D
ie erste Saxophonlinie ertönt – und schon sind die Bilder da. Der Vorführraum in einem alten Kino auf einem
sizilianischen Dorfplatz, die staunenden Augen des kleinen
Jungen, der sich mit dem Vorführer angefreundet hat, die
für die kindliche Wahrnehmung riesig erscheinenden Filmrollen auf dem Projektor. Und mit den Bildern die Sehnsuchtsstimmung. Der Sog. Die Magie. Und doch ist etwas
anders. Nicht die Geigen, wie im Original-Soundtrack
zu dem Kino-Hit Cinema Paradiso von Regisseur Giuseppe
Tornatore, seufzen hier von einer wunderbaren Welt. Keine
gefühlstrunkene Fülle hebt an. Sondern der auf ganz feine
Art eindringliche Klang eines Jazzquartetts – und der geht
ganz schnell eigene Wege, weg von den Bildern, hin zu einer
ganz eigenen Intensität der Töne. Diese Aufnahmen greifen
die Erinnerung an die bewegten Leinwandbilder auf und
entführen sie in eine eigene Welt. Und schnell wird klar:
Cinema Paradiso, die neue CD des Saxophonisten und
künstlerischen Leiters des Pirouet-Labels Jason Seizer, ist
keine Hommage an Bilder, sondern entschieden eine an die
Töne, die sie begleiten. Im zitierten Fall schiebt sich die
ergreifende Melodie, die der Filmmusik-Magier Ennio
Morricone schuf, vor die Bilder des Regisseurs und erlebt
im zeitgemäßen Jazzgewand von Jason Seizers Quartett
schillernde und am Ende eindringliche, fast schmerzlich
schöne Metamorphosen.

Cinema Paradiso, eine der berühmtesten Filmmusiken der
letzten Jahrzehnte, lieh zwar auch der ganzen CD den
Namen – aber die Stücke stammen aus vielen unterschiedlichen Filmen. Als da etwa sind: das von Alex North komponierte Liebesthema aus Spartacus (1960), die berühmte
Cavatina von Stanley Myers für den Film The Deer Hunter
von 1978, Carlotta’s Portrait aus Bernhard Herrmanns
Soundtrack zu Hitchcocks Vertigo (1958), Leonard Bernsteins Thema zu On the Waterfront (Die Faust im Nacken)
von Elia Kazan (1954), Jerry Goldsmiths Hauptthema zu
Ridley Scott’s Alien von 1979, Steve’s Care von Roque
Baños aus The Machinist von 2004 – und dazu so witzige
Stücke wie das hier nervös-pointenreich dahintreibende
Jungle Beat aus Walt Disneys Dschungelbuch (1967). Einige
große Klassiker spielt Seizers Quartett auf dieser Veröffentlichung. Und je länger man die Aufnahmen hört,
desto klarer wird: Es geht eben nicht um die Aura der Bilder
mit Darstellern wie Marlon Brando, Philippe Noiret oder
Kirk Douglas, sondern es geht um das eigenständige Leben, das großartige Filmmusik-Kompositionen entfalten
können. Gerade die Cavatina oder auch das SpartacusThema sind jüngeren Generationen auch ohne die Bilder
vertraut – weil die Musik auch für sich selbst so stark ist.

Jason Seizers Partner sind der Pianist Pablo Held (geboren
1986) – den er 2007 als 20-Jährigen ins Programm von
Pirouet nahm und der einer der herausragenden Künstler
des Labels wurde –, der Bassist Mathias Pichler (geboren
1981) und der Schlagzeuger Fabian Arends (geboren 1990):
Der 1964 in Stuttgart geborene Jason Seizer spielt hier also
mit Kollegen der nächsten Generation, die sich alle in unterschiedlichen Projekten bestens ausgezeichnet haben
und etwa im Falle von Fabian Arends zu den ganz jungen
Entdeckungen der Jazz-Szene zählen. Es sind alles sehr
starke musikalische Individuen, Held mit seiner Mischung
aus Komplexität und intimer Feinheit im Spiel, Pichler mit
seiner großen grundierenden Kraft und Arends mit seiner
filigranen Freiheit und immensen Beweglichkeit. Das alles

kommt Seizer, einem Saxophonisten mit entschiedener
Strenge und Klarheit des Spiels und einer konsequenten
Vermeidung von Klischees oder »Licks«, sehr entgegen.
»Zwei meiner großen Einflüsse«, so sagte er dem LinerNotes-Autor Marty Cook, »sind die legendären 1960er
Bands von John Coltrane und Miles Davis. Ich habe mich
stets mehr an das gehalten, wie Coltrane seine Band organisierte. Für mich hatte das eine größere Einheit, ein gemeinsames Ziel, während Miles’ Band mit Herbie Hancock
und Wayne Shorter eher eine Band aus Individuen war mit
einem disparateren Herangehen an die Musik. Das ist mehr
die Richtung, aus der Pablo kommt. Diese beiden
Arten von Zusammenspiel in der Gruppe sorgen für gute
kreative Spannung.«

