TO SUCCESS

HIC Pathways at UNIVERSITY OF HERTFORDSHIRE 2012
Hertfordshire: your campus, your home
Studying at HIC and University of Hertfordshire means
you will be living on the very edge of London. It is a
stunningly beautiful part of the UK, with many picturesque
riding bridleways, cycle trails and walks that link together
the county’s historic towns and villages. One of these,
Hatfield, is home to the university.
Old Hatfield retains many historic buildings,
the most notable being Hatfield House.
Elizabeth Tudor (later Queen Elizabeth I of
England) was confined here for three years
in what is now known as The Old Palace in
Hatfield Park. The area is also recognised
for its role in global aircraft manufacture
due to the establishment of the De
Havilland airfield and aircraft factory in Hatfield in 1930. During the next two decades De Havilland produced the
world-famous Gypsy Moth and Tiger Moth
biplanes, the Mosquito fighter bomber and
the world’s first jet airliner, the Comet.
From Hatfield it is only a 30-minute train
journey to Central London. Many local
residents commute to the city for work or for social events on a daily basis, while enjoying the relaxed lifestyle that
Hertfordshire offers. It is truly the best of both worlds.
London is a dynamic and exhilarating city, where you can enjoy a wide variety of entertainment, shopping and cultural or sporting activities. In 2012 it will also
host the Olympic Games. It comes as no
surprise that London is consistently rated
as one of the most exciting cities in the
world to visit.
Hertfordshire
London
You will soon discover that it is not only your studies that offer you exciting
challenges and experiences. Whether you
want to visit museums, theatres or libraries,
enjoy the city’s shopping, dining or
nightlife, see world-famous historic
attractions or simply sit and watch the
fascinating array of people, London has it all in abundance. You can also take
advantage of scheduled HIC excursions to other notable British cities including
Bath, Brighton, Cambridge, Plymouth,
Swansea, Portsmouth or Oxford, as well as various destinations in Europe such as Paris, Barcelona and Amsterdam.

Chirag Malhotra, from Calcutta, started his career in
motor sports in 2004 at the age of 13. In 2009 Chirag
was selected to race for the Red Rooster Karting team
in his home country of India. By 2011, Chirag had enrolled
with HIC and commenced his degree studies at the
De Havilland Campus, University of Hertfordshire.
Renowned as one of the top 25 UK
universities for Engineering, UH has very strong links within the motorsport
sector, providing enterprising placements
and a variety of employment prospects.
Remarkably, almost every F1 racing team employs a University of
Hertfordshire graduate.
Studying Motorsports Technology with HIC and the University of Hertfordshire,
coupled with the financial sponsorship of Navitas UK, Chirag has received the
exciting opportunity to participate in the 2011 Formula Renault Winter Cup.
Regarded as the premier and most
cost-effective junior single-seater series in the country, the Formula Renault series
provides the perfect entry-level category for all aspiring young drivers. The series has helped launch the careers of many
famous motorsport drivers, such as Kimi
Raikkonen, Heiki Kovalinen and the UK’s
Lewis Hamilton, who incidentally grew up in the town of Tewin, just 16km from the
University of Hertfordshire.
Everyone at HIC and Navitas UK are
cheering for Chirag’s success; we’re all looking forward to Chirag becoming the next HIC / UH celebrity alumni!

HIC Pathways at UNIVERSITY OF HERTFORDSHIRE 2012
Postgraduate pathway at HIC
and University of Hertfordshire
A postgraduate pathway will give you valuable insight
into postgraduate-level studies in the UK. Most importantly,
it will equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to
excel in a taught master degree at University of Hertfordshire
Business School.
The postgraduate pathway is designed for
students from a variety of backgrounds who:
• come from an academic background
different to that of the UK
• require additional English language training
• are looking to fine tune skills already
gained during undergraduate studies,
employment or both
• have been away from studies for a period of time
• are transferring to a new area of study
Intakes
The pathway will prepare you for future
postgraduate studies by giving you
confidence and expertise in areas relevant to your taught master degree. You will:
• develop a fundamental understanding of the basic principles relevant to your
chosen degree
• learn numerical techniques, research
methodologies and presentation and
communication skills
• gain transferable skills that will help you in your academic studies and future career and enable you to make
informed decisions
• achieve the necessary level of language
competence for your chosen field of study
Pathways
Duration
Structure
Assessment
Pre-Masters
(Stage 1)
One semester
October and June
Four taught modules will be delivered in six-week
blocks, with English language skills integrated
and developed within the taught modules. These modules will prepare you for your masters
degree, as well as focusing on the core
academic skills required for postgraduate study.
Assessment for most modules is continuous, and
includes tests, assignments
and presentations.
Masters
(Stage 2)
One year
September and January
(depending on your
chosen degree)
During this stage you will build on what you
have learnt during the Pre-Masters stage. You will also increase your professional
understanding of your area of study. A coursework masters degree usually consists
of a series of specialist modules in structured
class, seminar or tutorial formats, with a final
major project or dissertation component. A research thesis component may also be
included, but this will be much shorter than
what is required for a research masters degree.
Modules will be assessed
through examinations,
assignments, essays or seminar
performance. Assessment may
also include individual and group
projects and presentations. For most masters degrees,
preparing and submitting a
major project or dissertation will form a large part of the
assessment and final grade.

