und ihre Musik, die wir auswählen und produzieren, haben etwas miteinander zu tun.
Stephan van Wylick hat diesen Querschnitt unseres noch jungen Schaffens
zusammengestellt, er erzählt von unserer Idee und unseren Vorstellungen von
Jazzmusik, Plattendesign und Musikproduktion, eben nicht nur „for promotion only”,
sondern als eigenständiges PIROUET Produkt, in welchem die aufregende Qualität
von Jazzmusik in ihrer Vielfalt und unsere Bemühungen
um diese zu einem eigenen Werk werden.
PIROUET is a “Gesamtkunstwerk”, a total work of art.
The various artists and their music, which we select and produce, are linked.
Stephan van Wylick has compiled this sample of our still juvenile activities.
He ruminates on our concept, our ideas of jazz music, record design
and music production, a concept that goes clearly beyond promotion only,
leading to an independent PIROUET product. A product blending the exciting
qualities of jazz music in its diversity with our constant endeavours,
thus creating a piece of work of its own.

HOW IT IS
This is how it is to
be a jazz musician
and not live in
New York.
You practice hours and hours,
you play better and better,
no one notices.
You form different bands,
playing all kinds of music,
duos, trios, octets, big bands,
no one notices.
No record dates,
No magazine articles,
No tours, nothing except
local gigs.
The temptation
to copy a sure thing,
to sound “like” Trane,
“like” Wayne, “like” Sonny,
is everywhere and
overwhelming.
The temptation
to try “tricks,”
electronics, pop tunes,
anything uncoventional
to attract attention
(no matter if it’s not musical)
is everywhere and
overwhelming.
This is how it is to
be a New York jazz musician
and not forget life is full
of surprises.
On the road,
in walks this saxophonist,
quiet, thoughtful,
handing me two cds –
“Listen to these,”
he said,
“Tell me what you think,”
he said.
I shrug my shoulders,
take the cd’s, and
fly back to
New York.
Some days later,
doing the dishes, why not now,
flipping on the player,
one track, still washing,
two tracks, still washing,
third track comes and
I stop dead and
turn the water off.
This is what makes me stop.
The solo comes –
measured, sprightly,
played with a maturity
and patience so hard
to find anywhere,
with a searching for
exactly the right phrase,
the right breath,
an awareness of
the power in one note.
