King Ping
King Ping – Tippen Tappen Tödchen
Former police detective Clemens “King” Frowein,
now a local zoo’s penguin keeper, has got too much
of everything: hair, fat, and freaky friends. Since being suspended from the police, he has been living in
the back room of “Biggy Baby’s”. It’s the cool place
to be in town and there’s always a party going on
when hair dressing drag queen Biggi hits the stage.
Actually, life could go on like this forever.
Then, King bumps into his former police colleague
and they get completely drunk. The next morning,
King’s pal is found at the bottom of a steep stairway, with a broken neck. The police believe it’s an
accident: but now the King is back! Knowing for
certain that the “stair killer” will strike again and
launching his own investigation, he joyfully tramples
on his uncool successor’s toes, chief inspector Ellbroich. In order to have a very special task force at
his side, King enlists gay brothel bouncer Woelfken,
two dopey zookeepers, and a chain-smoking neighbor. Unfortunately, all the while King is persistently
haunted by the ultimate journalistic pain-in-the-arse. It is no wonder that this adds fuel to the fire of
the entire frenzy. For King, this is a minor distraction,
as he unstoppably rolls his way through this comic
crime story, accompanied by a killer soundtrack as
hip as death.

Cuban Lies
Lügen auf Kubanisch
The talented but unemployed Cuban actress Ana decides to sign up as a protagonist in a documentary film about
prostitution – first and foremost so that
her family will be able to afford a new refrigerator. She plays her part with such
great authenticity and believability, that
she soon becomes the focus of the film.
Inevitably, this brings total chaos to Ana’s
real life. When, on top of everything, the
director Helmut falls in love with her,
the carefully constructed tissue of lies
threatens to fall apart. The film shows the
everyday life and survival strategy in an
unadorned yet humorous way of a woman who has become trapped in her own
web of lies. “Cuban Lies” is an eloquent,
humorous and lively comedy.

Road to Paradise
Paradies
Actually, the two detectives Bibi Fellner
and Moritz Eisner had just finished their
last criminal case and wanted to return
to their hometown. But their comeback is
suddenly interrupted due to terrible news.
Bibi’s father died. Adventitiously her father
left Bibi an envelope. Much to her surprise
the letter leads her to an unknown safe-deposit box: her father, who was totally
penniless, leaves his daughter more than
30,000 euros! But where does the money
come from? Mysteriously the financial heritage of another home resident, who died
two weeks before, was also located in this
safe-deposit box.
During their further investigations they find
out that the male residents of the nursing
home went with a group of senior citizens
to Hungary every Wednesday. And every
Thursday they’ve brought money to the
bank. First, it looks like medication smuggling to Bibi and Moritz, but then, after the
series of deaths, the investigators find traces of crystal meth at the autopsy.

Deep End
Abgründe
A guest falls onto the roof of a taxi from the top floor of a hotel
near Vienna‘s Opera House. He is dead. But is it suicide or murder? The dead man is Dr. Bansari, an Iranian diplomat and nuclear
physicist. The Iranian Embassy and Austrian Foreign Ministry immediately weigh in. Both try to keep the case strictly under wraps,
but the investigating team of Moritz Eisner and Bibi Fellner will
not be deterred from pressing ahead with their enquiries. In the
process they stumble across business dealings that a lobbyist is
pursuing for a high-tech company. This company manufactures
pumps and valves that could possibly be used in atomic reactors.
A major deal has just been closed and the goods are thought to
be making their way to Iran via third countries. This, at least, is the
possible assumption of the Israeli secret services, who are suspected of having a hand in the death of Dr. Bansari and of sending
an assassination squad.
Five years after her abduction, a girl succeeds in escaping
from her dungeon. Shortly afterwards her abductor commits
suicide. When the criminal’s home is finally demolished, detectives Moritz Eisner and Bibi Fellner make another gruesome
find on the site. The body of their missing colleague is found
in the basement vault of the house. And she appears to have
died of thirst. Convinced that the death of their colleague was
cold-blooded murder, the detectives set out to find the truth
and in the process stumble upon a network of criminal activity
that leads them to the very highest echelons of the police and
judiciary.

Lost & Found
Liebe im Gepäck
A lot has changed for Simon Polt, a country constable who has taken voluntary retirement. Professionally, he is following a new path, and the joint future with his longterm girlfriend, Karin Walter, has unexpectedly appeared in a completely new light. Polt
scarcely still has contact with the police who now watches over the small villages in the
Wiesbach valley. He is only friendly with Norbert Sailer, an officer of the peace who is
exactly to his liking. But the corpse of a stranger shatters the equilibrium of Simon Polt’s
peaceful new world. Nobody claims to have known the dead man, but some seem nevertheless to have known more about him than they are willing to admit to the police.

Jail sentence or community service? 100 days pushing senior
citizens around in their wheelchairs in a retirement home is a
100 times better than life behind bars. Wanted by the cops,
kicked out of his own band, Rocco hits bottom. But his seniors
haven’t forgotten him, and now they want him to form a band
with them so that they can win the band contest’s 100,000
euro prize and buy their freedom from the hated home director. “Rocco and the Pacemakers” is born, and they’re out to
rock’n’roll!
An extraordinary comedy - so successful that a second part followed.
Since their big hit, “Live is Life”, Rocco and the Pacemakers
have made the most of their fame with countless gigs. But even
though their music makes them feel youthful, they haven’t actually got any younger. After one of the band members has a dizzy spell, the group, with Degenhard and Sissy leading the way,
decide to put an end to the tour. Rocco takes their wishes on
board with a heavy heart. And so they return to the retirement
home, where in the meantime Rocco’s flame, Marina, has become
the warden. The gentle Marina may have put a stop to the harsh
regime of her predecessor, Frau Glück, but now the pendulum is
swinging too far in the other direction.
Rosaria, an Italian teacher, loses her entire family in a major
earthquake. To get over the trauma, she travels to the Austrian
countryside with her pupils. There the beautiful Italian woman
immediately arouses the interest of brothers Josef and Franz.
When Rosaria and Josef fall in love with one another shortly
afterwards, her decision not to return to her homeland, but
instead to stay with Josef, meets with disapproval from his
brother, Franz. Serious family conflicts and hostilities within
the village community threaten to destroy the new beginning
that Rosaria had hoped for and the love between her and Josef.
Ilayda, a 17-year old Turkish schoolgirl, lives with her very well integrated family in a foreign country. Since the death of her father,
she herself has focused heavily on her religion and is wearing a
headscarf again. As a result she is becoming increasingly isolated from her class at school. She is a keen swimmer and secretly
pursues her passion at night-time in the school’s swimming pool.
When her sports teacher, Martha, becomes aware of this, she
tries to bring Ilayda back into the class community through the
school’s swimming team. The problem is that she would have to
take off her headscarf and burka and swim in an ordinary swimming costume for the competition …

The Nosy Brothers
Die Detektive
Felix has been trying to cope with his life since his
wife passed away as a result of a diving accident on
their honeymoon. But then he is hit by another fateful blow. His father, Wilhelm, a private investigator
by profession, dies of a heart attack during a surveillance operation. Reading his will, Felix discovers
that there is another son, one who does not follow
the rules of the family.
Their father’s will make the two very different
half-brothers joint owners of the detective agency.
When they visit the premises, they are drawn into
their first case – actually their father’s last. And
somehow the two of them discover that they enjoy
detective work – even though Felix would prefer to
approach the case more analytically, rather than intuitively, like Ronnie.
This new 10-part crime-series amazes with a huge
portion of comedy and charm at the same time.

Julie, Maria, Sabine and Henriette – four
remarkable women sharing an exceptional
pastime - join forces in order to bring some
excitement to the boring village life by suspecting murder in all those cases which initially seem to point to the opposite. Never
failing to be present at any village funeral, they investigate the deaths by unnatural cause in a highly unconventional way.
In the second season of the series, Henriette helps out Julie with a friendly turn,
indispensable to Julie’s life and as a consequence has to go to jail for quite some
time. Mona, a young community doctor
with investigative skills and medical expertise, joins the team. Due to her work abroad
her sister Lola quickly takes her place in
the third season and it doesn’t take long
until the next case gets them going.

Dr. Leo Benedict is a forensic psychologist. His world is the minds of mentally
deranged criminals. It doesn’t matter if
it’s Cara Horvath calling on him as a police expert or someone else asking him for
help in a private matter, Leo knows that
every crime starts in the psyche - and consequently can only be solved there, too.
When Leo looks into a series of mysterious suicides, he stumbles across the shadowy pharmaceutical company Janus and is
stunned when he discovers what is actually behind the suicides. “Janus” is a criminal

half family drama that turns out to be an
enthralling detective story.

of the farmers. Both were, of course, firmly
convinced that their way of doing things
was the right way. Furthermore, Meso had
a ravishingly beautiful daughter and Nea a
good looking son. And since the Stone Valley was spacious but not that enormous, it
was inevitable that one day the two young
Stone Valley kids would run into one another. And so the whole mess came to a
head. For now it was, so to speak, an affair
of the heart. And when it came to affairs of
the heart, regrettably even in those days,
people weren’t prepared to stand for much
nonsense.
Braunschlag is a more or less idyllic place in Austria, whose
inhabitants are a league of their own. Among others there’s
a former beauty queen, a UFO landing site operator, a pair of
weird doctors and the governor’s nephew. Gerhard Tschach,
mayor of Braunschlag, has a problem: After several failed business ventures, his town is bankrupt. Therefore, with his best
friend, disco-owner Richard Pfeisinger, he decides to fake a
Marian apparition, to make tourists flood the ailing town and
bring about the hoped-for financial recovery. Braunschlag
starts to flourish, but the two hard-drinking men soon lose
control. Somewhere between the delusions of the locals, pressure from the state capital, intractable marital problems and
the Vatican, the situation escalates more and more – and the
miracle of Braunschlag is becoming a nightmare fast.
Paul Kemp is a mediator by profession. He is a trained psychologist and sociologist with a big heart and an understanding for all
kind of people’s problems.
The clients who come to his practice come from all sections of society and guide him into the field of human shortcomings, where
he is needed – and able – to demonstrate his skills as a mediator and arbitrator which result often in highly original solutions.
But whilst he deals imaginatively and nimbly with the conflicts of
others, Paul Kemp has very little grip on his private life and family, where things are increasingly getting out of hand. He has to
face his wife’s relationship with their neighbour, Christian, and has
problems with his business partner, who has driven the company
into debt and made a run for it. And Paul Kemp is also involved in
a short-term relationship with Lisa that is developing into a longterm catastrophe.

