Backgrounder
Children’s Miracle Network® is a non-profit
organization that raises funds for more than
170 children’s hospitals. Countless individuals,
organizations and media partners unite with
Children’s Miracle Network hospitals to help
sick and injured kids in local communities.
Donations to Children’s Miracle Network create
miracles by funding medical care, research and
education that save and improve the lives of 17
million children each year.
Every child deserves the hope and healing of
children’s hospitals. With the help of a Children’s
Miracle Network hospital in their community,
children of all ages and backgrounds can receive
treatment for every imaginable disease and
injury—from asthma and broken bones to
cancer and heart defects. Children’s hospitals
are also on the front lines of research, education
and outreach programs that keep millions of
kids out of the hospital each year.
This year alone, Children’s Miracle Network
hospitals will provide charity care worth
billions, yet these children’s hospitals depend
on community support to help fund their vital
services.
To ensure children’s hospitals have the resources
they need, Children’s Miracle Network’s
partners conduct thousands of special events
and grassroots fundraisers year-round.
Corporate partners sell Miracle Balloons, radio
and television stations broadcast stories of
medical miracles, and college students hold
Dance Marathons—just a few of the programs
generating millions of dollars each year to
provide the life-saving care and crucial services
kids need.

ΠΠ New respiratory therapy developed at
Shands Children’s Hospital at the University
of Florida has increased the survival rate for
newborns with diaphragmatic hernia from
50-60 percent to 92 percent.
ΠΠ In 1982, pediatric cardiologist Zuhdi
Lababidi of MU Children’s Hospital in
Missouri performed the world’s first
procedure to correct heart defects in the
tiniest of infants.
ΠΠ In 2003, the Brain Tumor Research Center
team at SickKids in Toronto identified for
the first time a cancer stem cell in both
malignant and benign brain tumors.
ΠΠ Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong-New
York researchers were the first to administer
a lung ventilator device to premature
infants, dramatically improving their
survival rates.
ΠΠ Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta performed
liver transplants on the youngest and

smallest recipients in the world: The
youngest patient was 10 days old and the
smallest patient weighed 2 pounds.
ΠΠ Groundbreaking research at Alberta
Children’s Hospital in Canada helped brain
surgeons operate on children with epilepsy
at a younger age, when there was greater
potential to cure seizures.
ΠΠ At Doernbecher Children’s Hospital at
Oregon Health & Science University in
1988, Earl Palmer, MD, developed the first
effective treatment for a leading cause of
acquired blindness in children.
The Impact of Children’s Miracle Network
ΠΠ Every step of life is a literal challenge
for Danielle Roeder. She was born with
levodopa-responsive dystonia, which
impedes her ability to walk. Children’s
Miracle Network ensured that Danielle’s
family was financially able to deal with
extensive hospital bills, physical therapy
bills and frequent travel expenses.
ΠΠ Children’s Miracle Network funds
purchased PICU equipment used to
treat Kaley Dugger, who was diagnosed
with bacterial meningitis and underwent
a kidney transplant. Equipment made possible by Children’s Miracle Network included turbotemp thermometers that instantly assessed Kaley’s temperature, stethoscopes attached to each
bed for infection control, and laser guided IV starters.
ΠΠ For unknown reasons, RJ Smith went into heart failure and was rushed to his Children’s Miracle
Network hospital. After three hours of CPR, RJ was placed on ECMO, a life-support treatment,
and a special ventilator, both of which were purchased with Children’s Miracle Network funds.
Today RJ is thriving.
ΠΠ Drew Foster was born with brittle bones disease, which impacts his every move. To help
him increase his ability and endurance, Drew uses a special pediatric treadmill that goes at
the slowest speed possible. Children’s Miracle Network funds purchased the treadmill for
approximately $2,000, but its results with Drew have been priceless.
ΠΠ Shannon Smowton was stricken with a deadly kidney disease after being infected by E. coli
bacteria at a local petting zoo. Children’s Miracle Network funds purchased the ambulance that
transferred her to the hospital. Neuromonitoring equipment used to measure Shannon’s brain
function was also purchased with Children’s Miracle Network funds.
ΠΠ “Children’s Miracle Network has impacted our lives greatly and changed our lives forever.
Without Children’s Miracle Network and children’s hospital our kids may never have had
a chance. Without the help and support from donors, Children’s Miracle Network and the
hospitals wouldn’t be as great as they are,” said Lisa Ballard, mother of Connor and Caden, who
were both diagnosed with leukemia.