Each year through the Navitas academic
merit scholarship programme, 162 scholarships
are awarded worldwide to students
currently studying in our university
pathway colleges and managed campuses.
Navitas bursaries and scholarships
Navitas family bursaries
Navitas offers financial support in the form
of family bursaries. A bursary applies where
two or more students from the same family
study with a Navitas member institution.*
The first family member can be studying
with a Navitas member institution at the
same time as other family members, or
they may have previously studied with any
Navitas member institution. The bursary
is granted to the second and subsequent
family members who study with a Navitas
member institution. For the purpose of
this bursary, a family member is defined
as a husband, wife, brother, sister, mother,
father, son, daughter or stepchild.
The bursary is equivalent to 10 percent
of tuition fee for the first attempt at units
or courses in the programme of study
(ie a certificate, diploma, University
Transfer Programme (UTP), University
Pathway Programme, bachelor’s degree,
pre-master’s programme, postgraduate
qualifying programme or master’s degree)†
with a Navitas member institution (excluding
the Mixed English option).‡ This amount
is credited to the eligible student’s tuition
fee account each academic term, with the
amount being relevant to the number of
units undertaken in that term. The bursary
applies to the first program of study only
undertaken at a Navitas member institution
and does not apply to additional units or
repeat units that may also be undertaken.
A completed application must be submitted
to the Navitas institution where the second
family member is studying, together with
supporting documents such as a birth
certificate or family card.^ Application
forms can be obtained from the Navitas
institution where the student has enrolled.
* The Navitas family bursary applies to students
studying at ACN, Curtin College, Curtin Sydney,
Curtin Singapore, CRIC, EIBT, EIC, Eynesbury, FIC,
HIC, ICM, ICP, ICRGU, ICWS, La Trobe Melbourne,
LIBT, Macquarie City Campus, MIBT, MIBT
Indonesia, PDIC, PIBT, QIBT, SAIBT, SIBT, Navitas
at UMass Boston, Navitas at UMass Dartmouth,
Navitas at UMass Lowell, Navitas at WKU and
Navitas at UNH only.
†
Certificate programmes may also be known or
registered a Foundation Studies or University
Transfer Programme Stage I. Diploma programmes
may also be known or registered as Undergraduate
Pathway, University Transfer Programme Stage II or
University Pathway Programme.
‡
The Navitas bursary is not applicable to any
English language programme or any component of
an English language programme offered by a
Navitas member institution.
The supporting documentation that is required
will depend on the country where the student
is enrolled.

Navitas academic
merit scholarships
Navitas is committed to helping students
achieve their career goals by offering

students with the highest GPA in four or
more subjects or courses will each receive
a scholarship.
The scholarships cover:

five academic subjects or courses) for:

tuition for the second term of enrolment
only or the final semester of study in
an undergraduate or postgraduate
programme. Students must be enrolled
as a full time student to qualify for
the scholarships.
The scholarship panel from each Navitas
member institution will announce the
recipients of the Navitas academic merit
scholarships upon the completion of each
term and the release of the results. The
recipients will be notified by mail and the
successful students posted on the college
website by consent. Students are not
required to apply for the scholarship, as it is
awarded based on academic performance
and all students are eligible.

Accommodation
If you hope to live on campus, HIC offers places
in University of Hertfordshire’s halls of residence
for those wishing to live on campus. These are
low-rise, modern buildings on both the College
Lane and De Havilland campuses.
Alternatively, HIC can help to arrange
off-campus accommodation for you through its preferred service providers. This accommodation consists of modern
apartments and townhouses, ideally located within a short walking distance of either campus. On-campus accommodation:
single rooms in halls of residence
These rooms are usually only available for
stays of one semester (16 weeks). Availability
is limited, so be sure to apply early. In this
accommodation you will have your own room containing a single bed, desk, cupboard
and washstand. Students may either share
bathroom facilities or have their own en-suite
facilities. All halls of residence have a large
shared self-catering kitchen and free
broadband internet access.
If you would like to continue staying in halls of
residence for longer than one semester, please
be aware that availability is subject to demand.
Many students find that one semester living in halls of residence is long enough to make
friends and adjust to local life, and they would
like to experience life off campus.
Off-campus accommodation:
accommodation near
the university
HIC provides a referral service to a preferred
accommodation provider for all students
(new and continuing) who would like to live off campus. The service ensures that
HIC students are able to find modern,

new residential development next to the De
Havilland campus. The service involves
support and assistance from the property
manager, who is available 24 hours a day in
case of emergencies. The property manager
is also responsible for maintenance, repair
work and housing inspections.
