APRIL/MAY 2016 Connections St. Jude’s Episcopal Church 815 E Graves Ave, Orange City, FL 32763 RECTOR’S REFLECTIONS Tuesdays John Knox Village Chapel 11AM April showers bring May flowers – at least that’s what they say. Since my Easter lilies from last year didn’t bloom in time for an early Easter, I’m praying they’ll in bud in time for Mother’s Day or Pentecost. Either way, we’ll be blessed at some point with flowers. And speaking of Mother’s Day, the history of celebrating mothers goes back to the era of ancient Greek and Romans. But the roots of Mother’s Day history can also be traced to the United Kingdom where a Mothering Sunday was celebrated way before the holiday came to the United States. Thanks to the hard work of Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis today the festival of Mother’s Day is celebrated across 46 countries! Millions of people across the globe take the day as an opportunity to honor their mothers, thank them for their efforts in giving them life, raising them and being their constant support and well-wisher. One of the joys of being a mom are those ‘momisms’ that transcend time, space, language and culture like: Don’t make that face or it’ll freeze in that position What if everyone jumped off a cliff? Would you do it too? Close that door! Were you born in a barn? Don’t eat that, it’ll stunt your grown If you fall out of that tree and break your leg, don’t come running to me Because I’m the mother, that’s why I pray that you moms will have a blessed day enjoying your children, whether they are grown or still living at home. Kids young and old, reach out and call your mother if it is at all possible. Psalm 28:7 PET FOOD PANTRY 1st and 3rd Tuesday on the month from 8:30 - 10am. We are sponsored by Sophie's Circle Dog Rescue. You can find more information about how she started her rescue mission on www.sophiescircle.rescueme.org or https://www.facebook.com/ sophiescirclehuskyrescue. These sights will give insight to how she started her nonprofit. You can make donations online, join the many events or just enjoy her story. Tom and I went to a rainbow bridge event for the two dogs we sent to heaven. We have exciting news. I met with a group and Rev Robin at All Saints Episcopal, Enterprise. I gave them a description of how our pantry works and they want to have a pet food pantry every Wednesday at the same time they serve resident foods. The set up is in progress and our grand opening is set for April 6th. We are still in need of cat litter. It seem to go fast. We seem to have more cats needing dry and wet food and treats. Remember the guidelines are must be city residents, show proof of residency and proof of spay/neuter. We have a list for low .cost clinics for vaccinations, spay/neuter, adoptions, lost and found, as well as trap and release. We had a booth at the Strawberry festival. Several people stopped to get information. We collected $10.00 in donations. Thank you for you support, Tom and Karen Canty (386) 717-2030 DEACON WANDA SHERROUSE "I was in prison and you came to visit me." Thank you for all of your donations and thank you for your offers to pray for us during the weekend of April 21 to April 24. Your prayers are coveted. Also a big thank you to the youth group for their wonderful poster they made for the weekend. I know that all the ladies will love it. Please know it makes my heart happy to have my church family supporting the Deacons in this ministry. I know they are not at the forefront of your thoughts, but we need yours if you have not turned yours in. We sent out around 100 pledge cards and have only received 60 in return. We are on a VERY tight budget at St. Jude’s and every penny counts! There is no wiggle room in our budget at the current time. We may even fall short toward the end of the year. Please, if you have not turned in your pledge card you can drip it in Sandra’s box in the narthex this Sunday. It really is imperative that we get all the pledge cards back. Thanks for your time. Pledge cards are available in the Narthex and are blue in color. SR. WARDEN Thank you to all who helped with the Strawberry festival! Even with the rain we all did a great job. The rain, I believe, is a blessing. More to follow on that. Acolyte festival is upon us already. I think we are sending 4 kids and 2 chaperones. Details to follow. The sunrise Easter service was awesome. You get a real feeling for the service when the sun is rising. We had a very good turn out for the service. The church picnic on April 30 should be awesome. Thank you to all who are working on that! Faithfully Jim APRIL/MAY 2016 PAGE 5 BIBLE STUDY Tuesday’s 1:00PM Tuesday’s 6:30PM Wednesday’s 10:45AM Can’t come every week. No Problem! Attend when you can. Material is available for purchase, but not required. Small group Bible studies are a great way to learn and make closer friendships. All are invited to attend. Let your family, friends and neighbors know. “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” Romans 10:17 UNASHAMED Our youth have been very busy lately. Most of our youth group participated in the last New Beginnings meeting in