Table Mountain National Park Launches Latest Access Card for Locals
Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) has launched its latest limited entry
access card - My Green Card – the first four thousand (4000) of which were
produced in association with Hi-Tec. The card, available exclusively to Cape
Town residents, provides twelve free entries into any of the TMNP paypoints– Cape of Good Hope (Cape Point), Boulders Penguin Colony,
Oudekraal, Silvermine and the braai/picnic areas at Tokai, Newlands and
Perdekloof. The cost of the card - R80 - is linked to the cost of one adult entry
into Cape Point. It will increase to R85 on 1 November 2011, in-line with
South African National Parks annual tariff increases.
“From its early years, the park has recognised the need for affordable access
for local residents and introduced the Go Green Card in as early as 1999. This
card was replaced by the Cape Town Wild Card, which has now subsequently
been revised again as the My Green Card” says Park Manager for TMNP,
Paddy Gordon. “We still endeavour to make the park accessible to the
broader community of Cape Town and this is achieved through the saving of
at least R880 when using a My Green Card. We anticipate welcoming new
visitors who recognise the use of this card as a new opportunity, as well as
visitors who historically visited the park, returning to favourite destinations
of the past.”
Ian Little, Hi-Tec Marketing Manager had this to say, “Hi-Tec has a long
established relationship with SANParks and is delighted to partner with
TMNP on the My Green Card. We are committed to supporting initiatives
which allow the public the opportunity, at low cost, to experience the Cape’s
wonderful fauna and flora, hopefully in their Hi-Tec footwear!”
What sets My Green Card apart from previous TMNP local access cards is
that card production and administration costs have been significantly
reduced, ensuring that the bulk of the purchase price goes directly into
conservation efforts. Also unlike its predecessors, My Green Card will be
easier to obtain in a variety of places throughout the Cape Town Metropole
via TMNP offices immediately and Cape Town Tourism Visitor Information
Centres from September this year.
My Green Card holders are also eligible for a 20% discount off Table
Mountain Cableway tickets and 20% off their new Cable Card, which allows
the holder free cable car trips for a year.
When purchasing TMNP’s My Green Card, a South African ID, 2 ID
photographs and proof of residence is required.

Dear Members and friends!
This time it gives me great pleasure to share some really exciting news with you
all:
WE NOW HAVE OUR VERY OWN WEBSITE !

