The International Veteran Cycle ASSOCIATION
The International Veteran Cycle Association (IVCA) is an association of organizations and individuals
interested in vintage bicycles: riding, collecting, restoration, history and their role in society.
Statement of Purpose
The International Veteran Cycle Association is dedicated to the preservation of the history of the bicycle and bicycling
and the enjoyment of the bicycle as a machine.
On 26th May 1986, at Lincoln ,UK, the International Veteran Cycle Association (IVCA in short) was formed by
Veteran Cycle Clubs, Museums and Collectors of old pedal cycles and related objects from various countries.
The Objectives of the Association are:
To encourage interests and activities relating to all old human-powered vehicles of one or more wheels deriving from
the velocipede tradition.
To support and encourage research and classification of their history and to act as a communication medium between
clubs, societies and museums world-wide on mutual matters relating to old cycles.
To favour by Rallies, Meetings, Exhibitions, Sales and publications, the free circulation, to people of ideas concerning
cycles, cycling and related matters throughout the world. One rally each year is designated as the International Veteran
Cycle Rally (IVCR) and should aim to be the major international meeting of that year. The country hosting the rally is
responsible for the format of the rally, which may comprise of four or more days of activities. The host country for the
IVCR will be decided at the Annual General Meeting several years ahead Offers to host the IVCR are acceptable from
any country.

Le mot du President
Chers Amis,
Lors de notre dernière assemblée générale, vous m’avez accordé le
privilège de présider notre association pour les deux années à venir et j’espère
être digne de votre confiance en marchant dans les pas du Français Gérard
Buisset, 1er président et membre fondateur de l’IVCA, grand collectionneur que
j’ai par ailleurs bien connu.
A l’époque de la création de l’IVCA, il était facile d’acquérir un vélo
ancien et même de constituer une belle collection à peu de frais. Aujourd’hui,
l’offre s’est raréfiée favorisant l’apparition de copies, principalement de grandBi. Ses copies qui sont si peu conformes à notre éthique apportent
paradoxalement un renouveau à notre mouvement. Nous constatons d’années en
années un vieillissement de nos effectifs mais il me semble que le ciel
s’éclaircit.
La possibilité d’acquérir et de circuler avec une copie attire une jeune
génération qui jusqu'à présent exprimait sa passion du vélo en collectionnant des
cycles des années 30 ou 50 plus facile à trouver et qui aujourd’hui, par le biais
du grand-Bi, se découvre un réel intérêt pour les cycles originaux plus anciens.
Une nouvelle dynamique est en train de se créer. Nous pouvons le constater en France au travers du forum « Tonton
Vélo » qui compte près de 500 membres mais aussi avec les tweed run qui fleurissent un peu partout. Ainsi, L’Anjou
Vélo Vintage qui s’est déroulé en juin dans la ville de Saumur et auquel nous avons participé a réuni pour sa deuxième
édition 1400 cyclistes en tenues de toutes les époques.
Nous devons toutefois rester vigilants. Concernant les copies de grand-Bi, même si je reconnais quelles servent notre
mouvement, je regrette qu’elles prennent aujourd’hui le pas sur les originaux dans nos rallyes.
Nos rassemblements doivent garder l’esprit qui animait les fondateurs de l’IVCA, assurer la conservation du
patrimoine vélocipédique et nos rallyes doivent être une vitrine pour tous les cycles qui présentent un intérêt
historique.
A l’invitation du club « Saint-Pétersbourg Races Bureau », nous avons visité cette ville de Russie et ses
environs début juillet accompagné de représentants de République Tchèque, de Lettonie et d’Ukraine. Nous avons
reçu un accueil de très haute qualité et nous remercions vivement les membres de ce club qui se veut la résurgence
d’un club créé en 1897, dissous après la révolution de 1917 et dont ils possèdent une grande partie des archives. Le but
de cette visite était de nous présenter les attraits touristiques de la ville et les possibilités d’y organiser un rallye IVCA
et nous avons découvert un site exceptionnel aux abords de la résidence impériale qui pourrait accueillir un tel
événement. Reste à régler quelques problèmes logistiques et administratifs que j’ai soumis aux organisateurs en les
invitants à participer aux prochains rallyes et à l’AG pour déposer une éventuelle candidature.
Je souhaite à chacun d’entre vous une belle fin de saison riche en rencontres et en découvertes

Dear Friends,
At our last meeting, you gave me the privilege of chairing the association for two years and I hope to be
worthy of your trust to step in the footsteps of French Gérard Buisset, first president and founding member of the
IVCA, a great collector I have well known.
When the IVCA was created, it was easy to acquire an old bike and even start a beautiful collection
inexpensively. Today, the supply has become scarce, favoring the appearance of copies, mainly high bicycles. These
copies, so inconsistent with our principles, paradoxically bring revival to our movement. We see year after year our
members getting older, but this seems to get better.
The ability to acquire and use a copy attracts a younger generation which so far expressed his passion for
cycling by collecting cycles of the thirties or fifties, these being easier to find. Today with the high bicycle, they
discover a real interest for older original cycles. A new dynamic is being created. We can see this in France through
the forum "Tonto Vélo" which has nearly 500 members, but also with the tweed runs that are popping up everywhere.
Also, “Anjou Vélo Vintage”, which was held in June in the city of Saumur (we participated), gathered for its second
edition1400 cyclists in costumes of various ages. We must remain vigilant. About copies of high bicycles, even though

