EDITORIAL
Verehrte Mitglieder unserer Gesellschaft
Wir beginnen dieses Jahr wieder gemeinsam als Christkatholiken und
Anglikaner – am Samstag, dem 26. Januar in Bern, mit unserer 12.
ordentlichen Mitgliederversammlung. Die Willibrord-News kann dank der
Arbeit meiner Vorstandskollegen und -kolleginnen Hector, Adèle und
Ulrike pünktlich zu dieser Vollversammlung erscheinen. Alle nicht
anwesenden Mitglieder erhalten sie nach diesem Tag per Post.
Mit dem Besuch der anglikanischen Schwestern aus Tansania in der
Schweiz blicken wir auf ein interessantes Ereignis voraus, das wir in
Zusammenarbeit mit dem Christkatholischen Hilfswerk Partner Sein
organisieren. Näheres hierzu finden Sie auf der Seite 4. Hierzu passt gut
das eindringliche Grusswort des alt-katholischen Bischof Dirk Jan
(genannt: Dick) Schoon von Haarlem (NL), das er an der 15.
Versammlung des Anglican Consultative Council (ACC) in Aotearoa,
Auckland (New Zealand) gehalten hat (Seite 7).
Auf Seiten davor finden Sie Informationen zum Leben des heiligen
Willibrord, verbunden mit einer Anregung, seinen Tag in Ihrer eigenen
Region zusammen mit der nächstliegenden anglikanischen bzw.
christkatholischen Gemeinde zu feiern (Seite 5). Auch stellt sich unser
neues Vorstandsmitglied, Diakonin Ulrike Henkenmeier, auf Seite 6 kurz
selber vor.
Schliesslich habe ich aus der im Dezember erschienenen deutschen
Zeitung „Willibrord News 2012“ einige Informationen für Sie
zusammengestellt (Seite 9) und einen kleinen Bericht über unseren
letzten Willibrord-Tag angefertigt (Seite 10). Die Fotos stammen von
Hector Davie.
Nun wünsche ich Ihnen viel Freude bei der Lektüre und uns allen ein

An Ecumenical Visit
The Community of St Mary of Nazareth and Calvary
(Chama cha Mariamu Mtakatifu, CMM), is a community
of Anglican nuns in Tanzania, founded in 1946. The
community has eleven houses in Tanzania, and one in
Zambia.
The sisters run Montessori schools, teach in government primary
schools, offer personal development classes for women and girls, work
as nurses, serve the needy, visit the sick and prisoners, and help in the
running of churches and parishes.
At the beginning of March, two CMM sisters will be coming to
Switzerland. The Willibrord Society, in collaboration with Partner Sein, is
very pleased to be able to support this event and contribute towards the
expenses of the visit.
The sisters will be arriving in Zurich on 2 March, and Robert Amstutz, the
Anglican representative to Partner Sein will bring them to Berne, where
they will meet Christoph Schuler and attend the main Sunday Eucharist
the following day. This will give them a chance to meet the congregation
at the Petrus- und Pauluskirche.
The same day, Adèle Kelham will welcome them to Lausanne, where
they will attend an ecumenical Evening Prayer in the protestant
cathedral. On the Monday, Adèle will introduce them to the protestant
Hospital Sisters of St Loup and to the sisters at the Community of
Grandchamp.
They will pass the rest of the week with our committee member Ulrike
Henkenmeier in Zurich, and will also meet the board of Partner Sein, and
have a chance to experience the Lenten Rosenaktion on the 9th. On the
Sunday, they will be attending the service to celebrate 20 years of cooperation between the three aid agencies (Fastenopfer, Brot für Alle and
Partner Sein) at the Augustinerkirche in Zurich, before moving on to
England for a further week's visit.
We hope that as many Willibrord members as possible can attend one of
these events – particularly the services in Berne, Lausanne and Zurich,
and make our visitors welcome.