Whether sparks are flying with the neighbours, your best friend has been the victim
of a crime or a drug dealer is making trouble – the police is there to take care of law
and order. However, cops are only human,
too. Parents who refuse to believe the news
that their child has died, teachers who are
afraid of their pupils and friendships that
are put to severe tests are as much on the
agenda as the kind of questions that cops
also have to ask themselves over and over
again, such as are compromises essential,
or is it more important to stick to one’s
own principles? What is stronger – one’s
profession or family ties?

“Is everybody out there? Yesssss!” The famous tag-line used to
start the show by Mr. Punch or “Kasperl”, as he is called in German-speaking countries, is well known by every child. The household name of the Austrian childrens television has entertained his
fans for over five decades. To ensure the traditional children’s hero
will be able to amuse children for another 50 years the ORF has
revamped the show and redesigned its star. The core of the show
is an imaginative adventure story, presented in a traditional puppet-show style, with Kasperl and his friends. Interactivity is an integral part of the show as Kasperl rhymes and sings with the kids.
Kasperl’s adventures are about friendship, helping others and
solving problems by using one’s wits. “Kasperl” represents entertainment for young and old – traditional puppet-show at its finest!
The focus of every story in “Get the Knack!” is the question “how
does it actually work?” The aim is to bring about the “Eureka effect”
for every viewer as the penny finally drops at the end of each item.
Every episode is a grab bag of “Eureka” surprises – nevertheless,
there are recurrent themes to which the viewer can look forward.
Subjects range from the high-tech to supposedly boring everyday
objects. In exciting experiments viewers discover, for example, how
to make clouds in a plastic bottle or how to make a piece of soap
swim. Foolproof instructions and simple ingredients mean that the
experiments can immediately be imitated at home.
“Get the Knack!” is an entertaining science show with modern
visual language and a high cutting rate.

How does a magician get a rabbit into his

tagline of this children’s show! The makers
of Explorer Express whisk young viewers
away to the astonishing world of artifice
and magic. Children are given an insight
into the world of artists and illusionists
through exciting magic tricks and handicraft work, which they are encouraged to
imitate. Some of the best kept magician’s
secrets are also revealed: Cuddly toys miraculously disappear and heads are made
to turn around!
Big and small miracles, the obvious spectacular as well as hidden sensations – all
this is shown in the popular science magazine for children “7 Wonders” created and
hosted by Thomas C. Brezina. Together
with his pilot “Nelson”, he is travelling the
world in their flying Wonder Express “Crazy Lola” to present seven wonders each
show - be it the Dead Sea, in which Thomas reads a newspaper whilst swimming, the
language of dolphins, historical sensations
that still astound us today and “do it yourself wonders” that show children how they
too can create something amazing. There
are things to marvel at everywhere, not
only far away but right around the corner.
Why does the koala bear have a speckled
posterior? Can plants sweat or air be liquid? And how can you transfer news from
one continent to another without any electricity? These and many more questions
are answered in this extraordinary and
successful series for young researchers
from 8 to 12 years. Traveling through time,
space, air and water, Thomas C. Brezina
and Kati Bellowitsch take you on the special Explorer Express en route to “discover,
experience, investigate and do it yourself”.
During these exciting trips the two presenters reveal facts about nature, animals,
technology, physics, chemistry and history.
They also conduct experiments for viewers
to do themselves at home. Each episode of
the series features interesting stories, experiments and vivid explanations.
Nini is a wild flower. Her world is colourful and full of little miracles. Nini has got a lot of friends and a lot of stories to tell. She
is friends with Fred the frog, who wants to whistle. She meets
Teethie the traveling toothbrush, she laughs together with the
violet flowers Villi, Velli, Valli and Vulli. She finds Lucky the four
leave-clover and she knows the funniest stories about Chikki and
Rikki the crazy chicks. Nini’s cousin Daisy is sometimes sad and
her other cousin Lilli gets bored easily. But when Nini starts telling
her stories everybody cheers up! Let’s visit Nini’s world!
The Quiz Castle, a combination of 3D animation and film elements,
is a funny show in which the audience gets to guess along. It specifically caters to the needs of pre-school children. The two ghosts,
Rattlehead and Pizza Poltergeist, invite viewers into their castle to
take part in fun and entertaining games and quizzes. They have to
answer tricky questions in each and every hall and in each and every
chamber within the hallowed walls. And they get to learn amazing
tricks and recognize optical illusions. “Quiz Castle” was developed in
cooperation with the British Company “Absolutely Cuckoo”.

Mike is Looking for Happiness
Herr Ostrowski sucht das Glück
A World Through Glasses
Reiseckers Reisen
Michael Ostrowski is on the search for happiness. With roguish humour and a dash
of (self) mockery in his luggage, he meets
with people who tell him about their own
personal strategies for happiness. Witty,
entertaining and a little off the wall, his
travels bring him into contact with a wide
variety of people and their routes to happiness, for example the worlds of esotericism, sex, gaming and solitude. “Mike is
Looking for Happiness” is an entertaining,
informative report and one of the most unconventional voyages of discovery into the
innermost desires and hopes of mankind.
How good do you know your own country and its people? Who and what hides in remote regions or in the
hustle and bustle of the metropolis. “A World through
glasses”, an innovative and personal travel report in a
series of episodes, takes you across various regions
and cities in your own country. “Hello, I’m Michael and
I am a documentary film producer. There is a little
camera in my glasses and a microphone in my jacket.”
This could be one possible greeting of the host, meeting his surprised opponent. “It is told in your village,
that you have quite an interesting and extraordinary
hobby. Is that true? Do you have time to show me,
what it is all about?” Before the answer is even made
we are already standing in the door of our respondent
and the next moment our camera in the glasses makes
us part of a new story, where everything is possible:
sometimes sad, sometimes weird, sometimes funny
or simply ordinary. Alongside Neo-farmer and professional butterfly catchers, street sweeper turn out to be
professional ex-soccer players, former box-champions
turn into world changers and house builders become
globetrotters.

to live a quiet life discreetly in their council house – at

the Descheks minds and soon they have to face countless problems and turbulences as curious neighbours
begin to suspect that something odd is going on here.

Life Ball
Life Ball
Vienna Opera Ball
Der Wiener Opernball
Celebrating the beauty of life and the diversity of world cultures,
the Life Ball reinvents the great Viennese Ball tradition with glamorous, outlandish performances and inspirational speeches. Since
1993, world famous personalities and artists have lent their voices and support to Europe’s largest and most spectacular annual charity event dedicated to raising support for the worldwide
fight against HIV and AIDS. With their personal impulses and involvement, the likes of Bill Clinton, Sharon Stone, Sir Elton John,
Elizabeth Taylor, Kylie Minogue, Catherine Deneuve, Liza Minnelli,
Kim Cattrall, Heidi Klum, Dennis Rodman, Naomi Campbell, Cyndi
Lauper, Dolly Buster and Hilary Swank have inspired courage and
promoted the joyful aspects of life, giving a clear sign against discrimination and ignorance.
The traditional Vienna Opera Ball is the highlight of
the Viennese ball season, taking place in the building
of the Vienna State Opera, which, almost overnight, is
being transformed into a glittering, extravagant ball
room. The Vienna Opera Ball sticks to the strict traditional dress code of white tie and tails for men and
floor-length ballgowns for women. Among the guests
are national and international politicians, businessmen, artists and stars like Sophia Loren, Geri Halliwell,
Paris Hilton, Pamela Anderson, Carmen Electra, Nicolette Sheridan, Roger Moore, Brigitte Nielsen and Kim
Kardashian. The opening ceremony begins with the
famous polonaise danced by young men and women
all dressed in black and white. Arias by opera singers
and dances by the Vienna State Opera and children’s
ballets complete the picture.
Experience this sparkling event with breathtaking dance performances, famous music acts such as Simply Red, Grace Jones, Katy
Perry or the Queen of Austria, Conchita among others and the
glittering spectacle of the famous fashion show in the finale. Both
top models and dazzling celebrities can be seen on the catwalk
presenting creations from famous designers all over the world.
So far Donatella Versace, Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood
or Agent Provocateur to name just a few, have contributed their
imagination to this statement of humanity, tolerance and understanding.

Selva Morale e Spirituale – Vienna Bach Consort at St. Stephen’s Cathedral
Selva Morale e Spirituale – Festkonzert im Stephansdom
Salute to Vienna
Salute to Vienna
Claudio Monteverdi’s sacral concert “Selva Morale e
Spirituale”, written in 1641, merges the rythms of folk
music with psalms from the Old Testament. The overwhelming acoustics of Vienna’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the usage of historic instruments such as the
theorbe or the zink create an authentic and unique
sound experience. Led and conducted by maestro
Rubén Dubrovsky, the Vienna Bach Consort, one of
the most important Baroque ensembles in Austria,
will not fail to impress. The orchestra focuses on the
intensive dialog with baroque music and accounts for
the rediscovery of many important Baroque works,
such as those by Johann Josef Fux or Francesco
Bartolomeo Conti. The powerful vocal support by
the very talented soloists Soetkin Elbers and Theresa Dlouhy (soprano), Jakob Huppmann and Markus Forster (counter-tenor), Jan Petryka and Markus
Miesenberger (tenor) as well as Gerd Kenda and Joel
Frederiksen (basso) makes this concert a remarkable
pleasure.
Since 1995, “Salute to Vienna” welcomes the spring
with the enchanting music of Johann Strauss and
other fantastic musicians. In 2013, the great operetta-gala took place in the famous Wiener Konzerthaus in Vienna for the second time. “Salute to Vienna 2013” is presented by US-starmezzosoprano
Frederica von Stade and Academy Award Winner
Maximilian Schell. The Vienna Symphonic Orchestra,
conducted by the renowned Strauss-specialist maestro Peter Guth and the young Venezuelan conductor
Manuel López-Gómez, electrifi es with an enchanting medley of Viennese operetta: arias of “The Bat”,
“The Merry Widow”, “The Land of Smiles” and “The
Riviera Girl”, as well as a fi rework of Strauss-waltzes will not fail to entertain the audiences. The British
star-tenor Russell Watson appears as a special guest.
Celebrated Austrian soprano Daniela Fally and multi-award-winning Russian tenor Dmitry Korchak will
not fail to impress. The adorable sopranos Iva Mihanovic and Alexandra Reinprecht and Austrian baritone
Daniel Serafi n round up the fulminant setting. Enchanting musical and visual impressions are guaranteed by Austrian Vienna Boy’s Choir and the State
Opera Ballet of Vienna.

