As you find yourself right in the center of the Wine Roads of Northern
Greece, head towards charming Thessaloniki. But just before
entering the city, turn left towards Kalohori.
Kalohori has many hidden charms. The sheltered lagoons of the
Thermaikos Gulf create a unique ecosystem. Low-lying reeds and dry
branches hide cormorants and other water birds, while seagulls go
hunting for their meal. The view of the gulf, with Thessaloniki in the
distance, is spectacular. Kalohori is home to the Kehris Winery,
a must-see and stop for a delicious tasting of wines and select
traditional liqueurs.

der Weinstrassen von Nordgriechenland und fahren Richtung Thessaloniki. Bevor wir die
charmante Stadt erreichen, biegen wir links nach Kalochori
ein. Die Gegend hat durchaus
versteckte Reize. Wir fahren
durch das Dorf und erreichen
einen Mini-Wasserbiotop, der
aus den Lagunen des Golfs von
Thermaikos gebildet wird.
Hinter niedrigem Schilf und trockenen Sträuchern verstecken
sich Kormorane und andere
Wasservögel, während die

Thessaloniki! Die ewige Stadt,
die es klassisch, hellenistisch,
Pirgadikia
römisch und byzantinisch
gegeben hat. Heute gehört sie
auf dem Balkan, und sie vereint östliche und westliche europäische
Einflüsse. Ihre glanzvolle, zeitlose Existenz bezeugen Kirchen, der
Markt, der Palast, das Hippodrom, die alten Stadtmauern, die Bäder,
die Heiligtümer und ihre Art Deco-Gebäude. Sie wirbt mit den Höhen
von Seich Sou, den abschüssigen Straßen von Saranta Ekklisies bis
hin zum Hippodrom, von Vardaris und dem Hafen bis zum Stadtteil
Krini am Meer. Und überall hat die Gastronomie eine besondere
Stellung.
Unser Weg führt uns am Badeort Agia Triada vorbei, südöstlich nach
Epanomi. Am Ende des Golfes von Thermaikos liegt Akrotiri, ein Ort,

On to Thessaloniki, one of the world’s eternal cities, having enjoyed
an urban existence from Classical Greece onwards, through
Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine eras onto the present. Today is a
major Balkan city, having always belonged both to the East and to
Europe. The many churches, the agora, the palace, the hippodrome,
the castle, the baths, the shrines, the Art Deco buildings all bear
witness to its timelessness and beauty. Thessaloniki’s many
pleasures start from its high grounds at Seih Sou, onto the hills of
the Saranta Eklisies down to the Hippodrome and from the Vardaris
and port area to the seaside district of Krini. In every one of these
spots, food is an important element, for Thessaloniki is a city of food
lovers and self-declared gastronomes.
The wine route goes through the seaside resort of Agia Triada and
leads southeast, to Epanomi. Along the way it heads to Akrotiri, at
the edge of the Thermaikos Gulf, where surfers sail. You can gaze at
the birds from the wetlands next to the sand dunes and enjoy a quick
late afternoon swim near the old shipwreck… or a dip into the
seafood meze at the tavernas nearby. A visit to the well-maintained
Domaine Gerovassiliou should not be missed. Beyond the great
wines and gorgeous grounds, it houses an impressive collection of
antique cork screws.
From Epanomi, head inland toward the region’s mountains, passing
Langadas and the slopes of Vertiskos. Savor the invigorating
mountain air and lush greenery and then visit some of the highaltitude traditional villages, such as Ossa, Lefkohori, Sohos and
Askos. A visit to the Domaine Babatzimopoulos and the Arvanitidis
Winery will whet your appetite for a visit to nearby tavernas. Here
you will find dishes based on the region’s traditional products,
choice meats, greens and seasonal fresh vegetables.
The journey continues east, past the lakes Koronia and Volvi, from
Vrasna to the green slopes of the Mt Koukos and ends up in the
Strimonic Gulf.

Verkosten Sie die Charakterweine und besuchen Sie auch das
liebevoll gestaltete Weinbaumuseum neben dem Weinkeller. Sie
werden überrascht sein!
Von Epanomi führt die Weinstrasse landeinwärts in die Berge der
Region. Sie führt an Langadas vorbei und dann hinauf zu den
Hängen des Bergs Vertiskos. Atmen Sie die saubere Bergluft auf
einer Höhe von 650m, genießen Sie die üppige, grüne Landschaft
und die schönen traditionellen Bergdörfer Ossa, Lefkohori, Sohos
und Askos. Es ist sicher, dass der Besuch und die Weinverkostung in
den Weingütern Babatzimopoulos und Arvanitidis Ihren Appetit
anregen werden. Machen Sie sich keine Sorgen! In den Restaurants
und Tavernen der Region gibt es lokale Gerichte, vorzügliche
Fleischsorten, Blattgemüse und Gemüse der Saison.
Die Reise geht weiter ostwärts vorbei an den Seen von Koronia und
Volvi, an Vrasna auf den grünen Hängen des Bergs Koukos und endet
am Golf von Strimonas.

