For the 2015-16 school year, the additional PA Day for the Peel District School Board will be April 11, 2016. All Peel board elementary and secondary schools will be closed to students on this day. The next day, April 12, will remain a Day # 4 for students. This month at Goldcrest we will be preparing for the production “The Return to OZ”, A musical for children. Grade 4 and 5 auditions will be held in the beginning of February. Grade 1, 2, and 3 auditions for the chorus will be held after the lead rolls are cast. Mr. Locke, Ms. Wilkinson, Mrs. Proeller, Mrs. Archdekin- Bonney, and Mrs. Oja will be heading up our production crew. We have reduced the number of newsletters sent out from 285/month to 124!! That’s a reduction of over one half!! At approximately 6 pages per newsletter, that’s a saving of almost 1000 sheets of paper per month, or 10,000 sheets per school year!! This is due to families accepting the newsletter by email instead of a hard paper copy. Mrs. Brown’s Kindergarten class has everyone in the class receiving the newsletter by email! Are other classes up to the challenge? Congratulations Goldcrest on saving paper and saving trees!! We are on our way to another GOLD ECO-year at GoldcrestP.S.! Big Crunch Tuesdays: Every Tuesday at morning break is the “Big Crunch”, when we count down to crunch together on our healthy fruit and vegetables. Please send healthy snacks for your children to promote good health, strong teeth, and optimal brain and body functioning. Eating fruits and vegetables also cuts down on garbage from wrappings and packaging of store-bought snacks. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, ... CRUUUNCH!!! Waste-free Wednesdays: Every Wednesday is Waste-free at Goldcrest P.S. when we ask families and students to bring their own lunches, snacks, and drinks in reusable containers and bottles. If they do have garbage, we request students to take it home to help cut down on school waste sent to landfills at least 1 day each week. This is one way we help the environment. Power Hour Thursdays: Every Thursday at lunchtime is Power Hour at Goldcrest, when as many lights as possible are turned off. Hall lights, classroom lights, and classroom monitors not in use are turned off. We want to save energy at Goldcrest and raise awareness about ways to save power at school, at home, and in our city. Turn off lights, equipment and when not in use at home and Help Save Energy! Walk to School! Save your gas and keep our air cleaner! For those who are not bus students – please consider having your child WALK to school at least one day a week. Coming soon, we will be introducing the Golden Shoe Award! This will be awarded to classes weekly for those who walk to school. Not only does this save gas and keep the air cleaner, but the exercise improves our health! Congratulations Goldcrest Walkers!! Walk whenever you can! National Sweater Day is February 4th! WWF (World Wildlife Foundation) - Canada asks Canadians to turn down your heat at home, at school and at work and turn up your sweater for energy conservation! This campaign is to help raise awareness about renewable energy and change behaviour around energy consumption in Canada. If all Canadians lowered their thermostats by just two degrees Celsius, it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about four megatons – the same as taking almost 700,000 cars off the road. Insπre. Extended-day program for kindergarten students Families have the option of enrolling their child in before and after-school programs developed by the Ministry of Education to complement the kindergarten program. These programs are run by qualified, experienced staff from our childcare partners. At registration, we will ask families to tell us whether they are interested in the extended-day programs. The programs can only run if there is enough interest among families. Registering students with special needs Students who have a demonstrated developmental disability, physical disability, hearing or vision loss or ASD/PDD diagnosis may require specialized support in the school setting. Register today for Adult ESL or LINC classes Do you know an adult that is interested in improving their English language skills for work, study or daily life? Through the Continuing & Adult Education department, the Peel District School Board offers a wide variety of English language classes that help parents experience success in Canadian English in both listening/speaking and reading/writing. Courses are designed for a range of basic, intermediate and advanced English (Levels 1 to 7) as well as the more experienced learner needing to prepare for an IELTS exam. Winter courses begin February 8, 2016. All learners that complete a session will earn a certificate of learning from the Peel District School Board.