For many years “Christmas in Vienna” has
been a fixed star in the round of Viennese
Advent concerts, and this year again combines a balance of the well-known and the
less well-known, classical and popular, expansive music with intimate settings and
religious and secular music. The highly coveted soloists are Natalia Ushakova, Vesselina Kasarova, Juan Diego Flórez and Artur Rucinski and together form this year’s
highlights. The program arrangement runs
the gamut from “Festive Christmas” to “International Christmas” to “Popular Christmas”. This atmospheric concert is broadcast from Vienna‘s Konzerthaus.
The orchestra travels with the “Flying
Dutchman” (Overture Richard Wagner) in a “Dialogue Between Wind and

Orlando
Orlando
The Fairy Queen
The Fairy Queen
The hero, Orlando, loses his mind thanks
to his unrequited love for Angelica, the
Queen of Cathay. Angelica is in love with
Medoro, who has left the shepherdess,
Dorinda, because of her. However, the
master of events is a friend of Orlando,
the magician, Zoroastro. Freed from his
love delusion with his help, disappointed,
Orlando turns away from love and back to
combat and glory.
By dropping the spoken scenes of the
whole semi-opera and highlighting the
ear-candy songs, fabulous dance scenes,
clever effects and on stage-silliness of Purcell’s work Harnoncourt father and son let
the audience sit back and enjoy the memorable “masques” en suite. Taken on its own,
the colourful series of scenes turns out to
be a Baroque version of the “Everyman”
play, where in a magical night a young couple encounters the heralds of nature. They
remind the young persons of who they are,
where they come from and where they are
headed. And as you can see: The imagination knows no bounds in the realm of the
Fairy Queen.
“Orlando” represents the end of an era,
but at the same time constitutes an interesting new beginning in Handel’s oeuvre,
since the composer moved away dramatically and musically from established artistic traditions, by for example, reducing the
da capo arias or breaking up their strict
form.

La Straniera
La Straniera
Lucia di Lammermoor – The Greatest Opera Stars of Today: Live from Munich!
Lucia di Lammermoor – Die größten Opernstars von heute: Live aus München!
It was on February 18th, 1968 when she
made her debut as Rosina at the National Theater in Bratislava. Exactly 45 years
later we are more than happy to present
the great Edita Gruberova singing Bellini’s
rarely performed “La Straniera” at Vienna
Musikverein! The performance with the
same cast earned standing ovations at
Philharmonie im Gasteig in 2012. La straniera (The Stranger Woman) is an opera in
two acts by Vincenzo Bellini, from a libretto by Felice Romani, based on L‘étrangère
(1825) by Charles-Victor Prévot, vicomte
d‘Arlincourt. It was composed in the autumn of 1828 and premiered in February
1829 at La Scala in Milan.
The cycle of concertante opera performances in the Philharmonie in Gasteig
reaches another peak with Gaetano Donizetti’s masterpiece Lucia di Lammermoor.
In what is probably his most famous opera, the composer masters the clashing of
high-grade pulsating passions confidently
and with musical refinement. Italian opera
had never been this venturous, never this
attractive! Interpreting the mad scene in
Lucia di Lammermoor has been a career
highlight for every great soprano. Now,
the exceptional singer Diana Damrau once
again takes on the challenge of connecting vocal peak performance with dramatic
vehemence. Her musical partner Joseph
Calleja will ensure that there is plenty of
vocal brilliance and an unforgettable bel
canto experience.

Nali Gruber – Not just Frankenstein

The Revelries of the Painter Alfons Walde

The Velázquez Project
Das Velázquez Projekt
Scarcely any other Czech musician lived his life filled on the one
hand by such exhilarating successes and on the other by such
mean-spirited attacks, animosity and hate as Oskar Nedbal
(1874 – 1930). His artistic and personal fate starts with a dramatic,
steep upward trajectory, yet after the turning point this was followed by a free fall ending in suicide. The moving documentary
“Oskar Nedbal – Ups And Downs” follows the real life and works
of the musician against the backdrop of historic events in Europe.
Heinz Karl Gruber – known as Nali – achieved his international
breakthrough with a single composition. In 1978, British conductor, Simon Rattle, conducted the première of his “pandemonium”,
Frankenstein!!, to huge acclaim, and opened up the doors of the
international music world to the Austrian composer. For a long
time, nobody was prepared to concede that this clown, who appeared with children’s instruments and tonal compositions, was
serious. Yet today not only is he one of the most successful living
composers, but also much in demand as a chansonnier and conductor. “Nali Gruber – Not Just Frankenstein” conveys an intense,
personal insight into the fascinating world of this musical master.
Alfons Walde (1891 – 1958) was a notable painter and architect.
Initially influenced by Secessionism, he created still lives, landscapes and scenes from rural life. He lived in Kitzbühel in Tyrol, a region which he made internationally famous as a tourist
area through his posters of winter landscapes and winter sports
motifs. Alfons Walde always dreamed of achieving recognition
on the international art market, but was unable to do so. Until
now, much less was known about his exciting private life. This is
the story of a man, who, despite his industriousness, wished to
enjoy his life to the full and ultimately came to grief as a result.
“Truth, not art” is what Diego Velázquez sought to create, and
he sugarcoated neither kings nor paupers in his works. The fascinating film, “The Velázquez Project” shows that he himself
was driven, a lateral thinker and maverick, who was considered
a “craftsman” and did not belong to the nobility at the Spanish
court, but who ultimately wished to be considered one of their
own. The painters Herbert Brandl and Chen Danquin and the
major exhibition, “Velázquez”, which was held at the Museum
of Art History in the Austrian capital Vienna, follow in the footsteps of the “painter’s painter” to the present day.

The Carsony Brothers
Die Carsony Brüder
This new series presents artists, their
homelands and the places of their childhoods. What became of their childhood
friends and what has changed in the place
where they were born? Films and photos
of the artists’ families are as much a part
of this series as the many memories with
friends and witnesses to their childhoods.
This film tells the delightful and very moving story of three exceptional brothers. Back in
the 1950s everyone knew the Carsony Brothers! Born into a poor Viennese family, they
discovered their talent for acrobatics and set out to conquer Las Vegas and the rest of
the world with their amazing feats. Their legendary acrobatic act – the one-armed handstand on a cane – was a marvel to watch, and they counted among the best equilibristic
artists of their time. Their story has never been told and was long forgotten – until now!
This film draws on the treasure trove of photographs and film footage from the Carsony’s
private archive which will be shown exclusively for the first time.

The Invisible Man
Der unsichtbare Mann
Umeå – 2014 Capital of Culture
Schlaflos in Umeå
When the Mask Falls
Wenn der Vorhang fällt
In Asmahan’s Presence
Asmahan – Rauschende Nächte in Wien
Christmas 1960. After five years’ imprisonment a man escapes
from the most secure prison in Belfast using a file and bed sheets.
After him: a 12,000-strong army of policemen and soldiers. But
he is not caught. The escapee is Irishman, Danny Donnelly. At 16
he joined Sinn Féin, the political wing of the IRA. At 17 he was
detained whilst handing out flyers and sentenced to ten years
imprisonment by reason of his membership of a terrorist organisation. 50 years after his escape, together with his daughter, Danny retraces his footsteps during his escape through present-day
Northern Ireland and meets his helpers and adversaries from back
then. A film on the conflict in Northern Ireland from a completely
new perspective about belief, guilt and forgiveness.
Umeå is the least well known European capital of culture of all
time, but it is certainly not the least interesting. After all, it has
astonishing phenomena such as eight seasons and feminist punk
rockers as well as being the home city of Stieg Larsson, creator of
the “Millennium” trilogy. The documentary, “Umeå – 2014 Capital
of Culture” discovered a few alternatives to the rest of Europe in
the “city of a thousand birch trees”. Life here is unpretentious and
uncomplicated, anti-hierarchical and anti-snobbish. People get involved in politics and take responsibility. Minorities such as the
original inhabitants, the Sami, have a fixed place in society.
A highly personal documentary film as a declaration of love to
Vienna’s night life. From the current understanding of social
acceptability, morality and entertainment, the viewer travels
back to the heyday of Variety and Cabaret and draws an arc
to the present day. “When the Mask Falls” tells of the glitz and
glamour that once shaped the stages of night-time Vienna, the
capital of Austria, and documents how over the decades new,
sadly all-too-vulgar trends became accepted. The documentary also tells the life story of Chris and Ernestine Kirdall. As the
“Kirdall Duo” they were key figures in the Austrian Variety world
and experienced the changes over time in this form of entertainment.
Asmahan – Syrian Druze princess, film diva, music icon and femme
fatale of the Arab world in the 1940s. When Vienna was heavily
bombed by the Allies during World War II, she sang „Euphoric
Nights in Vienna“ and created a myth of Vienna that has affected
desires and hopes of travellers and immigrants from the Middle
East until today. Just a few weeks after her performance she died
under mysterious circumstances. “In Asmahan’s Presence” traces the promises the promises of the song, visits important sights
of Asmahan’s life, interwoven with the experiences and visions of
her present-day follower Sherifa and meets two Arab men protagonists searching for identity between East and West, between
dreams and reality and seeking to adapt in the city of Arab dreams:
Vienna.