The Feast Day of St Willibrord
St Willibrord is remembered on 7th November, the day in 739 when he
died. Willibrord was born in Northumbria around 658 and became known
as the “Apostle to the Frisians”.
Having grown up in a farming area, the word ‘Friesian’ immediately
makes me think of a breed of black and white cattle, or possibly sheep
with funny stringy tails and bald heads. As there is clearly much more to
be learnt, I checked on the internet and found not only a great deal of
geographical information, but also a list a famous people from Frisia. The
only one I’d heard of was Mata Hari! This is simply by way of a warning:
these notes do not come from the pen/keyboard of a specialist.
Here are some other things that my web-search revealed. Willibrord was
sent as a very young child to the Abbey of Ripon where he was educated
under St Wilfrid (or Wilfrith). He later spent some years in Ireland at the
Abbey of Rathmelsigi (or Rath Melsigi) a noted centre of learning. There
he studied under St Egbert (or Ecgberht) a fellow Northumbrian. It was
Egbert who encouraged him to go, with twelve companions, on a
missionary journey to the tribes of Frisia and northern Germany. He was
consecrated Bishop of the Frisians in Rome in 695. On his return to
Frisia he continued his missionary work and built many churches as well
as the Cathedral in Utrecht. He became the first Bishop of Utrecht.
In 698 he founded an abbey at Echternach in
Luxembourg, but returned to his work in Frisia until
716 when the pagan Radbod (or Redbad) became
ruler of the Frisians. A story has it that Radbod was
almost converted to Christianity, but at the last
minute refused to be baptized. He was told that he
would not find his ancestors in heaven, so decided
he would prefer hell among his family rather than
heaven among his enemies. In Frisia he burned
many churches and killed many of the missionaries.
Radbod died in 719 and Willibrord was soon back
again among the Frisians, though with frequent
visits to the abbey in Echternach. When Willibrord
died in 739, he was buried in Echternach.

note in the calendar!
Alcuin of York (or Ealhwine, nicknamed Albinus or Flaccus), ca. 735-804,
wrote a Life of St Willibrord, describing him as venerable, gracious and
full of joy.
Nothing written by Willibrord has ever been found apart from a marginal
note in the calendar of Echternach, apparently giving some chronological

data. Sensible fellow! I would no doubt be better sticking to marginal
notes in calendars.
So speaking of calendars, this year 7th November falls on a Thursday.
The Society of St Willibrord wondered whether those of our Old Catholic
and Anglican churches and chaplaincies that anyway have a service on
Thursdays would be prepared to invite one another to join their worship.
And if you hold your midweek service on a different day, don’t feel left
out. Next year St Willibrord falls on a Friday, in 2015 it will be Saturday,
so everyone will have an opportunity sooner or later to invite
Anglican/Old Catholic neighbours to join them.
And last year the Society of St Willibrord was delighted to learn that there
was an ordination in Bern on 7th November. Dr Simon Huber became a
deacon, and hopefully a member of the St Willibrord Society! Our
prayers and good wishes accompany him.
Ulrike Henkenmeier stellt sich vor
Seit letztem Jahr bin ich in den Vorstand der St. Willibrord Gesellschaft
gewählt. Gerne nutze ich die Gelegenheit, um mich kurz vorzustellen.
Mein Name ist Ulrike Henkenmeier, ich bin Diakonin und arbeite als
Vikarin für die Gesamtkirchgemeinde Zürich. Vor zwanzig Jahren bin ich
in die Schweiz gekommen und habe dieses Land schätzen und lieben
gelernt. Noch älter sind meine Beziehungen zur englischsprachigen
Welt, die ich in all den Jahren durch private Freundschaften und
Kontakte im interreligiösen Dialog vertiefen konnte. Für unser Bistum bin
ich zusammen mit Sarah Böhm christkatholische Representative im
Anglican Chapter und in der Anglican Archdeaconry Synod. Ich freue
mich über diese Aufgaben und über die zahlreichen Kontakte, die sich
daraus ergeben.
Since last year I have been a member of the board of the St. Willibrord
Society. I am happy to take this opportunity to briefly introduce myself.
My name is Ulrike Henkenmeier, I'm a deacon and I work as a curate in
the Old Catholic parish of Zürich. Twenty years ago I moved from
Germany to Switzerland, and I appreciate and love this country. Even
older are my contacts to the English speaking world, which I have been
able to deepen over many years through private friendships and contacts
in interreligious dialogue. Sarah Böhm and I represent our Old Catholic
diocese in the Anglican Chapter and the Anglican Archdeaconry Synod. I
am happy to take on these tasks and I enjoy the many contacts which
result from them.

