre a tm e n t IS prevention.
Our next lesson helped us to under
stand the m ech an ical effects caused
by changing atm o sp here p re ssu re on
the hum an body. The instructor, Sgt.
The SEE THE USA folio presentation ceremony in Morocco included the Min
ister of Tourism on the left, 99 YVONNE GALLOT, center front, and Moroccan
Director General for Civil Aviation on right.
TriPacers in front of the Rabat Hilton complete with models in “ caftans,” the
native dress of Morocco. One model is 99 YVONNE GALLOT who flew in from
Tangier and the other is MRS. J. P. LAMBRICHTS from Casablanca, and they
utilized the hotel’s private strip in preparation for the SEE THE USA Folio
presentation.
Bayne, gave two of the basic g as law s
in m o re detail. These w ere Boyle’s
Law (trapped gos) and H en ry ’s Law
(evolved g as d isorders). H enry’s Law
covers decom pression sickness w hich
is caused by exposing the hum an body
to
decreased b aro m etric
pressure.
Most people re la te this m ore easily
w ith reference to the “ b en d s.”
Sgt. B ayne’s next topic w as to fam il
iarize us w ith the ad v an tag es of pres-
surization and th e h azard s of a decom
pression. E m erg e n cy precautions in
case of a decom pression is to go on
oxygen im m ediately.

struction, w e w ere outfitted w ith p a ra

Our m ost successful m eeting to

The 99 Squadron wives entertained
the group to tea a fte r this, and in
the evening they w ere given a w onder

to 99 Squadron for th eir wonderful
hospitality and to ELIZABETH OVER

A ra th e r nice p ostscript to th'e

when ELIZABETH w as w orking Rome

HALSTEAD really did enjoy flying
in the Pow der Puff D erby this y e a r
although they did not finish the flight
because of engine trouble. On June

track the race route to California. They
stopped in G reenville, M iss.; B eau

night.
A cold front w as predicted for the
next m orning, but an e arly d ep artu re
got them out before the front a r

even a fter m aking several tu rn s for
identification.
A fter crossing the m ountains, JUAN
ITA noticed th a t the fuel gages indi
cated no gas. They knew th ere should
have been two m o re hours of fuel,
but those gages gave th em an em pty
feeling. Then NANCY realized the
whole electrical system w as out. T here
fore, no radios. E l P aso In ternational

to land with no radio contact, but
NANCY rock'sd h e r wings, noted the
runaw ay in use, and landed. They
learned la te r that they had been given
a green light to land, but failed to
see it.
A fter an overnight stay in Phoenix,
they left the next m orning for Van
Nuyfe, but typical California smog
m ade them land a t P alm Springs
for V FR conditions. H ow ever, the
visibility increased until they w ere
able to fly to Van Nuys in tim e to

On rac e day, take off had to w ait
for the sm og to lift to three m iles
visibility. F inally they w ere off, head

then on, the w eath er deteriorated
steadily. They had to fight head winds,
dodge thunderstorm s, and fly a t low
altitudes to avoid the low ceilings.
On Monday, NANCY and JUANITA
le ft Corpus C hristi for G reenville,
Miss. T heir altitude b ecam e low er
and low er and low er as th e clouds be

little no rth of Monroe, L a., th eir
engine began to ru n rough. A check of

the roughness increased and the en

Then next day they flew th eir lim p

re a l engine trouble. Although the
trip w as alm ost an obstacle course,

could take off on a long paved ru n

having to have 5,000 ft. of paved

runw ay to get off!
Circle X Ranch h a s a soaring school

It surely w as interestin g when you

of the wind and no engine.
Coming back from St. Augustine,
MARY D and I went around and in