I recognize that they support our movement, I regret that they now take precedence over the original ones in our
rallies.
Our meetings should keep the spirit that animated the founders of the IVCA, ensuring the preservation of our
heritage, and our rallies should be a showcase for all the cycles that are of historical interest.
At the invitation of the club "St. Petersburg Office Races," we visited this town in Russia and its
surroundings the beginning of July, accompanied by representatives of the Czech Republic, Latvia and Ukraine. We
received a very high quality welcome and we warmly thank the members of this club who want the resurgence of a
club founded in 1897, disbanded after the 1917 revolution and from which they possess a large part of the archives.
The purpose of this visit was to present the touristic attractions of the city and the possibilities to organize an IVCA
rally. We discovered an outstanding site near the imperial residence that could host such an event. Some logistical and
administrative problems remain to solve and I submitted them to the organizers, inviting them to participate to the
upcoming rallies and to the general meeting to make such an application.
I wish each of you a good end of this cycling season, rich of encounters and discoveries.

Bericht des Präsidenten
Liebe Freunde,
Anlässlich unserer letzten Generalversammlung habt Ihr mir das Privileg gegeben, unserem Verein für zwei
Jahre als Präsident vorzustehen und ich hoffe, ich bin euer Vertrauen wert in die Fussstapfen des Franzosen Gérard
Buisset zu treten, dem ersten Präsidenten und Gründungsmitglied der IVCA. Auch er war ein grosser Sammler, den
ich übrigens gut gekannt habe.
Zur Gründungszeit der IVCA war es leicht, ein altes Fahrrad zu erwerben und mit relativ wenigen Mitteln
eine stattliche Sammlung zusammenzutragen. Heute sieht es anders aus: das Angebot wird kleiner, dafür gibt es mehr
und mehr Kopien, vor allem bei den Hochrädern. Diese Kopien, die so wenig mit unserer Ethik gemeinsam haben,
bringen paradoxerweise frischen Wind in unsere Gemeinschaft. Es ist nicht zu übersehen dass das Durchschnittsalter
unserer Mitglieder von Jahr zu Jahr wächst, aber es scheint mir, dass der Horizont sich lichtet.
Die Möglichkeit, eine Kopie zu erwerben und damit zu fahren zieht eine junge Generation an, die bis jetzt
Fahrräder aus den Dreissiger- bis Fünfzigerjahren sammelte und damit ihre Velo-Leidenschaft zum Ausdruck brachte,
weil diese leichter zu finden waren. Dank der Hochradkopien entdecken viele heute neu ihr Interesse an
Originalrädern aus früheren Zeiten.
Es ist eine neue Dynamik entstanden. In Frankreich können wir es anhand des „Tonton Vélo“-Forum
feststellen, welches fast 500 Mitglieder umfasst, aber auch in den tweed run, welche vielerorts durchgeführt werden.
So haben im Juni anlässlich der zum zweiten Mal stattfindenden „L’Anjou Vélo Vintage“, die in der Stadt Saumur
durchgeführt wurde und wo wir auch dabei waren, 1400 Fahrer in Kostümen aus allen Epochen teilgenommen.
Trotzdem müssen wir wachsam bleiben. Obschon diese Hochradkopien unserem Verein dienen, nehmen sie
leider je länger je mehr überhand über die Originale in unseren Rallys.Unsere Zusammenkünfte müssen den Zeitgeist
beibehalten, welcher die Gründer der IVCA beseelte, müssen die Erhaltung des Velocipeden-Erbes gewährleisten und
eine Vitrine sein für alle Fahrräder, die einen historischen Wert haben.
Auf Einladung des Klubs „Saint-Pétersbourg Races Bureau“ haben wir anfangs Juli diese russische Stadt und
ihre Umgebung besucht, zusammen mit Vertretern aus der Tschechischen Republik, aus Lettland und der Ukraine. Der
Empfang, der uns beschert wurde, war von hoher Qualität und wir danken den Mitgliedern ganz herzlich dafür. Dieser
Klub ist eine Wiedergeburt des im Jahre 1897 gegründeten und 1917 nach der Revolution aufgelösten Klubs, von
welchem sie einen grossen Teil der Archive besitzen.
Das Ziel dieses Besuches bestand darin, uns die touristischen Anziehungspunkte von Sankt Petersburg
vorzustellen und die Möglichkeiten, dort ein IVCA-Rally zu organisieren. In der Nähe der Zarenresidenz haben wir
eine wunderschöne Gegend entdeckt, welche für die Durchführung dieses Ereignisses geeignet wäre. Zu lösen bleiben
noch einige Probleme logistischer und administrativer Art, auf welche ich die Organisatoren aufmerksam gemacht
habe und die ich eingeladen habe, an unseren nächsten Rallys und der Generalversammlung teilzunehmen und ihre
Kandidatur einzureichen.
Ich wünsche Euch allen ein schönes Saisonende, reich an Begegnungen und Entdeckungen.

Report of the rally in Gent, Belgium
held in May 2012

The venue was ideal for holding of a rally of this
kind. The Blaarmeesen had a racing track, campsite, hostel, and with hotels nearby. The meeting hall was a hired
marquee, erected especially for our purpose, with
a wooden floor, lighting, heating, stage for a band and
sound equipment, and a bar.
The countries represented were Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Russia, Hungary, Denmark, Sweden, Norway,
UK, Ireland, Canada, USA, Australia, Czech Republic,
France, Switzerland.. And ten people from Indonesia for
the first time. The rally was conducted for the most part in
English with translations into French when necessary.
Day One. The Century ride was held on an out and back
course into the countryside on bike paths and country
lanes for a twenty km circuit to be ridden eight times in
order to qualify for 100 miles. (Which is 160kms to those
from outside the UK.) Drinks, snacks and lunches were
provided at check points along the route. For those who
didn't fancy starting at five am there was the option of
doing one or more laps as time allowed.

