Auf “Space Squid” greift der Schlagzeuger Bill Stewart nach den Sternen und lotet zugleich die
Tiefen aus – mit einer Band geistesverwandter musikalischer Forscher: Saxophonist Seamus Blake, Pianist Bill
Carrothers und Bassist Ben Street. In zehn Eigenkompositionen von Stewart und einem Standard
reicht die Skala von Ehrfurchtslosigkeit bis zur Offenbarung.

seiner Kräfte als Spieler und Komponist. Sein musikalischer
Lebenslauf liest sich wie ein „Who’s who“ der letzten 25

Holland zu tun. Seine musikalische Beziehung zu zwei
meisterhaften Pianisten, Marc Copland und Bill Carrothers,
ist von besonderer Bedeutung. Stewart ist auf zwei von
Coplands zehn Pirouet-Veröffentlichungen zu finden und
auf dreien von acht, die Carrothers herausgebracht hat.
Und Carrothers ist auf dem vorliegenden Album vertreten.
Stewart hatte einige neue Kompositionen, die er aufnehmen wollte, und er stellt gerne Gruppen zusammen, die
seiner Vorstellung nach besonders gut zu der betreffenden
Musik passen. Die vorliegende Band ist ein typisches Beispiel: Die Musiker spielten einen Gig, und dann gingen sie

ins Aufnahmestudio. Stewarts Partnerschaft mit Carrothers und Blake reicht um die zwanzig Jahre zurück. Die
beiden haben bereits mit Stewart gearbeitet und aufgenommen, und der wiederum ist auf fünf von Carrothers’
und drei von Blakes Alben vertreten. Beschrieben als eine
„Mischung aus Träumer, Desperado und Monty-PythonKomiker“, kann Carrothers von sich behaupten, der einzige
international berühmte Jazzmusiker in der Umgebung von
Mass City auf der oberen Michigan-Halbinsel zu sein.
Auf der Liste seiner musikalischen Partner finden sich Lee
Konitz, Bennie Wallace, Dave Douglas, Drew Gress oder
auch Gary Peacock, und er hat eine ganze Reihe CDs unter
eigenem Namen gemacht. Stewart sagt: „Bill hat seinen
eigenen Klang und Stil; er geht spontan mit Harmonien und
Stimmführungen um, und er entlockt dem Klavier eigene
Sounds und Strukturen. Sein Spiel ist eigenständig und auf
Anhieb identifizierbar. Es gefällt mir, dass er all dies in die
Musik einbringt.“ Saxophonist Seamus Blake hat selbst
eine vielgepriesene Gruppe, er hat den renommierten Thelonious-Monk-Wettbewerb gewonnen und mit Schwergewichten wie John Scofield, Dave Douglas, Kenny Barron
und Christian McBride Aufnahmen gemacht. „Seamus hat
ganz wache Ohren und findt ganz schnell den Kern neuer
Kompositionen. Und es gibt eine lyrische Seite in seinem
Spiel, die ich sehr mag.“ Bassist Ben Street fiel Stewart vor
noch nicht so langer Zeit auf, als Street Mitglied in Scofields Band wurde; Blake und Stewart haben auch in Lage
Lunds Band zusammengearbeitet. Street ist alles andere
als ein Neuling auf der Szene, er hat mit Sam Rivers, Billy
Hart, Mark Turner und Kurt Rosenwinkel gespielt. „Ich mag
seine Energie – er ist ungemein sensibel und beweglich,
und es geht ihm immer ganz um die Musik“, begeistert sich
Stewart. Eines deutet schon mal darauf hin, dass Stewarts
Wahl der Bandmitglieder die richtige war: End of Earth,
Septemberism, Space Squid und Dancing in the Dark waren
alle first takes.

Bill schreibt normalerweise erst die Stücke und sucht dann
Namen für sie. Das ist auch hier der Fall. „Ich suche nach
Titeln, die mir zur Musik zu passen scheinen und zugleich
auch für sich schon interessant klingen. Die Titel sind aber
eigentlich nicht so wichtig. Die Musik ist wichtig für mich.“
Paris Lope entstand in Paris, nach einem mittäglichen Fußweg vom Hotel zum Club, wo die Band am Nachmittag vor
dem Auftritt noch proben wollte. Etwas Tiefblaues hat das
Stück und etwas faszinierend Dunkles in der Art, wie die
Musiker sich gegenseitig ausspielen. End of Earth ist eine
Ballade mit apokalyptischer Stimmung und offenem Ende.
Stewarts rollende Wellen aus Drum-Sounds und Symbolen
treiben die Musik auf das Ersterben der Melodie zu. Eine
siebentaktige, wiederholt gespielte Melodie und karge,
kantige Harmonik lassen in Tincture Farbenvielfalt entstehen, während einzelne Töne zu einem treibenden Drum-

