Trotz Wassernot Auf Jeden Fall - Wir Trinken
www.AnaheimKG.com Trotz Wassernot Auf Jeden Fall Wir Trinken Bier Zum Karneval Prinz Holger I. Prinzessin Kerstin II. AnaheimKG.com facebook.com/AnaheimKarnevalgesellschaft Greetings from the Elferratspräsident T his year’s Karneval theme, “Trotz Wassernot auf Jeden Fall, Wir Trinken Bier Zum Karneval” is both fun and relevant, as is so much of Karneval. Think about the timing of Karneval. For those whose livelihood depends on the land, this is the ‘between’ season. Harvest is over, but it’s too early for new planting, a time for oneself. It’s not a bad lesson, ‘Work hard when you have to, but play hard when you can’. So what does this season’s theme tell us? Perhaps it has to do with being aware of circumstances around us, dealing with issues within our control, and not worrying about things beyond our influence. 2015/20 Proklamation 16 O f course I could be reading far too much into Karneval. Perhaps it’s just about getting together with old friends, and friends you have yet to meet. Perhaps it’s just about gathering with like minded people who want to be social and enjoy themselves. Perhaps it’s about taking an opportunity to immerse in a bit of heritage and old world culture. Whatever it is to you, don’t let Karneval season slip by without you. This year our season is very short, you don’t want to find the season is over, and you missed it. T he Prinz and Prinzessin will be there along with the Prinzengarde, and the Smileys. Sometimes when they all get together a little magic happens. You don’t want to miss that either. Helau und Alaaf, Paul Smith, Elferratspräsident Seitenwechsel! or the last five years you have seen my face on this page of the Narrenblatt. This year it was time to move over, FKarnevalsgesellschaft from the left to the right (page). It has been a great honor and fun to be the Elferrats President of the Anaheim during those years. I am very happy that over those five years Karneval in the Phoenix Club has grown significantly. We tried new things and learned. We have created events that filled our ball room to the limits. We have more and more young people coming, and also joining the Karneval Group. Yes, German Karneval is alive in Southern California! want to thank the AKG for the support, activities and hard Iaudience work to make that happen. And, I want to thank you, the for coming back and making our events the par- ties that you expect. lease support our new Elferrats President, Paul Smith, P and the Anaheim Karnevalsgesellschaft in the future and we’ll make sure you won’t regret it. Helau und Alaaf, Holger Message from the Group Leader The Anaheim KG is a German Mardi Gras tradition society, traditions want to be upheld, and we have been keeping the customs of our beloved Rheinischer Karneval for over 50 years! Our 2016 season promises to be more exciting than ever. The season is a short one this year, only 40 days and counting from January 1 until Ash Wednesday. We have a lot to fill your calendar, beginning with Piratenball! We expect a sell out crowd, so dig out your pirate hats and sashes for more fun than you’ll ever find across the seven seas! For the little Karnevalisten there is Kinderkarneval; all the tradition of Karneval but put on by and for the kids. And for those that like it loud and naughty, we have Karneval auf der Reeperbahn, with a special guest Master of Ceremonies. Manuela Horn. If her yodeling doesn’t inspire good times her leather whip will! We round out the season with a traditional Prunksitzung as the pre-game show for Super Bowl 50. Come enjoy some light stand up comedy and then root for your team in the big game. Our closing event is tradtionally Lumpenball (the rag ball) giving everyone a last chance to bid farewell to our Prinz. All our Saturday events feature performances by the AKG Prinzengarde, Smileys, and the Elferrat, along with costume contests, drink specials and great German food. We of the “Anaheim KG” groom tradition; the tradition of Mardi Gras fun. We hope to see you here! Mark Davis Anaheim KG Gruppenleiter Karneval, Fastnacht, Mardi Gras! The Phoenix Club Karnevalsgesellschaft is a co-founder of the “Vereinigung Deutsch-Amerikanischer Karnevalsgesellschaften”, better known as GAMGA. The goal is to keep old traditions alive. Constantly changing environments did not make it easy for us, many times one partner has a lot more fun than the other, or the kids find it boring. This year seems to be a big difference. We have a terrific Princess and a tall Prince who have worked for the AKG Youth Dance Group and actively in Karneval for many years. Their three sons were Prince Renee, Prince Robert, and Prince Martin at the Phoenix Club Kinderkarneval. They all promised to come with many friends to celebrate with their royal parents in Las Vegas. I.L. Prinzessin Kerstin II: Here I am with my prince, the handsome and tall, In fact he is the tallest of all. We’ll bring you Karneval with all the fun As pirates, or seamen or even as nun. Dress up, have a dance, perhaps a drink Some kissing as well and Schunkeln in sync. Bring friends with you and have a good time And while you have fun, don’t count the dime You can take my prince for a