ALAN BOGANA SELECTED WORKS 2012-16 I’m a Swiss artist based in Geneva, Switzerland. I work mainly with sculpture, digital art and holography, and my pieces are usually presented in the form of installations. For the past few years, I have focused on the interaction of light with matter. I explore this field of study in a metaphorical and phenomenological way through various means such as computer simulations, manipulation of translucent materials and fragments of holograms. My practice revolves around the mediating role that technology and scientific knowledge play in our perception and understanding of reality. I consider these two worlds to be powerful tools for colonizing and expanding our imagination. My works are rooted in a culture of "popular science", but are nonetheless developed through experimental and generative processes. I would define my pieces as hybrids, falling halfway between the realistic and the improbable, the organic and the artificial, the random and the structured, and between speculative and applied research. The works produced in the framework of the long-term project “Cave Caustics” explore phenomena we are unlikely to observe in the real world and are produced via computer-generated simulations commonly used in the entertainment industry. A recurring strategy in my work is to present the viewer with a “reduced” form of reality. This is done, for example, by rendering the objects invisible apart from their traces of condensed light or through the use of darkness, in which artworks can be seen only partially and at defined moments. This filtered version of reality allows us to deepen our perception of what surrounds us and to question the way in which we view the physical world. My most recent works explore the morphology and taxonomy of minerals by means of holography and 3d morphing technics. SINEDDOCA — 2016 transmission holograms, aluminium, steel, plexiglass, wood, glass fiber, carbon fiber, optical components, motors, lasers This installation is composed of four structures that evoke different scales (such as skyscrapers, an anthropomorphic figure, a molecule). These structures have been designed according to the proportions of the golden ratio and are built with a modular system, which integrates fractured pipes made of different materials. On each structure are mounted Lichtenberg figures or fragments of holograms, whose original motif appears in full on each fragment. The holograms depict minerals, atoms and planets. The installation is a sort of "invisible city" by Italo Calvino dedicated to the notion of the fragment and, on a more ambiguous level, to the question of ruins. The hologram is installed at the doorway between two exhibition rooms, as a Sphinx that crosses the visitors’ path. Different lasers make the motif visible according to predefined cycles and create a narrative, which deploys itself across different exhibition rooms. Mineral by courtesy of Basri Brahimi. The video was created using 3d models of minerals that I scanned at the Mineralogy Museum MINES ParisTech in Paris. The work depicts the intermediate stages of the metamorphosis of one mineral into another. A moving LED light source creates a sort of sun, interacts with two other artworks and creates a narrative that deploys itself across three exhibition rooms. Details of the work Kunsthaus — Langenthal THIOTIMOLINE — 2015 Digital hologram, 60 x 85 cm Illuminated by a LED moving head Edition of 2 This digital hologram visualizes the Thiotimoline molecule, an imaginary chemical compound invented by the science-fiction writer Isaac Asimov. He published several spoof scientific papers about this compound, which due to a carbon atom that projects a bond into the future and one into the past, reveals « endochronic » properties. With the help of the chemist Pascal Tripet, I realized a « rigorous » tridimensional visualization of this molecule and freely illustrated the carbon atom that travels through time. A moving light source makes the motif progressively visible and interacts with two other artworks. The revolving motif of a quartz crystal appears and disappears through the fragments according to the spectator’s point of view. Mineral by courtesy of Max Zubler. Overall views of the work Kunsthaus — Langenthal THE THEIA HOLO DRAMA — 2015 Fragments of plate transmission holograms, laser, motor, aluminum, wood, variable dimensions Several fragments from different plate holograms revolve around on a carrousel, a laser passes through them and diffracts a series of motifs in the exhibition room. This sort of holographic planetarium is freely inspired by the pseudoscientific theory of Theia, which supposedly was the planet that collided with the Earth. This event may have given birth to the Moon and is presented here in the form of a