March. The weekend was a huge success, and many of our youth that went on the weekend experienced God in a way that will forever change them. The next major thing that we have going on is Happening. For those who aren't familiar with what Happening is, in a nutshell, it is a weekend for high school aged youth that is modeled after Cursillo. We have a total of 4 youth that will be on this Happening weekend, I am excited and eager to see how God will continue to transform them over the course of the weekend. I am hopeful that we will have some youth that will want to share their personal experience with the church as a whole in the near future. I look forward to having some more great updates to pass along in the near future. - Justin HELPING HANDS Our outreach group continues to be active and busy. Plans are underway for various projects to help the members of our congregation. Clothing is being delivered for women's job interviews. The table at the Strawberry Festival was busy, and donations were given to our organization. Information was given out to the community re/ St Jude's Food Pantry and Pet Food Pantry. Don't forget to attend our monthly meetings, held the last Sunday of each month at 9 AM. CHURCH PERIODICAL CLUB MILES OF PENNIES It is that time again to collect the “Prayer Pennies” at St. Jude’s. This year we are again collecting for The Church Periodical Club, The Miles of Pennies Fund. The Miles of Pennies Fund was established in 1988 on the 100th anniversary of The Church Periodical Club. The Miles of Pennies Fund Committee awarded its first grants in 1991. The grants serve the needs of children from kindergarten through high school wherever there is a need. During the month of May, our parishioners are encouraged to especially pray for those in need of these grants. There will be “Prayer Penny” baskets located in the Narthex, the Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall. The pennies will be collected through the last Sunday in May and then forwarded to Church Club Periodical for the Miles of Pennies Fund. GATHERING Saturday April 30 10AM-6PM Entrance Fee $6.00/car Sonny’s pulled chicken and pulled pork, beans, cole slaw and potato salad $8.00 THANK YOU in advance for your participation and remember to PRAY!!! “In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” Acts 20:35 APRIL/MAY 2016 PAGE 9 DEACON PAULINE BUTLER I guess everyone thought that after Easter we'd be ready to rest awhile. Not St. Jude's! We're still making plans and going strong. The Tuesday night Bible Study is small but lively! We're having a great time discussing " How Reliable Is The Bible?" So far, we've determined it's pretty reliable. We'd love to have a few more voices to help work out our questions and add their opinions. We meet from 6:30 pm to 8 pm on Tuesdays at the church. If you'd like to come but need a ride, please call me, (386) 574-7195. We'll get you there! ULTREYA On Friday, May 20 from 7 to 9 p.m. there will be an Ultreya here at St. Jude's. We need all Cursillistas who can to please help with the set up and clean up. We also need musicians. Ultreya is a sharing event that starts with music and a pot luck dinner. The dinner is followed by more music, and a time to share how we're each doing with our spiritual walk, then a few words from one of our new members. This is a Cursillo event, but ANYONE who is interested is welcome to come. VACATION BIBLE STUDY On Sunday, May 8 at 9 a.m. there will be a brief meeting for those willing to help with Vacation Bible School. VBS will be held from July 11 to 15 in the evening. During that time we're going to become pirates! We usually have lots of kids, so we need lots of help! BRUNCH BUNCH Our next Brunch Bunch will get together at The Texas Road House on Saxon Blvd. after the 10:30 service on Sunday, May 1. Ya'll come! “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:10 ALTAR GUILD Thanks to the members of St. Jude’s Episcopal Church, there are now very nice linens and hangings for the altar. Funds are NOW needed to repair or even replace the chalices and candle holders. YOU can help! Would you please plan to STOP and Look (and maybe make a purchase) at the soon to be set up Altar Guild Shop right here at St. Jude’s. There will be good buys with a variety of items donated by members of the Altar Guild. All the proceeds will go towards this very needy cause. It is hoped that this effort will kick-start a drive to raise funds for the chalices and candle holders. The repair and replacement costs are quite expensive, especially for our small church. Any and all help will be appreciated. Thank you. May 13 and 14 8AM-2PM (Donated items may be brought in starting Sunday, May 8. Talk to a vestry member if you need your donations picked up) CONNECTIONS PAGE 10 St. Jude’s Episcopal Church A friendly congregation bringing people to Jesus Christ by sharing the Good News of God’s Love through our worship, fellowship, discipleship, outreach and service Phone/Fax: 386-775-6200 Facebook: St Judes Church - Orange City E-mail: [email protected] 815 East Graves Avenue Orange City, FL 32763 YOUR VESTRY Rector Rev.
