The honing machine model used is based on
various factors such as component dimensions, gear
geometry and desired production numbers. The
Fässier HMX family provides flexible solutions for
honing ofa multitude ofexternal and internal gears,
crankshafts, cluster gears on shafts and many more.
With the use of a variety of automated part loading
solutions, honing is one ofthe most economical and
fastest hard gear finishing processes.
In a typical application, an internally toothed honing stone
makes rolling contact with the work piece and is combined
with an oscillating movement of the honing stone. Cutting
forces are also generated in the radial as weil as axial direc
tion via a crossed-axes angle between the honing stone and
the work piece. Cutting speeds vary across the tooth flank and
thereby result in a high surface finish and compressive stresses
to the surface structure, which is best known for good running
properties, noise reduction and durability.

The necessary tools for external honing are composed of a
ceramic bonded abrasive the honing stone and a diamond
coated master and dressing wheel.

The long intervals between dressing in honing inheritably result
in very bw tooling costs. Combined with bw cycle times, high
productivity at a bw investment is ach ieved.

AND PROCESS RELIABILITY
Highly accurate Profile and Lead forms, as weil as pitch and run out
results, can be improved by 2 to 4 DIN classes depending on the
work piece. The high repeatability of Honing provides a highest
degree of process reliability.
MAXIMUM TRANSMISSION
SMOOTH N ESS
The honing process provides a fine finish with an also highly
diffused surface structure on the tooth surface. This is characterized
by many small pockets, which contain the lubrication oils and provide
additional dampening and bw noise emission. Furthermore, the
diffused machining marks provide an excellent surface quality
resulting in a smooth rolling contact of mating gear teeth.

DURABILITY
By process-related introduction of compressive residual surface
stresses, the wear resistance and durability ofthe tooth surfaces are
significantly increased.
NO THERMAL
STRESS
The bw cutting speeds of the honing process have no nega
tive thermal impact and no structural changes during processing.
Consequently, the risk of surface burns and annealing resulting in
possible gearbox failure is virtually eliminated.
FREEDOM IN
GEAR DESIGN
Lead modifications such as bias, anti-twist or tapers can be easily
produced when manufacturing the dressing tools. These correc
tions are reliably transmitted via the dressing gear and the honing
stone to the work piece.
