The contracts with local governments in Australia have a total volume of over EUR 264 million and comprise waste recovery, sorting and recycling. For Thiess, the recovery of natural resources from domestic residual waste has long been an important business area. It is well positioned in this segment in Australia and the new contracts will strengthen its position even further. Thiess will assume responsibility for waste management for the local government areas of Gosford und Wyong in New South Wales as from February 2008. The relevant contracts are for a period of ten years and are worth a total of EUR 133 million. In Queensland, Thiess has concluded collection and recycling agreements for green and bulk waste with the councils of Pine Rivers Shire (EUR 20 million) and Caloundra (EUR 21 million). The contracts have durations of five and seven years respectively. Just a few days previously, Thiess secured a fifth contract in the field of resource recovery when the Brisbane city council gave it responsibility for recycling services worth EUR 90 million over a period of seven years.
