The event was held prior to the start of the popular
Chicagoland Petroleum & Advertising Show.
A rare Beacon Ethyl Gasoline single-sided porcelain sign with a
die-cut lighthouse-shaped design, made around 1940 and in remarkable
condition (rated 9 on a scale of 1 to 10), gaveled for $55,000 at a Fall
Petroliana & Automobilia Auction held October 17th & 18th by
Matthews Auctions, LLC, based in Nokomis, Illinois. The sign was easily the top lot of the auction.

The Kane County Fairgrounds in St. Charles, Illinois. Most of you know it as home
of the famous Kane County Flea Market that’s been held here for many years. There’s
another antiques event that has made the Fairgrounds its home for even longer: The
Fox Valley Antiques Show, sponsored by CSADA - the Chicago Suburban Antique
Dealers Association. They just held the 39th edition of its fall show, and it was one of
the biggest and best in its long history. More than fifty-five dealers from seventeen
states displayed their wares at the site that has become synonymous with quality
antique shopping.

Kane County Fairgrounds Hosts 39th Annual Fox Valley
Autumn Antiques Show
Article & Photos by Brian Maloney
In fact, the CSADA has been holding their Fox Valley Antiques Shows here at the
Kane County Fairgrounds since the inaugural show more than fifty years ago. The
show has certainly grown in that time, and the fairgrounds has too – transforming

who had among the best selections at Fox Valley. My favorite there: a one-piece New

Petroliana & Automobilia Bring Fantastic Prices at
Matthews Auctions’ Fall Peotone Event
Article & Photos by Matthews Auctions, LLC
The two-day event was held in Peotone, Ill., prior to the start of the popular
Chicagoland Petroleum & Advertising Show
held twice a year, always in Peotone. The action
kicked off on Thursday evening, Oct. 17, with
200 lots of petroliana (gas station collectibles)
and automobilia. Another 450 lots came up for
bid on Friday, Oct. 18. More than 200 people
attended in person.
“This was our strongest and largest sale to
date,” declared Dan Matthews of Matthews
Auctions, LLC. And that’s no small statement,
considering the firm has been holding petroliana
and automobilia auctions for many years.
Matthews added, “We had lots of aggressive buyers, in person, online and over the phone. By the
time it was all done, we had grossed over $800,000.”
More than 350 people bid online, through Proxibid,
while 30 more bidders each bid by phone and through
Wyeth Tires single-sided porcelain absentee (left) bidding. “The spirited bidding

boasting great gloss and color – was similar to
one Matthews sold last spring.
Following are additional highlights from
the auction. All prices quoted include a 10 percent buyer’s premium.
An exceedingly rare Rickenbacker
Authorized Flat Rate Service double-sided
porcelain sign, saying “A car worthy of its
name” (a reference to the auto maker’s famous
founder, Eddie Rickenbacker, the highly decorated World War I flying ace), rated nearmint at 9+, showing the Rickenbacker firm’s
iconic logo and measuring 16 inches by 30
inches, topped out at $38,500.
A scarce double-sided porcelain die-cut
sign for Rand McNally Official Hotel, with a
graphic of a Native American drawing on a wall, rated 9,
Peerless Stages Bus Depot double- measuring 17 inches by 14 inches and feasided porcelain shield-shaped sign turing super gloss and color, with just a few
with large bus graphics ($33,000). chips at the top edge, knocked down at
$29,700. The sign was the most common of
the five types produced, and was probably made in the 1920s.
A super rare Wyeth Tires single-sided porcelain curved shield-shaped sign,
rated near-mint at 9+ and showing a whimsical graphic of a boy in early driving gear
sitting in a stack of tires, breezed to $34,100. The 22 inch by 18 inch sign was
marked “Wyeth Hardware & Mfg. Company, St. Joseph, Mo.” and “Burdick
Consumer Building, Chicago and Beaver Falls, Pa.”
A Mohawk Gasoline single-sided tombstone-shaped neon sign mounted on
a can, rated 9, 52 inches by 44 inches and with a graphic of an Indian with a single
feather, with the can new and the neon in working condition, fetched $30,800; and
an Oilzum Motor Oils (“The Cream of Pure Pennsylvania Oil”) double-sided porce-
17
lain sign with logo, rated 9 and 8.75, 24 inches in
diameter, with both sides showing nice
gloss and color, went to a determined bidder
for $27,500.
A set of five Weed (tire) Chains
signs and displays were sold as single lots.
One was a metal counter-top display with
contents (chains, pliers, bags and more), in
overall good condition (except for some
minor wear). It brought $8,250. Also, a
Mother Penn Motor Oil single-sided porcelain neon sign with logo, mounted on an original can, rated 9, changed hands for $16,500.
A Peerless Stages Bus Depot doublesided porcelain shield-shaped sign with great gloss
and color and in super condition, measuring 36 inches
by 31 inches, hammered for $33,000; and a
Dodge Service double-sided porcelain sign Rand McNally Official Hotel doublesided porcelain die-cut sign with