After a few teething problems and substantial tweaking, we finally got it off the
ground and, I must, say, it looks great. The initial setup was done by yours truly,
then I showed it to my colleagues on the Austrian committee who were happy
with the concept, then a company called Tribal Computers got on board to turn
my idea into a website, thereby also adding some of their suggestions, and
presto, our website was born.
What does it entail? Well, it starts off with the obligatory Home page using a nifty
software program (which Heinz managed to locate overseas) that shows us Cape
Town in summer followed by an Austrian summer scene, then the same two
towns in winter – i.e. Cape Town still in blooming sunshine and Austria with
snow.The left hand column then allows you to read some up-to-the-minute News
from Austria (almost like a newspaper) followed by an introduction by name of
your chosen Committee for 2011. It then continues with a brief write-up on the
History of our Club in Cape Town, then a Club locator (so that you and your
friends can find us), a Function calendar for 2011, a Senior section and
Mountain section, which (for the time being) is a copy/paste from our monthly
newsletter, some great pictures from Past events, a write-up of What our club
actually offers, an on-line as well as PDF and Excel Membership form, a Wish
list of things we still need in the club, a page showing some Useful links and
websites, a page of typical Austrian products, a Business directory which will
ultimately show the contact details of as many Austrian businesses in the
Western Cape as possible, and finally a “Contact Us” page.
It goes without say that this was quite a challenge, but in my humble opinion, it
was well worth it. In the not-too-distant future we will also sport a page for
Sponsors. Those amongst you who have already supported the Club will of
course get first preference in terms of exposure on our website. We are going to
make you even more well-known than you already are.As a little supplement you
also get to see what the Cape Town weather has in store for you for today and
the following two days.
Until further notice I will now monitor the activity on this site and will administer it
as well as attempt to keep it updated on a regular basis. This obviously needs to
be a “living thing” and not be left unattended after all the effort that has gone into
it. Should you have any favourable statement or constructive criticism to make,
please address those to me at my new dedicated Austrian Club email address:
[email protected]. I will then attempt to get back to you as soon as
possible – not always on the same day though, so please bear with me.I spoke
about the weather tag on our website earlier. I was given a website some two
months ago now and have monitored its accuracy over the past 60 days, and I
must say that I have yet to find a better site than this – it’s awesomely accurate.
The unbelievable part of it is that it’s not even a local site – I’m sorry if any one of
you works for the South African Weather Bureau, but your predictions suck! The
one to log on to is undoubtedly www.yr.no. This is a Norwegian site, yes you read
correctly, a Scandinavian website that is 100% more accurate than ZA about our
own local weather. The other beauty is that you can home in almost into the area
you live. I e.g. stay in the Southern Suburbs and get my predictions for the
Zandvlei area an surrounds. You will see some Norwegian writing initially, but
you’ll find the English tags and grow accustomed to this site very quickly. I was
also told that ZA farmers, fishermen, etc. rely on this site as well, and that makes
it an almost sure thing as these communities are dependant on the weather big
time.This can also be great for our Mountain Club who can check up two weeks in
advance what the weather is likely to be on the day of their hike, so enjoy.
Other than that, folks, not much more to report on the techie front this time ‘round,
other than Blackberry is trying very hard to catch up to Apple in terms of
applications for their phones. They however have a while to go yet as Apple is
gradually nearing the 400,000 apps region. I merely have a portion of them on my
phone, but boy, do they work well. Furthermore I obviously go for the freebies
with only the odd paid app really worthwhile paying a once-off sum for, such as
e.g. Der Kurier or Flight Track which shows you every single flight in the world, 24
: 7, with exact flight status and current position of the flight number. You are
notified about delays if you use the actual airline’s mobile site, and virtually all the
international airlines have their own sites by now, be it Austrian, Lufthansa, Air
Berlin, Swiss, KLM, Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, and, and, and.
It’s pretty scary what technology has provided us with over the past decade, and,
as I always say, even scarier what we’re still in for in years to come. A visit to a
coffee shop these days spells out the new era of mankind, typing away
ferociously at their smart phones, laptops, netbooks and tablets (no, not the
health kind).
With that great news, dear friends, I leave you to ponder over our new “baby”,
enjoy it, let me know what you think, but most importantly, as ever, stay healthy,
stay sharp, look after yourselves and hope to c u again at the S&A Club.