Day Two. The jumble sale was well attended with stall
holders selling bikes, parts and memorabilia and eager
buyers repacking their vehicles with their goodies. I acquired a catalogue of Peugeot bikes of 1892, as well as
some posters that have only been recently re-printed. Then
there was the racing, albeit in the slight drizzle of rain and
cold conditions.

Day Three. There were over 250 riders kitted out in suitable attire matching the period of their bicycle. The costumes and machines made for a gay procession into the
city of Gent with many appreciative onlookers along the
way. It was level going which was just as well as there
were quite a few tricycles participating. There were numerous Ordinaries, some High-wheels, a few Hoge-Bi and
a goodly number of Pennyfarthings. As well as solid tyred
safeties from the pre 1935 period. We were presented to
the mayor and city dignitaries. It was a wonderful sunny
day, which enabled the ladies to dress in their fineries.
Having parked our variety of machines in a secure enclosure it provided a photogenic display. We were then free
to explore the inner city of historic Gent having received a
nosette, a delicacy famous in that region.
The final evening banquet dinner began with table settings
which were exquisite with many types of cutlery to indicate the number of courses we were to have. Three premain courses were followed by the special seafood buffet,
and finally the ornately decorated desserts. The music was
my type of rock and roll just made to dance to. Presentations of wine and flowers were made to the large team of
organizers, headed by Pierre de Perre and Dirk van Luchem. Congratulations for their wonderful Belgian hospitality, and of course the beer.
The whole event was a marvellous social occasion as there were convivial lunches and dinners allowing
time to meet and chat with our international friends, old
and new. Language does not seem to be a problem with
friends being able to converse via other friends and lots of
hand signing. And proudly showing off your veteran bike
works in all languages.
What a great international movement that we all belong
to!

“The Origins of the Bicycle”

Who did make the first bicycle? Whenever this question
is asked the name of Kirkpatrick Macmillan, a blacksmith
from Dumfries in Scotland, is sure to be put forward. But
is this fact or merely assertion? Andrew Ritchie has put
together all the evidence and the result is fascinating and
intriguing.

and women's history through the lens of the early years
of bicycling 1860-1910 . The book was written with the

book of its kind, i.e., a book on the history of women in
cycling, it will be enjoyed by women of all ages, and by
all those men and women who are fascinated by the
historical place of the bicycle in the culture.

Dashing Dandies
The English Hobby-Horse craze of 1819

known as 'dandies', hence this book's title. But for a while
the machine "obtained a very general footing throughout
the country".
A foreword to the book has been provided by Prof. Dr.
Hans-Erhard Lessing, the eminent biographer of the
original German inventor of the machine, Karl von Drais.
An appendix to the book, John Fairburn's 'New Pedestrian
Carriage', was first published in the early part of the year
1819, and contains an amusing and informative account
of the London scene at the time.
'Dashing Dandies' has 220 pages, over 100 mostly colour
illustrations and a comprehensive index. The first 100
copies only will constitute a Special Limited Edition, and
will contain an illustrated, numbered and dated certificate
giving the name of the book owner, signed by the author.

The detailed story of the forerunner of the pedal bicycle
was first told in the author's well received book “The
Pedestrian Hobby-Horse” published in 1998. Much
additional material has been discovered since then, and
the present work is the result of this.
The story of 'Dashing Dandies' is a colourful one. The
wooden 'hobby-horse' velocipede was propelled by
pushing with the feet on the ground. The enterprising
London coachmaker Denis Johnson obtained a patent, and
in the Spring and Summer of 1819 made hundreds of
machines in his workshop in Long Acre. The craze was
largely led by the fashionable young men of the day

Carl F. Burgwardt
Aug. 29, 1931—May 13, 2012
Carl F. Burgwardt, an executive of Community Steel
Corp. in Buffalo and director of the Pedaling History
Bicycle Museum in Orchard Park, died May 13 in
GreenFields Continuing Care Community in Lancaster.
He was 80.
Born in Hamburg, Mr. Burgwardt graduated from
Hamburg High School in 1949 and attended the
University of Buffalo and the Eastman School of Music
at the University of Rochester from 1949 to 1954. He
was a lifelong resident of Western New York and
resided in Orchard Park since 1959.
Before retiring in 1998, Mr. Burgwardt was chief
executive officer and chairman of the board of
Community Steel Corp., which his father founded. In
his more than 45-year career, he oversaw and
participated in the construction of many landmark
buildings in Western New York.
One of the last major projects before his retirement was
the installation of all the stairs and railings in the arena
now called First Niagara Center. Other projects
included several renovations to Ralph Wilson Stadium
and construction of three buildings at the U.S. Military
Academy at West Point and the Eisenhower Locks on
the St. Lawrence Seaway.

After the IVCA Rally in Gent, we took the Indonesians to
several bike-related places in the Netherlands. Among
others: the model bicycle city of Houten, the Batavus
factory and we had a ride in The Hague with the
Indonesian ambassador in the Netherlands.

Park and rebuilding it in 2006 with LED lighting.
With his wife, Clarice “Holmes” Burgwardt, he had a
long career in church music. When the couple left
Epiphany United Church of Christ in Buffalo to become
the music directors at East Aurora Presbyterian Church,
they were given a certificate from the choir celebrating
“Eleven Wonderful Years in Sing-Sing.”

