Resident Activities Update
August was cold and wet but that
didn’t stop us from having a full bus
every Thursday afternoon for our
bus trips. We started the month
with a trip out to Dolci Dora
Chocolate Warehouse, where
everyone stocked up on chocolates
and gifts at a very reasonable price.
The following week we beat the
weather forecast and it was a
lovely afternoon at Bobbin Head,
again the bus was full to the brim
and a great afternoon was had by
all who attended.
We then went to Trovatino Café at
Abbotsford and enjoyed a lovely
Italian coffee and a drive around
the bay and looked at all of the
beautiful houses and to finish our
month we finally got to Doyles at
Watsons Bay for a great Fish and
Chip lunch on the water. Again the
weather held out and the water
views were spectacular.
Next month we will be travelling off
to Bowral for the Tulip Festival, this
is always a very popular trip and
the flowers are beautiful in their
Spring Bloom, so if you’re up to a
big day out don’t forget to get your
name in the book early to reserve
your place on the bus.
During August we also had the
“Hale and Fun” discussion groups
that were a huge success with
some very different topics
discussed, hopefully we can do that
again later in the year with a
different set of topics.
Monthly Roundup
The end of August means that Spring is around the
corner and with that we should get some warmer
weather, so we can all start to shed some layers
but remembering that we could still have a cold
snap so keep a jacket handy.
Meg Marshall has moved into Apartment 50 and is
settling in well. Meta Simms continues in rehab
after being in hospital. We wish her a speedy
return. Sybil Monti returned following her
operation and Edith Allan had a short spell in
hospital.
Dawn Newstead and Bing Taylor have both moved
into a respite accommodation with the view of a
permanent place, we wish them well and will miss
them both.
We have also had a couple of changes to the staff,
unfortunately Sonja has had a personal loss and
will not be returning and Danielle will also be
missed on the front reception.
Kristy is recovering well from her accident and we
look forward to welcoming her back shortly, you
will also see Kerri from Vision around the village
doing sales work and we are expecting to appoint
a new overnight staff member shortly.
For A Laugh…
"Hospital Regulations"
Hospital rules state that patients checking
out must have a wheelchair.
One day a newly graduated nurse assistant
came into the room to find an elderly man
fully dressed. He was sitting on the bedside
chair, with a piece of packed luggage at his
side, all ready to go.
When he was shown the wheelchair, he was
adamant that he was fully capable of walking
himself to the parking lot.
But the assistant told him rules were rules,
so he relented and let her wheel him out.
In the elevator, the assistant asked the
elderly man if his wife was coming to meet
him.
“I don’t think so,” he replied. “It takes her a
while to change her clothes, so she’s
probably still upstairs in the bathroom taking
off her hospital gown and getting dressed.”
Interestingly we have a very international group of
staff, representing twelve different nationalities.
I shall be taking a holiday towards the end of the
month to visit Rome, Greece and the UK. I am
looking forward to it all. Fear not, you will be in
the capable hands of Jocelyn and Jackie while I am
away. Remember you are not old but vintage!!

Resident Profile Patricia Harrison
Patricia Harrison was born on November 28th 1929
in Adelaide. Her parents were Albert Hudson
Harrison, of Port Augusta, and Ida Dalton from
Yorkshire, UK. She was the second of three children,
older brother Franklin Hudson and younger brother
Robert Fredrick.
Patricia attended primary school at Henley Beach
South and high school at Star of the Sea Convent. She
studied music at the convent and dance at the Jean
Bedford School of Dance where she passed her exams
to become a member of London’s (UK) Royal
Academy of Dance in 1941.
After attending Business College she became private
secretary to the manager of Australian National
Airlines (Instruments Section) in North Adelaide.
Soon after, Patricia began a successful modelling
career when she was chosen for Christian Dior’s first
post WW2 high fashion presentation in Australia.
Modelling brought her to Sydney, where she also
pursued an acting and singing career. She joined
Peter Finch’s Mercury Mobile Theatre Company,
taking classical theatre to schools and factories all
around Sydney.
Patricia then won a role the Broadway musical
‘Oklahoma’. She met her future husband, William
Redd Knight, an American actor who played the role
of Will Parker. Patricia understudied the role of Ado
Annie and eventually took over the part when the
American actress became homesick and returned to
the USA. Patricia and Redd shared several
memorable scenes in the show. Patricia and Redd
married in 1950 and had three daughters, Suzanna,
Michelle, and Juliette. They travelled and worked
together in cabaret throughout Europe, settling in the
UK for several years before returning to Adelaide in
1963.
During this period she appeared on a number of
popular Australian TV shows, singing on ‘In
Melbourne Tonight’ with Graham Kennedy and
‘Showcase’ with Gordon Boyd; and acting in TV
dramas such as ‘Homicide’, ‘Matlock’ and
‘Division Four’. Following ‘Man of La Mancha’,
Patricia went on to perform cabaret in London,
Europe, and South Africa for many years.
In the 80s Patricia lived and worked in Hong
Kong, teaching English to foreign and Chinese
businessmen, as well as studying Cantonese and
many levels of Tai Chi. After living in Hong Kong
for several years she moved to Boston in the
United States and forged a successful real estate
career. In 2004 Patricia returned to Australia to
live in Potts Point where she always enjoyed her
fabulous view of the Sydney skyline, harbour
and Opera House. In 2012 she moved to Hunters
Hill Lodge.
Of Patricia’s well-travelled daughters, only
Suzanna now lives in Sydney - with Michelle in
Ireland and Juliette in New York. She also has
three grandchildren Kiernan, Asher and Ruby.
Kiernan, a singer/songwriter, lives and works in
Nashville, USA. Asher (an Old Boy of St Joseph’s
College, Hunters Hill) lives in Sydney and works
as a medical equipment specialist. Ruby lives in
New York City where she attends high school.
Researched and written
by Ruby Serafin
(Patricia’s granddaughter)
In the late 60s Patricia joined J.C. Williamson’s
production ‘Man of La Mancha’ - as Don Quixote’s
niece Antonia - touring with the company throughout
Australia and New Zealand. She also understudied
the demanding female lead Aldonza, a role which she
played to great acclaim for many performances.
