The Lübeck healthcare industry –
a leading position in North Germany
Die Gesundheit ist unser höchstes Gut. Sie zu schützen, ist eine
der zentralen Aufgaben unserer Zeit. Eine Aufgabe, die in der
Region Lübeck seit über 100 Jahren einen festen Platz hat – nicht
nur in dem besonders gesunden Klima, sondern vor allem innerhalb des stärksten Branchen-Clusters am Standort. Dank der Unternehmen, Institutionen und Dienstleister, die sich hier gemeinsam für Gesundheitsdienstleistungen stark machen.
Gesundheitswirtschaft in Lübeck, das heißt ganz konkret: Medizintechnik, Biotechnik und unzählige Gesundheitsdienstleistungen. In diesen drei Bereichen erwirtschaften die Lübecker Unternehmen mit 16.000 Beschäftigten weit über 1,1 Mrd. Euro im Jahr
– Tendenz steigend. Damit nimmt die Hansestadt die Spitzenstellung in der norddeutschen Gesundheitswirtschaft ein.
Allein in der Medizintechnik-Branche stehen hier unterschiedliche Unternehmenstypen — vom Weltkonzern über den Mittelständler bis hin zu wachsenden Firmen — verschiedenen regionalen, nationalen und globalen Abnehmerstrukturen gegenüber
– von Patienten und Ärzten über Kliniken und Gesundheitszentren bis hin zu Einkaufs- und Managed-Care-Organisationen. Und
neben den Dienstleistungsanbietern, dem Rückgrad der Medizintechnik und Biotechnologie mit vielen selbstständigen und aufgrund der demografischen Entwicklung rasch aufstrebenden Unternehmen, wächst in Lübeck auch die Biotechnologie-Branche
unaufhaltsam. Denn hier werden vor allem diagnostische Produkte
und Herstellungsverfahren erforscht, entwickelt und produziert.
Anhand des Profils der vor Ort befindlichen Unternehmen werden die Entwicklungsgesellschaft Ostholstein und die Wirtschaftsförderung Lübeck darüber hinaus auch weiterhin konkrete Projekte entwickeln, um zusätzliche Impulse am Standort zu
geben.

Good health is our most valuable asset. Protecting it is one of the
primary missions of modern times. The Lübeck region has been
playing a prominent part in this field for more than 100 years – and
not just because of its exceptionally healthy climate, but mainly
from within the location’s strongest industry cluster. Thanks to the
collective commitment to healthcare of local companies, institutions and service providers.
In concrete terms, the Lübeck healthcare industry is comprised of
medical technology, biotechnology and countless health services.
Well over 1.1 billion euros are generated each year by Lübeck companies employing 16,000 people in these three branches of the
healthcare industry – and the trend is upward. This makes the Hanseatic City of Lübeck the number one location in North Germany’s
healthcare industry.
In medical technology alone, a wide variety of global companies,
established medium-sized companies and growing companies are
servicing equally diverse regional, national and global customer
bases – ranging from patients and doctors through hospitals and
health centers to purchasing and managed care organizations.
Along with the service providers that comprise the backbone of
medical technology and biotechnology – with many independent
and, due to current demographic changes, rapidly expanding companies – the Lübeck biotechnology industry as a whole continues
to grow inexorably. One reason for this is the location’s strength in
the research, development and production of diagnostic products
and manufacturing processes.
Moreover, with consideration given to the profile of local companies, the Ostholstein and the Lübeck Business Development Corporations will continue to develop specific and worthwhile projects in
order to give the location even greater impetus.
Examples of existing projects include substantial initiatives such
as the medical technology association Medizintechnikverbund and
medRegio Lübeck Kompetenzzentrum eHealth (www.medregio.de),
which is involved in the development of services and products for
the healthcare industry at the interface between IT and medical
technology. Both are platforms for the interdisciplinary exchange of
ideas and research, which, in turn, leads to a whole raft of productive
