Was ist nötig, damit Neues entstehen und sich entfalten kann? Das C im Titel des Ars Electronica Festival 2014 steht für Change, für Confidence und für
Craving. Also für Vertrauen ins Leben und für die Sehnsucht nach Veränderung, die angesichts der zahlreichen globalen Krisen stärker ist denn je zuvor.
Das Interesse des Festivals für Kunst, Technologie und Gesellschaft gilt dieses Jahr jedoch weniger der schon so oft diskutierten Frage, wie die Zukunft
wohl aussehen wird. Viel stärker steht die Frage im Vordergrund, wie die Menschheit in eine lebenswerte Zukunft gelangen kann – und vor allem, welche
PionierInnen die Wege dorthin erkunden und für eine breite Öffentlichkeit gangbar machen könnten.

Die belgische Kunstakademie ARTS² bildet in
Mons, der Kulturhauptstadt Europas 2015, junge
KünstlerInnen in den visuellen Künsten, Musik
und Theater aus. Die multidisziplinäre Struktur
der Hochschule begünstigt gemeinsame und
studienübergreifende Projekte. ARTS² is an art
academy in the city of Mons, Belgium, the 2015
European Capital of Culture. The school provides
training in the visual arts, music and theater. Its
multidisciplinary structure makes it the ideal place for
collaborative projects by students in different majors.

Zehn beispielhafte Arbeiten sind beim Ars Electronica
Festival 2014 zu sehen. The featured artists at the
2014 Ars Electronica Festival are a duo from the
Republic of Korea. Since 2012, computer specialist
Shin Seung Back and artist Kim Yong Hun have
been working together under the dual portmanteau
Shinseungback Kimyonghun. 10 works representative
of their oeuvre are on display at Ars Electronica.

Mit einem kleinen Radioempfänger und Kopfhörern
ausgestattet, spannen Regenschirme einen intimen
Hörraum auf. Ganz im Sinne des Festivalthemas und
des Ö1-Herbstschwerpunkts ‚Orte im Wandel‘ gibt es
darin akustische Juwelen aus dem Ö1-Archiv zu hören.
Once unfurled, umbrellas deliver crystal-clear reception
within a rather intimate range. Then it’s time to lend
an ear to acoustic jewels from the Ö1 Archive, a playlist
selected in accordance with the Festival theme and
Ö1’s autumn “Places in Transition” series.

WORLD is Ars Electronica’s festival especially for kids
and young people. It made its very successful debut
last year. The colorful festival village surrounding
the Ars Electronica Center is a playground for ideas,
solutions to problems, concepts and experiments.

der Future Innovators Summit von Ars Electronica
und Hakuhodo nach, der das traditionelle
Themensymposium des Festivals auf den Kopf
stellt und neu erfindet. Man könnte auch sagen:
verwandelt. What does it take to change? This
question will occupy the focal point at the Future
Innovators Summit staged jointly by Ars Electronica
and Hakuhodo. This conclave is the result of a
radical makeover of the Festival’s traditional theme
symposium, and thus clearly a case of intentionally
induced change!

Geschäften und Schaufenstern der Arkade und
den umliegenden Shops, laden Kunstwerke und
Videoarbeiten ein, sich Gedanken um das Thema des
diesjährigen Festivals zu machen. So wie an anderen
Schauplätzen der FestivalCity sind es die zunächst
unscheinbaren Arbeiten, die hier erst auf den zweiten
Blick in den Vordergrund treten. In the middle of the
FestivalCity, more specifically in the shops and display
windows of the Arkade and the surrounding stores, art
and video works invite you to think about the theme
of this year’s festival. Just as on other places of the
FestivalCity the artworks step forward at second glance.

for the craving for renewal that, in light of serial global crises, is stronger than ever. But at this year’s conclave at the nexus of art, technology and society, the
focus won’t be on a question that’s been discussed so often over the years: What will the future be like? Instead, we’ll be concentrating on how humankind
can arrive at an eminently livable future, and, above all, which pioneers are already blazing trails in that direction and can make it accessible to all.

Nun ist es zehn Jahre her, seit Christa Sommerer (AT)
und Laurent Mignonneau (FR) den Studiengang
Interface Cultures an der Kunstuniversität Linz
geschaffen haben. Interaktive Kunst und innovatives
Interface Design an der Nahstelle von Kunst, Design
und Forschung stehen im Mittelpunkt der Ausbildung
in Theorie und Praxis. It’s been 10 years since Christa
Sommerer (AT) and Laurent Mignonneau (FR)
established the Interface Cultures program at Linz
Art University. Interactive art and innovative interface
design at the nexus of art, design and research are the
core elements of this course of study in theory and
practice.

Projekt Genesis – der englische Ausstellungstitel lautet Yours Synthetically – ist die erste
Schau, die künstlerische Arbeiten als Beiträge zu
dieser Diskussion versammelt. Sie vermittelt, wie
KünstlerInnen technologische Errungenschaften
nutzen, um die Natur zu untersuchen und zu
verstehen – und um dabei häufig eine kritische
Perspektive einzunehmen. Project Genesis —
Synthetic Biology — Life from the Lab is the first
show to bring together artistic works as a means of
stimulating a discussion of these issues. They get
across how artists use technological achievements
to investigate and understand nature, and often to
assume a critical perspective in doing so.