Und so ist es. Ein offener Horizont kennzeichnet diese Aufnahmen. Die Band-Mitglieder bringen ihre Individualität
hier spürbar stark mit ein – die harmonische Freiheit des
Klaviers etwa, die gelassene Erdenschwere des Basses, die
fein ziselierte Quirligkeit des Schlagzeugspiels. Und doch
hat sich das Spiel dieses Quartetts zu einer faszinierend
geschlossenen ästhetischen Einheit geformt. Es entsteht
ein atmosphärischer Sog, der den Hörer immer mehr packt
– und in dem diese bekannten Melodien ein völlig eigenständiges Leben entwickeln. Mit berühmten FilmmusikInterpretationen von Jazzmusikern wie Yusef Lateef oder
Bill Evans treten diese Aufnahmen weder in Konkurrenz
noch bleiben sie hinter ihnen zurück: Sie gehen unbeirrt
einen ganz eigenen Weg.

Das tut Jason Seizer auch seit langem als Saxophonist.
Er ist ein Musiker, der sich dem allzu Geläufigen und jeder
Effekthascherei stets entschieden und manchmal auf fast
störrische Weise gesperrt hat. Allem allzu Leichten und
musikalisch schnell Hingeworfenen misstraut er. Dass er
das hier ebenso konsequent wie sonst tut, ist ein großer
Gewinn für den Hörer. Seizer spielt die Melodien in so
strenger Klarheit, dass allzu schmeichelnde und zu sehr auf
den blanken Wiedererkennungs-Effekt setzende Untertöne
nicht die geringste Chance haben. Pure Substanz sind die
Themen der Stücke bei ihm – und sie gehen in dichten,
immer stark am musikalischen Kern angelehnte Improvisationen auf. Sein Tenorsaxophon-Ton entfaltet dabei eine
aufregende Farbenvielfalt und große Wärme.

Cinematic Dreams
The music that makes the movie: on Cinema Paradiso
the classic themes from nine remarkable movies
are transformed, as saxophonist Jason Seizer along
with pianist Pablo Held, bassist Mathias Pichler,
and drummer Fabian Arends take flight into the deeper
reality that dreams are made of.

axophonist, composer, and PIROUET artistic director
Jason Seizer has a reputation as something of a maverick, someone who says what he thinks, and forges his own
path through the musical wilderness. Seizer’s tone is instantly recognizable; it breaths out a palatable warmth, yet
it is a warmth with an edge, a sense that it may not always
be sunny out there in La-La Land. His ideas, unencumbered
by pretense, are often understated, to the point; there are
also moments of intimate complexity in his playing. At 50,
he stands at the creative forefront of the music, with the
maturity and vision to move in whatever direction he chooses. On Cinema Paradiso, his newest album for Pirouet,
Seizer has pianist Pablo Held, bassist Matthias Pichler,
and drummer Fabian Arends with him, three young players
who possess the musical knowledge, skills and daring to
grab hold of the past and push the music into the vanguard
of the present. Held has proved to be one of the most
innovative and exciting piano players to break onto the international scene in the past few years. Seizer is partly
responsible for this recognition. In 2007 he recorded the
then 20 year old Held and his trio for Pirouet.
After seven years and six Pirouet recordings, what was
seemingly risky business with someone so young and relatively unknown turns out to be a case of brilliant foresight.
The pianist is an ideal match to Seizer’s own personal style.
They have similar open-ended views, a desire to take

chances, the creative know-how to make those chances
work. Their musical relationship is also something of amalgam. Seizer explains, “Two of my big influences are the
legendary 1960’s bands of John Coltrane and Miles Davis.
I’ve tended to gravitate towards the way Coltrane organized his band. For me it had more a unity, a common purpose, whereas, Miles’ band with Herbie Hancock and
Wayne Shorter was more a band of individuals, and there
was a more disparate approach to the music. That’s more
the direction Pablo comes from. These two ways of group
play makes for good creative tension.”
As to his choice of Pichler and Arends, Seizer pointed out
that for him using Held’s own trio members was not an
option, because they had already forged such strong personal identity; “Held’s trio already have their own style,
and I wanted something different. Pablo knows how to play
to fit to the players and the music. His style is quite different here.” Jason first got to know 33 year old Austrian bassist Mathias Pilcher through guitarist Peter O’Mara. Pichler
has already worked with some of the heavies of the international scene, and Jason marvels, “Mathias has such a
physical presence. He’s so down to earth in his playing,
he grounds the music, even when it’s complex, or openended. ”Pichler has been working with Jason since 2008,
and is the bassist on Seizer’s previous Pirouet album, the
acclaimed Time Being. Jason first played with 24 year old