In the 1970s, Mr. Burgwardt and his wife became
interested in vintage bicycles and in 1991, they
founded the Pedaling History Bicycle Museum.
Mr. Burgwardt continued his bicycle history by
authoring the book “Buffalo’s Bicycles—
Reflections on Buffalo’s Colossal and Overlooked
Bicycle Heritage” in 2001.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters,
Sally Lauck and Melinda Gibson; and a son, David.

longer hold the Guinness World Penny Stack Record. The
USA Wheelmen at a meet in Ohio yesterday established a
new line of 156 machines & riders. Congratulations to

I am a retired man, born in 1939 near Turin, NW Italy,
Piedmont Region . I live in Turin, about 50 km from
France, the city of Fiat cars and Frejus Cycles. My job
was in Biomedical field ( Cardiac Pacemakers R & D).
My interests are many: radio amateur with international
call IVQP, veteran cars and motorcycles little collector,
veteran cycles little collector also. I don't like only the
machines, but all connected things: magazines, photos,
books, maintenance booklets, post cards etc..
Now after over 20 years in this field, I have collected a
lot of cycles from c.1868 to c.1990 possibly not restored,
but preserved, and many of Piedmont manufacture. Some
example: c.1883 Singer Ordinary, c.1885 Premier
Tricycle in Piedmont at least from 1899 (date of the tax
plate), a c.1868 velocipede Michaux shape , a c.1894
safety by German Seidel & Nauman, all wood gent c.
1935 Vianzone of Turin, a 1950 stayer racing mod. by
Paratella of Turin, some racing items like Bianchi, Frejus,
Maino etc. Also some Bianchi military cycles for
Bersaglieri and cycles for baby.

Pierre Michaux, born 25th June 1813, attached rotary
cranks and pedals to a draisienne in 1861 creating the
Michaux velocipede or boneshaker. The Union
Velocipedique Belle Epogue (UBVE) are organizing the
‘Manifestation des Cycles Anciens as a Homage to Pierre
Michaux’ rally from Sunday 28th April to Wednesday 1st
May 2013. This will be at La Chaussee St Victor, a suburb
of Blois which is on the River Loire roughly halfway
between Orleans and Tours. They want to bring together
the largest number of Michaux velocipedes possible, but
also welcome results form this improvement around the
velocipede. Therefore all cycles, draisienne, Michaux, Big
be (penny) chainless, beam, crossframe, tricycle, etc could
participate to celebrate this event. See calendar for details.

About the Homepage
At the AGM in Gent, Belgium it was decided that I
should be approached as the new webmaster. Until now
Phillip Sanderson had done a great job to build up and
maintain the homepage for IVCA.
What’s going to happen is that the homepage needs to
change owner and web hotel, so basically I will remove
the old homepage from the American web hotel and build
up a new homepage in a Danish web hotel. It may sound
complicated and like a strange procedure but in the long
term it will be the easiest way for me to maintain the
homepage and work as the webmaster. The process will
start in September and be finished in October 2012.

vom September 2011, geführt von Dirk von Luchem, an.

zeigt ein schwarzes Bild auf weißem Hintergrund. Paul
hat auf Dirks Bitte hin eine Version dieses Bildes für die
neue Club Flagge gemacht, aber es gab einige leichte
Unterschiede. Ein Vorschlag, bei dem Original-Design zu
bleiben, wurde von Valerie Pears gemacht, gefolgt von
Dirk van Luchem. Er wurde einstimmig angenommen.

Der Schatzmeister präsentiert die Abrechnung für das Jahr
(siehe Anlage). Das Jahr begann mit einem Kontostand
von€7761.90. Die Ausgaben lagen bei €1412 (Druck und
Vertrieb des Journals waren die Hauptausgaben), das
Einkommen lag bei €101, womit ein Stand von €6454.99
bleibt. Da unser Kontostand die geschätzten Ausgaben des
Vereins für die nächsten 3 Jahre übersteigt, werden im
kommenden Jahr keine Mitgliedsbeiträge erhoben,
ausgenommen für neue Mitglieder (jährliche
Mitgliedschaft kostet €20 mit Versand des Newsletters
und €15 mit elektronischem Versand des Newsletters).

klassische Fahrradclubs in Indonesien aktiv sind. Er
ermutigt die Mitglieder, die Besuchergruppe aus
Indonisien willkommen zu heißen. Diese Clubs benutzen
alle Twitter und Facebook und engagieren sich in
Umweltkampagnen. Ihre Clubs sind sehr sozial.
Paul Farren schlägt vor, dass wir nächstes Jahr (2013) das
sechshundertjährige Bestehen des allgemein anerkannten
Datums der Erfindung des bone shaker oder selbstangetriebenen Fahrrades anerkennen könnten. Er

What Rod Charles doesn't know about the history of cycling in and around the Geelong region is not worth
knowing. Such an amazing fount of knowledge and
whilst it took a leap of imagination to conjure up the
scenes he described from over 100 years ago he brought
the history alive for us all. Ably assisted by many local
cyclists he had even scheduled a coffee stop and taken
orders before we started!
After a bugle rallying call from Gray McKinnel, the ride
started with the 100 or so assembled ready at the Town
Hall. The assortment of machines and riding attire was
amazing. Most had managed o find something appropriate
to the Tweed theme and there were some excellent tweed
costumes and bikes to match. The faces that I knew were Indonesia visits