Nationalrat beschloss Ortstafellösung in Kärnten. Am 6. Juli haben alle fünf im
Nationalrat vertretenen Parteien beschlossen, mit dem die Kärtner OrtstafelFrage endgültig gelöst werden soll. Mit der Novelle zum Volksgruppengesetz hat
der Nationalrat beschlossen, 16 4 zweisprachige Ortstafeln aufzustellen.
Der Nationalrat gibt grünes Licht für Ökostrom und Pflegefonds.
50 Mio. Euro weden heuer für neue Projekte in Sachen Stromgewinnung aus
Wind, Sonne und Biomasse bereitgestellt. Bis 2015 soll Österr. wieder frei sein
von Atomstrom-Importen und soll dann wieder zum Stromexporteur werden.
Mit den neu beschlossenen Pflegefonds sollen die steigenden Pflegekosten der
Länder finanziert werden. Das Pflegegeldreformgesetz wird vereinfacht, statt
rund 300 Stellen werden künftig nur noch acht für Administration und
Auszahlung zuständig sein. Die Verwaltung des Bundespflegegelds wandert in die
Kompetenz des Bundes.
20 Vorschläge zur Integration sind vorgeschlsgen worden.
2010 lebten in Österr. 1,54 Millionen Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund. Das
sind 18,6 % der Gesamtbevölkerung. Geplant ist eine verpflichtende Vorsorgeuntersuchung für alle Kinder in der Pflichtschule. Weiters soll ein Ausschuss bei
Wohnungsvergaben für eine "Durchmischung" sorgen. Empfolen wird auch ein
zweites verpflichtendes Kindergartenjahr für Kinder, die nicht Deutsch sprechen.
Bundeshymne wird geändert.
SPÖ,ÖVP und Grüne haben sich darauf geeinigt, die Bundeshymne in der
Textpassage " Heimat bist du grosser Söhne" um " Töchter " zu erweitern. Die
genaue Textänderung ist noch nicht fix. Die entsprechende Gesetzänderung soll
im Herbst kommen, mit 1.Jänner 2012 könnte der neue Text vepflichtend sein
Der polnische Präsident Bronislaw Komorowski hielt sich am 13. und 14. Juli in
Österr. auf. "Wir sind Euro-Optimisten", äusserte sich Komorowski positiv über
die Zukunft der Gemeinschaftswährung der Eurozone.
Bundeskanzler Werner Faymann hat in einem Interview mit der Tageszeitun g
"Österreich" (10. Juli) die Notwendigkeit einer sachlich geführten Debatte über
Euro und Finanzmarkt -Reform unterstrichen. Zu wenig sei in Europa bisher bei
der Regulierung der Finanzmärkte geschehen. Der Euro ist eine starke Währung,
so sagte Faymann.
Der griechische Aussenminister Savtos Lambrinidis hat am 7. Juli in Wien einen
Besuch abgestattet. Er hat versichert : "Es wird kein einziger Euro, der von
Österreichern in Griechenland investiert worden ist verloren gehen". Beide
Aussenminister haben sich zu einer EU-Erweiterung am Westbalkan bekannt.
Der Präsident des Europäischen Parlaments, Jerzy Buzek, führte am 7. Juli in
Wien Gespräche über das Hilfapaket für Griechenland. Buzek appelierte an die
Solidarität mit dem hoch verschuldeten Griechenland. " Wir retten die Griechen,
weil wir euch retten wolllen, sagte Buzek.
Faymann: : Österreich ist Modellregion in Europa".
Die Zusammenarbeit in Österreich ist vorbildlich, dafür werden wir in anderen
Länder beneidet". Länder wie Österreich oder Deutschland hätten die Krise am
besten bewältigt. Dass Österr. überraschend schnell aus der Krise gekommen ist,
kam auch für die meisten Ökonomen eher unerwartet, nur beu den Finanzen sei
man noch beim Stabilisieren.
Mehr Förderung für Österr. Exporte in aussereuropäische Länder.
Das Wirtschaftsministerium steckt in den kommenden zwei Jahren 25 Mio. Euro
in die Exportförderung. Nach Schätzungen der EU-Kommission werden bis 2015
etwa 90% des Wachstums ausserhalb der EU generiert.
Grosser Österr. Staatspreis für Bildende Kunst an Heinz Tesar.
Der 1939 in Innsbruck geborene Heinz Tesar ist Architekt. Zu seinen bekannteste
Bauten gehören die Donaucitykirche, das Museumsammlung Essl, das
Keltenmuseum in Hallein, sowie der Umbau des Bode-Museums in Berlin. Er
entwarf nicht nur Kirchen , sondern auch eine Synagoge (Dresden) und ein
islamisches Kulturzentrum (Wien )u.s.m. Die Preisverlehung ist mit 30 000 Euro
dotiert.
Der 1951 in Madrid geborene Romancier, Erzahler, Essayist und übersetzer Javier
Marias wird für sein Gesamtwerk mit dem 25 000 Euro dotierten Österr. Staatspreis für
Europäische Literatur 2011 ausgezeichnet.

"Die Tage der utschen Literatur"- Ein Wettlesen von 14 KandidatInnen, wurde
von Urs Widmer eröffnet und live in 3 sat übertragen. Der mit 25 000 Euro
dotierte Hauptpreis wurde an Julia Maja Haderlap zugesprochen.

Kulturerlebniss am Bodensee
Die Bregenzer Festspiele stehen 2011 mit Umberto Giordanos " André Chenier"
als Spiel auf dem See und der Hausoper " Achterbahn" von Judith Weir ganz im
Zeichen des Mottos " Schöpfung ". Insgesamt sind von 20. Juli bis 21. August
rund 100 Veranstaltungen geplant.

Wien tanzt wieder: Impulstanz-Festival
Das vom 12. Juli bis 14. August in Wien statfindende Festival stellt sich auch in
diesem Jahr wieder der Herausforderung, Zusammenhänge im zeitgenössischenn
Tanz darzustellen. Die Österr. Tanzszene konnte sich in den vergangenen Jahren
ausgezeichneten Ruf erwerben und bewegte sich im europäischen Spitzenfeld.

