of Dionysus
The Wine Route of Northern Greece that bears the name of the carefree God Dionysus begins
at the Mt Pangeo. It runs through Kavala and Drama and winds through the jewel-like mountain villages and the beautiful river banks of Lake Kerkini, before going east to Thrace, with its
wild natural beauties and many hidden treasures.
Mt Pangeo is a must. It is sometimes called the golden mountain since in
antiquity famous gold and silver mines were located there. Pangeo is also
connected to the many myths and traditions about Dionysus and the dark
orphic teachings. Put mysteries and myths aside though and travel back to

stretches of sandy beaches flooded with people during the summer. Next
stop: Kavala. This small town has a commanding location. It was built amphitheatrically and boasts a stately aqueduct, a Byzantine castle and walls cling
to the landscape’s rocky outcroppings where the picturesque houses of the
old town are perched. Leaving Kavala behind and heading towards Drama,
make sure to stop at Filippoi, the most important archaeological site in
eastern Macedonia.
Drama, built at the foot of the Mt Falakro, called the «mountain of flowers»
by the locals, stands out from the flatlands that sprawl beneath it. Drama is
one of the most active wine-making regions of Northern Greece with lovely
wineries open to visitors, exquisite wines and an ever-growing number of

A tour around the wider area
is ideal for those who adore
mountains and forests. You
will find: Falakro Ski Center;
colorful stalactites and reflections at the Aggiti cave; unforgettable routes through beeches, pines, evergreens, birches and rare spruces, in the untouched forests of Frakto and
Elati. Then, take in some of the food, inns and shopping in the traditional villages of Kokkinogia, Korifes, Taxiarhes, Granitis, Volakas and Paranesti.
This route will then take you a little west, past the town of Serres and onto
one of the most breathtaking lakes in Greece, Kerkini. Sports fans and the
intrepid will find much to do here, such as: canoeing-kayaking on the lake;
visiting the cave of Alistrati –one of the largest and most beautiful in Greece;
take a four-wheel-drive excursion on the green Beles or ski down the white
slopes of Lailias ski center at Vrontou. Food lovers should head to the
beautiful mountain villages of Ano Poroia, Ano Orini and Rodopoli. Finish
your journey with a tasting at the Apostoli’s Vineyard.
Dionysus is a long and circuitous route. To the east, over the Nestos River, take
a tour of the valley known as the Thracian Tempe. The river runs through landscapes of unbelievable beauty. Take a detour and pass through Hrissoupoli
or hop the ferry from Keramoti to the lush green paradise of Thassos.
Make a stop at Xanthi, a beautiful city with both eastern flair and modern
buildings, where contemporary shopping centers sit next to the small alleys
and old villas of times past. In the seaside hamlet of Avdira visit the new
winery of Domaine Vourvoukeli and continue on to the noteworthy
archaeological museum housing the many discoveries made in the ancient
city, birthplace of Democritus. For food and a place to stay search in Mandra,
Toxotes and Gerakas. Mediterranean cuisine meets the East here, creating
a fancy mix.
We’ll drive next to Vistonida, a seemingly endless lagoon of unique beauty,
world-renown as a refuge of wild Mediterranean birds. Stop for seafood at
the picturesque port of Porto Lagos and at Fanari where a fleet of fishing
boats rests.
From there, arrive in the center of Thrace. Komotini, a modern city with an intense eastern aura, outdoor bazaars, mosques and parks will welcome you.
The unique wild beauty of Rodopi with the Thrakika Meteora and the Livaditis
waterfall beckons. Maronia, by the sea, at the foot of the Ismaros mountain
range, is a calm respite and a small, lovely village that has become a summer
hotspot. Wines, of course, are de rigueur, so stop at the Maronia winery.
End the journey through Alexandroupoli and Feres and wind up in Soufli,
famed for its silk production.

