Clark set the walk-up ticket prices at $5 so whole families could attend the games. “We are going to put a team on the field that will give fans the ability to watch high quality football after the NFL season is over, and also provide a fun and safe environment for the whole family” Clark said. For those looking to be more involved in the action, closer seating is available starting at $10 and season tickets starting at $56. For most Municipalities, having a professional sports team is just a pipe dream. But Rio Rancho is making those dreams turn into a reality as it welcomes the New Mexico Stars of the Indoor Football League (IFL) to the Santa Ana Star Center this month. The Star Center sits in the center of Rio Rancho, and it gives the Stars one of the best arenas to call home from the start. Also the home of the New Mexico Mustangs of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), the Star Center is quickly becoming the goto arena for New Mexico indoor sports and entertainment. Even though this is their first season in the IFL, the Stars have shot up the pre-season rankings to the #4 spot in the Intense Conference thanks to their impressive roster. The team will feature former New Mexico Lobos DonTrell Moore, DeAndre Wright, Ivan Hernandez, and 2005 NFL 1st round draft pick, Erasmus James. At the helm of the offense will be Arkelon Hall, formally of the West Texas Roughnecks. Hall is an accomplished IFL quarterback who made a name for himself while playing his college ball in Memphis, TN. Hall finished his career with the Tigers 10th all-time in program history in pass attempts (414), eighth in pass completions (235), and 10th in total passing yards (2,607). DonTrell Moore showed his excitement recently when he said: “I grew up in Roswell [NM] and played my college ball at UNM, so New Mexico is in my blood. Playing for the Stars is a homecoming home for me and I couldn’t be happier about it. The arena is incredible; the coach is one of the best in the league; and the fans are the same ones that cheered me on in college. I believe God put this team so I could finish my football career in New Mexico.” Leading the team from the sidelines will be Head Coach Chris Williams, who boasts a 70-44 record in the IFL with a league championship in 2006, and the record for most points scored in a game (97). An added bonus is that Coach Williams has a history with both DeAndre Wright and Arkelon Hall as they both played under him with the West Texas Roughnecks. Behind the scenes there is one man that made this dream a reality, Dart Clark. Mr. Clark considers himself a family man and has nine… yes 9, children, and 6 grandchildren. “Family comes first to me, and I truly feel Rio Rancho is the perfect fit for an IFL team. The city is big enough for a team to thrive, yet the people make it feel small enough to be a town where everybody knows everybody else. As much as I’ve talked to local media and business owners, Rio Rancho feels like a part of my family” Clark said. The team opens their season on February 26th against the Colorado Ice at home. “The Ice have a good team, both on offense and defense. But, I feel our team can compete with anyone in the league despite being an expansion team. When Dart [Clark] and I started building this team, we wanted to have a team that could win right now; and to tell you the truth, I think we do. We may not break the record for most points scored in a game, but we will surely give the fans something to scream about” Williams said. Lest we forget, the IFL recently made headlines when future NFL Hall of Fame WR, Terrell Owens, signed with the Allen Wranglers. The Wranglers play the Stars in Rio Rancho on March 11th at 3:05 PM. “The signing of T.O. was huge for the league because it gives the fans a chance to see a future Hall of Fame player up close and personal. We are going to try and make the Stars the most fan friendly team in the IFL” The team signed a 5-year lease with the Star Center, which means they are going to provide local economic stimulation for years to come. Not only that, but we plan on employing a gameday staff of around 2550 personnel, ranging from parking attendants, concession vendors, security, and various team employees. The team is certain to have a further economic impact in the community through the use of hotels, restaurants, shopping, casino’s, as well as cab and shuttle services. To further have a footprint on the community, the Stars are planning to be active through personal appearances, school programs, print, radio and TV interviews. One thing the entire team feels strongly about is supporting the vast military members we have in the Rio Rancho and Albuquerque area. “I am a military veteran myself” Clark Said. “So, supporting our troops and saying thank you is certainly something I plan on doing. We have Kirtland Air Force base in Albuquerque, as well as a National Guard armory just down the road from us; it only makes sense to get in touch with those brave young men and women and have them involved with our team.” In the end, having a professional sports team come in to a growing city such as Rio Rancho only helps to solidify to the people around the nation that the economy is sound, the commercial opportunities are ripe, and the entertainment is there to support future growth. When new residents or businesses look at Rio Rancho as a possible destination, the Stars can be a focal point to show that the residents of Rio Rancho and Albuquerque are willing to spend the money to see a quality product. And, where money is spent by one person, money is made by another.