Come on all you non-attending m em

Three days a fte r the Ju ly m eeting

DIANE JE X term ed as “ one hellydam n w ind,” totaled out Old Yeller,
th eir P ip er Cub on which she and h er
husband GLEN had lavished so m uch
lender, loving care. The 70-mph wind,
with gusts to 92 mph, yanked the tie
down chains a p a rt and engaged Old
Y eller in a free-for-all with an ad jac en t
Super Cub. And Old Y eller w asn ’t in
sured.
At least that is the w ay DIANE tells
it. Probably the two planes had been
itching to engage in com bat from the
first d ay they laid headlights on each
other, and m erely used the wind as an
excuse. And like the G ingham Dog and
the Calico Cat, they ju st about ate
each other up, except th at DIANE and
GLEN cam e along in tim e to salvage
the engine, gear, seats, and a nut-andbolt or two.
Old Y eller had also heard th at he
was about to be trad ed for a C itabria,

he’d see to it they d id n ’t get the Cita

G ET G ROSSETETE of Albuquerque.
N UGGET flew us both up to a little
Indian village of Taos—really fascinat
ing —I have some terrific colour slides
of this trip. MARIE and NUGGET' are
now the new ow ners of B ER Y L ’S
kangaroo m ascot “ Skippy” so we have
both left som e of A ustralia in the
U.S.A. We flew about 8000 m iles
around the S tates in “Annie T he A r
row ” (our P ip e r Cherokee), covering
the P ainted D esert, M onum ent Valley
and the G rand Canyon, (a sight not
to be m issed), then a fte r the AWTAR,
we retu rn ed via K entucky, Wichita, Al
buquerque to San Mateo, a grand
v enture and one we will re m em b er
our lives. It w as g re a t m eeting
the girls (too num erous to mention
p arately ) whom I had m et for
first tim e in 1967 when I few

While I w as in the States BETTY

flight across the P acific. Have just
h eard from ROSALIND M E R R IFIE LD
who seem s to be leading an extrem ely
ex citin g flying career. She will be
m aking three delivery flights of the
P ilatu s T urbo P o rte rs la te r this y ear
and will do h e r endorsem ent on these
a irc ra ft in Switzerland. Also recently
flew a B eech B aron to V ietnam . While
she and h er W ing-mate w ere ap
proaching Saigon, the accom panying
a irc ra ft w as asked to go round to
enable a dam aged fig h ter to land,
and w as consequently hit in his wing
tan k by a sniper. Sounds a little dan
gerous to me! ROSLIND is a t the mo

course in prep aratio n for the propjets. M ARIE RICHARDSON lfeaves
A ustralia in O ctober for a visit to
asia w ith h e r husband. Stopping places
will include Hong Kong, T aiw an and
Singapore, retu rn in g via D arw in and
B risbane. M ARIE h a s LORRAINE
McCARTY’S d au g h ter JE A N staying
with h e r a t the m om ent. JEA N h as m i
g rated to this country and hopes to
visit with CHRISTINE HENDERSON
la te r in the year. Another flying ad
venture ahead for MARGARET KENTLEY and seven other pilots—leaving
Sydney this w eek in a C om m anche
and a C essna 182 for a th ree weeks
flying tour of New Guinea. RUTH
HODGES is now endorsed on the Ces
sna 310 and I h e ar h er d au g h ter
PI A has com m enced flying lessons, so
it appears we will have a m other
and daughter team shortly. P E G KELMAN underw ent m ajo r su rg ery this
week and is recuperatin g in the hospi
tal, but not fast enough for P E G —
she hated having h e r “ W ings’’ clip
ped. She hopes to be fit enough to
enter our W arana Air R ace for the
big festival in O ctober. With h er
“ G et up and go” sp irit I a m sure
she will m ake it. We will be sorry
to lose JU DY LORDING back to
Sydney in the n e a r ftuure. H er hus
band ROWLEY h as recen tly been
tran sfe rred there. We have ce rtain
ly enjoyed having h er in Q ueensland
with us. H ER EXCELLENCY THE
LADY CASEY is hoping to a rran g e
an o th er “ F ly-In ” to C an b erra again
this y ear. C an b erra is a v ery beautiful
city and we all do enjoy these visits.
Before closing I have one m ore thank
you to MICKEY and CHARLES DUGDALE of Van Nuys. MICKEY w as a
g rand help a t the beginning of the AWTAR and CHARLES did a wonderful
job in driving us to and from our
Motel and the airp o rt during those
hectic days before the race. CHARLES
w as in A ustralia during the w ar and
we hope th a t he and MICKEY will visit
us again one day.
Cheerio from Down Under!