beer or gin, But be aware – home- I’ll take him. And watch the shows, cheer the girls of the guard, And the Smileys and guys, they practiced so hard. Let’s mingle together at the bar or the floor, Be aware – before midnight there is no door. Now let’s start the season, let’s start it just now And let’s yell together: Phoenix Helau!!! Seine Tollität Prinz Holger I. & Ihre Lieblichkeit Prinzessin Kerstin II. Well, to begin with German Karneval is not American Mardi Gras. The festivities you may have seen in New Orleans drew their beginnings from Karneval in Germany, but that’s about it for what they truly share. So, what is German Karneval? Karneval in Germany began in the 16th century to allow commoners to mock the monarchy and politicians without fear of retribution, but it really took off in the 19th and 20th centuries. Therefore many “official” Karneval costumes copy some of those old official uniforms and dresses. Karneval is nicknamed “The 5th Season” in Germany and starts on 11.11 at 11:11am and lasts until Ash Wednesday (which is in February or March of the following year). In Germany, the core time of the Karneval season are the two (2) weeks before Ash Wednesday. Some areas of Germany will basically shut down during the last week before Ash Wednesday – where people will party for 4-5 days in a row at street parties, bars, events, and in their homes. On Rosenmontag (the Monday before Ash Wednesday) in the City of Köln (Cologne), over 1.5 million people will turn out to celebrate and to watch the 3 mile long Karneval parade. That same day, one could travel away from Köln and find other cities where 200,000 – 500,000 people have turned out for festivities in a particular city. The fact is Karneval is THE BIG EVENT during winter time in Germany. While there is no “true” recipe for Karneval, most cities have certain traditions that have come forward from the 16th century. However, many traditions can and do vary from city to city, town to town. They do though, share a few common attributes: Elferrat - the “committee of 11” are basically the organizers of the events. The Elferrat wears distinctive uniforms and - especially important - ”funny” hats. Royalties - most areas have “royals” that reign over the city during the Karneval season. The most common is a Prince often accompanied by a princess. Karneval in Cologne is under the reign of a Dreigestirn, consisting of the Prince, the Bauer and the Jungfrau. The royals are surrounded by MANY “supporters” that have various functions (usually in a funny way)., e.g. there is a Prinzengarde (guard of the prince) - which may consist of (pretty) women - whose only task is to dance. Show dance performances during the events - Some performances can be really artistic while others are just slapstick (i.e. men dressed as women). The performers are all amateurs, only performing during the season (but practicing all year long!) Orden (medals) - every Karneval Club creates its own medal for each season. People dress up for Karneval events. The best comparison would be American Halloween. The big difference is that for Karneval people definitely dress up “funny”. Fun - the fun is mostly created by the audience by dressing up, dancing - and usually by a bit of drinking. However there are also more formal events where stand up (amateur) comedians provide quite a show, making timely fun of local or state events or themselves. Common rules are often abandoned, e.g. kissing strangers and provocative clothing (for women) is quite normal. Learn to celebrate German Karneval in America People need fun and relaxation. You had four weeks to clean up the Christmas tree, three weeks to recycle the bottles of the New Year’s eve party - now what? Go to German Karneval! What can you expect? German Karneval in America follows more or less the rules and tradition of the “original” Karneval. There will be a program and there will usually be dancing. It will be a mixture of German Oktoberfest songs and other “normal” ballroom dance music. If you expect a rave party, this is the wrong place. The events will usually have a theme and you are strongly encouraged to dress to the theme - no limits set. You want to show off - and you can. This way you can also go after one of the prizes in the costume contest! The program will have a series of formal steps, like marching in of the Elferrat and the royalties, greetings of guests and giving medals to honorees. But this is mixed with jokes and dance performances that often even involve the audience. Don’t expect Circue de Soleil, but dances with a good beat, some slapstick, and unusual dresses will certainly entertain you. The important part is you, the friends you bring, and perhaps a designated driver! Everything will be over by the next morning, and often you won’t leave until then. The evening, costumes, dancing and drinks, are meant to celebrate and enjoy the craziness and freedom of that night. You are certainly encouraged to dance - even if you can’t (you won’t be alone!) – Enjoy, this is Karneval!!! elau - laaf... Prinzengarde e are the Prinzengarde, the Royal Guard to the Prince and Princess, W from the Anaheim Karnevalsgellschaft at the Phoenix Club in the Anaheim, CA.