drummer Fabian Arends in Cologne in 2012 when they both
were working in Held’s band at an awards concert. Jason
dug how natural it felt to play with him: “Fabian has a very
modern, free-wheeling style—he makes it easy to say what
you want to.”
Movie music is a ubiquitous part of modern life. Many of
the 20th and 21st century’s greatest jazz and classical
musicians have directed the emotional flow of cinema
classics, yet within the visual extravaganza of a darkened
theater, the impact and power of the music itself often goes
unnoticed. But without a good music score, most movies
wouldn’t make it. Perhaps musicians are more aware of the
music that makes the movie. After all, their situation on
a lighted stage performing before a shadowy public has a
similar aura of ritual enchantment. Jason says that, “I’ve
had it in my head for a long time to do a record using movie
themes. There are certain movies in my private collection,
like the Deer Hunter and Cinema Paradiso, that I love,
and I love the music from these films—they are great

vehicles for improvisation.” Spending time with Held over
the last few years, the idea finally began to make sense.
“Pablo’s a total cineaste. We talked a lot about movies
when we got together—what we’d seen, what we liked, and
we’d also talk about the sound tracks. We had a week in the
Unterfahrt with my new band last summer, and I thought
that would be a good time to work on the film music. We all
brought tunes in, and we hung out together and watched
the movies. We’d do the gig, then go home, and watch more
movies, and when we liked something, we’d talk about playing it. It was very much a group decision as to what we’d
play. Basically, we worked the same way on the album.”
Charlotte’s Portrait sets the atmosphere as Kim Novak
sits in front of a portrait that remarkably resembles herself,
and Jimmy Stewart secretly looks on. Here Seizer and Held
play around a minimalistic, contemplative theme behind a
single-note bass vamp. “We did several longer takes, but

they didn’t seem to have the right ambience, so I said, let’s
just play around the feeling of the scene.”
This free-flowing rendition of Cinema Paradiso has a taste
of the bittersweet to it. Seizer’s warm, breathy approach
and Held’s sparsely chorded solo keep close to melody and
to the point. Jason exclaims, “Morricone! I mean, it’s just a
simple melody and so beautiful—it’s so open—you can do
anything with it.”
From the first chords on, there is a menacing weight to
Steve’s Care as a dark, earthy bass solo merges into the
spare piano solo and then a tenor that portrays someone
on the edge. The band navigates its way through the shadows on their way back into the melody. For Jason, “This is a
piece that I immediately felt had something for me. The
melody has all kinds of “wrong” notes that proves that
there are no wrong notes.”

“Pablo brought On the Waterfront to the session—we
played it—and it was there on the first take—it felt easy,
although metrically there’s a ³/₄ bar in there but you don’t
realize it—the melody has that flow.” The drums have a
loose-together feeling on this minor-bluesy piece, just
as Jason’s solo and Held’s “accompaniment” are simplecomplex. There’s a real sense of group improvisation here.
“Cavatina is a killing composition—the way it moves, the
way the diminished chords develop going through the keys.
It’s a beautiful melody. What I like about the take we used
is the way the time is treated. We’re sort of bouncing off
of each other’s time. It’s loose, but it still locks in. I was
always in awe of this piece; although we were supposed to
play this live we never performed it. Then I brought it to the
session and we just did it.”

Jason states that, “Jungle Beat put me into a musical
space that I hadn’t been in before. This was a hit when we
played it live; when we went into the studio I wanted to do
it a different way to get a new slant. It has a fresh feeling.
I like that.” Here the bass line pulses through the changes
as the beating heart of the piece. The four disparate music
personalities shine through as Jason and then Pablo stretch
out.
Children’s Games is another one Pablo Held brought in for
the session. This poignant ballad suits the band’s openended play. Seizer comments, “When I heard it I immediately said yeah, I like that, let’s do it. It’s inspiring to play
something that I haven’t played before. We did it in one
take.”
“I first played Spartacus in the mid-nineties and I’ve always loved it. The tune has become something of a jazz
standard. We’ve often played it as an encore, and so it’s
fitting that it ends the album.”
There is a continuity to this CD, as if the disparate parts are
the movements of a symphonic whole. The original cinematic music that was used for the album has a symphonic
quality and if it is possible for a quartet to project an
orchestral aura, then it is this one. Like the best movies
there is something timeless Cinema Paradiso, a suspension of the everyday humdrum and a flight into a world that
intimates the deeper reality that dreams are made of.
Now turn off the lights, grab a seat and enjoy the music! The band’s version of the theme from Alien captures the
movie’s eerie sense of the unknown. For Jason, “The take
has this sense of searching, everyone listening to each
other to see where it was going to take us.”