fragmented non-linear narrative. The hologram shows a ball and a stick, evoking the « ball and stick » representation system of molecules in chemistry, meaning an atom and its bond. The original motif appears in full on each fragment. The holograms are shown by means of a sculptural display and a moving laser light, which makes each fragment visible according to predefined cycles. The results of this simulation have been printed over a physical reproduction of the same structure. The work is part of the project « Cave Caustic », as well as the first of a series of works that explore minerals and their « cultural aura ». Overall view of the work CAC — Geneva EAT YOUR BROCCOLI BEFORE IT EATS YOU, FOR AGES 5 TO 8 — 2015 Three inkjet prints on photo paper; two prints 55 x 225 cm big, one 55 x 352 cm This is a site specific installation made in collaboration with Marta RinikerRadich. Three computer generated trompe-l’oeil images have been glued to the structural columns of the building. These images simulate the reflective behaviour of these same columns, on which the surrounding exhibition space is mirrored and a fictional children’s workshop is depicted. Text accompanying the installation: « With a hop and a skip Billy stumbled into the room. The other children were not yet there, but the tangerines had already been laid out on the table, one per child. Billy looked them over carefully, examining for bumps and bruises, discolorations, any indication of dryness or sourness. Feeling satisfied with his choice, he sat himself down in front of the fattest, most orange, most inviting tangerine. » Overall views Fri-Art – Fribourg Photos: Aurélien Mole EAT YOUR BROCCOLI BEFORE IT EATS YOU, FOR AGES 5 TO 8 Overall views of the columns Fri-Art — Fribourg Photos: Aurélien Mole NATURE COVER ISSUE 6433 RGB LAMP — 2014 Duratrans print, RGB LED lightbulb, light filter 63 x 29 x 29 cm This lamp was created using a reproduction of Nature magazine's cover issue 6433 and uses an RGB Led lightbulb as a light source. Issue number 6433 focused on the principle of interference between waves and its applications, a theme I have been exploring lately. My idea for this piece was to engage with this phenomenon exclusively through its documentation. Overall views of the work CAC— Geneva, Switzerland STIMMFARBEN — 2014 Fourteen fragments of acrylic glass stemming from four blocks, 10 x 10 x 1,9 cm each This installation is composed of fourteen fragments stemming from four 10 x 10 x 1,9 cm blocks of acrylic glass, displayed on a lightbox. The four initial blocks underwent two treatments: first, an electrical discharge on four variations by means of a linear accelerator, then a shot with an assault rifle. My interest for this series of works developed over the last five years, focus on how these two techniques interact one with the other. Detail and overall view of the installation Centre d'Art Contemporain — Geneva MY OWN PRIVATE INTERFEROMETER — 2014 Installation Mixed media Variable dimensions This work crystallizes intuitions, assumptions and misinterpretations of early-stage research in the form of a sculptural installation. The research topic are the principles and applications of the interference of waves, which span different media, disciplines, scales and dimensions, encompassing holography, remote sensing, fluid visualization, spectrometry etc. Choosing not to reproduce a physical interferometer, I tried to explore the phenomena by means of paper folding techniques. My aim was to create a poetic tool for the imagination by freely blending sources, functions and phenomena. Light phenomena of refraction are observed in relationship with the mechanical folding of textiles. This transparent drapery metamorphoses into water, plastic, diamond and others non-existent clear materials in a continuous flow and is projected into the exhibition space as a ghostly light effect. This « case study » is part of the project « Cave Caustics ». Details of the pointing laser Espace Kugler — Geneva CAUSTICUM — 2012 Installation; CG Animation 720p, 3m 37s Loop, Video Beamer, Dichroic filter, Phosphorescent screen 480 x 269 cm The exhibition space was virtually recreated in CGI. Within the virtual model the floor was substituted with water and a light source was installed beneath it. A simulation of caustics (a phenomenon of natural focusing of light) is generated on the screen's area where the video, resulting from this simulation, is projected during the show. The video is projected through a filter, which only allows the part of the light spectrum that excites phosphorence through, on a phosphorescent screen. The video projection blends itself with the ephemeral light emanation of the screen, the areas with the highest concentration of simulated light also emating the most.
