Changing Lives
2014 Annual Report to the Community
2014 will be remembered as one of the most pivotal years in the
history of CP Rochester. The collaboration between CP Rochester
and Happiness House/Finger Lakes United Cerebral Palsy, Inc.,
which began in mid-2013, continued in earnest. While the official
date of the affiliation of the two organizations was January 28,
2015, much of the transition process took place in 2014. Indeed, on
December 31, 2014, the State of New York officially recognized the
incorporation of Ability Partners Inc., the parent corporation for
the two organizations.
During 2014, Mary Walsh Boatfield, the CEO and President of CP
Rochester and Happiness House, worked closely with the Board,
her staff, our volunteers, and those we serve to make the process
of affiliation occur smoothly, while at the same time continuing to
develop and expand the services CP Rochester provides. Change
never comes easily. But through it all, our agency experienced steady growth in the use of its
clinics, respite services, residential and children’s services, recreational services, habilitation
programs, and autism services. What we do is well-received by the community and supported by
such organizations as the Al Sigl Community of Agencies, the Elks, and numerous foundations
and private donors. In short, we are succeeding in Opening Doors and Enriching Lives.
This Annual Report highlights three individuals and how CP Rochester fulfills its mission to serve.
Of course, these individuals’ successes, and the successes of so many others, can be linked to the
skill and caring provided by our dedicated staff and volunteers. Without their efforts, the goals
and values of CP Rochester would only be a dream.
With success comes challenges. At nearly every turn, there are efforts by “those who regulate us”
to further complicate an already complicated process. That does not mean that the continual
expansion of regulations and the reduction in monetary support are not well intended. But, no
matter what the intentions are, the process of being in compliance and, at the same time,
providing high quality service, requires continual planning and service delivery changes. That is
the primary reason for our collaboration with Happiness House.
The successes of 2014 have demonstrated the value of the decision to affiliate with Happiness
House and the value of continuing to search for creative means of providing service delivery.
Everyone at CP Rochester should be proud of what has been accomplished this year. As our
vision states: We envision a community where people of all abilities lead rewarding lives.
Meaningful partnerships are nurtured to ensure all doors are open and opportunities are
available for everyone. Thanks to our staff, our volunteers, the individuals and families we
serve, and so many other supporters, we are fulfilling our vision and mission and are headed in
the right direction.
2015 promises to be a very interesting year. The Board looks
forward to working with all of you to do what we do best.

When five-year old Josías Colón started preschool
at CP Rochester’s Augustin Children’s Center in
2013, he struggled with his speech, hand coordination, and sensory integration. He didn’t draw or
color. He didn’t interact with the other students.
He lacked the ability to use the bathroom himself.
During the two years Josías spent at CP Rochester,
he worked with Occupational Therapist Nicole
Dillon. Through sensory-based and fine motor/
visual perceptual activities, Nicole was able to
help Josías integrate in his preschool classroom
and increase his independence. Josías now loves
to draw, color, and write. His speech has vastly
improved and he is capable of expressing his needs
and wants. At his preschool graduation ceremony
in June, Josías’ mother said he is “ready to enter
general education kindergarten with all the skills
he needs to succeed thanks to Nicole, the teachers
and aides, and CP Rochester.”

Ruth Sandel is a participant in the Adult
Basic Education program offered through
CP Rochester’s Day Habilitation Program.
Teacher Paul Arnold meets with Ruth and
other participants three times per week
to offer opportunities for learning and
strengthening skills in vocabulary, spelling,
reading, math, and science. According to
Paul, “Ruth is enthusiastic, dependable, and
hard working!” He noted that Ruth and the
other students have a heightened sense of
accomplishment and self-esteem. Students
can apply what they learn to all areas of life.
Units such as counting coins, telling time,
and reading directly affect the students’
ability to be independent. Ruth is excited
to attend each class. She especially enjoys
math and working with Paul.