On the Rails of the Double Headed Eagle –
Galizia
Mythos Galizien - die Suche nach der ukrainis- A Journey Through the

Auf den Schienen des Doppeladlers
News from the Congress of Vienna
Und er bewegte sich doch – Neues vom Wiener Kongress
“On the Rails of the Double Headed Eagle” shows the development of the gigantic railroad network throughout the Danube
Monarchy with its many main and branch lines, which impressive
masterstrokes in engineering have been accomplished in order to
connect the steppes of Galicia with the coasts of the Adriatic Sea.
The film highlights the many effects of building railroads and their
enormous importance to military and warfare. It shows a journey
through a sunken empire along its thousands and thousands of
kilometers of railroad tracks which lead us to the cities and villages, forests and mountains, wide plains and rocky coasts under the
double headed eagle of Austria-Hungary.
This documentary sets out to explore Galicia, a tract of land that,
after a century of eventful history, is today once again faced with
immense stresses and strains. Nowadays people look back fondly
on the time when each ethnic group lived together in peace. In the
Ukraine the book is the embodiment of the national culture and
national conscience, and has a long tradition. In Ukrainian society,
writers play a major role as commentators and intermediaries. This
contradictory land that has such a rich culture is explored both literarily and sociologically through their works and thoughts.
FURTHER RECOMMENDATIONS
200 years ago, for the first time in history, every important world leader of the time came
together in Vienna at a joint assembly. Napoleon had recently been vanquished in the
Battle of Leipzig by a coalition of European armies and a Europe without Napoleon was
to be divided up again by the victors. Where can the landmarks - architecturally, socially
and on the map - from that period 200 years ago still be seen today? What connects this
historic jigsaw puzzle to the present day? Napoleon and Metternich, two masterminds,
their relationship to one another and the division of the new Europe are the focus of this
documentary film.

What Makes Our Children Sick?
Was macht unsere Kinder krank?
FURTHER RECOMMENDATIONS
When the beauty craze meets the cult of youth, temptation quickly becomes a must. Is
the media, with its flood of ever more perfect pictures of the body, responsible? Or is the
beauty craze the necessary consequence of an increasingly superficial consumer society? “The Beauty Craze” analyses a development that has got under the skin of modern
society and is calling our image of ourselves and others into question. An eye-opening
documentary on the fear of ageing and the fading of youth, about the psychological and
social roots of our longing for beauty, about today’s trade in flawlessness, the psychology
of beauty and success, about being, appearance – and about the beauty of ageing.

FURTHER RECOMMENDATIONS
It is a dangerous paradox. Never has there been so much prosperity and at the same
time so many chronically sick children as today. A study from the United States
shows that at present 43 per cent of children under the age of 18 suffer from at least
one of 20 chronic illnesses. If we include morbid obesity and developmental disorders, the figure rises to 54.1 per cent. This means that completely healthy children
are for the first time in a minority in an industrial country. This trend is spreading to
Europe too. Is ill health really becoming more common, or are there other explanations? The documentary portrays children with typically modern conditions and
looks for possible causes.

According to estimates, every year 2,4 million women, men and minors fall victim to human trafficking. In Europe more than 500,000 people are involved in this crime but there
is no sufficient proof - the network of human traffickers seems invisible. Many victims end
up in enforced prostitution. Two nuns provide asylum for forced prostitutes in Austria
with counselling centers and protective accommodations. They want to support women
on their way to a brighter future but thereby put themselves in great danger!
FURTHER RECOMMENDATIONS
People all around the world claim it, but what is justice really all about? Some well-known
facts: There is an increase in inequality, the income gap raises and the distribution of
wealth is developing dramatically. The story of three families illustrates the status quo
about the distribution of opportunities, performance justice, wealth, health and happiness in our society. This documentary shows how scientists, academics and theologians
try to define what justice really stands for and presents people that seem to make life a
bit juster.

Sharp as a Tack, Well-Educated, Assistant
Blitzgescheit, gut ausgebildet, weiblich
The Basic Income Generation
Generation Grundeinkommen
The Baye Fall are the most conspicuous adherents of the Senegalese Sufi order of the Mouride Brotherhood. With their hip-length
dreadlocks, black and white robes and countless prayer beads,
most of the time they are the focus of public interest. The order is
described as a Muslim brotherhood, yet as many women belong
to the order and play a role that is on a par with that of the men.
They are known as Yaye Fall. “Yaye Fall - Women’s Voices” is devoted to the outlook, attitude to life and activities of the Yaye Fall
in view of the general situation of women in this predominantly Islamic country. It seeks to shed light on the all too often neglected,
even disregarded significance of women in Islamic movements.
Why are there so few women at the very top of the artistic
and cultural world? Are women less good? Why then do they
tend to score above average in relevant studies? Are women
too modest, too considerate, too self-critical – or do they wimp
out when it comes to the crunch? “Sharp as a Tack, Well-Educated, Assistant” examines the situation of women working in
the creative and cultural spheres and analyses them together
with women working in the theatre, female film directors and
cultural workers, with their male colleagues and with a female
television director.
Time has changed. Nowadays there is no space for lone fighters. The young generation tries to fulfill a fundamental change
in social values. Financial benefits are no longer satisfying. Their
attitude and point of view is equal to the basic concerns of
the ‘Christian Social teaching’. They form coalitions with some
socio-politically active groups who follow the Christian social
doctrine. This documentary tries to portray as well as explain
the motives and ethics which determine the life of the “Basic
Income Generation”. It questions the economic and political
concepts of the current lifestyle of the 21st century and makes
a comparison between the behaviors of individuals in contrast
to their expectation of society.

The car, the library and a wardrobe full of clothes. Status symbols of yesterday. Today car sharing, swap markets and minimalism are booming as aspects of a lifestyle that rejects materialism. The cult of “less is more” is slowly spilling over from the
United States to Europe.
“100 things and no more” promises a new happiness without
the urge to spend. Critics see it as a lifestyle that is only open
to the middle classes - after all, those who have nothing, have
nothing to swap. Optimists believe in a change with the potential to cut capitalism down to size and see in it the harbinger
of a more social interconnectedness and a way of life that protects the environment. A trend against capitalism? Or saving
the world by conserving resources?

The number of people with disabilities is increasing. Due to the

disabled – and are still facing barriers. Independent living, access
to education and the professional world, existence-securing pensions, disability-friendly infrastructures are still not self-evident.
This film presents four countries in detail that set an example in
terms of accessible design. The USA was the first country where
disability legislation has been defined in law. Sweden and Spain
are well-known for their support for people with disabilities. In
Sweden they offer a personal assistant on their side to handle
the everyday life whereas in Spain the 40-years old Pablo Pineda
was the first European with down syndrome that graduated at an
university.
Since the EU and USA have been involved in secret negotiations
regarding a free trade agreement, criticism of the project has not
ceased. The citizens and their elected representatives in the EU
parliament feel deprived of their democratic rights. It is feared
that in order to come to a deal with the Americans, the EU Commission might sacrifice important regulations and consumer rights
in the name of free trade. But where do the differences actually lie
between Europe and the United States? Are US citizens really less
well protected against the interests of large corporations than Europeans? What is the situation regarding GM food and how about
data protection? “Business Without Limits” looks for answers to
these fascinating questions.

Europe – Work Until You Drop
Europa – Arbeiten bis zum Umfallen
Europe: Young, Educated, Unemployed
Europa: Jung, gebildet, arbeitslos
Feels Like Home?
Nicht unser Staat
Europeans are living ever longer, whilst pension funds are becoming increasingly empty. In future, a well-deserved retirement at
about 60 years old will no longer be possible. Right across the
EU, the retirement age is gradually increasing – in Germany to
67 years of age, in the United Kingdom even to 70. Many countries
are considering linking the retirement age to rising life expectancy – in which case even making the pensionable age 67 will no
longer be enough. Whilst some work into their old age of their
own free will, others work to supplement their meagre pensions.
“Europe - Work Until You Drop” takes a trip through a Europe undergoing demographic change and visits senior citizens who are
still working at an advanced age – between old age poverty and
a quest for meaning.
Youth unemployment – a subject that is causing despair throughout Europe. In southern Europe in particular, an entire generation
is facing dark times. Even in Finland, a winner in the PISA educational rankings, youth unemployment stands above average. The
EU has now recognised the urgency of the problem. By the end of
2015, six billion euros are to be spent on youth employment programmes – a negligible amount in comparison with that spent on
rescuing the banks. This fascinating report shows, however, that
there is also positive news for the young: promising projects in Italy, Finland and Portugal are seeking to bring to life the creativity
of young people.
All over Europe independence movements are dominating the headlines. Especially Scotland, South Tyrol and Catalonia are well-known for their ideas of a separation in contrast
to the mind of a united Europe. In September 2014 Scotland faces a future decisive vote
after which it either receives the status as an independent country or will still be part of
the United Kingdom. The same thoughts are shared in Catalonia, where over one million
people went on the streets of Barcelona to speak out their opinion. This documentary
follows three peaceful activists with the same goal: independence and a new identity.

The Wildlife Orphanage
Harnas – Ein Waisenhaus für wilde Tiere
FURTHER RECOMMENDATIONS
Normally animal shelters are the last refuge for unfortunate creatures. But in Namibia,
Southern Africa, there is a different kind of shelter: a ten thousand hectare orphanage –
a haven for wild animals. The residents are rather exotic – lions, baboons, cheetahs and
antelope either orphaned, injured or homeless. The two-legged stars of the series are the
volunteers. There are dozens of helpers from students to retirees from all over the world
who come to the orphanage to work as nurses, tenders or keepers. The volunteers’ tasks
are rather unusual: they have to drive off-road and straight into the bush to feed lions
and cheetahs, take daily walks with a hoard of crazy baboons, try to capture runaway
meerkats and to learn how to bottle-feed leopard cubs and 440 pound rhino babies.
Lionsrock – Return of the
King
Lionsrock – Die Heimkehr
des Königs
In 2008 a unique wildlife reserve was
established around Lionsrock, South Africa, with the aim of returning lions and
other big cats held captive in Europe
to the land of their ancestors. Today
Lionsrock is home for more than 100
large predators – lions, tigers, leopards,
hyenas and wild dogs. This documentary touches on a special relationship

Like A Phoenix From The Ashes – A South African Cattle Farm Becomes an Animal Paradise
Wie Phönix aus der Asche – Eine südafrikanische Rinderfarm wird Tierparadies
The Last Nomads
Die letzten Nomaden
One of the loveliest game sanctuaries in
today’s South Africa, Madikwe was once
sparsely populated farmland for cattle breeding and maize cultivation and
scarcely able to feed its few inhabitants.
Yet what was once practically worthless
land has now, with the robust participation of the surrounding communities and
investors, become an exemplary model of
nature conservation and future landscape
use. Like in the biblical story of Noah’s ark,
almost all of the wild animal species found
in southern Africa that would have had almost no chance of survival elsewhere, including the Big 5 and rare and endangered
animals, were resettled here. But has Operation “Phoenix” really contributed to the
desired upturn in the local economy or is it
just the private investors who are profiting
again from an eco-project?
“The Last Nomads” features the greatest
traditional journeys left on Earth as seen
through the eyes of the people who still
travel on them. From the Zagros Mountains of Iran to the frozen wastelands of
northern Siberia, the Sahara to the Himalaya, these beautifully filmed documentaries give a unique insight into the very last
human journeys still being travelled as they
have been for thousands of years.
Join the travellers over four episodes on
their long and hard way when they try
to reach several destinations all over the
world. This series captures these great
human odysseys as they rapidly fade into
extinction.

