Holocaust and Judaica
CATALOGUE THIRTY-FIVE
Fall/Winter 2010
In 1939, the luxury liner St. Louis sailed from Hamburg. Aboard were 936 Jewish
refugees, they were never allowed to enter Cuba or the U.S. They were finally admitted
into Holland, Belgium and England. As the rest of the world looked on with apathy, they
were deported to concentration camps, where most of them perished.

And I Still See Their Faces: Images of Polish Jews. The book is based on an
exhibition. Many of the photographs in this book were donated by non-jews
currently living in Poland, and jews of Polish origin from all over the world. Jewish
life in Poland from the end of the last century to the Holocaust, with all its intimacies,
dignity, pride and then horror, is arrayed in an exhibit of faded photographs culled
from family albums, shoe boxes, and attics. At home and abroad, the photos depict
assimilated, observant, modern and traditional jews, rich and poor, all creating an
exuberant and forceful world now lost. Some sent in photos in the hope that a face
would be recognized and that perhaps a friend had survived the roundups, the
executions, the death camps. A unique photo collection of great documental,
historical and artistic value. The pictures published for the first time are
accompanied by fragments of authentic letters or conversations showing their
origin. One photograph was carried by a daughter of her mother through two
selections by Dr. Mengele at Auschwitz, once she held it in her mouth, the second
3
time she taped it with a band-aid to the bottom of her foot, she was 14 years old at
the time. She later found out that her parents, sister and brother were shot to death
attempting to avoid deportation to Auschwitz. Also includes never before seen
photos of the Lodz Ghetto and round ups for deportation. The book is magnificent,
unique, moving, and most important. Shalom Foundation, Warsaw. 1996. folio, text

GUNTER DEMNIG
WINNER OF THE OBERMAYER HISTORY AWARD
Gunter Demnig first catches your eye, then your thoughts. Although the
Cologne artist’s stolpersteine (stumbling blocks) are neatly paved into the sidewalk, they
force passers-by to stop and read them. “Here lived” begins the inscriptions engraved in
brass on the concrete squares measuring about four inches—on each one, just the
name, date, and place of death of an individual killed by the Nazis. But this basic
information about the fate of one person among 6 million has the power to create
questions in the minds of pedestrians.
“The stumbling blocks become reminders and voices; they call out. Demnig has
placed stumbling blocks in about 60 cities, towns, and villages throughout Germany;
there are more than 4,500 so far. What he began in 1993 is becoming the largest
monument to the victims of National Socialism; it is a constantly expanding mosaic. “It is
for all the victims,” says Demnig, “Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, and resistance fighters.”
The monument is being built with the help of numerous local initiatives. Not
only do relatives and descendants of victims contact Demnig; schools, associations, and
other groups apply for official permission to add blocks, as well. At Max-Planck
Elementary School in Berlin, a class started one of many projects inspired by Deming.
To prepare for the installation of the stumbling blocks, students researched archives,
talked with historians, and interviewed survivors and their families to learn about that
time.
Sometimes, however, Demnig’s idea provokes oppostion. Cities such as
Munich and Leipzig don’t allow the stones, and there are homeowners who try to avoid
them in front of their doors. But that can’t stop the project. “It has become an avalache:
Every day we have requests for stumbling blocks”, says Uta Franke, Demnig’s partner
who has meanwhile taken over the project’s organization and documentation. “In many
cities, towns and even villages, just the idea to set a stone starts a new wave of
discussion and research about the Nazi past.”

FALLEN LEAVES
by Menashe Kadishman
BERLIN JEWISH MUSEUM
A powerful exhibition of over 10,000 open mouthed coarsly cut iron
plates in the ground. His display of the murdered Jews of Europe. One of the
most moving displays that I have seen. It took me a while to recover from this
painful recollection of the horror of the Holocaust. We must never forget.