Greeting by the Old-Catholic and Anglican Bishops
in Europe to their churches
on the occasion of the Feast of St. Willibrord

Brothers and sisters in Christ,
The cooperation of Old-Catholics and Anglicans in Europe refers to
common saints of long ago. Prompted by their spirituality, Anglo-Saxon
monks left the safety of their convent behind to spread the good news of
the gospel in foreign territories. Among them, Saint Willibrord has an
important place for us. At the end of the seventh century, supported by
his companions, his work led to the foundation of the Church of Utrecht,
which he served as its first bishop. Appropriately, St. Willibrord has
become the patron saint of the Old-Catholic - Anglican cooperation.
We live about fourteen centuries later, and although times have changed,
the command to the churches to preach the gospel is still relevant.
Christianity has profoundly influenced European countries. Besides the
impact on education and science, on art and culture, care for the
neighbour stands out as a basic characteristic of a Christian society. In
the work of the church, this is embodied by those who care for those
whom the Bible identifies as ‘widows, orphans and strangers’, those who
have difficulty shaping their existence without help. While in the twentieth
century in most European countries that concern was taken care of by
the secular state, it is now under pressure because of the need for cuts.
The increased mobility and globalization of society brings us into contact
with people who seek refuge in our countries in the hope of a better life.
Our churches cannot escape the questions these developments bring
with them. Any Old- Catholic or Anglican Christian hears the call of Jesus
that ‘all you have done to these little ones, you have done for me’, but
also his admonition: ‘all you failed to do to one of these little ones, you
failed to do to me.’ (cf. Mt 25, 31-46). The works of mercy that Jesus
holds before us are not intended to make us feel better, or to haughtily
condone our own wealth out of wrongly conceived ideas of charity. They
are intended to shape the kingdom of heaven, in the expectation that it
will be completed by God's grace. It is God who is giving us the strength
and the confidence, that not only our own lives can take refuge in God’s
goodness, but that all people are called to live their lives in his salvific
light.
We urge you, brothers and sisters, that your faith may be a living faith,
rich in good works. Then we follow in the footsteps of St. Willibrord, as

we gratefully remember him before God as the messenger bringing good
tidings, who has brought us salvation (cf. Isa. 52, 7).
And let us pray for the growth of the one church of Jesus Christ, with the
words of the collect of his feast, as we pray it in the Netherlands:
Lord our God,
you have planted the faith in our region
by Willibrord and his companions,
and you yourself have nurtured it to maturity.
Fill us with gratitude to them
and to all who show the courage and the insight
to proclaim in our time the gospel
of our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit
lives and reigns
now and forever. Amen.

SSW Day at Wegenstetten

SSW-Day 2012 in Wegenstetten und Hellikon
Am 29 September 2012 traf sich unsere Gesellschaft zu ihrem
letztjährigen Jahrestreffen (Willbrord-Tag) in Hellikon im Fricktal (Kanton
Aargau). Nach dem Festgottesdienst in Hellikon (Michael und alle Engel,
das alte Patrozinium der Kirchgemeinde) waren wir zum Kirchenkaffee
eingeladen. Anschliessend assen wir gemeinsam im Restaurant Adler
Wegenstetten, einem traditionellen Lokal, das von einem Gemeindeglied
geführt wird, zu Mittag.
Der für den Nachmittag vorgesehene Vortrag von Canon John Newsome
über die Ignatianischen Exerzitien musste leider krankheitshalber
ausfallen. (Er konnte inzwischen auf die Vollversammlung im Januar
2013 verschoben werden.) So verlängerten wir unseren Heimweg und
machten auf dem Friedhof und in der Kirche Wegenstetten Halt. Diese
Kirche war vor dem Bau der Christuskirche Hellikon (im Jahre 1946)
christkatholische Pfarrkirche gewesen. Der römisch-katholische Pfarrer
Alexander Pasalidi zeigte uns die Kirche mit ihrem schönen Michaelsbild
über dem Hochaltar. Auf dem Friedhof zeigte uns Pfarrer Teun Wijker, als
scheidender Pfarrer der Christkatholsichen Kirchgemeinde
Wegenstetten-Hellikon-Zuzgen, ein Denkmal, das aus der Zeit des
Kulturkampfes stammt.
1875 hatte sich 10 Jahre zuvor eingeweihten Schulhaus Hellikon eine
Katastrophe ereignet. Am Abend des 25. Dezembers, unmittelbar vor
Beginn einer vom Gemeinnützigen Frauenverein und der Lehrerschaft
organisierten Christbaumfeier, war unter dem Gewicht der wartenden
Kinder und Erwachsenen der oberste Boden des Treppenhauses in die
Tiefe gestürzt. Insgesamt hatte die Katastrophe 76 Menschenleben
gefordert. Das Denkmal auf dem Wegenstetter Friedhof mit den Namen
der Opfer wurde vor zwei Jahren renoviert und nun in ökumensicher
Freundschaft gemeinsam von beiden Pfarrern Wijker und Pasalidi
eingesegnet. Eine solche Einsegnung war seinerzeit wegen der
ökumenischen Streitigkeiten unterblieben.
Nach einigen Planungen für 2013 schlossen wir dann um 16 Uhr mit
Kaffee, Tee und dem Reisesegen den Willibrord-Tag ab.