Neuregelung der Studiengebühren
Der Rechnungshof kritisierte die 2008 beschlossene Ausnahmeregelung zur
Einhebung von Studiengebühren als zu unpräzise. Es soll mit einem neuen
Modell ersetzt werden.
40 Millionen Euro für Universitäten
Ab kommendem Herbst stehen den heimischen Universitäten zusätzlich zur
Verfügung.Weitere zehn Millionen Euro fliessen jährlich in den Ausbau der
Fachhochschul-Studienplätze, was auch eine Entlastung der Universitäten
bedeutet.
Neues Forschungsförderprogramm für Klein und Mittelbetriebe
Das Wirtschaftsministerium hat unter dem Motto " Forschungskompetenzen für
die Wirtschaft" ein neues Förderprogramm gestartet. Damit sollen vor allem
kleine und mittlere Unternehmen beim Aufbau ihres eigenen
Forschungspersonal und bei dessen Höherqualifizierung unterstützt werden .
Wien würdigt Alfred Adler
Die jüngst in Schottland entdeckte Urne von Alfred Adler, dem Vater der
Psychosomatik, fand am 12. Juli auf dem Wiener Zentralfriedhof ihre letzte
Ruhestätte.
Salzburg; Gemeinsame Ausbildung an Pädagogischer Hochschule und Uni.
Erste Schritte in Richtung gemeinsame Lehrerausbildung setzten die Universität
Salzburg und die Pädagogische Hochschule Salzburg . Sie wollen künftig die
Ausbildung der Lehrer zusammenführen und Kompetenzen bündeln.
Wirtschaftsuniversitä kämpft auf dem Rechtsweg um Finanzierung
Die wirtschaftsuniversität hat bei ihrem Versuch, auf dem Rechtsweg mehr Geld
vom Wissenschaftsministerium zu erkämpfen, die erste Hürde erfolgreich
genommen.
Österr. fördert Mannschaftssport -Grossevents mit 1,31 Mio. Euro
Nach der Fussball-EURO 2008 und der Handball-EM 2010 finden im Jahr 2011
gleich drei grosse Mannschaftssport-Grossereignisse in Österreich statt.
Die Amerikan Football-WM, die Faustball-ball-WM und die Volleyball-Euro.
Neuwahlen standen im Mittelpunkt bei Landeskonferenz des ÖSV in Velden

Sportminister Darabos und Werner Schlager besuchten eine Turnstunde
Schüler für Sport zu motivierren ist das Ziel einer Aktion, die Anfang des Jahres
von Sportminister Norbert Darabos ins Leben gerufen wurde. SportlerInnen des
Team Rot -Weiss- Rot, der Spitzensportförderung des Bundes, kommen dabei in
eine Turnstunde. Am 27. Juni besuchte der Tisctennissportler Werner Schlager
gemeinsam mit Sportminister Darabos eine Turndtunde der Hauptschule

" Paradies der Blicke": Neuer Themen-weg auf dem Schneeberg eröffnet
Der am 9. Juli eröffnete neue Themenweg auf dem Scneeberg in
Niederösterreich, ist mit der Slamander -Zahnradbahn ab Puchberg erreichbar
und hat bei der Begstation seinen Ausgangspunkt. Besucher können nicht nur
das einmalige Panorama geniessen, sie erfahren auch vom Bau der Zahnradbahn
ebenso wie von der untrennbaren Verbindung des Schneebergs mit dem Wasser,
der seit mitte des 19.Jahrhunderts wichtiger Lieferant des Wiener
Hochquellenwassers ist. Zentrales Element und "Landmark" ist das Kaleidoskop,
ein mehr als 40 Meter langer multimedial bespielbarer Austellungsraum. Derzeit
wird darin über vergangene und aktuelle Bedeutung des Schneebergs berichtet.

After having failed his exam in " Logistics and Organisation", Danny goes
and confronts his lecturer about it.
Danny: " Sir, do you really understand anything about the subject?"
Professor: " Surely I must, otherwise I would not be a professor!
Danny: " Great, well then I would like to ask you a question. If you can
give me the correct answer, I will accept my mark as is and go.
If you however do not know the answer, I want you to give me an "A" for
the exam.
Professor: Okay, it's a deal. So what was the question?"
Danny: What is legal, but not logical, logical but not legal, and neither
logical nor legal?
Even after some long and hard
consideration, the professor cannot give Danny an answer, and therefore
changes his exam mark to an "A", as agreed.
Still puzzled, the professor later calls on his best student in his class, Sihle,
and asks him the same question?
Sihle immediately answers, "Sir, you see, you are 63years old and
married to a 35 year old woman, which is legal, but not logical. Your wife
has a 25 year old lover, which is logical, but not legal. The fact that you
have given your wife's lover an "A", although he really should have failed,
is neither legal nor logical."