Eine Tour in der weiteren Umgebung ist ideal für alle, die Berge und Wälder
lieben. Dort werden Sie das Skizentrum von Falakro finden, farbenprächtige
Stalaktiten und Lichtreflexionen in der Tropfsteinhöhle von Aggitis sehen, unvergessliche Wanderwege zwischen Buchen, Pinien, Eichen, Birken und seltenen
Rottannen in den unberührten Wäldern von Frakto und Elati beschreiten. Die traditionellen Dörfer Kokkinogia, Korifes, Taxiarches, Granitis, Volakas, Paranesti
haben einiges zu bieten in Sachen Essen, Übernachten und das Einkaufen von
traditionellen lokalen Produkten.
Die Route geht westwärts vorbei an der Stadt Serres und bringt Sie zum
wunderschönen See Kerkini. Folgende Angebote stehen zur Verfügung: KanuKajak im See, Besuch der Tropfsteinhöhle von Alistrati –eine der größten und
schönsten in Griechenland. Zudem können Sie einen Ausflug mit dem
Geländewagen im grünen Berg Beles machen oder Ski auf den weißen Pisten
des Lailia Skizentrums in Vrontou fahren. Die schönen Bergdörfer Ano Poroia,
Ano Orini und Rodopoli bieten viele Alternativen, wenn es um Essen,
Übernachten oder Shopping geht. Über den Weinbau in der Region können Sie
sich im Weingut Ktima t’Apostoli informieren.
Von jetzt an geht es nur noch ostwärts. Sie fahren über dem Fluss Nestos. Sein
Tal wird Tempi von Thrakien genannt, denn der Fluss fließt durch unglaublich
schöne Landschaften, die zu erwandern sich allemal lohnt. Ein Abstecher führt
über die Stadt Chrisoupoli nach Keramoti, wo Sie die Fähre nach Thassos, ein
grünes Inselparadies, nehmen können.
Legen Sie einen Stopp in Xanthi ein, eine Stadt mit östlichem Flair, wo moderne
Gebäude und Einkaufszentren neben kleinen Gassen und alten Villen den
Reichtum vergangener Zeiten andeuten. Im Küstenstädtchen Avdira können Sie
das neue Weingut der Familie Vourvoukeli besuchen und später das
archäologische Museum, wo die Funde aus den Ausgrabungen in der
Heimatstadt von Demokrit ausgestellt werden. Für Essen und Übernachtung
bieten sich die Orte Mandra, Toxotes und Gerakas. Hier trifft die mediterrane
Küche auf den Osten, daraus wird eine berauschende Mischung!
Fahren Sie entlang der Lagune Vistonida, eine endlos scheinende Lagune von
einzigartiger Schönheit, weltweit bekanntes Refugium für mediterrane Wildvögel.

This trip has intense oenological surprises in store, from the wines
produced on the stately Mt Pangeo, in Drama, Serres, Avdira and in
lovely Maronia.
On the southeastern foot of Pangeo, the vineyards are cooled by the
Strimonic Gulf while the mountain shields them from cold northern winds.
The terrain is rocky, arid and well-drained. Wine-makers have created state
of the art of vineyards here, as well as amazing wineries. They have planted
international varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Sémillon,
Ugnie Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah as well as the Greek
varieties: Roditis, Assyrtiko and Limnio. The wines produced here are
Regional Wines of Mt Pangeo.

The irresistible Dionysian charm hidden in the slopes of the Mt Pangeo
inevitably leads to Drama, with its many wonderful wineries. Its vineyards in
the valley and in the low hills east of the town are models for cultivation.
They are planted with French red and white varieties suitable to the clay soils
and continental climate of the area. Vineyards with Roditis, Assyrtiko,
Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Ugnie Blanc, Limnio, Cabernet Sauvignon,
Cabernet Franc and Merlot give the Regional Wines of Drama.
In the vineyards of Serres, the local Zoumiatiko grape is cultivated with
Muscat of Alexandria for the production of Regional Wines of Serres.
The vineyards in Maronia are planted amphitheatrically on gently sloping
hills with the Mt Ismaros behind, protecting it from cold northern winds. In
front of them the Aegean Sea makes the winter cold milder and cools the
area with a breeze from Samothrace in the summer. The Regional Wines of
Ismaros are made from the grape varieties of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc,
Roditis, Limnio, Mavroudi, Syrah, Merlot, Mourvèdre and Grenache Rouge.
The indication for Regional Wines of Avdira was recently approved for white,
rose and red wines from the grape varieties Zoumiatiko, Roditis, Pamidi and
the well-known international varieties.

Am südöstlichen Fuß des Pangeo werden die Weinberge durch den Golf von
Strimonas abgekühlt, während der Berg sie vor den Nordwinden schützt. Die
Böden sind steinig, unfruchtbar und wasserdurchlässig. Hier haben Winzer
mustergültige Weinberge und wunderbare Weingüter geschaffen. Sie haben
internationale Rebsorten: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Sémillon, Ugni
Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah und auch griechische Rebsorten:
Roditis, Assyrtiko und Limnio angepflanzt. Die Weine, die hier produziert
werden, haben die Klassifikation Landweine von Pangeo.
Der unwiderstehliche dionysische Charme, versteckt in den Hängen des
Pangeo, führt unweigerlich nach Drama mit ihren vielen wunderschönen
Weingütern. Ihre Weinberge im Tal und in den niedrigen Hügeln östlich der
Stadt sind mustergültig vornehmlich mit französischen weißen und roten
Rebsorten angepflanzt, die sich für den lehmigen Boden und das
kontinentale Klima der Region besser eignen. Weinberge mit Roditis,
Assyrtiko, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Ugni Blanc und Limnio, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot. Aus diesen Rebsorten werden die Weine
mit der Klassifikation Landweine von Drama, gekeltert.
WEINE UND DESTILLATE
In den Weinbergen von Serres wird die Rebsorte Zoumiatis zusammen mit der
Rebsorte Muscat d’ Alexandrie angebaut, sie ergeben den Landwein von Serres.