Wild Venice
Wildes Venedig
EW

Who would have thought Venice has its
own beautiful reefs? The Tengue, located on the east end of the Lagoon, contains an astonishing diversity of life, from
sponges to sea anemones to scribbled
pipefish. Like all the other amazing wildlife, the Tengue has been influenced,
perhaps created, by centuries of human
geo-engineering.
The Grand Canal itself is actually the
mouth of the river Brenta, descending
200kms from the Alps! Venice today is
the habitat for a wide range of animals.
The Lagoon is a hot-spot for exotic birds
heading north in spring – year after year
more than 60 species stop at the Lagoon,
their first feeding ground after crossing
the Mediterranean. Venice’s fabulous hidden gardens are also hiding-places for a
surprising range of animals: bats, mockingbirds, Eurasian golden plovers and
even Balkan whip snakes!
In magnificent, atmospheric 4K photography, this film reveals the unexpected natural glories of the world’s most beautiful
man-made environment.

Isolated and remote, around 300 horses
live on the edge of the world. It is a hot
desert which they have to cross in the
search for water and patches of grass. In
Namibia’s abandoned ghost towns they
find protection from the scorching heat
- scenes like in old Wild West films, with
abandoned huts filled with desert sand.
These animals, who do not belong there
at all, have developed extreme survival
strategies: they lick one another to provide themselves with salt, and in acute
cases they even recycle their own dung
and feed on it to extract the last nutrients. The film follows a young stallion
as it joins a group of adolescent horses.
Does he have the strength to one day
become a leader in the bleak world of
the fascinating Namib Desert?

Lionsrock – Return of the King
Lionsrock – Die Heimkehr des Königs
Irish Cameraman Colin Stafford-Johnson
spent almost 600 days filming Broken Tail
& his family for some of the finest tiger
documentaries ever made. Broken Tail
was the most charismatic tiger cub he’d
ever seen in Ranthambhore, one of India’s
premier wild tiger reserves. Impossibly
cute, he gamboled and posed for Colin’s
camera through the first years of his life.
But then, without warning, Broken Tail
disappeared. He abandoned his sanctuary
and went on the run, disappearing into
the wilds of rural India for almost a year.
On a spectacular odyssey across Rajasthan, Colin travels by horseback retracing
Broken Tail’s last journey, gathering clues
as to his route and behaviour, exploring
why he abandoned his home, and above
all: revealing important truths about India’s last wild tigers.
In February 2008 a unique wildlife reserve of 1,250 hectares was established around
Lionsrock, South Africa, with the aim of returning lions and other big cats to the land
of their ancestors. Most are from Europe, from rundown zoos or circuses, removed to
dubious holding pens like the dilapidated Pantera big cats’ asylum in the Netherlands.
Today Lionsrock is home for more than 100 large predators, mainly lions, but also tigers, leopards, cheetah, caracal, hyenas and wild dogs. This documentary touches on a
very special relationship between animals and humans: these transplanted animals will
live out their lives in a happier and more natural environment than they knew in Europe.

Planet Sparrow
Planet der Spatzen
Secrets of Bumblebees
Hummeln – Bienen im Pelz
Ben is a sparrow in the Souk in Cairo. Bushy
and tousled, he flits between crowded
stalls to build his nest and at-tract a mate.
He’s one of five heroes of “Planet Sparrow”.
Their adventures cover the world, travelling
westward with the sun from Cairo to Vienna, Paris, New York, Beijing and Moscow.
Small and grey-brown, sparrows may seem
dull, but this first impression is deceptive.
They sing as prettily as canaries and can imitate other birds – even machines! They’re
extremely clever and their insect-hunting
skills are breathtaking. The camera pursues
these artists of flight through narrow alleys,
revealing their spectacular aerial manoeuvres. In Paris, centuries of living with humans have taught them to form teams that
steal and share the food of restaurant diners. In New York, orphaned sparrow chicks
are adopted by new sparrow parents. The
birds play Russian roulette in Moscow, flying beneath the cars on the busiest roads
to save winter energy. “Planet Sparrow” is
a documentary about these flying survival
artists, their neighbors and adversaries, all
photographed from the perspective of the
birds, as well.
They are chubbier, fuzzier and more leisurely than their sisters, the bees. They
are a lot less aggressive and awe-inspiring than their cousins the wasps. Compared to honey bees, these social insects have long been poorly researched,
though they’re at home in temperate
regions throughout the Northern Hemisphere and South America. A few tropical species form colonies lasting several
years, but elsewhere only the summer’s
new Queens survive into next spring.
Macro and high-speed cinematography
allow us to witness their behavior, understand their biology, experience their
unique abilities and leave us in awe of
these droll little harbingers of spring.

The Empress and the Forest
Der wilde Wald der Kaiserin
When a female barn–owl’s home – an old disused barn – is demolished, she has to seek a new place to live. On the way, flying
through forests and across grasslands, she encounters most of
the common owl species in Central Europe: long– and short–
eared owls, little, tawny and eagle owls, some she can live peacefully beside, others she must shun or risk becoming their prey.
During her journey, the film shows how owls fly so silently and
hunt so efficiently it illustrates what they have meant to humans
since ancient times, and how they live beside us today. It explains
why they have become – unfairly – associated with death. Our
owl finally finds a new home, as the guest of a barn owl family,
in time to see the new clutch of young following their mother on
their first majestic flight.
Across Europe hoopoes are struggling. But amidst the orchards
and vineyards of the Wagram region near Vienna they are thriving. This documentary shows how the small bird with the spectacular crown feathers made a comeback in the heart of Europe and
how it is dealing with its neighbours: Aesculapian snakes, foxes
and falcons. But it is also the story about one man’s dream that
came true: Manfred Eckenfellner is known as the “Hoopoe-Whisperer” and due to his passion the birds found their way back to
the Wagram region. Even cultural landscapes like the Wagram
Wineyards offer countless opportunities for wild animals to find
new niches. Kestrels use castle towers to breed and bee-eaters
live in the same layers of loess vintners grow their grapes on.
The sea eagle was once widespread
throughout almost all of Europe and
graced the coats of arms of many different countries. During the 19th and
20 th centuries it was driven to the brink
of extinction by hunting, the increased
use of pesticides and the destruction of
its habitat. This touching animal drama
recounts the true life story of one individual bird, observed over the course
of a year. Beginning with its birth in a
lowland forest in Central Europe the film
team follows the eagle’s first outing with
its brothers and sisters and subsequent
distant migrations to places as far away
as Scandinavia. Finally it chronicles its
dramatic lead poisoning, recovery and resettlement in a nature reserve.
The young cheetah marks carefully his
new terrain which is full of another animal’s strange smell. A couple of young
falcons is nervous: its first attempt at
flight. Also Nina is excited: she is the
young keeper of the bats – and this is the
moment to set the young animals free to
find a living in the woods around Schönbrunn castle. What these animals share is
their proximity to humans in a zoo – the
world’s oldest, Vienna’s Schönbrunn zoo:
A centre for animal care, conservation
and international breeding programs.
This is the story about Schönbrunn’s zookeepers who devote their lives to the animals by witnessing birth, aging process,
death and, occasionally, the end of an entire species.
A palace in a private woodland near the
city of Vienna; 25 square miles of lonely beauty designed for a tragic empress.
The Lainzer Park was a gift from the
Emperor to his wife Elisabeth, Empress
of Austria, more than a century ago. In
the midst of the forest is a garden whose
four-hundred-year old oaks have trunks
with diameters greater than four metres. The crowns of the trees are host to
more than 1,000 insect species, including
a hundred different kinds of butterflies.
This hidden ecosystem reveals a macro
world of astonishing variety, beauty and
colour in the trees and on the ground,
and follows the free-roaming deer and
wild hogs that live so close to the busy
centre of Austria’s capital city.

