Welcome
T R A N S AT L A N T I C
Business Conference
Dear Guests of the Ninth Annual Transatlantic Business Conference,
A year filled with highs and lows is drawing to a close. Over the past 10 months, the transatlantic partnership has been put to the test and proved
itself once again. The values shared by the US and Europe continue to serve as a guidepost in the search to find constructive solutions – in the
successful effort to reach an agreement with Iran as well as in the joint attempt to bring peace to Ukraine. On the business level, new challenges

President, AmCham Germany
have arisen – challenges that require a firm framework, bold actors and an active transatlantic dialogue.
The focus of this year’s conference is the responsibility taken by business leaders who have to respond with increasing speed to the shock waves
unleashed by the interplay of political forces, technological advances and global competition in order to fortify the foundation of peace and prosperity for future generations.
One clear sign of the about-face that has occurred in international business is the dramatic shift in EU exports to Russia (–34%) and the US
(+22%) seen during the first five months of 2015 compared with the same period in the previous year. Is the transatlantic partnership strong enough
to withstand international crises simply by drawing on its shared values? The US has learned one lesson: To move forward, the country must rely on

German Industries (BDI)
more than just trade and the service sector. An ambitious reindustrialization program is attracting production companies to return to the country,
creating major challenges for other business locations. Lightning-speed technological change is stoking this global competition. The revolution
triggered by digitization is comparable in many ways to the transformation that occurred at the dawn of the Industrial Age around 200 years ago.
Tremendous challenges – as well as tremendous opportunities – are arising for the economies of the US, Germany and Europe. Companies on both
sides of the Atlantic are joining forces with political leaders in concluding negotiations on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) in
order to forge an even closer transatlantic community by creating joint standards and preparing the community to face its global competition.
The Transatlantic Business Conference is committed to fostering this dialogue and helping craft joint courses of action. Each fall, this forum for busi-

ness, political and diplomatic decisionmakers addresses crucial issues and challenges being faced by the European-American partnership. With its keynote addresses, panel discussions with international experts and in-depth workshops, the conference serves as a discussion platform for transatlantic
leaders. Thanks to our co-organizers, partners, supporters and speakers from both sides of the Atlantic, the Transatlantic Business Conference has
become a must-attend event for the transatlantic community. We would like to thank you for your support. Our conference would not exist without it.

Open Discussion: Peace through Trade, Freedom through Strength –
The Geostrategic Challenges Facing the Transatlantic Partnership
Geostrategic issues have emerged as a crucial area in the debate about the Transatlantic Trade and Investment
Partnership (TTIP). Free trade is critical for peace and prosperity in Europe. Can a convincing concept of partnership on the commercial and political levels be developed to offset the rising wave of nationalism being seen in
other parts of the world, thereby jointly shaping the face of globalization?

Opening Panel: The Reindustrialization Race – Do the Strengths of
the US and EU Complement Each Other in Global Competition?
The US is experiencing an industrialization revival, a transformation in which German companies are
participating as well. Favorable energy costs, business incentives and an inspiring environment for
digital solutions are enhancing the appeal of business locations there.
As the economic engine in the heart of Europe, Germany offers highly trained skilled workers and
strength to innovate unmatched in terms of patent registrations per 1 million residents – a capability
that even outpaces the US. But how can Germany and Europe turn their strengths into commercial
success? Do we need stronger economic and industrial policies like those in the US? Or should we view
the divergent strengths as an opportunity to complement each other and jointly take on global
competitors?

Closing Panel:
Digitization as a Driving Force of the Transatlantic Partnership
Electronics companies that make connected vehicles and mail-order businesses that offer an array of
payment options – digital and interlinked solutions are changing development processes and supply
chains in the business world. In the process, real-time data about customers, partners, products and
processes are growing increasingly important. The major data users are based in the US, while
traditional industry is (still) in Europe with Asia catching up. How can the US and Europe compete
globally? Joint standards developed by the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) could
create an edge for both sides of the Atlantic in the race against Asia. But will digitization produce
greater prosperity for everyone just as industrialization had once done?

Digital Industry Convergence – How New Technologies and Business Models Create Cross-Industry
Value Experiences
Decreasing costs of digital technologies and increasing computational and cognitive power drive adoption of new products and services at an unprecedented
pace. Traditional industries such as healthcare, retail and transport are challenged by fast-paced innovation arising from non-traditional competitors who
consolidate products and services to offer unique customer experiences. In the future, the majority of disruptive product innovation will be inspired from
outside the innovator’s industry. How do these new innovators attack? And how can established industries shape their own destiny in the wake blurring
boundaries and instant disruption?

Medical technology is a very innovative sector of the economy with strong
growth potential. Companies and research organizations on both sides of the
Atlantic are driving this development forward with the US, Germany and
Europe important markets that continously generate innovative momentum.
The panelists will present innovative developments from within their
companies. Standards help open up this highly regulated market and support
inventions to reach the market as products and services. However, different
standards in the US and Europe lead to significant additional costs in the
approval process. Agreeing on common standards at an early stage in
innovative sectors can help bring together these two markets, thus reducing
the distorting effect on competition caused by different regulatory frameworks.

Morgan Lewis: International Business and Legal Compliance –
How to Run a Global Company and Avoid Regulatory Problems
The legal and regulatory environment facing German, US and international companies is increasingly complex and poses substantial risks. Daily headlines
report major companies being forced to pay large monetary fines, having to adjust their businesses to deal with changes in laws and policies, and even
defending against claims of misconduct and illegal activity. To protect themselves and their business, companies need to adopt an aggressive compliance
strategy that will mitigate these risks and facilitate a quick and effective response when problems arise. We will explain how to design and implement an
internal compliance program and review best practices for international players.

mindset to tackle the challenges of the digital world. In this workshop, we will engage with this discussion using case examples, demonstrating how both
countries can benefit from their respective strengths and learn from one another in the digital age. In the process, it will become clear that German companies

Commerzbank:
The Dollar – Our Currency, Your Problem?
T R A N S AT L A N T I C
Business Conference
The superpower status of the US also applies to its currency – not just since the recent euro and Greek crises. Criticism of the world’s reserve currency is
legendary, as is the robust statement of US Treasury Secretary John Connolly in 1971: “The dollar is our currency – but your problem”.
Over time, there have been numerous attempts by the rest of the world to seek independence from the dollar as well as insulation from fluctuations
in US economic policy. The euro is such an attempt as is the desired internationalization of China’s currency. These efforts have not yet succeeded.
Moreover, analysts argue that there are practical reasons for having only one global reserve currency.

T R A N S AT L A N T I C

Information security and cyber-risk currently rank right at the top of the agenda for many managing directors, boards of management and supervisory boards.
But internationally recognized standards and approaches to analyzing and controlling risks are often not enough to tackle the growing risks from digitization

White & Case: Post-Merger Integration
Making the Deal Work – Integration Strategies and Success Factors
Experienced buyers understand that completing the transaction itself is only the beginning of the process. The objectives of the deal can only be achieved
through successful integration of the target company. In the end, the post-merger integration will decide on the success or failure of the merger and whether
growth and value creation targets can be reached. What legal problems arise during the integration process? And how can the successful integration of the
target company be ensured so that the objectives of the deal are achieved? This workshop will discuss the key issues involved in successful integration.
