These US twins are actresses, producers, authors, publishers and businesswomen – all at the same time. Last year the two 15-year-olds were so successful that they made $500 million! 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 You know Mary-Kate and Ashley from the hit RTL2 TV series Full House, where they took turns playing one character, Michelle Tanner. Since making that series, they have built their own media empire. And US kids love them. Every day the twins get hundreds of e–mails from their fans. Mary-Kate and Ashley have their own lifestyle magazine for girls, called mary-kateandashley. But that's not all. They also have their own fashion line with clothing, jewellery and accessories. On their website you can check out and buy all their stuff. But you can also get entertainment tips, your horoscope and inspiring information for the "mind, body and soul". Now that's cool. But how did the Californian twins get started? When they were making Full House, MaryKate and Ashley were small children. But TV polls in the USA said they were as popular as the famous TV comedian Bill Cosby! So at the age of six they formed a production company with their manager, Robert Thorne. They started making CDs and videos. That made them the world's youngest producers. Then the girls started making movies and appearing on US soap operas. In 1998 they were given their own TV series called Two of A Kind. Last year they started their magazine, and got another TV series, called So Little Time. But what are these girls like when they're not working? Mary-Kate and Ashley live with their mom Jarnie, their younger sister Lizzie and their older brother Trent in Los Angeles. Their mom and dad Dave got divorced when the twins were nine but they see their father a lot. They say they lead normal teenage lives. During the day, they attend a private school in Los Angeles, where they are very well behaved. The girls' hobbies are shopping (and arguing about clothes!), going to the movies, 'N Sync, cheerleading and Tae Bo. Mary-Kate loves riding her two horses, CD and Star. Ashley enjoys dancing and tennis. Amazingly, the girls only get $10 a week pocket money. Friends of the twins say that they think alike, but MaryKate, who is two minutes older, says she and Ashley are "totally different". The Olsens say they are positive role models for young American girls: the twins are pretty, blonde and healthy-looking, they dress smartly but not sexily, and they have not a single body piercing. They have not even had their ears pierced. They are the most successful child stars in America, but they haven't let it go to their heads, and above all they don't just want to have fun. "We're able to help kids and lead them on the right track," Mary-Kate told one interviewer. The secret of the girls' success is their niceness and their attitude towards a clean life: "No sex, no drugs, no rock'n'roll," the girls say. Sounds like a clean way to a lot of money! adapted from: Spot on 05/2002, www.spoton.de Schriftliche Realschulabschlussprüfung 2003 im Fach Englisch − Prüfungsarbeit (Leseverstehenstest) AI S. 3 Comprehension 1.