Volunteer Support
Ways to Give
Helping others and working together to strengthen our
society is an important American tradition. In 2014, over 36%
of all Rochester area residents took part in helping others,
working together to support and strengthen our community.
Volunteering goes beyond helping other people. Studies
have shown that the volunteers themselves benefit, whether
through increased job prospects or even better overall health!
Volunteering may be connected to greater longevity and
increased emotional and physical health.
Many CP Rochester donors choose to
give from their immediate assets such as
cash and check (or via credit card). In
addition to this type of giving, there are
a number of creative ways to provide
long-term financial support, such as with
a ‘legacy’ gift. The goal of CP Rochester’s
Legacy Society is to plan for our organization’s future and set the course for a
strategic vision which will carry the agency
forward. Legacy gifts include bequests,
charitable gift annuities, charitable
remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts,
life insurance, real estate, and others.
This year, CP Rochester was fortunate to have the support of
242 volunteers of all ages and backgrounds who gave
nearly 15,000 hours to help strengthen our services in a
variety of ways, including serving on boards and committees,
swimming with the preschool children, helping out in an Adult
Basic Education class, landscaping at our residences, or
building adaptive equipment. Thank you to all of them!
Every member of the CP Rochester family
has the power to make future change
possible. Together, we continue to ensure
the long-term sustainability of programs
and services for the 2,000+ individuals we
serve each year.
All donations are applied to the Foundation
to benefit the programs and services of CP
Rochester and Happiness House.
Legacy Gifts
Stocks – Gifts of stock enable donors to
avoid capital gains on the appreciation in
market value of the shares.
Bequests – Simple bequests may be made
through a donor’s will and can specify any
dollar amount, percentage, or portion of
the estate to the Foundation.
Charitable Gift Annuity – A charitable gift
annuity is when a donor transfers property
(cash, securities, real estate) to the Foundation in exchange for a fixed dollar payment
during the donor’s lifetime.
Charitable Gift from an IRA – Individuals
over 70½ may designate direct contributions
from an IRA to the Foundation.
Charitable Remainder Trust – A charitable
remainder trust pays income to the donor
or beneficiary for a period of time, after
which the property in the trust passes to the
Foundation.
Charitable Lead Trusts – A charitable lead
(income) trust is established when a donor
transfers property to a trust, which generally
pays income interest to the Foundation.
Life Insurance – A gift of life insurance
allows a donor to pass on part of his or her
estate with minimum cost, maximum
benefit, and often an estate tax advantage.
Real Estate – Gifts of real estate include a
principal residence, vacation home, farm,
commercial property, or land.

When the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities approved a request
from the Kuzmanovski family to redesign
a bathroom that would accommodate their
son Darko’s needs for accessibility, the
family approached CP Rochester’s Accessible Home Renovations for help. Tim Hillen,
Manager, and Carlyn Robboy, Occupational
Therapist in CP Rochester’s Clinical and
Therapeutic Services Department, worked
in tandem with an architect to create a
design that would increase Darko’s qualityof-life by providing a space that would
allow him to safely and comfortably
complete his activities of daily living. Today,
Darko enjoys more freedom than he ever
thought possible.

CP Rochester Highlights 2014
• CP Rochester and Happiness House formed a ‘passive parent’ corporation. Ability Partners, Inc. is the
culmination of months of strategic planning by members of both agencies’ Boards of Directors.
• $276,939 in fundraising dollars was raised.
• The first annual Evening of Stars Gala raised $58,000.
• The 9th Annual 5K Run for Fun raised $38,000 in support of the agencies programs and services.
• Joyce Weir exited her role as Chairperson of CP Rochester’s Board of Directors and welcomed Jeffrey
Baker as new Chairperson.
• Residential Services served 43 individuals between the ages of 19 and 81 in five residences.
• Free-Standing Respite billed 142,530 units with an average of 11,800 units/month including hourly and
overnight stays.
• 72 children with and without disabilities graduated from CP Rochester’s Augustin Children’s Center
preschool program.
• The Article 16 Clinic conducted 15,080 Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, and
Counseling visits.
• The Article 28 Clinic conducted 3,678 Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy,
Counseling, and Psychiatry visits.
• The Family Dental Center treated 1,252 patients (11% new in 2014) for a total of 2,532 visits.
• Accessible Home Renovations served 110 families.
• Community Services (In-Home Respite, Wrap-Around Respite, and Community Recreation) served 165
individuals (8,000 hours). Community Habilitation served 45 individuals (7,800 hours).
• Day Habilitation served 60 individuals (13,500 units). Service Coordination served 220 individuals/
families (2,200 units).
• CP Rochester honored employees Linda Brown, Laurie Gendron, Genevieve Palermo, and Wilma
Walker at the annual CPNYS conference in October.
• Over the course of three days, volunteers helping with parking at the Lilac Festival helped raise
$17,000 for CP Rochester.
• The Family Dental Center was awarded the 2014 Health Care Achievement Award from the Rochester
Business Journal as well as the Friend of ARC Award from Genesee ARC.
• CP Rochester received a $4,000 Community Health Award from Excellus to help promote a culture of
wellness within the agency.
• CP Rochester created and activated a new, five-year strategic plan focusing on People/Culture,
System Processes, Organizational Quality, Individuals/Community, and Value.
• CP Rochester’s Winton Campus began a multi-year renovation project to improve security, increase
educational and treatment spaces, and enhance programs and services.
• New Mission, Vision, and Guiding Principles were adopted by the agency (see back page).