Following the success of last year’s event, a race for
pennyfarthings was again included in the programme of
the London Nocturne Cycle races, held around the Smithfield Markets in London, England on Saturday, June 9th.
It was organised by Phil Saunders, who works for the City
of London. The race attracted 28 starters, and was sponsored by Brookes, makers of saddles, The race was over
30 minutes plus three laps of the criterium course. The
pace was on from the start, with the top half a dozen riders
soon pulling away from the main bunch. In the end it
came down to a race in four- Gray McKinnel of Australia,

have a weekly club ride on Sunday morning. The traffic in
the cities prohibits everyday cycling in many places.

old bicycle lovers in Indonesia) umbrella closely cooperate with Bike to Work, a government organisation for
the promotion of everyday cycling. Key words in Bike to
Work’s vocabulary are: repress pollution, health, durability.
This year, a delegation of ten Indonesian cyclists from
both KOSTI and Bike to Work visited the IVCA rally in
Belgium, plus a ten day extension for visits to Bike to
Work’s compeer in the Netherlands, the Fietsersbond.

the Indonesians and their Dutch hosts were invited to have
a bicycle ride with the Indonesian ambassador to the
Netherlands, starting in The Hague and ending with dinner at the embassy in Wassenaar. The ambassador, mrs
Priansari Retno Marsudi is a keen cyclist herself. The Indonesian party ended their European introductory visit
with a hop to Paris, to see the City’s public bicycle rental
system: the city council made a grand start with 20.000
rental bikes, but unfortunately a huge percentage is continuously stolen. The Indonesians grabbed the opportunity
to buy whatever bicycles and parts they could buy and
carry – each of the went home with heavy overweight
luggage plus ten old bicycles.

With a hilarious Saturday Night show and copious dinner and wine, a good parts market, surprise snacks along
the road, a dozen or so cafés, music and – most important
of all - nice company (participants from England, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France) it was really a
super weekend.

The Potato Ride
The 2nd Supergrandpa Memorial Ride

In 1951 Gustaf Håkansson was known all over Scandinavia as Supergrandpa after he went for a race through
Sweden from Haparanda in North to Ystad in South, but
was denied access cause he was 66 years old, 26 years
older than the age limit. Although Gustaf started out after
the official riders on their racer bicycles and he rode day
and night on his single speed old steady Kärnan bicycle,
he crossed the finish line one day before the official riders
came. He slept only 10 hours within the six days he rode.
After this “The Hare and the Tortoise ride” Gustaf got the
nickname Supergrandpa, and even today he is still well
known among many Swedish people. Gustaf died in 1987,
101 years old.
In 2007, 20 years after Supergrandpa died, Brian
Rosenberg decided to make a Memorial Ride for the
Swedish legend Gustaf Håkansson, to honor his achievement in the Sweden race 1951. The memorial ride should
go from Ystad to Haparanda on similar bicycles as Supergrandpa had. Lars-Erik Jonsson from Sweden was the
only person who was brave enough to follow Brian’s idea
and join him on this journey.
Shortly after this Memorial ride Brian approached LarsErik with another great idea; why not make a trilogy for
Supergrandpa; one ride every fifth year? Lars-Erik agreed,
so in 2012 the second Supergrandpa Memorial Ride
took place. This time it was to honor Supergrandpa for his
many long-distance rides he did up to Lapland. He went
there to see the midnight sun dance and to help the Sami
plant potatoes and collect berries from the forest. Once
again Brian and Lars-Erik was the only two persons brave
enough to do this ride; therefore Brian and Lars-Erik
packed up their two old steady single-speed bicycles; a
1939 Kärnan and a 1950 Monark and went for a 2,000 km
ride from Gantofta, the town where Supergrandpa lived
with his wife Maria, up to Kiruna the northern most city
of Sweden – way up in Lapland. While the first Memorial
Ride was called “The Supergrandpa Ride” this second
was called “The Potato Ride”.
Just like the first ride the rules was the same: No car was
allowed to follow, we had to carry all our luggage on the
bicycles and the bicycles should be without modern comfort. On the second Memorial ride Brian added a challenge, to eat and drink the same as Gustaf did on his
northern journeys. So the menu consisted of milk, bread
and bananas when Brian and Lars-Erik went off on their
second Memorial ride on the 9th of July reaching for their
final destination Kiruna on the 26th of July.
On their journey these two heroic Vikings rode on everything from plain asphalt, to bumpy graveled roads, on
rocky roads in sunny and rainy weather, and even hail and
freezing cold temperatures. The nature sceneries was absolutely beautiful; wide rivers, waterfalls, eagles, reindeer
and thousands of flowers, insects, small birds, etc, etc met
us on our ride. And as a bonus after we have crossed the
Arctic Circle; the nights was light and bright and the most

wonderful sunsets you can imagine became daily pleasures for us.
In a town in North Sweden we bought a small bag of
potatoes. Later that week we rode through a small village
called Vuotner in Lapland we saw an old farm placed
along the river Åbyälven. In the backyard there was a
vegetable garden. We went to the door and knocked on.
An old man, Mauritz Renberg met us in the doorway. We
gave him a full explanation of our mission; to help some
citizen in North Sweden plant potatoes. He got along with
our idea and immediately grabbed a shovel and went towards his garden. “Let us find a suitable place for your
potatoes”, he said, and we entered his potato garden and
planted our potatoes on his land. Our mission was fulfilled!
After a couple of days
in the beautiful town
Kiruna it was time to
end the journey. While
our bicycles were
shipped by bus we got
on the train and went
back home.
In 2017 a new adventure ride waits for us.