Cautiously emerges the massive moose
from the protective shades of the huge
trees and approaches the moor. A
brown bear jogs across an Alpine meadow and a little colorful lizard flits over
the sandy ground – all these animals
are guests in Austria, but at Austria’s
borderlands they can be seen at times.
Some of them dare even to intrude
deeper into virgin territory. This wildlife
documentary takes us onto a journey of
nearly 3.000 kilometers along the wild
frontiers of the Austrian territory. It is
a journey through untamed and hidden
landscapes, but also through crowded
places and arterial roads. Some of the
frontiers have never seriously divided
countries, people and animals, but others were unscalable barriers for everyone – like the Iron Curtain which divided
worlds only 25 years ago.
This is one of Austria’s most fascinating
landscapes: deep dark forests surrounded
by steep mountain ridges, gentle meadows
in front of exposed summits – a region,
characterized by only one color: green.
This is the Styrian alpine upland which
once was homeland to one of Austria’s
most popular writers, Peter Rosegger. He
described the demanding life of the peasant people at the time when industrialization was about to revolutionize the rural
life. This is truly the best place to follow
a caring doe throughout a year in which
she brings up her fawn, prepares the kid
for surviving the bitter cold winter and finally leaves it into adulthood. When winter
arrives, right before Christmas, the hardest
but most quiet time in the year begins for
the doe and its fawn – as it did for hundreds of years for the peasants, as well. But
in these weeks one finds a special gloss
and mood in this wonderful landscape
which has softly turned all in white …

Nock – Mountains at Heaven’s Door
Nockberge – Land zwischen Himmel und Erde
It sounds like yesterday: ”Unless we take action, industry and
tourism will wipe out the last traces of nature in our country”
– But it was a hundred years ago, when a group of Swiss champions of Nature created Engadin National Park, the Alps’ very
first wildlife reserve. Human interference was terminated – and
that meant no more rescue campaigns either, like the secret
smuggling of Ibexes over the pass from Italy just a few years
before. Nature was to reign unimpeded – humans would watch
from the sidelines, and only time would tell whether the bold
experiment had come too late. Nature up here should be as
free as the glacier waters had always been – a drop can decide
where it wants to go: east to the Inn, Danube and Black Sea,
north to the Rhine and the North Sea, or south to the Adriatic
and the Mediterranean. A hundred years have passed – and man
has watched in wonder as a new balance has established itself
in this Alpine wonderland: the Ibex thrive, the bearded vulture
is back in force, and even large predators – lynx, wolves and
bears – are starting to claim back their old hunting grounds.
This documentary follows in their tracks to celebrate a spectacular pioneering story of nature preservation.
You might think you were in Ireland, you might sense the vastness of Castile in Spain, but you’d never believe this was the
heart of the Austrian Alps: The Nock Mountains are – geologically – Austria’s oldest landscape. For a hundred million years,
the land around them has risen and fallen, while the mountains
themselves hardly moved. And for the past thousand years, the
same has been true of the harmonious co-existence of wild nature and rural culture. Wreathed in gentle clouds circling the
smooth green mountain tops, there is a serenity to this region
that makes it easy to believe you’re not far from heaven’s door.

The Nock mountains have been made a biosphere reserve;
that and traditional farming have kept out the mass tourism
that blighted other Alpine regions. The wide open spaces and
wealth of small natural wonders that characterize these gentle,
green mountains have been successfully preserved: wild rivers,
endless woodland, lush mountain meadows, wildflowers, and
wild animals, from the largest: red deer and golden eagles, to
foxes, marmots and capercaillies, and the tiny frogs, newts and
dragonflies that populate the secret world of mountain lakes.
This is perfect territory for creatures shrouded in myth and
mystery: the swift, elusive stone marten, the dark and intelligent raven and the inquisitive and aggressive European adder,
that gives birth to live young. And watch what happens when a
great spotted woodpecker chick falls from it’s nest...

Mountains
Schladminger Bergwelten
Part I: Land of the Chamois
Part II: Land of the Champions
Schladming in Austria is not the best
known ski region but it’s one of the finest
- because it keeps a low profile and makes
sure the season doesn’t dominate the
landscape. That means its nature is better
protected than in normal mixed regions.
“Schladming – Magic Mountains” captures
the stunning variety of a region caught between two mountain ranges made of very
different rock - one porous limestone, the
other rock-hard granite. Red deer roam the
hillsides in summer; lone wolves tread the
winter snows. But the kings of this world
are the chamois, perfectly adapted to their
hazardous habitat. Fighting, playing, running or resting they treat their sheer surroundings with sovereign indifference.

The INNside Story
Inn – Der grüne Fluss aus den Alpen
Secrets of the Flooded Forest –
Danube National Park
Wildnis am Strom – Nationalpark Donauauen
Snow masses pile up in abundance on
the deep snow-covered slopes. The wind
has created bizarre snowdrifts on the
steep mountain ridges. The Arlberg is
the embodiment of an idyllic winter and
the cradle of alpine skiing. However, this
famous ski resort, offers a lot more than
expected. A bit of untouched nature has
been preserved in the hardly accessible
cliffy massifs. The winter is the toughest
time for ibexes and chamois. The meager
fodder is buried deep under the snow and
the animals can only find nutrition there
where avalanches have cleared the slopes
from snow. The winterly splendor is only
one facet – the famous face of Arlberg, remains hidden under the snow almost half
a year long.
A cascade of water pouring from glaciers and a lake in the high
mountains, a water fall tumbling from high up into the valley, a
chain of lakes at the base of 10,000-foot peaks, drawn-out gravel
banks and mud flats and extensive riparian forests at the river’s
lower reaches: the Inn has many faces to show and an interesting
tale to tell. It is the longest tributary of the Danube in Central
Europe, flowing through Switzerland, Austria and Bavaria along
its 520 kilometer course. The variety in landscape is reflected in
the diversity of the flora and fauna along the river: grayling and
trout swarm in its headwaters, dragonflies, frogs and rare water
plants populate the oxbows, owls and bats raise their young in
the bluffs. It is the river’s indestructible power, however, which is
most impressive: in spite of many hydropower plants and dams
lining its path, the river still carries more than a million tons of
suspended solids a month downstream before it empties its load
into the Danube.
After beginning in Vienna, the Danube riverbank forests extend to
the gates of Bratislava, linking the two capitals like a green ribbon,
forming a unique wildlife habitat in the heart of Europe. A few
years ago a 36 kilometer section was turned into a national park
that now protects the last undeveloped stretch of the Danube River and also the last riparian zone of its size in Central Europe. In
the forests along the Danube the water’s power is able to influence plant and animal habitats again. Everything here is in motion
and subject to constant change. Growth and destruction, birth
and death are integral to this landscape. The variety of habitats
and species created as a result is outstanding: White-tailed eagles breed in the woods, mud minnows and pond turtles populate
the old arms of the river, beavers build their dams on the banks.
The Danube National Park: a hidden wilderness full of beauty and
drama, and a refuge for an astounding variety of flora and fauna.

This is the story of a landscape born on
ice and rock; the story of a valley smashed
and broken, crushed and teased, lowered
– and raised again – by nature’s elements;
the story of a region, beautiful and picturesque, hailed as one of creation’s summits.
This haunt and habitat belongs to both man
and animal. Here we enter a dense world
of extremes and contrasts: the extremes
come from the climatic conditions while the
contrasts are based on man-made realities,
powerful and colorful traditions coupled
with intellectual and economic modernity.

On a River in Ireland
Shannon – Geheimnisvoller Fluss im Herzen Irlands
It’s one of the least known rivers on earth - yet it flows for nearly 2.800 kilometers and belongs to six countries. The Zambezi is
the fourth-longest river in Africa, and along its course it sweeps
through a series of natural spectacles – from the blooming of
a thousand musasa trees to the rains that will flood its banks,
anointing the land with rich silt. But none compete with the river’s
crescendo – the Victoria Falls – one of the seven natural wonders
of the world. Zambezi is a haven and a source of life to a vast array
of wild animals and humans alike. Filmed throughout the changing seasons we follow the Zambezi from its headwaters to the
thundering power of the Victoria Falls until it gently flows into the
Indian Ocean. Part 1 of the documentary focuses on the natural
history of the 2800km long river. Part 2 will tell the fascinating human history of the Zambezi, from the first Portuguese expedition
in 1571 to the modern-day construction of the Kariba dam. The
story of the Zambezi is one of constant change, of life and death
– it is the story of Africa itself.
The Shannon is Ireland’s greatest geographical landmark and the longest river in
these islands. For 340 kms the river carves
its way south through the heart of the
country almost splitting Ireland in two. It is
both a barrier and highway – a silver ribbon
holding back the rugged landscapes of the
west from the gentler plains to the east. On
its journey, the Shannon passes through a
huge palette of rural landscapes; where on
little known backwaters, Ireland’s wild animals and plants still thrive as almost nowhere else. “On a River in Ireland” brings
this remarkable portrait of Ireland’s greatest geographical feature to viewers, using
a host of techniques and showing never
before filmed Irish sequences and stories.

Romantic river banks and unspoilt nature – these landscapes
flank the Danube River. This comprehensive cinematic portrait
of Europe’s secondlongest river presents scenes of breathtaking beauty along the banks of the Danube and investigates
the tension between humans and nature, civilisation and wilderness. Dams and power stations alternate with sections of
natural wilderness along this mighty river, which flows through
metropolises such as Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest and untouched natural landscapes like the Danube National Park and
the Kopaki Rit. Further south, between the Carpathian mountain range in Romania and the Serbian Ore mountains, the river
passes through the socalled Iron Gate, 137 kilometres of Gorges
that are among the largest in Europe. The mighty river ends in a
unique labyrinth of water, mud and reeds – the Danube delta. It
is the last remaining major river delta in Europe and the largest
reed bed on earth, used by huge colonies of pelicans, cormorants, sea eagles and spoonbills for breeding and nesting.