From the flatlands to the shores of the Thermaikos Gulf and to the
highlands of the region’s mountainous environs, the Thessaloniki
prefecture produces many renowned wines. Let yourself go and travel
with them, guided by their dazzling colours, aromas and flavours.
Start your wine explorations at Nea Mesimvria, a town settled by Greeks from
Northern Thrace who were already well-versed in viticulture and brought their
knowledge with them. Today, the white Roditis grape is mainly cultivated.
Blended with another white grape, Zoumiatiko, they give the Regional Wine
of Messimvria.
Another important wine center, right along the coast of the Thermaikos Gulf,
is Epanomi, with its quintessential temperate Mediterranean climate. Its
proximity to the sea brings cooling sea breezes, which prevent the sudden
maturation of the grapes. Epanomi’s microclimate, as a result, makes for an
ideal vineyard. The Regional Wines are produced from a wide variety of
grapes, including Assyrtiko, Malagouzia, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay,
Viognier among the whites; and Syrah, Merlot, Grenache Rouge, Limnio,
Mavroudi, Mavrotragano among the reds.
In the highlands of this wine route, most vines are cultivated on the slopes
of Mt Vertiskos. Xinomavro, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah are
cultivated side by side with the white varieties of Athiri, Assyrtiko, Malvazia,
Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The Regional rosé wine is produced from
Xinomavro.
Finally, the Regional Wines of Thessaloniki are produced from all the varieties
cultivated in the region.

Vom Flachland bis zur Küste des Golfs von Thermaikos und hoch in
den Bergen in der Präfektur Thessaloniki werden namhafte Weine
produziert. Entdecken Sie sie auf Ihrer Reise geführt von ihren

Beginnen Sie Ihre Erkundigungen in Nea Messivmria. Die meisten Einwohner kamen
aus Ostrumelien, wo sie im Weinbau sehr versiert waren. Sie haben ihre
Erfahrungen mitgebracht, als sie in ihre neue Heimat einwanderten. Heute bauen
sie hauptsächlich die weiße Rebsorte Roditis an, die mit der ebenfalls weißen Rebsorte Zoumiatiko verschnitten wird. Daraus entsteht der Landwein von Messimvria.
An der Küste des Golfs von Thermaikos liegt Epanomi. Das Klima hier ist
mediterran mit warmen Sommern. Die frische Meeresbrise verhindert eine
zu schnelle Reife der Trauben. Alles in allem ist das Mikroklima von Epanomi
ideal für den Weinbau. Die Weine, die aus den Rebsorten Assyrtiko,
Malagousia, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier und Syrah, Merlot,
Grenache Rouge, Limnio, Mavroudi, Mavrotragano produziert werden,
werden als Landweine von Epanomi klassifiziert.
In den Höhenlagen der Präfektur auf den Hängen des Berg Vertiskos werden
die Rebsorten Xinomavro, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot und Syrah neben den
weißen Rebsorten Athiri, Assyrtiko, Malvasia, Chardonnay und Sauvignon
Blanc angebaut. Aus der Xinomavro wird der Rosewein Landwein von Playies
Vertiskou gemacht.
Aus den rebsorte, die in der Prafektur non Thessaloniki kultiviert sind,
werden die Landweine von Thessaloniki produziert.

The Wine Roads are really a series
of suggested, select routes for the avid
and curious traveler interested in visiting
some of the most picturesque and fascinating
venues in Europe.
Die Weinstraßen sind ein Ausflugsvorschlag
für den Erlebnisreisenden von heute. Sie sind
ausgewählte Routen mit vielen interessanten
Tipps, die Sie an die malerischsten Orte
der verschiedenen Weinregionen führen.
There are wine roads in almost all
wine-producing countries. In Greece,
the first organized wine roads were outlined
in 1993 by the Wine Producers Association
of the Northern Greece Vineyard
and given the official name
“Wine Roads of Northern Greece”.
Weinstraßen gibt es in fast allen
weinbautreibenden Ländern. In Griechenland
ist das der erste Versuch dieser Art, der von
13 Weinerzeugern im nordgriechischen Bereich
gemacht wurde. Sie haben 1993 die “Verband
der Weinproduzenten des Weingartens
Nordgriechenlands” ins Leben gerufen, eben
die heutigen Weinstraßen Nordgriechenlands.
Today, there are 37 members of the union
and 8 routes that cross the whole
of Northern Greece, with suggested stops
at the notable wineries of Thessaly
(Rapsani and Krania), Epirus, Macedonia,
and Thrace. Signage along the roads
directs travelers to vineyards, wineries
and other points of interest.
The many restaurants, tavernas, inns,
hotels, traditional shops,
and alternative activities round out
the traveler’s experience along the
Wine Roads. Each designated venue
has been selected according to specific
qualitative criteria and is so indicated
with a special seal of approval.

Heute umfasst die Vereinigung bereits
37 Mitglieder auf 8 verschiedenen Weinrouten
in ganz Nordgriechenland, nämlich
Thessalien (Papsani und Krania), Epirus,
Mazedonien und Thrakien. Alle Routen sind
gut beschildert und lassen Sie die Weingüter
und deren Weinberge einfach finden.
Die Karte wird ergänzt durch Hinweise
auf Restaurants, Tavernen, Hotels und
Herbergen, dazu Läden mit traditionellen
Erzeugnissen und Orte mit attraktiven
Freizeitangeboten. Es handelt sich dabei
allesamt um Kooperationsmitglieder der Weinstraßen Nordgriechenlands, die nach den
strengen Qualitätskriterien bewertet wurden.