Das Fahrrad, eine der nobelsten Erfindungen der
Menschheit, hat eine lange Geschichte, die sich auch wissenschaftlich betrachten lässt. In Roeselare in Flandern
wurde die 23. International Cycling History Conference unter dem Motto „Wheels of Change“ (Das Rad
der Veränderung) abgehalten: eine Konferenz über die
Geschichte des Radfahrens (cycling), also nicht nur des
Fahrrads.
Die 58 000 Einwohner zählende Stadt Roeselare liegt 40
Kilometer südwestlich von Gent. Dort steht das renommierte Wielermuseum (Fahrradmuseum) Roeselare, das
die Konferenz zur Geschichte des Radfahrens ausrichtete.
Ein elegantes kleines Kongresszentrum gab den passenden Rahmen dazu ab. 1989 war die Konferenz gegründet worden, und zunächst war sie bloß eine Plattform

Radfahrens zu Freizeitzwecken seit 1866 in seinem Land

Landes zwischen 1879 und 1940 nach, und Morgan Elisabeth Barlow aus England sprach über Tessie Reynolds,
die 1893 als 16-Jährige mit dem Rad von Brighton nach
London fuhr, dabei besondere Klamotten trug und
dadurch berühmt wurde.
Dann: die Technik. Der Engländer Nicolas Clayton
dozierte über das 1886-er Modell „Courier“ der Firma
Singer. Er stellte die Frage: „Gibt es hier Leute wie mich,
denen beim Anblick dieses Rades kurz das Herz aussetzt
und der Atem rascher geht?“ Drei Teilnehmer hoben die
Hand, unter ihnen der sympathische Kanadier Ron Miller
(er fuhr auch, wie ein Uhrwerk, die 100 Meilen in Gent
(IVCA-Rallye), der sich später in einer Pause in die
Büsche schlug und in sein Handy sprach – aber nicht, um
seine Verlobte oder Frau zu sprechen, sondern um sich in
London zu erkundigen, ob die Teile für sein altes Sunbeam-Fahrrad eingetroffen wären. Sie waren.

war für Spezialisten, und dann stellte uns der Kanadier
Chris Morris die AW-Dreigang-Nabenschaltung vor,
entwickelt von William Brown für Sturmey Archer in
Nottingham. War schon am Lenker zu betätigen und
wurde von 1938 bis 1956 gebaut. Brillante Ideen tauchten
zur selben Zeit an verschiedenen Ecken der Welt auf, beobachtete Morris. Schön. Fichtel und Sachs hatten später
eine ähnliche Nabenschaltung. Das war ein temperamentvoller Vortrag.
Techniker bringen immer mehr Leidenschaft mit als
Soziologen, auch wenn das bei Heinrich Bültemann und
Gerd Böttcher nicht so ausgeprägt wirkte, doch sie sind
Deutsche mit einer stillen Passion für die Präzision. Der
Bremer Böttcher hat einen wunderbaren Dynamo des
Leipzigers Richard Weber nachgebaut, der 1886 patentiert
wurde, jedoch den Nachteil hatte, zu schwer und zu teuer
zu sein. Es war nicht seine Schuld, dass es bis 1910 keine
Dynamoproduktion mehr gab, und der Weg zu den heutigen Halogenlampen und Nabendynamos war lang.
Noch einmal zur Leidenschaft: Hier will ich den allerersten Vortrag der Konferenz nachtragen, weil ich ihm den
ersten Preis verleihen möchte. Er gefiel mir am besten,
weil er rhetorisch brillant war, es viele Bilder zu sehen
gab und es um Menschen und Hoffnungen ging. Ron
Thompson aus Südafrika referierte über die Rolle des
Fahrrads auf seinem Kontinent. Er sagte, das Fahrrad sei
eine Mobilitätsmaschine, eine Veränderungsmaschine.
„Cycling as sport and transport“, das war ein grandioses
Wortspiel. Vor 100 Jahren gewann übrigens ein südafrikanischer Radsportler eine Goldmedaille bei den
Olympischen Spielen. „Where there’s a will, there’s a
wheel.“ Afrikanische Frauen fahren nicht Rad, das gehört
sich nicht, aber kleine Mädchen fangen nun damit an.
Thompson arbeitet in einem Projekt, um junge Menschen
in Afrika ans Rad zu gewöhnen. Die betreffende Seite

Johnson. Uff!
Jetzt waren wir (und sind wir) aber geschafft. Wissenschaft ist ganz schön anstrengend. Die Teilnehmer bereiteten sich auf den Gala-Abend vor, und der verbliebene
einzige Journalist fuhr, sein Presse-Schild um den Hals,
nachdenklich mit seinem Rad übers flache Land nach Osten, nach Waregem, voll der Eindrücke und immer noch
(und vielleicht sogar noch mehr) der Meinung, dass das
Fahrrad eine der größten Erfindungen der Menschheit sei.