Solo im Hintergrund Akzente setzen. Das unmittelbar vor
dem Aufnahmedatum im September entstandene Stück
Septemberism hat eine achttaktige Melodie und schmuckloses 3/4-Drumming, überlagert von etwas, das Stewart
als „bizarre Lead-Stimme“ bezeichnet; und es hinterlässt
den Hörer rätselnd darüber, ob diese Herbstatmosphäre
eher düster oder eher skurril ist. Etwas Hüpfendes, Springendes und einen Hauch Latin-Feeling haben die geraden
Achtel von Happy Walk. In Drop of Dusk verdunkelt sich die
Stimmung; laut Stewart wurde dieses Stück von Carrothers
beeinflusst: „Ich dachte, das spielt ihm in die Hände, und
ich glaube, das hat geklappt.“ Mit Blake am Sopransaxophon entsteht da ein tief grundiertes lyrisches Spiel. Auf
dem mittelschnellen Dead Ringer arbeiten Sopran und
Klavier die glockenartige Qualität des Themas heraus,

Sopran-Solo ist ein Hauch John Coltrane – er kopiert nicht,
bereichert sein Spiel aber durch Anspielungen. Als langsam
swingendes, bluesiges Stück mit einer Dreiviertel-Untermauerung zeigt Blue Sway mit unüblicher Form und
Har-monik, dass Blues ein Feeling ist und kein Dogma.
Wie auch in anderen Stücken, gibt es hier diesen scheinbar
kreisenden Impressionismus im Klavierspiel und die vorantreibenden rhythmischen Verlagerungen und Schübe des
Schlagzeugs. Stewart treibt ein reizvolles Verwirrspiel mit
seinem feinsinnigen Besen-Einsatz am Anfang und Ende
von If Anyone Asks You; er sagt: „Das Stück ist so nah wie
nur möglich an meiner Idee, etwas zu schreiben, das wie
ein Standard klingt. Es hat diese sehr typische AABA-Form
und eine lange Legato-Melodie, die leicht zu singen ist. Ich
schreibe normalerweise nicht auf diese Art, aber es ist
wirklich nicht einfach, einen guten Standard zu schreiben.
Bill spielt den Song zunächst wunderschön als Rubato-Ballade, und dann steigen wir in einem Foxtrott-Tempo ein,
Seamus findet einige hübsche eigene Melodien in dieser
Aufnahme.“ Space Squid ist ein Trio von Saxophon, Schlagzeug und Bass mit einem abgeschrägten Avant-Rock-Beat,
einer leicht verdrehten Melodie und einem stratosphärischen Tenor-Solo. Ein wirklich abgespaceter Kopffüßler!
(„Squid“ heißt Tintenfisch, und der gehört zu den Kopffüßlern.) Zu Dancing in the Dark erklärt Stewart folgenden Hintergrund: „Ich hatte das Stück zuhause auf dem Klavier
gespielt – und es gefiel mir, die schöne Einleitung in halbem
Tempo in die Song-Form zu integrieren – und das wollte ich
auch in der Session mit der Band probieren. Wir nahmen
einen Take auf, der für meine Ohren sehr gut klang, also
wollte ich das Stück mit auf die CD nehmen. Mir gefällt
auch die Atmosphäre, die entsteht, wenn man die Aufnahme mit einer ruhigen Note abschließt.“
Bill Stewart gehört zur Spitze der gegenwärtigen Instrumentalisten und Komponisten. Sein Spiel und seine Stücke
haben die Lektionen vergangener Meister aufgesogen und
auf diesem Fundament eine eigene musikalische Sprache
entwickelt. Für Stewart und seine Mitmusiker ist Verspielt-

heit, Eulenspiegelei und schiere Spielfreude ein mit der nötigen Ernsthaftigkeit betriebenes Geschäft. Sie haben sich
zur Aufgabe gewählt, ihre Gedanken und Gefühle und ihr
Konzept von Schönheit mit allen dazugehörigen Eigenarten
und Launen für alle hörbar zu machen. Die Drei liebkosen
und überfallen die Musik aus allen Winkeln. Bei jedem Anhören kann man neue Perspektiven und Einsichten entdecken und zu Tage fördern. Bill Stewart sagt, er habe die CD
Space Squid genannt, weil er „den Klang des Titels“ möge.
Und er ist „auch ein bisschen fasziniert von Tintenfischen
und Kraken. Köstlich schmecken können sie noch dazu.“
Man kann sich das Augenzwinkern vorstellen, das er bei
dieser Bemerkung hatte. Auch diese Musik ist faszinierend
und köstlich – ernsthaftes Vergnügen eben.