Weiß- und Rotwein.
Die Weinberge in Maronia sind in den weichen Hügeln amphitheatrisch
gepflanzt, der Berg Ismaros in ihrem Rücken schützt sie vor den
Nordwinden. Das ägäische Meer auf der anderen Seite mildert die
Winterkälte ab. Im Sommer kühlt eine frische Brise aus Samothraki ab. Aus
den Rebsorten Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Roditis, Limnio, Mavroudi,
Syrah, Merlot, Mourvèdre, Grenache Rouge entstehen die Weine mit der
Klassifikation Landwein von Ismaros.
Unlängst wurde auch die Klassifikation Landwein von Avdira für Weißweine,
Rosés und Rotweine zugelassen, die aus den Rebsorten Zoumiatiko, Roditis,
Pamidi und den bekannten internationalen Rebsorten gekeltert werden.

Vassilis Tsaktsarlis. Take a tour to the
vineyards, the production facilities and

This family business began after the
eclipse of tobacco farming in the area and
as a way to stay close to the land and the
area they love. The workshop produces
traditionally shaped pasta as well as
organic pasta; some of the traditional
pasta is made with buffalo’s milk.

handmade silks can be found, while the
top floor displays furniture, cookery,
clothing and tools that create an image
of Soufli’s past. There is a traditional
offering of a sweet or snack (tratarisma)
before we go on a tour and watch an
informative video about the history of
Thrace and silk.

A thematic museum about silk
production in a neoclassic building in
the center of Soufli. The tour acquaints
us with traditional as well as
contemporary silk production and
processing methods. The present-day
silk factory on the 3rd km of the
National Road Soufli–Alexandroupoli is
also open to visitors.

The Wine Roads are really a series
of suggested, select routes for the avid
and curious traveler interested in visiting
some of the most picturesque and fascinating
venues in Europe.
Die Weinstraßen sind ein Ausflugsvorschlag
für den Erlebnisreisenden von heute. Sie sind
ausgewählte Routen mit vielen interessanten
Tipps, die Sie an die malerischsten Orte
der verschiedenen Weinregionen führen.
There are wine roads in almost all
wine-producing countries. In Greece,
the first organized wine roads were outlined
in 1993 by the Wine Producers Association
of the Northern Greece Vineyard
and given the official name
“Wine Roads of Northern Greece”.
Weinstraßen gibt es in fast allen
weinbautreibenden Ländern. In Griechenland
ist das der erste Versuch dieser Art, der von
13 Weinerzeugern im nordgriechischen Bereich
gemacht wurde. Sie haben 1993 die “Verband
der Weinproduzenten des Weingartens
Nordgriechenlands” ins Leben gerufen, eben
die heutigen Weinstraßen Nordgriechenlands.
Today, there are 37 members of the union
and 8 routes that cross the whole
of Northern Greece, with suggested stops
at the notable wineries of Thessaly
(Rapsani and Krania), Epirus, Macedonia,
and Thrace. Signage along the roads
directs travelers to vineyards, wineries
and other points of interest.
The many restaurants, tavernas, inns,
hotels, traditional shops,
and alternative activities round out
the traveler’s experience along the
Wine Roads. Each designated venue
has been selected according to specific
qualitative criteria and is so indicated
with a special seal of approval.

Heute umfasst die Vereinigung bereits
37 Mitglieder auf 8 verschiedenen Weinrouten
in ganz Nordgriechenland, nämlich
Thessalien (Papsani und Krania), Epirus,
Mazedonien und Thrakien. Alle Routen sind
gut beschildert und lassen Sie die Weingüter
und deren Weinberge einfach finden.
Die Karte wird ergänzt durch Hinweise
auf Restaurants, Tavernen, Hotels und
Herbergen, dazu Läden mit traditionellen
Erzeugnissen und Orte mit attraktiven
Freizeitangeboten. Es handelt sich dabei
allesamt um Kooperationsmitglieder der Weinstraßen Nordgriechenlands, die nach den
strengen Qualitätskriterien bewertet wurden.