The Twenty-third International
Cycling History Conference with the
title ‘Wheels of Change’ was held in
Roeselare in Flanders.
Dear cycling friends!
The bicycle, one of the most important inventions humankind has ever made, has a long history which
can also be considered from an academic point of view.
The conference was about the history of cycling, not just
about the bicycle itself. Roeselare, a town with a population of 58,000 is situated 40km southwest of Ghent in
Belgium. In this city there is the famous Wielermuseum
Roeselare (Museum for Cycling), which was equipped by
the conference for the history of cycling. A small elegant
conference centre was used as the suitable venue. I myself
had a big media-sign hanging around my neck. I stayed in
the camping ground to save money and travelled on two
days 30kmeach way over flat country to Roeselare to attend the presentations. Of course, I travelled by bicycle.
The conference was first held in 1989 as a gathering of collectors and technical enthusiasts. The present
conference is the 23rd and, according to observer com-

ments, the best conference so far – with a comprehensive,
broad programme with academic contributions.
The First Day
Now I am intending to briefly summarise the
presentations so you can get an idea about the comprehensive topics of the conference. The wheels are turning and
history progresses.
Daniel Shea, a young Professor of Literature
from Tennessee, talked about the agricultural crisis in
England from 1870 to 1895. Many country people
flooded the cities where life was moving faster and country life was considered idyllic. Thousands travelled to the
country side on bicycles where it was more relaxing; the
‘weekend’ was established. In 1881 Queen Victoria purchased her first bicycle. In 1867 in the country of Canada
two years later ‘The Canadian Wheelman’: the first bicycle clubs were founded.
Glen Norcliffe and Ron Miller talked about the
heroic time when young single men took to the bicycle
and only wanted to ride (today is similar, only it is the
black BMW) and the 1000 miles from Niagara to Boston
presented no obstacle to their adventure. The cyclists considered them selves an elite group and developed new
confidence compared to their US-American colleagues.
Santiago Gorostiza compared the Tour de France
triumph of Federico Bahamontes in 1959 as an example to
illuminate the years between 1950 and 1975. These years
were called the Franco-years (in Spain) in which until
1962 the bicycle remained without challenge - until the
SEAT 600 (first built in 1957) initiated affordable motorised driving in Spain.
The Englishman Daniel Friebe reported about the
Eddy-Merckx-biography and confirmed that his search for
a secret remained without success. Merckx was just the
best, had mental strength and only always wanted to win.
So he became a ‘cannibal’. Today he is 67 years old and
he travels as a respected patron and businessman throughout the world.
Thomas Ameye (Belgium) mentioned three
sports persons – among them also a woman, Hélène
Dutrieu (1877-1961) -, who started as a cyclist in 1890,
then changed to car motor sport and finally to aviation.
The love of speed made her famous and rich. The presenter revealed that in 1900 Belgium was the most intensively industrialised country in the world. 100 years ago,
Odile Defraeye was the first Belgian winner of the Tour
de France - ‘from zero to hero’.
Then the sociologists gave their presentation.
Bart Vanreusel pointed out that according to a study, die

Nicolas Lefevre ruined the myth presented by the
media that professional cyclists usually come from the
lower classes of society. Sociologists like to surround
themselves with flash vocabulary, which are called identity hopping or heroes without borders. However, one
cannot help but think that, their picture about the cycling
sport has remained stuck in the nineteen fifties (1950s).
They ask like all other academics always only for figures

and data and if at conferences often the production of bicycles of a country was mentioned, one can easily locate
these figures.
During a break at the conference Tony Huntington said to me: ‘The figures for the bicycle production are
of little interest to me; I would like to know more about
the labourer.’ However, history about the ‘lower class’
and everyday stories became of interest to the universities
much later.
Then the aesthetics: Nicholas Oddy from Glasgow had issues with the plain trophies for successful cyclists and Scottford Lawrence described the difficulties to
portray the cyclist as a sculptor and to portray him with
three dimensions.
After that Ana Santos talked about Lisbon where
in about 1895 magazines for cyclists existed and there
were about 8000 cyclists. However, these bicycles disappear after the world wars and can neither be seen in articles nor on fotos. Where did they remain? I believe: in
the south of Europe it is too hot, and a male dominated
‘Culure of Power’ portrays the cyclist as a weak person.
One drives a car, whenever this is possible.
The first day ended with a presentation from
David V. Herlihy (with Thomas Burr) who established
that the manufacturing of bicycles in France hardly
changed during the German-French War 1870/71 and until 1874. By the way Herlihy in his book ‘Bicycle’ has
presented a comprehensive history of the bicycle. He
wrote in his last book ‘The Lost Cyclist’ which is about
the German-American Frank Lenz, who in 1892 wanted to
cycle around the world, but vanished one year later in
Turkey.
The Second Day
On the second day, conference participants travelled by train to Knokke to be present at the start of a
stage of the ‘Tour de Belgique’. I did not attend on this
day. On this day there were only four presentations.
However, the story presented by the Czech Jan Kralik
about a ‘Hobby Horse’ in a museum in Prague, would
have been of great interest to me.
The Third Day
Three young academics talked about their results.
Stjin Knuts from Belgium introduced the story of
cycling as a hobby in his country since 1866.
Sue Yen Tjong Tjin Tais from the Netherlands
presented about the rise of the bicycle to a national symbol for the country between 1879 and 1940.
Morgan Elisabeth Barlow from England talked
about Tessie Reynolds who, as a 16-year old, cycled on
her bicycle from Brighton to London in 1893 wearing
rational costume and becoming famous for it.
Then: technical. The Englishman Nicolas Clayton lectured about the 1886 model ‘Courier’ produced by
the company Singer. He asked the question: ‘Are there
people like me present whose heart stops briefly and
breathing increases by looking at this bicycle? Three participants raised their hands, amongst them the likeable