His musical relationship with two masterful pianists, Marc
Copland and Bill Carrothers is of particular note: Stewart
is on two of Copland’s ten and three of Carrothers’ eight
PIROUET offerings. And Carrothers is on the present album.
Stewart had some new compositions of his that he wanted
to record, and Bill enjoys assembling groups that he envisions will fit the music at hand. This gathering is a case in
point: they did one gig, then stepped into the New York
studio to record. Stewart’s playing history with Carrothers
and Blake goes back some 20 years. They have both previ-

ously worked and recorded with Stewart, and Bill is on five
of Carrother’s and three of Blake’s albums. Described as a
“mixture of dreamer, desperado, and Monty Python humorist,” Carrothers has the distinction of being the only internationally renowned jazz musician living in the environs of
the village of Mass City in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. His
playing credits include Lee Konitz, Bennie Wallace, Dave
Douglas, Drew Gress, and Gary Peacock, as well as a couple of handfuls of CDs under his own name. Stewart commented that, “Bill has his own sound and style; he has a
spontaneous way with his harmonies and voicings, and is
able to get his own sounds and textures out of the piano.
It’s original, and immediately identifiable. I like it that he
brings all this to the music.” Besides leading his own acclaimed group, saxophonist Seamus Blake has won the
prestigious Thelonious Monk competition, and recorded
with such heavies as John Scofield, Dave Douglas, Kenny
Barron, and Christian McBride. “Seamus has great ears
and can quickly get to the core of original music. There is
also a lyrical side to his playing that I really like.” Bassist
Ben Street has come into Stewart’s musical view more recently, when Ben became a member of Scofield’s band;
Blake and Stewart also worked together with Lage Lund’s
group. Street is no newcomer to the scene, having played
with Sam Rivers, Billy Hart, Mark Turner, and Kurt Rosenwinkel. “I like his energy—he has such a good feeling and
flexibility, and always plays for the music”, Stewart enthuses. An indication of the rightness of Stewart’s choices: End
of Earth, Septemberism, Space Squid, and Dancing in the
Dark were all first takes.

Bill usually writes the pieces before he finds names for
them. That’s the case here: “I search for titles that seem to
fit the music and also sound interesting by themselves. Actually, the titles are not so important; the music is what is
important to me.” Paris Lope was written after a mid-day
walk from hotel to the Parisian club for an afternoon of
practicing before the gig. There’s a deep blue to the piece
and a dark richness in the way the musicians play off each
other. End of Earth is an open-ended ballad with an apocalyptic feel. Stewart’s rolling waves of drums and symbols
sweeps the music towards the ending melody. A seven bar
repeated melody and sparse angular chording infuse Tincture with a multiplicity of colors, as single-note backgrounds punctuate a driving drum solo. Written directly
before the September recording date, Septemberism’s
eight bar melody and stark, primitive 3-4 drumming, over-

laid with what Stewart defines as “bizarre voice leading”,
leaves one wondering is this fall atmosphere somber or
droll… There is a hop and a skip and maybe a hint of Latin
in the straight eights of Happy Walk. On Drop of Dusk the
atmosphere darkens; Stewart says the piece was somewhat influenced by Carrothers: “I thought it would play into
his hands, so to speak, and I think it did.” With Blake on
soprano, there is a deeply grounded lyricism in the play. On
the medium-up Dead Ringer, soprano and piano take on the
bell-like quality of the theme as the drums propel the music
forward. There’s a taste of Trane in Blake’s soprano solo—
no copy, it just adds to his presence. A slow-swinging bluesy piece with a three-four underpinning, Blue Sway’s unusual harmonies and form indicate that blues is a feeling,
not a dogma. As on other pieces, there’s this omni-directional impressionism of the piano—and the propulsive

rhythmic shifts and surges of the drums. Stewart dazzles
with his sensitive brush work on the beginning and end of If
Anyone Asks You. He says “it is as close as I have ever been
to writing something that sounds like a standard. It has that
very typical AABA form and has a long, legato melody that
is easy to sing. I don't usually write this way, but it’s actually not easy to write a good standard. Bill plays the song
beautifully as a rubato ballad at the start, and then we go
into the song in a fox trot tempo. Seamus finds some nice
melodies of his own on this.” Space Squid has sax, drums,
and bass in trio with a slanted avante-rock beat, a slightly
skewed melody, and a stratospheric tenor solo. A spacy
cephalopod indeed. As for Dancing in the Dark, Stewart
comments that, “I had been playing the song at home on
the piano, and liked playing the lovely interlude at half
speed as part of the song form, so I wanted to try it at the
session. It was done in only one take and came out great to
my ears, so I wanted to include it. I also like the vibe of it to
close the recording on a peaceful note.”
Bill Stewart is in the vanguard of the music’s contemporary
player-composers. His playing and writing has absorbed
the lessons of past masters and built on their foundations
to create his own musical language. For Stewart and his
fellow musicians, the playfulness, the musical pranks and
sheer joy of playing is serious business. They have made it
their life to put their thoughts and feelings, their conception
of beauty with all of its intimate idiosyncrasies and vaga-

ries, out in the open for all to hear. The musicians caress
and attack the music from every angle. Each new listening
detects and fosters new perspectives, new insights. Bill
Stewart says that he named the CD Space Squid because
“I like the sound of the title and I am slightly fascinated with
squid and octopus. They can also be delicious.” One can
imagine the twinkle in his eye when he said this. Fascinatingly delicious, this music is serious fun.