rated 8.75 and so scarce Dan Matthews said Indian graphics, rated 9 ($29,700).
he’d never sold one before, went to a new
owner for $7,150.
A Saxon Motor Car double-sided
porcelain sign, rated 9 on one side and 8.9 on
the other, 18 inches by 18 inches, marked
Ohio Valley Enameling Co. (Huntington,
W. Va.), with great graphics, garnered
$19,800; and a Cadillac double-sided
porcelain oval sign with crest logo, rated
9, 35 inches by 55 inches, with clean
fields and very nice gloss and color, rose
to $17,600.
A Paragon Motor Oil doublesided porcelain sign with derrick, truck
and refinery graphics and in the original
ring, 26 inches in diameter and boasting
good color and gloss, hit $16,500; and an

time one has been sold by Matthews,
made $14,800.
Matthews Auctions’ next big event will be the third annual Thanksgiving
gun, antique advertising and petroliana sale, slated for Nov. 29-Dec. 1 in Raymond,
Ill. Day one will feature guns, firearms advertising and coins, to include a collection
of silver dollars (1880s-1920s); days two and three will have petroliana (including
rare gas pumps), soda pop and country store items.
Dan Matthews has written a book about petroliana, titled The Fine Art of
Collecting and Displaying Petroliana. For more information on how to order a copy,

DONLEY AUCTIONS NOVEMBER SALE TO
INCLUDE KIDDIELAND CAROUSEL AND
OTHER UNIQUELY AMERICANA ITEMS
UNION, Ill. – One of the most respected antique experts in the country, Randy
Donley, founder of Donley Auctions, will present a spectacular one-night auction
featuring 300 one of a kind items, to include the Kiddieland carousel and a rare intact
1880’s Soda Fountain and Pharmacy interior on Saturday, November 16 at 6 p.m. at
Donley’s Wild West Town, 8512 South Union Road, Union, IL.
A “first look” preview party will be presented on Friday, November 15 at 6 p.m.,
also to be held at Donley’s. Viewing will also take place on Saturday at 10 a.m. until
start of auction.
Other featured items include two other one of
a kind carousels, a 1917
Harley
Davidson
motorcycle, a 1907
two-cylinder
Horseless Carriage
Automobile,
a
1953
Packard
C a r i b b e a n
Convertible (one of
only 30 known of its
kind), a 1932 Buick coupe, a
Steinway reproducing baby grand piano, leaded glass windows from the respected
Bogenrief Studios, and antique restored pedal cars. Also up for auction is arcade
equipment, nickelodeons, antique phonographs, music boxes, juke boxes, and paper
and tin advertising. The event conveniently takes place the same weekend as the
Chicagoland Advertising, Slot Machine & Jukebox Show being held at the Pheasant
Run Hotel, only 30 minutes from the auction site.
The carousel from Kiddieland, the “PTC 72”, was manufactured by the
Philadelphia Toboggan Company, which was the largest producer of carousels and
roller coasters in the world. It was the last carousel that the company would make.
While the 50’ in diameter carousel will not be moved to the auction site for presen-
tation at the auction, the
carousel’s
signature
horses will be on full display at the event. The
“Kiddieland carousel”
with 48 hand carved
horses, is the only
carousel in the world
with 16 “signature” animals, all of which have
the company’s logo carefully carved into the animal structures.
The 1890’s Mt.
Washington
Soda
Fountain and Pharmacy interior from Haverhill Massachusetts is a significant piece
of Americana history. The complete interior boasts all of the original displays, walls,
drawer pulls and artisan leaded glass fixtures. The pharmacy, which was in business
until 1984, was painstakingly disassembled piece by piece. The soda fountain portion of the interior features a polished marble counter and original marble syrup
fountain produced by Lippincott Co, an early innovator in soda fountain manufacturing. This piece is a prime example of originality and completeness.
The auction will also feature an 1880’s Hershell-Spillman Steam Carousel, one of
the first carousels ever made. The machine appeals to a multitude of people, as it
attracts steam collectors, train enthusiasts, and overall passionate carousel lovers.
This 1880’s steam carousel has 24 horses with two chariots and the original steam
engine that came from the factory.
Also being auctioned is a solar carousel. This is the only self-sustaining, solar-powered carousel in the country. The amazing all-white carousel is powered by solar panels and is lit up by colorful TETRA Contour LED lights. The model is completely
portable and traveled all over the country to promote solar energy. The 1940s Allan
Herschell Carousel runs on clean energy and was painted all white to illustrate this
point.
Both the steam and solar-powered carousels will be on full display and running at the
high profile auction.