Canadian Ron Miller. Later during a break he hid behind
the bushes to make a call on his mobile phone – but not to
talk to his fiancee or wife, but to find out from London if
parts for his old Sunbeam-bicycle had arrived. They had.
Robert Sterba from the Czech Republic talked
about various types of Michaux-type machines in museums. This was for specialists.
Then the Canadian Chris Morris introduced the
AW-three hub gear which was developed by William
Brown for Sturmey Archer in Nottingham. Could be used
from the handle bar und was built in the years from 1938
to 1956. Morris observed that at the same time brilliant
ideas in different corners around the world appeared.
Beautiful. Later Fichtel and Sachs had similar hub gear.
This was a presentation full of emotions.
Technical people always show more passion than
sociologists, even if this is not so obvious with Heinrich

on a project to introduce young people in Africa to getting

In St Thomas, Ontario where the Canadian Wheelman's
Association was founded in 1883 ...... in the company of
Jumbo the Elephant of Barnum and Bailey's Circus who
was killed near this spot by a train in 1885. Jumbo was a
large African elephant that was born and taken to the Paris
Zoo in 1861, sold to London Zoo in 1865, and then sold to
Barnum and Bailey's Circus in 1882. He/ she did not
have tusks - they were added as bit of artistic license.

Premier jour :
Le Century sur une boucle de 20 km nous
conduisait dans la campagne environnante sur des

atteindre les 100 miles (soit 160 km pour qui n’est pas
anglo-saxon). Boissons, encas et ravitaillement étaient
offerts aux postes de contrôle. Pour ceux qui étaient peu

J’ai fait l’acquisition d’un catalogue de vélos Peugeot
datant de 1892 ainsi que de quelques affiches qui
n’avaient été que très récemment réimprimées. Voici les
résultats des courses disputées l’après-midi sous un léger
crachin et par une température très fraîche : Pour les

Troisième jour
Plus de 250 cyclistes en tenue d’époque se mirent
en route en direction de Gand sous les regards curieux et
admiratifs des passants. Heureusement que le parcours
était quasi plat pour les quelques tricycles qui étaient
également de la fête. Aux vieux vélos s’étaient invités
également des grands-bis et des draisiennes et de
nombreux vélos avec des jantes sans pneu, datant d’avant
1935. Nous fûmes accueillis par le maire et des
représentants des autorités de la ville. Ce fut une
magnifique journée ensoleillée qui permit à la gent
féminine de se présenter sous leurs plus beaux atours. En
sécurité nos vélos, furent déposés dans un enclos en face
de la cathédrale, et l’objet d’un grand intérêt de la part des
badauds et des photographes du dimanche.
Nous pûmes visiter à loisir la cité historique et goûter une
nosette, une spécialité locale.
Le banquet d’adieu nous réunit autour des tables
admirablement décorées avec des ustensiles qui nous
préparaient aux trois entrées suivies d’un buffet de fruits
de mer et de desserts appétissants.
Pour ma part j’ai apprécié la musique et ce rock invitant à
la danse. Du vin et des fleurs furent distribués à
l’impressionnante équipe des bénévoles de l’organisation,
dirigée par Pierre de Perre et Dirk van Luchem que nous
félicitons encore
pour cette
merveilleuse
hospitalité belge
arrosée par la bière.
Cette réunion fut
une merveilleuse
occasion de
rencontre,
notamment lors des
repas, permettant
d’échanger nos impressions avec nos amis étrangers,
anciens et nouveaux.
La langue ne semblait
pas être un obstacle à
une conversation avec
l’aide d’autres amis et,
en cas de besoin, de
gestes. Qui n’est pas
fier de faire admirer son
cycle ancien et d’en
vanter ses mérites dans
plusieurs langues ?
Nous appartenons à une
grande institution
internationale, pas vrai !

Je suis enchante de pouvoir accueillir a Veseli nad
Moravou. Elle se trouve dans le plat paysage de la Moraie
du Sud de la Republique tcheque. Elle est située sur les
deux rives de la Morava avec beaucoup de monuments
historiques et religieux, éléments de paysage d’eau et
techniques, folklore vivant, vin de qualité et spécialités
gastronomiques. Je crois que vous vous sentirez bien chez

L’année 2013 est remarquable parce que nous fêtons le
100e Tour de France. Je me prépare soigneusement pour
cette Enterprise. Je vues participer au Tour a mon haut
vélo, une journée avant le peloton. Nous pourrions nous
rencontrer même pendant le Tour. La place n’est pas
importante, en faisant du vélo historique la joie ne dépend
pas de la longueur des parcours, mais du sentiment de la
liberté et de la conscience des liaisons historiques.

April 28-May 1 HOMMAGE À PIERRE MICHAUX. The Union Vélocipedique de la Belle Époque (UVBE) is
organizing a "Manifestation des Cycles Anciens" a tribute to the work of Pierre Michaux.
This meet, which is open to all enthusiasts, will be held in La Chausse St Victor, near Blois, in the Loire Valley,
France This is a most picturesque region, renowned for its gastronomy and its wines. Programme includes a cycle

IVCA Rally. Britt-Marie JONSSON proposed a meet in Southern Sweden.

IVCA Rally. A proposal was presented by Andrey Myatiev for a meet in Russia, at a location about 110 km
south of Moscow, close to the Oka River (possibly near to Kolomna). He is seeking support from local
officials and administration. There is a museum nearby.
IVCA Rally. Helge Schultz proposed a rally to mark the bicentenary of Karl Drais’s invention of the
laufmaschine, probably in the Mannheim/Karlsruhe area.