Nachrichten aus Deutschland
In der deutschen Willibrord-Gesellschaft gibt es seit etwa einem Jahr einen
neuen Vorsitzenden. Sein Name ist Reiner Knudsen. Im Folgenden stellt er
sich selber vor; dies ist der Beginn einer Serie von Blicken über die
Landesgrenze der Schweiz.
„Wer bin ich? Viele von Ihnen kennen mich möglicherweise noch nicht.
Erlauben Sie, dass ich mich Ihnen kurz vorstelle. Ich wurde vor etwas
mehr als 45 Jahren in Wilhelmshaven an der Nordsee geboren – ich bin
also ein echter Friese. In meiner Heimatstadt habe ich mein Abitur
gemacht, einen Großteil meiner vier Jahre bei der Bundesmarine
absolviert und schließlich auch studiert. Beruflich bin ich stets viel
unterwegs gewesen. Als Unternehmensberater ist man halt immer dort,
wo der jeweilige Kunde einen braucht. Dem Norden bin ich aber stets
verbunden gewesen und habe schließlich sieben Jahre auf der
wundervollen Insel Nordstrand gelebt. Dort habe ich die Alt-Katholiken
entdeckt, mich lange im Kirchenvorstand engagiert und wurde schließlich
zum Synodenabgeordneten gewählt. Schon auf meiner ersten Synode
wurde ich in die Synodalvertretung berufen, deren zweiter Vorsitzender
ich seit 2010 bin.
Die Liebe hat mich 2009 nach Bonn geführt, als ich hier meine Frau
Jenny kennen und lieben gelernt habe. Jenny ist sehr engagiertes
Mitglied der anglikanischen Gemeinde Bonn und Köln. Im August diesen
Jahres haben wir unsere kirchliche Trauung in der Namen-Jesu-Kirche in
Bonn gefeiert – in einem wunderschönen alt-katholisch/anglikanischen
Gottesdienst. Man kann also sagen, dass Jenny und ich eine WillibrordEhe führen. Ein großer Teil unseres Freundes- und Bekanntenkreises
kommt inzwischen aus dem Umfeld unserer Gemeinden. Es ist für uns
ein schönes Gefühl (und auch eine solche Aufgabe), als verbindendes
Element zwischen der alt-katholischen und der anglikanischen Kirche in
Bonn zu wirken. (…)
Demnächst werden wir uns in einer Mitgliederversammlung treffen. Die
Veranstaltung ist geplant für den 08. Juni 2013. An diesem Tag sind wir
von der alt-katholischen Gemeinde in Stuttgart eingeladen, unsere
Versammlung in dem Gemeinderaum der Gemeinde abzuhalten. (…)Die
Mitgliederversammlung soll vor allem dazu dienen, den zukünftigen Weg
der Gesellschaft zu skizzieren und gemeinsam zu definieren, auf welche
Art wir in der Zukunft wirken wollen. (…)”
