It could be something like "I really liked the way I handled that situation.” The compliment can be deep or superficial. Highlight the positive aspect of every situation you encounter. If you practice this often, you're on your way to liking yourself a whole lot better. Get Physically Fit: Simple daily exercises to boost your blood flow every morning will do. You will feel better, your mood will be more positive, and you will be more congenial with other people. The more positive energy you give out, the more beautiful you become - and the more people will be inclined to return positive vibes to you, too. Treat Yourself: Set aside time once a week to do something just for you. It could be anything from watching a cheesy movie to walking your dog in the park. As long as it's time for you, • doing what you want to do. Do A Good Deed: Do something good for someone else. You will find that things like volunteering at a homeless shelter, or even helping somebody who is lost by giving them proper directions, will make you feel good for the rest of the day. You will be doing something worthwhile and when you see how badly off some people are, you will start to appreciate your life more and be grateful for what you have. Texting: Reminders and messages are important, and we all learn early on that unkind words can hurt. In that spirit, text a compliment or kind word to a friend. Positive Parent Involvement (PPI) is a community-wide network of parents who are dedicated to working together to promote healthy lifestyles for our youth. PPI meetings are open to all parents. YOUTH SPEAK “Remind me that I’m worthwhile.” “Encourage me to give tough things my best shot.” “Understand that I hope things will go well for me in the future.” The Power of a Positive Identity Our identities are always in a state of flux. Depending on what’s currently happening in your life, you may feel confident or unsure, optimistic about the future or pessimistic, that you have some control or little control. These ups and downs are normal for you and they’re normal for your child. It’s also normal for your child’s identity to vary from situation to situation. For example, your child may have a much more positive sense of her or his athletic “self” than social “self” (or vice versa). What’s important, however, is what a person’s identity is like most of the time. People who have a strong sense of self still maintain that sense even when difficulties arise. They continue to be hopeful and optimistic, when circumstances seem to be trying to persuade them otherwise. What do you think of the identity your child is forming? Is this someone you like? Is this someone who surprises you at times? Is this someone who, overall, has a sense of purpose, power, worth, and promise? While identity is partially determined by genetics, you still have a lot of power to bring out the best in your child. The way you interact with your child helps your child feel loved or unloved. The ways you respond to your child’s successes, mistakes, actions, and words also build either a sense of positive or negative identity. The positive identity assets tie in closely with the support assets. A child who feels loved, supported, and nurtured is more apt to feel good about her or himself. Children whose home, school, neighborhood, and community see the best in them are more apt to bring out the best in themselves. The choice is ours. Love children and children will learn to love themselves. Check the areas of strength in your child’s life. Personal power- Your child feels he or she has control over things that happen to her or him. Self-esteem- Your child reports having a high self-esteem. Sense of purpose- Your child reports that her or his life has a purpose. The TMYBA Board has been meeting since September to plan for the upcoming season. As always, our goal is to continue to improve the experience for our young athletes. I would like to highlight a few items for the upcoming season: The TMYBA Open House will be held in the Homestead cafeteria on Sunday, February 13 from 1:30 – 4:00. TMYBA will continue its partnership with the Positive Coaching Alliance. We require that all first year coaches take an on-line training course prior to the season. We will also be asking returning coaches to take a new PCA course “Culture, Practices and Games.” TMYBA will be covering the registration fee for the courses. Further information will be provided to coaches as the season approaches. The Rookie Softball League completed its second season last year and was a big success. We would like to encourage girls in K5 to 2nd grade to register for the upcoming season. Look for further information inside in Rookie Girls Needed. The Board has established the following registration fees for this season: By March 1 Rookie Leagues$100 All Other Leagues$135 After March 1 $150 $185 The experience our kids have in sports is greatly influenced by the quality of the coaching. We will continue to provide offseason opportunities for coaches to learn about teaching baseball and softball fundamentals. We will also continue our partnership with the Positive Coaching Alliance (“PCA”) to help our coaches teach the important life lessons that can be learned through sports. Rookie Girl Players Needed TMYBA started a Rookie Softball League for girls in grades K5 – 2nd in 2009. The league has been very well received and the girls have had lots of fun. The league is a low pressure way to expose young girls to the joys of playing softball. Practices and games are held on Tuesday and Thursday nights at Steffen fields. The majority of girls in Rookie Softball in 2010 were in 2nd grade and will be promoted to Girls’ Minor League this season. Our goal is to continue to field four teams in this league so if you have a daughter in K5 – 2nd grade, please consider signing her up. Veterans Eligible 9th Grade Boys Again this season, 9th grade boys that do not make their spring or summer high school baseball team will be eligible to play in the TMYBA Major League. Since most high school squads don’t have their tryouts until well after TMYBA rosters are completed, we request any ninth grader who may want to play TMYBA to register no later than March 1. Spring Training Winter Open Gym Time TMYBA is providing several opportunities for players and coaches to improve their skills during the winter months. They are for TMYBA players and coaches only and are free of charge. If anyone has questions, please contact Tom Price at [email protected]. Open Gyms The Lake Shore gym will be open from 8:45 am – 10:30 am on four Saturday mornings in February and March. Dates are February 19 and March 5, 12 and 26. Players will have the opportunity to work on their fielding, pitching and hitting skills. All players must be accompanied by a guardian to participate. No exceptions. Guardians will be asked to sign a waiver prior to participating in their first session. Coaching Clinics TMYBA requires that all coaches attend one of our coaching clinics. We will be offering three clinics in March. The dates are Tuesday, March 15; Monday, March 21 and Saturday, March 26. Please see the Play Ball! section of the newsletter for times and location. Hitting, fielding and throwing mechanics and drills will be covered at each of the clinics. Please check the website for further information. The Bullpen Help Wanted Board Members Wanted TMYBA is run by volunteers and several of our long-standing Board members are nearing the end of their tenure. Serving on the TMYBA Board is a fulfilling activity that allows Board members to give back to our community by providing an opportunity for our children to play baseball and softball. In order to avoid having the Board’s activities fall on fewer people, please consider volunteering if you have a child in TMYBA. If interested, contact Tom Price at [email protected]. Sponsors If interested in sponsoring your child’s team, the cost is $300 for one team or $500 for two teams. Sponsors may place their company name or logo on team uniforms. TMYBA is a 501(c)(3) organization and all donations are tax-deductible. Interested sponsors should contact Tom Price at [email protected]. Umpires Looking to be outdoors this summer and earn some good money? Do you love baseball or softball? Are you confident in your abilities to make quick and accurate decisions based on league rules? If yes to the above, TMYBA wants you to be an umpire for the upcoming 2011 season. Umpires must be at least 12 years old and have played at least two years of baseball or softball. Adult umpires are also welcome. If interested, please sign up at www.tmyba.org or at our Open House on February 13. All umpires will be required to attend a training course in March.