Wild Nairobi
Wildes Nairobi
Ships of the Desert
Wüstenschiffe
With a population of around 3 million, Nairobi is one of the largest cities in Africa. However the metropolis is surrounded by
wilderness which extends into the city itself. Just a few metres
from the airport lies the Nairobi national park, with its vast savannah and mysterious inhabitants. Beside the motorway, lions,
hyenas, giraffes and rhinoceros wander through grassland, separated only by a wire fence, while in the city centre hundreds
of marabous breed in the tree lined streets. Hordes of apes
terrorise people walking in the city’s parks and crocodiles and
hippos swim in the reservoirs of the city’s sewerage treatment
plant. This is a journey of discovery through a city full of contradictions and teeming with nature, technology and wildness, in
which humans and animals live together as neighbours.
Camels are masters of the art of survival. They can go for up to ten
months without a drop of water, then drink 200 litres in only 15 minutes and even digest seawater. Domesticated as beasts of burden
they laid the foundations of ancient long-distance trade. Legendary salt and incense caravans regularly crossed the most hostile
landscapes in the world. Today, camels are still the most important
source of milk, meat, leather, wool, fertilizer and fuel in large parts
of Africa and Asia, and for the Bedouins of Arabia. Because of this,
Bedouins call the camel Al-Ata Allah, the gift of God. Now medical
researchers are exploring the miraculous properties of camels’ milk
– apparently effective against Alzheimer’s, cancer and even Aids!
The film shows animals in the wild, defying the deadly conditions
of the desert, and males battling brutally for control of the harem
group; while the specially bred racing camels are worth up to $3m
each. “Ships of the Desert” follows the ancient routes of the camel-caravans across Arabia, Africa and Asia, telling fascinating camel-stories along the way, from ancient times to the present.

fate of the wolves and other animals in
the contaminated wilderness.
What is the difference between the domestic dog and the wolf if both of them have
been raised under the same conditions?
What skills got lost and which were gained
in the process of domestication? How far
are wolves prepared to cooperate with
humans? Do they accept domestic dogs
as cooperation partners? To get answers
to these questions, researchers Friederike
Range, Zsofia Viranyi and Professor Kurt
Kotrschal have taken up the task – for the
first time ever in canid research – to raise a
pack of wolves by hand. The film follows the
four pups for a full year and records their
upbringing, their progress in the daily work,
their social development and their behavior
in the various testing centers.
With large tufted ears, a short tail and
a trusting look, one could almost believe that lynxes are just big cats. In their
hearts, however, they are wild and untamed. They are the tigers of Europe. This
is the story of a hard earned friendship.
On the one side is Milos Majda, a quiet,
nature loving ranger at the Mala Fatra national park in Slovakia. On the other side
are two small lynxes, fresh from the zoo.
With Milos’ help, it’s hoped the lynxes will
return to the home of their ancestors in
the forests of Mala Fatra in the heart of
Slovakia. For two years Milos Majda and
the biologist and animal filmmaker Tomas Hulik follow the journey of the lynx
siblings from their warm nursery inside a
cabin into the wilderness.
No animal reflects human social changes
as much as the dog. For millennia, dogs
have served as mankind’s hunting buddies, vital companions in our struggle for
survival. In today’s increasingly civilized
world, modern dogs have had to abandon
their first instincts, finding new employment as family members, helping the disabled, diagnosing cancer, or sniffing for
drugs. We have forgotten what it actually
means to be a dog, a hunter.

“Hunting Buddies” looks back at this part
of our cultural history and discovers where
dog skills come from, finding out what
we have given up and gained as our relationship with dogs has changed. Different
hunting dogs are followed in real-life situations seen from dog and human perspective. Each breed emerged from a specific
period in hunting history, when each was
supremely adapted to the tasks and skills
required. “Hunting Buddies” takes a closer
look at dog and man, nature and culture –
a cinematic cross-over appealing not just
to hunters and dog-lovers but to anyone
fascinated by the history and development
of humankind.

Termites – The Inner Sanctum
Die geheime Welt der Termiten
Mystery of the Fairy Circles
Das Geheimnis der Feenkreise
Sea of Creepy Monsters
Der See der kleinen Monster
Little Monsters – Hide & Cheat
Kleine Monster – Täuschen & Tarnen
They cannot tolerate sunlight; some of them are even blind. However they are one of the world’s most ingenious builders: Termites.
They build highrisers without any technical devices that are, compared to the Empire State Building in New York, 25 times higher.
They are the only animals that have managed to build an air-conditioning system without electricity. Their nests are architectural
masterpieces that rise up to eight meters from the ground and
dispose brood chambers for larvae, corridors for transportation,
fungal gardens for nutrition and even emergency exits for hostile
attacks. “Termites – The Inner Sanctum” takes us along a journey
into another world. Visit the skillfully built termite mounds and experience dramatic and exciting stories in the life of a termite-colony via state-of-the art macro film technology. Filmed in the US,
Kenya and Borneo.
When it rains in the Namib, a thick carpet of grass covers the
sand and stony desert. But this green layer is punctuated by bare
circular patches, as regular as if drawn by a compass. And there
are not just one or two of them, but hundreds of thousands. Observed from the air, they could be innumerable golf bunkers – or
an abstract painting: “Red dots on green background”. They appear between 60 to 120 kilometres from the coast and stretch
from South Africa to Angola. They are bordered by a ring of tall,
thick grass, which stands out from the surrounding sparse vegetation. But where did these mysterious “fairy circles” come from?
Are they caused by mineral compounds in the ground? Did poisonous plants or poison gas contaminate the subsoil? Are they
the work of insects? Or is it the impact of meteorites that is responsible? And what crucial role do they play in the ecosystem?
Three scientific teams have conflicting theories, but finally the
amazing secret of the fairy circles is revealed!
The Lembeh strait in the northern part of the Indonesian island
of Sulawesi is a unique hotspot of marine biodiversity. Countless amazing creatures thrive in the underwater landscape surrounding Lembeh Island. During four years a wildlife filmmaker
couple spent many months in the region capturing hundreds of
hours of behavior, lots of it never filmed before. Among other
unique behavior the filmmakers were able to shoot an Anglerfish swallowing a Lionfish, a scene resembling Godzilla gulping down Dracula. Elegant seahorses, thumb-splitting Mantis
shrimp, and deadly minioctopuses are just some of the remarkable creatures traditional underwater films tend to overlook. As
most of the underwater drama is hidden from plain sight only
the ground-breaking macro photography in this film can reveal
the awe and beauty of life in the reef of little monsters.
This 3D documentary presents some of the animal kingdom’s
strangest survival strategies. The most startling behavior patterns aren’t found among the classic big animals such as lions
or polar bears, but among nature’s smaller creatures: Poison
dart frogs, chameleons, praying mantises and scorpions, to
name only a few. These “Little Monsters” are masters of survival. Until recently, only a handful of scientists enjoyed the
technical means to study them up close. But now, with its ingenious combination of slow-motion-3D and timelapse-3D,
“Little Monsters” even improves upon state of the art 3D for
greater impact, yielding unbelievable scenes the world has never seen and “felt” before.

Black Mamba – Kiss of Death
Schwarze Mamba – Der Kuss des Todes
Incredible Frogs
Die faszinierende Welt der Frösche
Triumph of the Tomato
Triumph der Tomate
It’s spring and the start of the “Silly Season” on the North Coast
of Kwazulu Natal – when deadly Black Mambas emerge from
their winter slumber and strike fear into the hearts of all who
cross their path. This warm, leafy coastal habitat is a perfect
Mamba country, and a huge concentration of these silent killers
make their home in an area known as “Mamba Valley”. Mambas like warm, dark spaces – and there are many of those in
human homes. Considering a Mamba’s bite has a 100 percent
fatality rate, left untreated, it’s not surprising humans fear and
vilify these snakes – and there’s a shoot–to–kill bounty on their
heads. From predation to male confrontations, from mating to
incubation: surveillance from the lockup records some of the
most intriguing and intimate moments of the secret life of the
Mamba. Along the way, cinematic dramatizations of actual confrontations between people and Mambas highlight the unpredictable and often fatal consequences of dabbling with Africa’s
most venomous snake.
For tens of millions of years amphibians dominated life on Earth
– some of them at the size of crocodiles, then in the role of apex
predators. Today the freakish predatory properties of what we
call frogs are alive and well. In this film we examine some of
the most bizarre frog species across the globe and reveal some
starting new behavior unique to this much maligned species.
Frogs can survive with their weird and wonderful abilities in all
extremes. Their incredible and bizarre adaptations range from
bone claws and class skin to antifreeze blood. Now, from the
jungles of South America to the swamps of Africa, we examine some of the strangest creatures on Planet Earth: There are
frogs with the abilities to hide and flight from their enemies, like
the Darwin’s frog; there are others who are killers themselves,
like the poison dart frog, the most toxic creature on earth; some
frogs eat their outsized prey alive while others are as big as a
human child.
The original Peruvian tomat’l – “swollen fruit”–
was yellow and the Conquistadores prized it for
its blossom. But in Europe under the Spanish sun
its lycopene went wild; rounded and red, it became irresistible. In Austria they still call it the
“paradise fruit”, and in Italy the “golden apple”.
This was surely the real forbidden fruit in the
world’s first seduction! Today’s obsession with
shape, size and long shelf–life has reduced the
once glorious tomato to mushy tastelessness. But
the counter–revolution has started!

Humans prefer moderation – neither too
hot nor too cold, neither too light nor too
dark. But Earth doesn’t cater to our preferences. Our planet offers an abundance
of extreme conditions, and people everywhere have had to learn to adapt to their
surroundings. “EXTREME! – Light and
Dark” is a journey to the brightest and
darkest inhabited areas of the world: places where a cloud hardly ever crosses the
sky or months pass without a single ray of
sun–light reaching the ground. How does
so much light, or so little, affect the mindset and emotional well–being of the people who live with it? How do they protect
themselves? And how do they take advantage of their situation?
We recognise our world primarily through
the sense of vision yet the light we use to
see is only a tiny fraction of the electromagnetic spectrum that surrounds us and
impacts on our lives. From X-rays to microwaves, from ultraviolet to infrared, we’ll
explore the world of colour. We’ll find out
what colour really is, how our colour vision
works and explore insects that can see into
the ultraviolet, snakes that sense invisible
infrared radiation and birds whose colour
vision is far more sensitive than ours. Following the multiple award-winning “Limits
of Perception” and “Time Limits”, this is
the third part of the trilogy that explores
beyond the limits of our everyday perceptions.
The climate is changing, global temperature
is rising. The impacts are already apparent, especially in the mountains but also in
the lowlands. The permafrost zone is shifting higher up and the masses of snowmelt
whooshing from the glaciers to the valleys
are already increasing incessantly. Rivers
are going to rise up to powerful floods and
dwindle down to extremely low waters the
next second. “Alpine Meltdown” takes us to
a future world, presenting changes that have
already occurred and pursuing the question
how the alpine landscapes are going to look
like at the end of the 21st century.
Life on earth captured through satellite technology – a unique
picture from space that offers an extraordinary and different
view of our planet. Our space detectives create precise satellite pictures and spot potential problems. Floods and fires can
be tracked daily and movements of ocean currents and snow
cover can be followed throughout the season. “Big Picture”
opens the skies to let us peak as an outsider into a palette of
discoveries on earth.
Up to the present day we don’t know exactly where lightning
strikes come from and how they are created. This documentary
focuses on the current state of lightning and thunder storm research using latest digital video technology. It will trace the myth
of ball lightning and go into detail of a lightning strike’s anatomy
as well as provide answers to sprites and lightning bolts that explode into the depth of space.

