Perspectives on in/outside
An exhibition by Pierre Juillerat and Le Van Bo at SAVVY Contemporary Berlin
Perspectives on in / outside is an allegory of changing positions i.e. viewing from different
perspectives, from within and from without. With the Perspective on the inside the exhibition intends to
lay bare something which might be considered intimate, a living space for all, and with the Perspectives
on the outside a reflection of the public in the interior of the art space turned salon. Perspectives on in
/ outside thus strives at positioning itself as a hybrid project in thorough search by turning the inner
surface of something outwards and vice versa.
Pierre Juillerat explores a contemporary sphere of formalist and conceptual painting sometimes
reminiscent to the likes of Bridget Riley or Josef Albers. As if bent on proving that there are no limits to
colour combinations, Juillerat forces us to rethink our usual perception of what complementary is or can
be, and thus harshly experimenting and extending on Goethe's “Theory of Colours” (Zur Farbenlehre),
but also questioning the specific colours that reciprocally evoke each other in the eye. With a
background in architecture, as a musician, a pilot and painter, Juillerat is versed with turning things
inside out.
Le Van Bo initiated an almost philanthropic design project based on the controversial socio-economic
Hartz IV laws in Germany. Starting up with a piece of wooden plank he encourages people to build a
self-made armchair, redolent of the Bauhaus classics, for 24 Euros, within 24 hours. Based on the idea
that even those living on Hartz IV can afford for a timeless and quality design Bo dares to democratize
the philosophy of quality and design by making the design instructions accessible to all on the internet
and offering courses in adult education centres. Le Van Bo’s multi-laterality is reflected in his
credentials; once upon a time a TV moderator, then Hip Hop artist, and now an architect and designer.
Some of the perspectives through which this exhibition will be seen are painting, installations, design,
architecture, which boil down to investigating the social transposition of forms and their functionality.
Complementary to this exhibition, a Hartz IV furniture workshop will be installed, wherein people will be
invited to build up armchairs and take them away.

Perspektiven auf innen/außen
Eine Ausstellung von Pierre Juillerat und Le Van Bo bei SAVVY Contemporary
Perspektiven auf innen/außen ist eine Allegorie der wechselnden Positionen, d.h. der Betrachtung
aus verschiedenen Perspektiven, von innen und von außen. Mit der Einnahme dieser wechselseitigen
Perspektiven zielt die Ausstellung darauf ab mit Perspektiven auf innen, etwas, das als intim betrachtet
werden könnte, freizulegen – einen Lebensraum für alle – und mit Perspektiven auf außen auf eine
Reflexion des Öffentlichen im Inneren eines zum Salon gewordenen Kunstraums. Perspektiven auf
innen/außen ist also bestrebt, sich selbst als Hybridprojekt auf eingehender Suche zu positionieren,
indem sie die innere Seite von etwas nach außen kehrt und umgekehrt.
Pierre Juillerat erforscht in seinen Werken eine zeitgenössische Sphäre formalistischer und
konzeptueller Malerei, die an Bridget Riley oder Josef Albers erinnert. Als sei er darauf aus, zu zeigen,
dass der Kombination von Farben keine Grenzen gesetzt sind, zwingt er uns, unsere gewohnte
Wahrnehmung dahingehend zu überdenken, was komplementär ist oder sein kann. Er experimentiert
unsanft mit Goethes „Farbenlehre“ und erweitert diese, aber hinterfragt auch die spezifischen Farben,
die sich im Auge jeweils gegenseitig hervorrufen. Durch seinen Werdegang als Architekt, Musiker, Pilot
und Maler ist Juillerat im Umkehren von Dingen versiert.
Le Van Bo initiierte ein fast philanthropisches Designprojekt, das auf den umstrittenen Hartz-IVGesetzen basiert. Mit einem Holzbrett, wie man es in jedem Baumarkt erwerben kann, ermuntert er
Menschen, selbst einen Sessel für 24 Euro zu bauen, der an die Bauhaus-Klassiker erinnert, und zwar
innerhalb von 24 Stunden. Ausgehend von dem Gedanken, dass selbst die, die von Hartz IV leben, sich
zeitloses Qualitätsdesign leisten können sollten, wagt es Bo, die Philosophie von Qualität und Design
zu demokratisieren, indem er die Bauanleitungen im Internet für alle zugänglich macht und Kurse an
Volkshochschulen anbietet. Le Van Bos Vielseitigkeit spiegelt sich in seiner Laufbahn wieder; ehemals
Fernsehmoderator, später Hiphop- Künstler und nun Architekt und Designer.
Einige der Perspektiven, durch die diese Ausstellung zu sehen sein wird, sind Malerei, Installationen,
Design, Architektur, die darauf abheben, die soziale Wandlung von Formen und ihren Funktionen zu
ergründen. Ergänzend zu dieser Ausstellung wird es einen Hartz-IV-Möbel-Workshop geben, wo die
Leute eingeladen sind, Sessel zu bauen, die sie hinterher mit nach Hause nehmen.