Mistresses of the Vienna Congress – Sex, Lies and Diplomacy
Der Wiener Kongress und die Macht der Frauen
Since childhood, Archduke Maximilian,
brother of Emperor Franz Josef I., has
wished for nothing more than to emerge
from his sibling‘s shadow. His dream finally
comes true when he becomes Emperor of
Mexico. However, the dream unexpectedly
and rapidly becomes a nightmare: Maximilian believes he is welcome in Mexico, but
the opposite is the case. He is finally captured by his adversary, Benito Juarez, and
sentenced to death. Maximilian’s dreams
of becoming a glorious ruler die with him,
cut down by a firing squad. To mark the
150th anniversary of Maximilian‘s ascent to
the throne in 2014, the documentary will
examine the fate of the contradictory and
complex Habsburg and investigate the circumstances that led to his tragic failure
from various perspectives.
Autumn 1814: Vienna stood at the center of
the world at that time, as, after 25 years of
revolutionary upheaval and the end of the
Napoleonic Wars, the Congress of Vienna,
the largest gathering of the leading statesmen of their time to date, was intended
to bring a stable framework for peace to
Europe. However, the monarchs and diplomats did not take the important decisions
in the conference rooms, but rather in the
ballrooms and parlours. Social occasions
and riotous parties were the breeding
ground for affairs and manipulation, intrigues and pacts, at which the mistresses and lovers of the statesmen pulled the
strings. This docudrama tells the story of
the Congress of Vienna from the viewpoint
of three mistresses. Their roles produce a
picture that is as enigmatic as it is entertaining of this historically important major
event, the 200th anniversary which will be
marked in 2014/15.

From his birth in 1556 on Tenerife, Petrus Gonsalvus suffered
from a rare condition now called “hypertrichosis” or “Ambras
syndrome”: his body, including his face, was completely covered with hair, leading people to believe he was a talking ape.
At the age of ten he was given as a gift to King Henry II of
France, where he soon entertained the court with his brilliant
conversation and fluent French, Italian and Latin. Court scholars
decided to test if he really was human and the pretty daughter
of a court servant was bribed into marrying Gonsalvus. Petrus
and Catherine had several children. Sadly those which inherited their father’s rare condition were given away to other noble
courts in Europe. “Gonsalvus – The Real Beauty and the Beast”
– the archetypal tale of how ignorance and cruelty can only be
overcome by love.
It is the world’s most mysterious manuscript. A book, written by
an unknown author, illustrated with pictures that are as bizarre as
they are puzzling – and written in a language that even the best
cryptographers have been unable to decode. No wonder then,
that this script even has a part in Dan Brown’s bestseller, “The
Lost Symbol”. The Voynich Manuscript has captivated academics and occultists in equal measure since its discovery 100 years
ago. The decoders of the Japanese Purple Code, physicists with
high-performance modern computers and polymath historians
have all tried their luck. But to date nobody has been able to decipher the book’s contents. “The Voynich Code” follows a completely new lead in the hunt for the author’s identity and uncovers
the secret of the mysterious manuscript using the methods of
materials science.
An aristocratic demon hunting for human
blood, who strikes unsuspecting mortals at
night – everyone knows the grim story of
Count Dracula. Now scientists can reveal
the truth: The vampire story as we know
it isn’t modelled on a medieval count from
Transylvania but on the fate of a Bohemian princess from the early 18th century.
She suffered from an allergy to light and
could only leave her living quarters secretly at night. As a terrible fear of vampires
swept central Europe at that time the people of the small village went into hysterics and committed a horrible crime. This
documentary traces the origins of all the
vampire myths by uncovering a gruesome
murder.
In 1953, Edmund Hillary was the first person to conquer Mount Everest, the world’s
highest mountain. That is what the history books tell us. However, the German
researcher, Jochen Hemmleb, casts doubt
on this belief. Just below the summit of
Mount Everest he and his team discovered the well-preserved body of George
Mallory, who in 1924, had made an assault
on the peak with his climbing partner
Andrew Irvine. Did Mallory stand on the
summit 30 years before Hillary? To find an
answer to this question, in 2010 we follow
Jochen Hemmleb on a further risky search
expedition on the roof of the world.
Two places and one mountain in the Austrian province of Tyrol changed the world.
They took humankind from the depth of
the Middle Ages to modern times. They
helped the Habsburgs and the German
commercial traders in attaining power
and wealth. Here is where 80 percent of
the world’s silver supply was mined. An
instrument of payment was established
right here, the “Taler”, which would later
become the world-renowned “Dollar. Today they have sunken into a long sleep:
The cities of Schwaz and Hall in Tyrol and
the Falkenstein “Silver Mountain”. This film
revives the historic lives of these cities by
experiencing the day-today lives of the
miners.

Wild Vienna – Waterland Warriors
Wiener Wildnis – Die Rückkehr der Biber
Lake Constance
Wildnis Bodensee
Lake Neusiedl – Expedition through the Reeds
Neusiedler See – Wildnis im Schilf
The Blue Danube is Vienna’s lifeline and a
lifeline for beavers making their way back
after their extermination in the last century. This documentary follows a young
beaver setting off in search of his own
territory. As the babbling meadow brooks
turn into narrow covered channels he soon
finds himself right in the centre of Vienna.
But if he can make it through, Paradise
awaits upstream. Meter-high reeds, twisting side-channels, and lots and lots of food
await our beaver – and, who knows, maybe
a young female. On his way, he encountered some of the many bizarre creatures
that inhabit any metropolis. Who would
have expected deer, moufflons, garish amphibians and fish, crazy butterflies whose
caterpillars develop underwater, and spiders that spend an entire life without ever
coming to the surface? Spectacular underwater macrophotography opens a door on
an unsuspected universe on our doorstep.
No other European destination has as many incoming and outgoing “flights” as Lake Constance: it’s the main hub for migratory birds in Western Europe. Over 300 different species pass
through every year: over a quarter of a million birds. Lake Constance is so large that, standing on one shore, the Earth’s curvature stops you seeing the opposite bank. This body of water
is large enough to influence the climate, and the soil is so fertile
it creates its own eco-system. Red-crested pochards, whooper
swans, alpine swifts – and raccoons: the lake is home to a myriad
of species. This documentary explores above and below the water and on the banks of this lake which links Austria to Germany
and Switzerland – with no borders in between.
As the blood-red sphere sinks beneath the horizon, the calls
of birds, frogs and the Western Marsh-harrier cut through the
twilight. Human onlookers watching the dramatic sunset on the
lake are plagued by swarms of mosquitoes. No doubt about it:
this is the westernmost point of the East, Austria’s only steppe
lake. Lake Neusiedl is just two metres deep and is surrounded
by an immense reed jungle – a world practically inaccessible to
humans. Yet deer and Golden jackal thrive among the reeds;
like Acrocephalus warblers and Nonagria moths they find concealment and plenty of food here. Around the edge of the lake
are ponds with a high concentration of salt – highly unusual in
Europe. Inhospitable though they may be, these areas are home
to Charadriidae birds, sea-monkeys, tarantulas and Europe’s
most poisonous spider, the yellow sac.
UNESCO has declared this National Park a world heritage site.
This film will capture breath-taking changes in wildlife through
the seasons. Latest technology like camera cable systems and
thermo graphic imaging help the film penetrate deep into the
reeds, the beating heart of the landscape.

Dolomite Fairytales
Die sagenhafte Welt der Dolomiten
A Gentle Giant – Mount Oetscher
Ötscher – Der sanfte Riese
Lost City of the Gladiators – Carnuntum
Carnuntum – Stadt der Gladiatoren
Untamed wilderness around distinctive rocks touched by the
golden glimmer of sunset: this gorgeous view could only be of
the Dolomites. It’s a place for myths and fairy tales, and there’s
no shortage of them here. But between the rocks, hidden in the
shady creeks, wildlife creates new stories and fables, day by
day. Take the lonesome wolf that roamed up from the Appenines in search of a mate – and finally found her here. Here we
also meet the red fox carelessly at ease in all the different habitats: forest, bare rock, meadows, abandoned huts, even snow
and ice. Few animals are so adaptable. But among the rocks is
a more specialized and even more skillful four-legged climber
– the chamois. Contemplating the Dolomites’ wildlife seems to
give this region a new shape – and perhaps helps you understand some of the region’s immortal legends.
Compared to it’s fellow summits in the Alps, the Oetscher is
not very high: in fact, less than 2000 metres. But among the
gentler slopes of western Lower Austria, it really is a giant,
with shoulders broad enough to carry the last of the Alps’ virgin forests, the country’s coldest plateau where temperatures
fall to -50°, the oldest trees in all of Austria, and her very own
Grand Canyon, the “Tormäuer”. Yet in making access difficult
for human settlers, the gentle giant has succeeded in protecting its primary fauna: the capercaillie – rare in other parts of
Europe – still makes its home in the coniferous forests, while
snow grouse roam above the tree-line. Hawks lie in wait, while
otters hunt in brooks. Even the brown bear found refuge on
the Oetscher’s mountainsides.
The Arena: the glory and tragedy of the
Roman Empire. Here a Gladiator was a
superstar, who was just delaying his inevitable fate. Have you ever wondered who
the Gladiators were, how they lived and
died? This film reconstructs a training arena and uses it to pit the different Gladiator
skills against one another. We virtually reconstruct the entire Gladiator School and
around this we recreate the entire city of
Carnuntum, destroyed by an earthquake
in AD350. Carnuntum Gladiators were exported throughout the Empire – mutilated
skeletons were found as far away as York,
England and there are more, right here,
on-site. This trade in spectacle and death
displays history’s greatest empire in a new
way. Following revelations at Stonehenge
for BBC, PBS, ZDF and ORF revolutionary
archaeologist Wolfgang Neubauer uses
lasers, magnetometers and ground-penetrating radar to peel off layer after layer of
remains, reconstructing them into amazing
3D structures. It’s pure time-travel, recreating the look of Carnuntum in any century,
even any decade!
